Overview
Jikais Shrine is a Shrine of Light on the eastern slope of Mount Lanayru in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Its trial, Jailbreak, is a compact environmental puzzle built around movable stone blocks, metal slabs and Link’s Ascend ability. The shrine contains one optional treasure chest and awards a Light of Blessing when completed.
This guide covers the shrine itself, its immediate entrance area and its directly corresponding Depths landmark. It does not treat Mount Lanayru, Lanayru Range, Hateno Village or the surrounding mountain region as part of the shrine’s boundaries. The nearby Siakij Lightroot is also a separate Depths location, although the two locations correspond vertically on the world map.
Location and boundaries
Jikais Shrine stands on Mount Lanayru, east of Lanayru Range and southeast of Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower. It is also northeast of Hateno Village. The shrine’s entrance is exposed to the mountain’s cold conditions, so Link should have either cold-resistant clothing or a suitable meal or elixir before making the approach.
The shrine’s usable interior begins after activating the green shrine sigil. The surrounding mountain slope is an approach area rather than part of the Jailbreak trial. There are no named settlements, shops, characters or mission hubs attached to Jikais Shrine itself.
Related but separate locations
Siakij Lightroot is the shrine’s corresponding Depths location, but it is not an underground extension of Jikais Shrine. It is a separate Lightroot that can be discovered and activated independently.

About this guide
Major puzzle spoilers below.
Reaching Jikais Shrine
Recommended route from Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower
The simplest approach is to travel to Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower, launch from the tower and glide generally southeast towards the shrine. The shrine is close enough to make this a practical route, although Link may need to land on the mountainside and climb or walk the final distance.
The shrine itself does not require a special quest, dungeon key or story event. Once found, it can be activated immediately, provided Link can reach the entrance.
Suggested exploration route
The tower launch is convenient, but it is not the only possible approach. The shrine can also be reached by climbing or travelling across Mount Lanayru’s surface terrain.
---
Jikais Shrine is a pure puzzle shrine. There are no hostile constructs, traps that damage Link, mini-bosses or combat sections. The central idea is to move blocks into useful positions, then use Ascend to pass through them or the structures above them.
Suggested exploration route
- 01Activate Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower if it is not already available.
- 02Launch from the tower and glide southeast towards the shrine marker.
- 03Land safely on the eastern slope of Mount Lanayru.
- 04Activate Jikais Shrine before beginning the puzzle.
- 05Complete the Jailbreak trial.
- 06Collect the Magic Staff from the elevated chest.
- 07Reach the altar and claim the Light of Blessing.
- 08If exploring the wider region, use the completed shrine as a fast-travel point before continuing towards Hateno Village, Lanayru or the Depths.
1. Rearrange the opening blocks
The first room contains several movable stone blocks set into rails or recessed spaces in the walls.
Begin by moving the large stone block on the lower-left side towards the right. This helps create a route towards the upper section. The exact placement does not need to be pixel-perfect, but the block should be positioned so that Link can use it as a stepping or gliding point.
Next, move the central or upper-right square block towards the left. The goal is to place it beneath a usable section of ceiling or wall recess. Once it is in position:
Several walkthroughs describe the opening arrangement in slightly different terms, but they agree on the essential solution: move the blocks into alignment, Ascend through the upper block, then glide to the larger platform.
1. Rearrange the opening blocks: steps
- 01Stand beneath the movable block.
- 02Use Ascend to pass through it.
- 03Reach the higher recess.
- 04Glide across to the larger block on the opposite side.
2. Use the second block to reach the upper passage
After gliding to the larger block, look for another square block that can be moved beneath the next recess in the wall.
Move this block into alignment with the recess above. Then:
This leads to the next section of the shrine. The important point is that the blocks are not simply platforms. They are temporary Ascend targets that allow Link to bypass the apparent vertical barriers.
2. Use the second block to reach the upper passage: steps
- 01Stand below the block.
- 02Ascend through it.
- 03Enter the small recess or niche.
- 04Use Ascend again through the ceiling or upper surface.
3. Collect the optional Magic Staff
In the next section, look up and to the right. An elevated ledge holds the shrine’s only treasure chest.
Use Ascend through the ledge or platform above Link to reach it. Open the chest to obtain a Magic Staff, generally listed by walkthrough sources as a 4-power weapon.
Treasure directory
The chest is not required to complete the shrine. It is possible to proceed directly towards the final puzzle section, but collecting it before leaving ensures that the shrine’s treasure is not overlooked.
Treasure directory
| Location | Contents | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Elevated platform in the middle section | Magic Staff | Optional chest |
4. Place the first metal slab
Return to ground level and look for a flat metal slab leaning against a wall or column.
Pick it up with Ultrahand and place it across the path. The useful arrangement is roughly horizontal across the walkway, with the slab positioned underneath the suspended stone structure ahead.
The slab acts as a temporary roof or platform:
If Ascend does not activate, adjust the slab so that Link is clearly beneath a solid surface. The slab should remain close enough to the path that Link can stand beneath its middle section.
4. Place the first metal slab: steps
- 01Centre the slab below the hanging structure.
- 02Walk underneath it.
- 03Use Ascend through the slab or the structure above.
- 04Continue into the next area.
5. Escape the cage
The final puzzle places Link inside a large cage-like structure. The exit is above the bars, so simply walking around the floor does not complete the shrine.
A second flat slab is positioned nearby, outside or beside the cage. Pick it up and place it across one of the cage’s upper corners. The slab should rest securely enough to provide a surface through which Link can Ascend.
This is the shrine’s final “jailbreak”. The slab does not need to form a bridge across the entire cage. It only needs to create a stable Ascend point above Link.
Use the following method
- 01Pick up the remaining slab with Ultrahand.
- 02Lay it across a corner of the cage.
- 03Check that Link can stand beneath it.
- 04Use Ascend to pass through the slab.
- 05Move onto the top of the cage.
- 06Drop down on the far side, outside the bars.
6. Claim the Light of Blessing
After escaping the cage, follow the short path to the glowing altar. Interact with it to complete Jikais Shrine and receive one Light of Blessing.
Completing the shrine also makes it available as a permanent fast-travel point, and the altar restores Link’s health as part of the normal shrine-completion sequence.

