Key takeaways
- Mustuto Lightroot is in the Gerudo Highlands Depths, at approximately (-4469, -0672, -0949).
- It is directly associated with Otutsum Shrine on the surface, following the game’s shrine and Lightroot correspondence.
- The easiest approach is generally through a nearby chasm or by travelling from another activated Lightroot, then following the Depths terrain westwards.
- Activating it illuminates the surrounding map and unlocks a fast-travel point.
- The surrounding area is part of the dark Gerudo Highlands Depths, so gloom, cliffs and limited visibility are more important hazards than a dedicated puzzle.
- Mustuto Lightroot has no confirmed named residents, businesses, mission-exclusive rooms or unique boss encounter within its immediate site.

Base game guide. This page covers Mustuto Lightroot itself and the immediately associated location links, rather than treating the whole Gerudo Highlands Depths as part of the site.
Overview
Mustuto Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Gerudo Highlands Depths of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It sits in the far-western Depths, beneath the northern Gerudo Highlands, and serves two main purposes: it reveals the surrounding section of the Depths map and provides a permanent fast-travel point once activated. Its surface counterpart is Otutsum Shrine, located in the Gerudo Highlands near Risoka Snowfield.
Mustuto Lightroot is not a settlement, mine, dungeon or broad regional hub. No separately named town, shop, faction base or multi-room subarea is verified as belonging to the Lightroot itself. The nearby Gerudo Canyon Mine and the Stamayam Lightroot are separate locations, although they are useful navigation references when approaching Mustuto.
Location and boundaries
Mustuto Lightroot belongs to the Gerudo Highlands Depths, not the Gerudo Desert Depths. This distinction matters because the underground map is divided into named regional areas, and the Lightroot is listed with the Gerudo Highlands group alongside locations such as Stamayam, Umamustor, Kawiraus, Kimakarut, Jadukakar and Sisustom Lightroots.
The Lightroot’s immediate site is a small natural Depths location centred on the glowing root and its activation pedestal. It should not be expanded into the entire surrounding Gerudo Highlands Depths region. In particular:

Surface counterpart: Otutsum Shrine
Mustuto Lightroot corresponds to Otutsum Shrine, a Shrine of Light in the northern Gerudo Highlands. The shrine is in the Risoka Snowfield area, and its published surface coordinates are approximately (-4468, -0670, 0509).
Otutsum Shrine is a Rauru’s Blessing shrine. That means the shrine’s interior is not a conventional combat or puzzle trial. Once Link reaches the shrine, the main reward is obtained at the altar. Shrine guides identify the location as a checkpoint near the Gerudo Highlands Chasm and list the normal shrine completion reward, a Light of Blessing.
The shrine and Lightroot relationship is useful in both directions:
Otutsum Shrine directory
The shrine is not a subarea of Mustuto Lightroot. It is included here only because it is the Lightroot’s surface counterpart.

Surface counterpart: Otutsum Shrine: steps
- 01If you discover Otutsum Shrine on the surface, check the corresponding underground position for Mustuto Lightroot.
- 02If Mustuto Lightroot is active, inspect the surface map directly above it for the shrine marker.
- 03The surface and Depths coordinates share the same general horizontal position, but their height values differ because they occupy separate layers.
What Mustuto Lightroot does
Like other Lightroots, Mustuto Lightroot has three practical functions.
1. Map illumination
Activating the root brightens the surrounding Depths and reveals the nearby underground map. Before activation, this part of the Gerudo Highlands Depths is difficult to read and navigation is much more dangerous because cliffs, gloom patches and terrain boundaries are hidden in darkness.
The revealed map does not automatically activate every nearby Lightroot. It only makes the surrounding area visible and gives you a clearer idea of where other roots, mines and routes lie.
2. Fast travel
Once activated, Mustuto Lightroot becomes a permanent travel point. This makes it useful as a western Gerudo Highlands staging point, especially if you are:
3. Gloom recovery point
Lightroots provide a safe illuminated point in an otherwise gloom-heavy environment. The surrounding Depths can still contain gloom and hostile enemies, but the Lightroot itself is a useful place to pause, recover your bearings and prepare before continuing.
The Lightroot is not a normal healing shrine. It should be treated primarily as a navigation and travel facility.

