About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers the Shrine Quest required to reveal Mayanas Shrine, the shrine’s puzzle, its treasure chest and the surrounding islands in the base game of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Overview

Mayanas Shrine is a Shrine of Light in the South Lanayru Sky Archipelago, above the Lanayru Sea and close to Valor Island. Unlike a shrine that can simply be entered when found, Mayanas Shrine initially appears as an inactive shrine base. Link must first complete The South Lanayru Sky Crystal, a Shrine Quest that involves reaching a higher island, cutting through vines and transporting a green crystal back to the shrine.

Once activated, Mayanas Shrine presents the trial “The Ice Guides You”. The puzzle uses water, ice sheets, Frost Emitters and movable stone slabs. The central idea is to make ice slide down ramps and strike targets, with the optional chest requiring a larger construction that stops the ice from falling into the spikes.

Mayanas Shrine is a compact but useful stop in the Lanayru sky because it provides a fast-travel point near the South Lanayru Sky Archipelago and a convenient launch point for exploring the islands around Valor Island.

Location and boundaries

Mayanas Shrine belongs to the South Lanayru Sky Archipelago, a group of sky islands above the Lanayru Sea. The shrine is positioned on one island within that group, while the related crystal is located on a separate, higher island reached by following the green beam. The surrounding islands, vehicle-building platforms and crystal cave are therefore relevant to the Shrine Quest, but they are not all part of Mayanas Shrine’s interior.

The shrine is also described as being above or near Wintre Island and close to Valor Island. These are neighbouring landmarks and should not be treated as subareas of Mayanas Shrine itself. Valor Island is especially useful as a navigation reference, but Mayanas Shrine is located in the South Lanayru sky-island group rather than on the island’s challenge area.

Scope clarification

The following are nearby connections rather than parts of the shrine:

The South Lanayru Sky Archipelago provides the route to Mayanas Shrine, but nearby sky islands may contain their own devices, Constructs or other points of interest. They should not be folded into the shrine’s directory unless they are directly involved in reaching or completing the Shrine Quest.

Access and routes

The most straightforward route begins at Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower. Launch from the tower and glide north-east towards the South Lanayru Sky Archipelago. The first islands may be too far away to reach by gliding alone, so look for the pre-built Zonai vehicles and floating platforms placed along the route.

The exact route can vary depending on how much stamina, battery capacity and Zonai equipment Link has. The intended path uses available flying or hovering devices to hop between the islands. Some guides describe using a vehicle with fans and a Steering Stick, while others use floating platforms and rockets to gain height. Both approaches are consistent with the area’s design.

Practical preparation

Bring or obtain at least one of the following:

The quest does not require a particular armour set or story quest. The key requirement is simply reaching the South Lanayru Sky Archipelago and having a way to remove the vines covering the crystal.

The South Lanayru Sky Crystal

Starting the Shrine Quest

When Link reaches the inactive shrine, examine its green terminal. This starts The South Lanayru Sky Crystal and activates a green beam leading towards the crystal’s location. The quest may also be triggered by interacting with the shrine base or the crystal, depending on the order in which the player reaches the area.

The crystal is not inside the shrine. It is found on a higher island to the north-east, around the area listed by one source as approximately 4828, -0786, 1896. Treat this as a navigation reference rather than a necessary exact coordinate, since the crystal’s position is easier to identify by following the beam.

Route alternatives

There is no single mandatory vehicle design. The important requirements are:

