Key takeaways

  • Lanayru is a region, not a single settlement Zora’s Domain, Lanayru Wetlands and Mount Lanayru should be treated as distinct subareas.
  • The main route runs east from Lookout Landing through Lanayru Wetlands to Zora’s Domain. Wetland Stable is the main early waypoint.
  • The Zora storyline is the region’s principal progression arc It leads to Sidon, the Ancient Zora Waterworks, Wellspring Island and the Water Temple.
  • The Upland Zorana Skyview Tower is the most useful Surface launch point for the Great Spring. Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower serves the colder southeastern slopes and its sky archipelago.
  • Water and vertical movement define Lanayru Expect waterfalls, slippery cliffs, deep channels, floating water bubbles, sky islands and underground waterways.
  • The region contains a large amount of optional completion content Shrines, caves, wells, Korok puzzles, Hudson signs, Bubbulfrogs, sky-island challenges and Depths exploration extend well beyond the main quest.

About this guide

Scope: Tears of the Kingdom base game, including the Surface, the directly associated Lanayru sky areas and the Lanayru sections of the Depths. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Zora main quest, the Water Temple, regional bosses and late-game exploration.

Overview

Lanayru is the broad eastern water region of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is not simply another name for Zora’s Domain. In the game’s regional breakdown, Lanayru is best understood as a connected group of districts and vertical map layers:

The region’s central story is the Zora crisis. Sludge falls from the sky, contaminates the waterways and leaves Zora’s Domain in a state of emergency. Link’s investigation eventually leads from the Surface to the Ancient Zora Waterworks, then to Wellspring Island and the Water Temple above the region. The Water Temple is therefore part of Lanayru’s wider vertical geography rather than an isolated dungeon.

Boundaries and hierarchy

The word Lanayru is used at several levels, which can cause confusion when comparing maps and guides.

Lanayru Wetlands

Lanayru Wetlands occupies the western side of the region. It is a broad marshland between Hyrule Field, Kakariko’s general area and the road towards Zora’s Domain. Wetland Stable sits near its western side and acts as the practical gateway into the region. The paved route southeast of the stable crosses the Millennio Sandbar and a series of fragile bridges before continuing towards the Zora lands.

Lanayru Great Spring

Lanayru Great Spring is the mountainous, river-fed heart of the region. It includes Zora’s Domain, Upland Zorana, Ploymus Mountain, Mipha Court, East Reservoir Lake and a substantial network of channels and caves. Guides commonly group the Zora settlement and its surrounding highlands under this regional heading.

Mount Lanayru

Mount Lanayru is a separate southeastern subarea. It is colder, more mountainous and more closely associated with the Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower, Walnot Mountain and the Zakusu and Jikais Shrines. It is near the Lanayru Great Spring but should not be merged with Upland Zorana or Zora’s Domain.

Lanayru Sky

The sky layer includes the Lanayru Great Spring Sky and South Lanayru Sky areas. Wellspring Island, the Water Temple, Valor Island and several smaller sky islands are connected to the Lanayru story and regional map. Some guides use “Lanayru Sky” as a broad label, while individual map pages distinguish the Great Spring sky from the South Lanayru sky archipelago.

Lanayru Depths

The Depths beneath and around Lanayru include the Lanayru Great Spring Depths, the Abandoned Lanayru Mine and several mine, grove, canyon and Lightroot locations. The underground map does not always follow the Surface’s practical travel boundaries, so a Surface shrine may correspond to a Lightroot in a neighbouring Depths subregion. The Lanayru locations directory includes places such as Abandoned Lanayru Mine, Ploymus Canyon Mine, Ruto Canyon Mine and Tabahl Grove.

---

Lanayru is organised around water moving from high mountain sources through Zora territory and out into the marshes. The Wetlands are low, open and muddy, while the Great Spring becomes increasingly vertical. Waterfalls cut through Upland Zorana, and the approach to Zora’s Domain involves climbing wet cliffs, crossing bridges and following channels rather than simply taking a level road.

