Key takeaways

  • Zakusu Shrine is in Naydra Snowfield, not in the nearby Spring of Wisdom itself.
  • You must complete The High Spring and the Light Rings before the shrine appears.
  • The quest begins by speaking to Nazbi near the Spring of Wisdom below Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower.
  • The shrine trial removes Link’s equipment and tests combat, Ascend, Recall, ranged attacks and improvised weapons.
  • After defeating every Construct, the exit opens and a chest becomes available.
  • The normal listed chest reward is a Soldier III Spear, although weapon strength can scale with game progression and some guides report a Soldier IV Spear or an equivalent stronger weapon.

About this guide

Base game guide for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Major spoilers: this guide reveals the shrine quest, the shrine trial, its enemies and its reward.

Overview

Zakusu Shrine is a Shrine of Light on the surface of Hyrule, in the Naydra Snowfield area of the Mount Lanayru region. Its trial is “Proving Grounds: Ascension”, a combat challenge in which Link begins without his normal equipment and must defeat a group of Zonai Constructs using weapons, materials and traversal tools found inside the shrine.

Unlike most shrines, Zakusu Shrine is not simply waiting in the open world to be entered. It is revealed by completing The High Spring and the Light Rings, a shrine quest involving Nazbi, a sky island above the Spring of Wisdom and a timed shield-surfing route through seven green rings. The shrine lies south-west of the Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower, at approximately 3527, -1482, 0168. Some references record the shrine slightly differently, around 3526, -1482, 0182, because map markers and entrance height can vary.

Location and boundaries

Zakusu Shrine belongs to the Mount Lanayru section of the surface map, but its immediate local setting is Naydra Snowfield. It is south-west of the Naydra Snowfield Chasm and south-west of the Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower. The Spring of Wisdom is part of the access route and quest context, but it is a separate nearby landmark rather than part of the shrine itself.

It does not include the whole of Mount Lanayru, the Skyview Tower interior, the Naydra Snowfield Chasm or the wider Lanayru Great Spring region.

Named locations within the access route

The shrine itself has no shop, settlement, stable, inn or permanent service area. Nazbi is a quest-associated visitor rather than a resident of Zakusu Shrine.

Access and route

Starting the shrine quest

The route is easiest if Link has a usable shield that can be surfed on. A shield with an unsuitable fused attachment may interfere with shield surfing, so switch to an ordinary shield beforehand if necessary. The cold climate around Mount Lanayru also makes cold resistance advisable. Snowquill equipment or cold-resistance meals are suitable preparations.

Starting the shrine quest

  1. 01
Travel to the Spring of Wisdom, below Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
Speak to Nazbi, who is camped near the approach to the spring.
  3. 03
Accept The High Spring and the Light Rings.
  4. 04
Launch from Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower and glide towards the small sky island above the spring.
  5. 05
Examine the sigil or quest terminal on the island.
  6. 06
Begin the shield-surfing sequence through the green rings.
  7. 07
Follow the descending light and pass through all seven rings before the sequence expires.
  8. 08
Once the final ring is cleared, Zakusu Shrine appears on the snowy surface below.

The High Spring and the Light Rings

The quest is a timed descent rather than a conventional puzzle. After activating the terminal on the sky island, Link must shield-surf down the mountain and pass through a chain of green rings. The next ring is indicated by the beam or trail of light, so the important technique is to keep descending rather than stopping to search at ground level.

The seven-ring sequence is the shrine’s true entrance condition. Completing the quest causes the shrine to emerge at the end of the route. The shrine is not normally accessible before this point, and sources note that it may not be marked by the Shrine Sensor until it has been revealed.

Shrine layout and trial

Zakusu Shrine’s internal challenge is Proving Grounds: Ascension. On entry, Link loses his normal armour, weapons and shield. The shrine supplies a small selection of basic equipment and places enemies on several vertical levels. The intended solution is to climb through the chamber, using Ascend, moving platforms and improvised weapons to gain the height advantage.

Enemy directory

The exact weapon attachments and strength of some enemies can vary with world progression, but the named enemy types associated with Zakusu Shrine are:

The Captain Construct is generally found in the upper section and is more dangerous than the Soldier Constructs. The shrine is also a useful controlled encounter for players seeking Construct parts, particularly if they are looking for a Captain Construct II Horn.