A vehicle with fans and a Steering Stick is the most controllable option. A Rocket-assisted floating platform can be useful for gaining height, while a simple Wing machine is suitable for the return journey if Link has sufficient battery power.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Examine the inactive Mayanas Shrine. This activates The South Lanayru Sky Crystal and reveals the direction of the missing crystal.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Travel towards the north-east side of the island group. Use the nearby pre-built vehicle, floating platforms, rockets or another Zonai machine. If the first machine is awkward to control, preserve it and use the replacement devices found on the next island.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Gain height towards the green beam. The crystal is on a higher island or ledge. Depending on the route, Link may need to use Ascend, rockets, a floating platform or a flying machine.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Find the vine-covered opening. The entrance to the crystal’s enclosed area is blocked by dry vines. Cut them with a bladed weapon or burn them with fire.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Enter the enclosed area and retrieve the crystal. The crystal is behind another layer of vines. Clear the obstruction, then pick it up.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Build or reuse a flying machine. Nearby Zonai parts can be used to create a machine with a Wing, fans, a Steering Stick and, if needed, a Sled or other stabilising component. Alternatively, repair and reuse the machine used to reach the upper island.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Attach the crystal to the vehicle. Fuse or attach the crystal to a secure part of the machine. Placing it where it will not obstruct the Steering Stick makes the return flight easier.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Fly back to the shrine island. Land near Mayanas Shrine. Avoid dropping the crystal into open space. If it falls, it can generally be recovered by returning to its landing point or restarting the nearby approach, but preventing a fall is much quicker.

Shrine Quest walkthrough

  1. 01
Carry the crystal to the shrine base. Detach it from the machine and place it at the inactive shrine. The shrine will activate, allowing Link to enter.

Shrine interior: The Ice Guides You

Mayanas Shrine is a puzzle shrine built around ice sheets. The ice can be created from water using a Frost Emitter or Ice Fruit, then sent down slopes to strike targets. The shrine is not a combat trial and does not contain a regular enemy encounter in the puzzle rooms.

Useful mechanics

The ice sheets are temporary, so do not spend too long arranging a device before creating them. It is usually easier to build the structure first, then produce the ice.

Main puzzle walkthrough

First room: hit the target

The target opens the route to the next section. If the ice misses, reposition the Frost Emitter or place the ice sheet more centrally before releasing it. The first puzzle is intended to teach the shrine’s basic rule: make ice, place it on the slope and let it slide into the target.

Second room: crossing the spikes

The second puzzle adds a spike-filled section and several solid stone slabs. The slabs are used to make a platform that blocks the far end of the spike area, preventing the ice from sliding away or being destroyed before it reaches the target.

The precise angle is more important than the exact shape. The platform must cover the relevant gap and prevent the ice from continuing into the spikes. If the ice slips away, move the slabs closer to the target and make the platform longer or more squarely aligned with the slope.

Optional chest

The shrine chest is in the second puzzle area. It is not on the direct route to the altar, so it is possible to finish the main puzzle without opening it.

The chest is fixed shrine content, not a random drop. If you leave the shrine before opening it, you can return later through fast travel and collect it.

Completing the shrine

After the target puzzle is solved, proceed to the altar and interact with the green terminal. Link receives one Light of Blessing, and the shrine becomes a permanent fast-travel point. Completing the shrine also restores Link’s health in the usual way for a completed Shrine of Light.

First room: hit the target

  1. 01
Enter the first room and locate the Frost Emitter beside the pool.
  2. 02
Use it to freeze the water and create an ice sheet.
  3. 03
Pick up the ice sheet with Ultrahand if necessary.
  4. 04
Place it at the top of the sloping track.
  5. 05
Aim the Frost Emitter so that new ice forms in the correct direction.
  6. 06
Release the ice sheet down the slope.
  7. 07
The ice should slide into the target at the lower end.

Second room: crossing the spikes

  1. 01
Find the four solid stone slabs in the room.
  2. 02
Use Ultrahand to combine them into two pairs.
  3. 03
Position the paired slabs so they form a stable barrier over the spike section.
  4. 04
Join the two pairs into a longer arrangement, effectively creating a four-slab platform.
  5. 05
Place the platform close to the target, at the end of the route.
  6. 06
Use the nearby ladder to return to the higher part of the slope.
  7. 07
Create another ice sheet with the Frost Emitter.
  8. 08
Send the ice down the slope.
  9. 09
The stone arrangement should stop or guide the ice so that it strikes the target.

Optional chest: To reach it

  1. 01
Build the slab platform across the spike area.
  2. 02
Use the platform as a safe route or stepping surface.
  3. 03
Climb or glide towards the chest’s ledge.
  4. 04
Open the chest to receive a Mighty Zonaite Shield.