The region’s weather is a practical concern. Rain is common around the Wetlands and Great Spring, making ordinary climbing unreliable. Players should use overhangs, caves, waterfalls, Zonai devices and nearby routes that avoid exposed cliff faces. The Zora armour set is especially valuable because its Waterfall Swim ability allows Link to travel vertically through the region’s waterfalls, although parts of the set require progress through the Zora storyline.

The story adds a second environmental problem: sludge. Sludge blocks waterways, coats surfaces and prevents normal travel in parts of the Zora region. Water-based methods, splash fruit and devices fitted with hydrants are useful for clearing it. The regional crisis is not merely decorative, since the contamination affects routes, puzzles and the main quest.

Major natural features

Some of these names function as map regions, while others are lakes, channels, mountains or landmarks within a wider district. They should not be treated as equivalent administrative areas.

Major natural features

Zora’s Domain

Zora’s Domain is the principal settlement of Lanayru and the centre of the regional story. It is built around a large water-filled structure in the Great Spring and contains the throne room, shops, inns, armour services and several quest-giving characters.

The settlement becomes the player’s main base during Sidon of the Zora. From here, Link investigates the sludge, speaks with Sidon and King Dorephan, searches for clues connected with the ancient Zora, and eventually gains access to the route leading to Wellspring Island.

Named Zora’s Domain and Great Spring locations

The cave directory above is consolidated from regional cave lists. One guide records eighteen named caves in the Lanayru Great Spring grouping, including the Ancient Zora Waterworks, Ralis Channel, the Upland Zorana caves and the Ulria Grotto caves.

Wetland Stable

Wetland Stable is the main Hylian facility in Lanayru Wetlands. It provides the normal stable services, including horse registration and boarding, and serves as a convenient travel base before heading east towards Zora’s Domain.

The stable also supports local activities. Lawdon can begin A Picture for Wetland Stable, in which Link helps supply a picture of the Ring Ruins for the stable’s display. The stable is also useful for checking the nearby wells and for preparing horses before travelling across the Wetlands.

Named Lanayru Wetlands locations

The Wetlands region has several wells and ruins that are easy to overlook because they are spread across shallow water and small islands. The “Where Are the Wells?” activity is particularly useful if you are aiming for completion, since the wells are distributed across the region rather than concentrated around the stable.

Mount Lanayru facilities and landmarks

Mount Lanayru is less settled than the Wetlands or Great Spring. Its most important facility is the Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower, which opens the southeastern Surface and sky map. The terrain around Walnot Mountain is colder and more exposed, so cold-resistance food or equipment is advisable.

Named Mount Lanayru locations

The Mount Lanayru grouping contains the Jikais Shrine and Zakusu Shrine on the Surface. Nintendo Life’s shrine directory places both in Mount Lanayru, while nearby shrines such as Apogek and Yomizuk belong to Lanayru Great Spring.

From Lookout Landing to Zora’s Domain

This is the natural first route for the regional phenomenon.

The route is possible without first completing the tower, but the tower makes the region much easier to read. Wetland Stable is a useful preparation point, while Upland Zorana Skyview Tower provides a strong launch position for reaching Zora’s Domain and its surrounding waterfalls.

From Lookout Landing to Zora’s Domain: steps

  1. 01
Leave Lookout Landing and travel east towards the Wetlands.
  2. 02
Activate the Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower if it is convenient, since its map coverage helps with the western approach.
  3. 03
Visit Wetland Stable and activate the Tukarok Shrine nearby.
  4. 04
Follow the road across the marshes and Millennio Sandbar.
  5. 05
Cross or bypass the damaged bridges using Recall, Ultrahand-built platforms, boats or Zonai devices.
  6. 06
Continue through the Zora approaches towards Upland Zorana.
  7. 07
Activate the Upland Zorana Skyview Tower.
  8. 08
Enter Zora’s Domain and begin the Sidon investigation.

Reaching the Water Temple

The Water Temple is not reached by simply climbing the highest waterfall. Link must advance the Zora storyline.