Walkthrough: Proving Grounds: Ascension

1. Collect the starting equipment

Immediately take the basic weapons, shield, bow and arrows provided near the entrance. Do not rush into the main room without collecting them. Fuse available Construct horns or other materials to a basic weapon as soon as possible to improve its attack power.

2. Clear the first enemies carefully

Use the bow to attack exposed enemies from a distance. Headshots can stagger Constructs and create an opening for a close-range attack. If an enemy is positioned on a lower platform, avoid dropping into the middle of several enemies at once.

A cautious opening is usually safer than trying to climb immediately. Remove the most exposed Soldier Constructs first, then collect their dropped horns and weapons.

3. Use Ascend to change levels

Look for bridges and flat surfaces overhead. Ascend can bypass parts of the chamber and place Link directly on a higher platform. This is the central idea of the trial: rather than fighting every Construct on its own level, Link can climb above them and attack from a better position.

The combat shrine guide specifically recommends using Ascend beneath the bridge and collecting a spiked weapon from the upper area.

4. Exploit height and ranged attacks

Once Link reaches an upper platform, use the bow against Constructs below or across gaps. This is particularly useful against enemies with fused weapons, since it reduces the time spent in close combat.

Keep moving after firing. The shrine’s platforms are narrow, and standing still can leave Link vulnerable to thrown weapons or energy attacks.

5. Manipulate the moving platform

A platform travelling along a rail can be controlled with Recall. Use Recall to bring it back or hold it in a useful position, then jump onto it to reach a higher section. This route leads towards an upper area containing additional equipment and a Fire Fruit tree according to the shrine walkthrough.

6. Deal with the laser hazard

One section is protected by laser beams. Triggering them causes a time bomb to fall from above. If you activate the lasers, move away immediately and wait for the explosion to finish before returning.

The laser room also contains rockets. Fuse one to a shield and activate the shield to launch Link upwards. This provides an alternative to the balloon route.

7. Reach the uppermost enemies

A balloon in the chamber can also be used as a lift. A torch or other fire source can provide the heat needed to raise it. This is slower than a rocket shield but can be useful if the rockets have already been consumed or if you prefer a controlled ascent.

The highest section contains the more dangerous enemies, including the Captain Construct. Approach it with a bow ready, interrupt its attacks where possible and avoid allowing it to force Link onto an exposed edge.

8. Defeat every Construct

The exit remains closed until all the enemies have been defeated. Check lower ledges and side platforms if the door does not open. It is easy to overlook a Soldier Construct below the main route after climbing to the top.

When the final Construct falls, the exit door opens and Link’s equipment is restored.

Rewards and collectibles

Shrine reward

The Light of Blessing is awarded after examining the shrine’s altar once the combat trial is complete.

Treasure chest

This difference is best treated as game-progression scaling rather than a separate chest or alternate shrine. The chest is obtained after clearing the Constructs and before examining the altar.

Collectible directory

The ordinary weapons and materials inside the trial are temporary challenge resources. They should not be treated as permanent collectibles. Construct drops are enemy loot rather than fixed treasure-chest rewards.

Hazards and common mistakes

Cold weather

The route around Mount Lanayru is cold. Prepare cold resistance before travelling to the Spring of Wisdom or the shrine site. This is a surface hazard associated with the approach, not a special mechanic inside the shrine.

Missing the ring route

The light-ring course is timed. The most common failure is slowing down after passing one ring and losing sight of the next. Follow the light immediately and maintain momentum.

Entering the shrine under-equipped

The shrine removes Link’s normal equipment, so bringing powerful weapons does not make the Proving Grounds fight easier. What matters is entering with enough health, knowing how to use Ascend and Recall, and being ready to fuse basic weapons with enemy parts.

Falling between platforms

The chamber contains several gaps. Glide rather than drop whenever possible. If Link falls to a lower level, look for an overhead surface suitable for Ascend instead of trying to climb the outer walls.

Ignoring the last enemy

If the exit does not open, one Construct is still alive. Search below the upper platforms and around the side routes, particularly near the laser and balloon sections.