Reaching Mustuto Lightroot
Recommended approach
The exact route depends on which chasms and Lightroots you have already activated, but the general method is consistent:
One guide places Mustuto Lightroot north of Stamayam Lightroot, while another describes it in relation to Gerudo Canyon Mine. These are useful directional references, but they should not be interpreted as evidence that Stamayam or the mine forms part of Mustuto’s subarea.
Surface-to-Depths route
Because Otutsum Shrine is directly above the Lightroot, the most straightforward conceptual route is:
There is no indication that Otutsum Shrine itself contains a direct tunnel to Mustuto Lightroot. The shrine and Lightroot are geographically paired, not necessarily physically connected by a vertical passage.
---
Recommended approach
- 01Enter the Depths through a suitable chasm in or near the Gerudo Highlands.
- 02Activate the nearest accessible Lightroot first if the route is completely dark.
- 03Open the Depths map and identify Mustuto Lightroot at roughly -4469, -0672.
- 04Travel through the illuminated terrain, using the map to avoid major cliffs and gloom pools.
- 05Use Brightbloom Seeds on the way if you are moving through unlit ground.
- 06Activate Mustuto Lightroot when you reach the glowing root.
- 07Use the new fast-travel point to continue towards Gerudo Canyon Mine or the neighbouring regional Lightroots.
Surface-to-Depths route
- 01Locate Otutsum Shrine in the Gerudo Highlands near Risoka Snowfield.
- 02Mark the shrine on the surface map.
- 03Compare its horizontal coordinates with the Depths map.
- 04Enter the Depths through the nearest practical chasm rather than attempting to descend directly through solid terrain.
- 05Navigate towards the matching position below the shrine.
Nearby connections
Gerudo Canyon Mine
Gerudo Canyon Mine is a separate named Depths location near Mustuto Lightroot. It is an important navigation landmark when travelling through the western Gerudo Highlands Depths. Published location guides describe Mustuto Lightroot as being west of, or near, Gerudo Canyon Mine.
Do not treat the mine as a room or extension of Mustuto Lightroot. It has its own location identity, terrain and possible collectible content. Any ore deposits, enemies, devices or chests found inside the mine should be recorded under the mine rather than automatically attributed to Mustuto.
Stamayam Lightroot
Stamayam Lightroot is another distinct Lightroot in the same regional group. It lies south-west of Mustuto Lightroot according to regional location listings and nearby-Lightroot guides.
Wider Gerudo Highlands Depths
The Gerudo Highlands Depths contain several other named Lightroots, but they are not included in Mustuto Lightroot’s local boundary. The complete regional directory found in location guides includes:
These belong to the wider regional map rather than to Mustuto’s immediate site.

Hazards and preparation
Mustuto Lightroot is not documented as having a unique environmental gimmick, but standard Depths hazards remain relevant.
Darkness
The area is difficult to traverse before activation. Carry Brightbloom Seeds and throw or fire them ahead of you before crossing unfamiliar ground.
Gloom
Gloom-covered surfaces can reduce Link’s maximum hearts. Avoid unnecessary contact, and consider carrying Sundelion-based meals if you intend to remain underground for an extended expedition.
Vertical terrain
The Gerudo Highlands region is mountainous on the surface, and the Depths below it also contain steep terrain and large elevation changes. Ascend is often useful near ceilings, but it cannot be used through every rock formation. Keep stamina-restoring food available if you are climbing.
Hostile encounters
No unique boss is confirmed as part of Mustuto Lightroot itself. Ordinary Depths enemies may appear along the route, but encounters can vary according to the precise path taken and the surrounding locations visited. Do not assume that a nearby enemy camp is a permanent feature of the Lightroot platform unless it is directly verified in a map or in-game investigation.
---
Items and collectibles
The Lightroot itself is primarily a fixed facility. The verified sources consulted identify its location, coordinates, regional placement and surface counterpart, but do not establish a unique chest, named weapon, special armour piece or exclusive collectible at the root pedestal.
Not confirmed as part of the Lightroot itself
Nearby mine and Depths content should be checked separately. Absence of a verified listing here does not prove that no ordinary ore, Zonai device, enemy drop or loose material can occur in the wider surrounding terrain.
---
For a safe first visit
- 01Bring Brightbloom Seeds, arrows and several healing meals.
- 02Carry at least one meal that restores gloom-damaged hearts.
- 03Activate a nearby Lightroot before attempting the darkest part of the route.
- 04Follow the map edge and avoid crossing large unlit areas without marking them.
- 05Activate Stamayam Lightroot if approaching from the south-west.
- 06Continue towards Mustuto, checking the map for the Gerudo Canyon Mine landmark.
- 07Activate Mustuto Lightroot.
- 08Fast-travel back to it later and explore outward towards the mine and the remaining Gerudo Highlands Lightroots.
- 09On the surface, visit Otutsum Shrine if it remains incomplete.
- 10Compare the surface and Depths maps to identify any remaining unlit area beneath the northern Gerudo Highlands.