Wellspring Island is a vertically layered sky structure above the Great Spring, and the Water Temple is located on that sky route. The quest therefore links three map layers: the Surface settlement, underground waterworks and the sky dungeon.

Reaching the Water Temple: steps

  1. 01
Investigate the sludge affecting Zora’s Domain.
  2. 02
    Meet Sidon at Mipha Court.
  3. 03
Search for King Dorephan and obtain the required Zora scale.
  4. 04
Follow the clues concerning the sky and the ancient Zora.
  5. 05
    Enter the Ancient Zora Waterworks.
  6. 06
Restore the water flow and use the resulting route to reach Wellspring Island.
  7. 07
Travel through the vertical sky-island sequence.
  8. 08
Reach the Water Temple and activate its four water devices.
  9. 09
    Defeat Mucktorok.

Reaching Mount Lanayru

Mount Lanayru is easiest to approach from the east or south after activating its Skyview Tower. Prepare cold resistance before climbing into the higher areas. The sky islands above the mountain can be reached using the tower’s launch, gliding, falling platforms and nearby floating structures.

Zora residents

The central residents of Lanayru are the Zora of Zora’s Domain. Their society is organised around the royal family and the domain’s water infrastructure.

Principal story-associated characters

Sidon is the main regional companion and Sage associated with the Water Temple. King Dorephan provides crucial information about the Zora’s history and the scale required for the sky investigation. Jiahto’s research helps direct the investigation towards the ancient writings and the “Clues to the Sky” stage.

Principal story-associated characters

Hylian residents and visitors

Lanayru Wetlands contains travelling merchants, stable workers, researchers, monster-control personnel and travelling adventurers. Many are encountered only as part of side quests or stable activities, so they should be distinguished from permanent residents of Zora’s Domain.

Named Hylian-associated figures and activity contacts

The exact appearance of travelling NPCs can depend on quest progression and whether a relevant regional activity has been started. Their presence should not be treated as evidence that they permanently live in Lanayru.

Factions and organised groups

The Zora royal household is the only faction with a major permanent base in the region. The other groups are itinerant, quest-related or encountered through the wider world rather than controlling Lanayru.

---

Lanayru contains numerous Surface shrines across its subareas, as well as sky shrines linked to the Great Spring and South Lanayru sky regions.

Lanayru Wetlands shrines

Lanayru Great Spring shrines

Mount Lanayru shrines

Lanayru sky shrines

These placements follow regional shrine directories, although exact map-region labels can differ near borders. For example, shrine guides place Jonsau in the Wetlands, Ihen-a near Mipha Court in the Great Spring, and Jikais and Zakusu in Mount Lanayru.

For completion, do not count a shrine as finished merely because its green swirl appears on the map. The shrine quest, crystal or approach challenge may still be incomplete.

---

Lanayru is one of the better regions for cave exploration because its water systems continue underground. Many caves contain Bubbulfrogs, ore deposits, treasure chests, Like Likes, shrine entrances or routes behind waterfalls.

Cave directory

Lanayru Great Spring

The Ancient Zora Waterworks is a story dungeon-like environment rather than an ordinary resource cave. It becomes accessible as part of the Zora main quest and is essential to the route towards Wellspring Island. The other named caves are generally optional, though some conceal shrines or valuable equipment.

Well directory

Wells are useful for collecting materials and locating enemies or treasure, but their importance varies. Some are short shafts, while others connect to larger underground chambers. When completing Lanayru, check the map around stable buildings, ruins and isolated islands rather than searching only along the main road.

---

Common enemies

Enemy camps are often placed beside bridges, roads, ruins and resource locations. Water makes combat awkward, so fighting from solid ground or using ice and shock effects can be safer than attempting to swim around a camp.

Sludge

Sludge is the region’s major story hazard. It blocks routes and contaminates water around Zora’s Domain. Clear it with water-producing methods such as Splash Fruit, Chuchu Jelly with the appropriate elemental effect, hydrants or Sidon’s water ability after it becomes available.