Items and rewards directory

Equipment and devices in the surrounding area

The sky islands around Mayanas Shrine contain pre-placed Zonai devices and materials intended to help with the Shrine Quest. Their precise arrangement may be described differently by different guides because the route can be approached from several islands. Commonly reported equipment includes:

These are environmental resources rather than permanent shrine rewards. They are used to reach the crystal or return it to the shrine.

Enemies, characters and services

Mayanas Shrine has no resident, shop, named NPC or faction associated with it. It is an isolated sky shrine and quest location.

Some approaches to the crystal may pass near or through areas containing Construct enemies, including a Soldier Construct reported on a movable platform or nearby floating island. These encounters belong to the surrounding route, not the Mayanas Shrine interior. They are not required to be treated as part of the shrine’s main puzzle, and the crystal can be reached without turning the shrine into a combat challenge.

Facilities and checkpoints

Mayanas Shrine fast travel

Before activation, the shrine is only a quest objective and cannot function as a completed Shrine of Light. After Link returns the crystal and enters the shrine, it becomes a fast-travel point.

Zonai device resources

The neighbouring islands provide the most important practical facility in the area: pre-built or partially assembled Zonai vehicles. These are mission-support equipment rather than shops or permanent stations. Do not treat the presence of a device dispenser as confirmed unless it is specifically identified at the island you are visiting. The available sources consistently verify vehicle parts and pre-built machines, but do not establish a complete named list of dispensers within Mayanas Shrine’s boundaries.

For a smooth first visit

  1. 01
Travel to Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
    Launch and glide north-east.
  3. 03
Land on the first reachable island with a vehicle.
  4. 04
Use the island vehicles to continue towards the South Lanayru Sky Archipelago.
  5. 05
Activate Mayanas Shrine to start The South Lanayru Sky Crystal.
  6. 06
Follow the beam to the north-east side of the island group.
  7. 07
    Reach the higher vine-covered island.
  8. 08
Cut or burn through the vines and collect the crystal.
  9. 09
Build or repair a flying machine.
  10. 10
Return the crystal to Mayanas Shrine.
  11. 11
    Complete the first ice target.
  12. 12
In the second room, build the slab barrier before creating the final ice sheet.
  13. 13
    Collect the Mighty Zonaite Shield.
  14. 14
    Claim the Light of Blessing.

Practical checklist

Before leaving the area, confirm that you have:

Hazards and common mistakes

Mistaking the inactive shrine for a completed shrine

The green shrine structure is visible before the quest is complete, but the shrine interior is unavailable. Activate the terminal and follow the crystal beam rather than repeatedly trying to enter.

Trying to reach the crystal by gliding directly

The crystal is on a higher island. A direct glide often leaves Link short of the ledge. Use the nearby devices, Ascend, rockets or a flying machine to gain height.

Forgetting a cutting or fire tool

The crystal is behind vines. A bladed weapon, Fire Fruit or another fire method is required to open the route.

Losing the crystal during the return flight

Attach it securely and land near the shrine. Do not attempt an unnecessarily long flight if the machine is running low on battery. It is safer to land on an intermediate island and make a second vehicle if needed.

Making the second ice sheet too soon

Build the stone platform over the spike section first. If you create the ice before the route is ready, it may disappear while you are still arranging the slabs.

Ignoring the optional chest

The chest is in the second puzzle area rather than directly beside the final altar. If you are completing every shrine chest, deliberately detour for it before leaving.

Lore and design notes

Mayanas Shrine’s trial title, The Ice Guides You, describes both the puzzle’s mechanics and its intended method. The player is not expected to carry ice manually across the room. Instead, the ice itself becomes a moving projectile, and the shrine teaches the player to control its direction indirectly with slopes and barriers.

The external quest follows a related design principle. The shrine is visible, but access is indirect: the player must read the beam, interpret the vertical route through the sky islands and use Zonai technology to transport the crystal. The quest therefore combines navigation, vehicle construction and environmental puzzle-solving before the shrine’s own ice puzzle begins.

Mayanas Shrine is a Tears of the Kingdom location and has no confirmed appearance as the same shrine in an earlier game. Its placement in the sky, the crystal activation requirement and the Zonai-device route are specific to the game’s Sky layer and its vehicle-building systems.