Fixed rewards
The Light of Blessing is guaranteed. The Magic Staff is also a fixed chest reward rather than a random drop.

Cold weather applies outside, not inside
The main environmental hazard is the cold mountain weather around the shrine entrance. Once inside Jikais Shrine, the outdoor temperature hazard is no longer the problem, so cold-resistance equipment is mainly needed for the approach.
Do not overbuild the solutions
The shrine provides all the necessary blocks and slabs. There is no need to construct a vehicle or use Zonai devices from Link’s inventory. Ultrahand is required to reposition the puzzle pieces, while Ascend is the key traversal ability.
If Ascend will not activate
Ascend requires a solid surface above Link and enough clearance for the ability to reach it. If the green Ascend indicator does not appear:
Recovering misplaced blocks
If a block falls into an inconvenient position, use Ultrahand to pull it back into the room. The trial is designed around repositioning, so a failed placement normally does not permanently block progress.
---
Jikais Shrine is an isolated puzzle site rather than a settlement or staffed facility.
Businesses and services
These omissions are deliberate: nearby Hateno Village and the Mount Lanayru region contain broader settlement and travel infrastructure, but those places are outside Jikais Shrine’s boundaries.
---
The trial name Jailbreak describes the shrine’s structure directly. Link first navigates a series of enclosed recesses, then passes through a final cage by creating an Ascend route with a metal slab. The puzzle therefore uses imprisonment and escape as both its visual theme and its mechanical objective.
Jikais Shrine also illustrates one of *Tears of the Kingdom*’s recurring puzzle patterns: an apparently inaccessible upper route is often reachable by changing the position of an otherwise ordinary object. Here, the blocks and slabs are not weapons or construction materials in the usual sense. They are temporary ceilings that let Ascend replace conventional climbing.
The shrine is associated with Siakij Lightroot in the Depths. As with other surface Shrine of Light and Depths Lightroot relationships, this gives the player a useful vertical map reference, but the two locations remain separate activities with separate entrances and rewards.