Rain and slippery rock

Rain affects climbing across much of the Great Spring. Carry stamina-restoring meals, use climbing equipment where available, and look for dry routes through caves. Waterfall access eventually makes the region easier to traverse, but it does not remove the need to plan around weather.

Cold

Mount Lanayru and its higher sky islands require cold resistance. The exact equipment requirement depends on altitude and conditions, so keep at least one cold-resistance meal available even if Link is wearing cold-resistant armour.

Mucktorok

Mucktorok is the Water Temple boss. Its mud form moves rapidly and can cover the arena with sludge. The fight is designed around clearing the mud and exposing the boss before attacking. Sidon’s water ability is central to the encounter. After the boss is defeated, the Zora crisis is resolved and Sidon’s Sage ability becomes available for the remainder of the game.

Main quest

Sidon of the Zora

This is the regional phenomenon quest connected with Lanayru. It covers:

Progression is not permanently missable, but the order in which characters and clues appear can change depending on how directly the player explores. In particular, players can sometimes discover King Dorephan or parts of the route before the game formally directs them there.

Side quests and regional activities

The Giant of Ralis Pond is associated with the waterways running from Zora’s Domain towards the Wetlands. It encourages following the stream and examining the relationship between the Zora waterways and the lower marshes.

Depths checklist

---

Lanayru is a recurring name in The Legend of Zelda. It is especially prominent in Skyward Sword, where Lanayru is one of the three major Surface regions and is associated with the dragon Lanayru. In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the name instead identifies a large eastern province containing wetlands, mountains and the Zora homeland. The exact geography and political history are not identical between games, so references should not automatically be treated as one continuous map.

The most important internal historical layer in Tears of the Kingdom is the relationship between the ancient Zora infrastructure and the present-day kingdom. The Ancient Zora Waterworks and the Zora writings connect the modern crisis to much older engineering and royal history. The Water Temple also reinforces the game’s broader pattern of placing ancient technology and forgotten structures above or below the familiar Surface.

The region’s design is built around a three-level contrast:

That contrast is why Lanayru feels larger than its Surface map label suggests. Its important routes do not stop at the roads around Zora’s Domain.

Is Zora’s Domain the whole of Lanayru?

No. Zora’s Domain is the region’s principal settlement, but Lanayru also includes Lanayru Wetlands, Lanayru Great Spring, Mount Lanayru, the Lanayru sky areas and associated Depths.

Should Mount Lanayru be counted as part of Lanayru?

Yes, in the broad regional sense. It is a distinct subarea and should be listed separately from Lanayru Great Spring when organising shrines, caves and landmarks.

Do I need to complete the Water Temple before exploring Lanayru?

No. Much of the Wetlands, Mount Lanayru and the Great Spring can be explored beforehand. However, some routes, characters, abilities and sludge-clearing activities are tied to the Zora quest.

What is the best tower for Zora’s Domain?

Upland Zorana Skyview Tower is the most useful tower for the Great Spring and Zora’s Domain. Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower helps with the western approach, while Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower is better for the southeastern mountain and sky areas.

Why can I not climb easily in Lanayru?

Rain and wet rock reduce climbing reliability. Use caves, ledges, waterfalls, Zonai devices, stamina meals and later the Zora waterfall routes instead of trying to scale every exposed cliff.

Is the Water Temple on the Surface?

No. It is on Wellspring Island in the sky, above the Lanayru Great Spring. The route to it passes through the Ancient Zora Waterworks and the Wellspring Island approach.

This guide is a researched regional overview rather than a guaranteed game-data export. The main boundary issue is that different guide sites group border locations differently. In particular, the practical map regions used by Skyview Tower guides, shrine guides and Zelda Wiki category pages do not always use identical borders.

The following points should be checked against an authoritative interactive map or in-game map before treating this as a strict 100% directory:

Accordingly, the directories above should be treated as substantially researched but not an asserted exhaustive database. The major named districts, settlements, shrines, caves, wells, sky locations, story areas and Depths landmarks are included, while low-level collectible placements and every unnamed decorative building require a dedicated map-by-map verification pass.
