About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide mentions the Yiga Clan, Master Kohga’s Depths storyline and the relationship between Lightroots and surface Shrines of Light.
Overview
This guide covers the Umamustor Lightroot area in the base game of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It treats the Lightroot itself and its immediate Depths surroundings as the location. The Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm, Rotsumamu Shrine and the surface Yiga Clan Hideout are neighbouring or corresponding locations, not interchangeable names for the Lightroot.

Introduction
Umamustor Lightroot is a small but useful Depths landmark beneath the Gerudo Highlands. It stands at the bottom of the Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm, directly below the surface area beside the Yiga Clan Hideout and near Rotsumamu Shrine. Activating it illuminates part of the surrounding Depths, removes the local map fog and creates a fast-travel point. Its position also makes it a convenient staging point for exploring the western Gerudo Highlands Depths.
Unlike a mine, enemy camp or dungeon, Umamustor Lightroot is primarily a navigation and recovery facility. Its immediate surroundings contain Yiga equipment, including two Hot-Air Balloons, but the Lightroot does not operate as a shop and has no named resident, quest giver or permanent settlement attached to it.
Location and boundaries
Umamustor Lightroot belongs to the Gerudo Highlands Depths, one of the regional divisions of the Depths. It should not be treated as the whole Gerudo Highlands Depths, which also contains other Lightroots, mines, chasms and larger landmarks. The Lightroot’s practical boundary is the illuminated landing area around the root and the nearby Yiga supply cache at the base of the chasm.
The Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm is the immediate access feature. It is a separate named location extending from the surface into the Depths. On the surface, the chasm lies near the Yiga Clan Hideout and east of the Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower. Rotsumamu Shrine is beside the chasm on the surface, while Umamustor Lightroot occupies the corresponding underground position.

What Umamustor Lightroot does
Lightroots are giant glowing roots found throughout the Depths. Activating one brightens a surrounding section of the underground map, reveals that area on the Purah Pad and unlocks the location as a Travel Point. Standing beneath the light also reverses the maximum-health effects of Gloom in the same general way as being on the Surface.
The Lightroot does not provide a Shrine-style Blessing of Light. It is also not a Forge Construct, Bargainer Statue, Zonai device dispenser or merchant.
Umamustor Lightroot therefore has three practical uses
- 01Reveal the map. Activating it removes the darkness around the Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm and exposes nearby terrain.
- 02Create a fast-travel destination. Once activated, Link can return to the site from the map.
- 03Recover from Gloom. If Gloom has reduced Link’s maximum hearts, standing under the Lightroot’s illumination helps restore the affected capacity.
Reaching Umamustor Lightroot
Route 1: Drop through Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm
This is the most direct route.
The chasm is covered by Gloom, so the descent and landing area can be difficult to read before activation. Bring Brightbloom Seeds, a glow effect or another reliable light source if this is your first visit. The Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm is a distinct map location, although it directly connects to the Lightroot below.
Route 2: Approach from another Depths Lightroot
If the chasm is inconvenient or the surface entrance is not yet safe to use, Umamustor can be approached through the Gerudo Highlands Depths. Activate another nearby Lightroot first, then travel through the underground terrain using Brightbloom Seeds, vehicles or the paraglider.
This route is less useful for a first visit because the surrounding Depths are dark until more Lightroots are activated. It becomes more convenient later, when Umamustor is being used as a travel hub for the western Gerudo region.
Route 1: Drop through Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm
- 01Travel to the surface area around the Yiga Clan Hideout.
- 02Locate the large chasm beside the hideout and near Rotsumamu Shrine.
- 03Descend through the opening.
- 04Use the paraglider to control the fall and avoid colliding with the chasm walls.
- 05Land near the glowing root at the bottom.
- 06Activate Umamustor Lightroot.
The Yiga supply cache
A small repository of Yiga supplies is located near Umamustor Lightroot. The most notable objects are two Hot-Air Balloons. These are environmental resources rather than a named shop or guaranteed reward chest. Their practical value is that they can be incorporated into vehicles, used for experimentation or provide parts for improvised aerial travel.
Do not confuse this cache with a Yiga Clan base. The nearby supplies indicate Yiga activity in the area, but the Lightroot site itself is not presented as a full Yiga settlement, staffed outpost or mission hub.
Verified named entries within the immediate site
The supply repository and the balloons are descriptive entries rather than official proper names. They are included here to distinguish the confirmed environmental features from named locations.

Surface connection: Rotsumamu Shrine
Umamustor Lightroot corresponds to Rotsumamu Shrine, located above it on the Surface. This is part of a broader game-wide pattern: every Lightroot has a corresponding Shrine of Light, and the names are usually anagrams or reversals of one another. “Umamustor” and “Rotsumamu” demonstrate that relationship.
Rotsumamu Shrine is a separate location and should not be counted as part of the Lightroot’s inventory. The shrine contains its own Shrine content and reward structure, whereas Umamustor provides map illumination and fast travel.
Yiga Clan connections
The Lightroot’s main story association is with the Yiga Clan. It lies below the Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm, and the wider area is tied to the Yiga Clan’s movement between the Surface and the Depths. The chasm also has a Breath of the Wild continuity: in that game, Master Kohga’s defeat ends with him falling into the chasm. In Tears of the Kingdom, the location is reused as an entrance to the Depths and becomes part of the Yiga-related setting.
The Lightroot itself does not contain a named Yiga character or a guaranteed Yiga conversation. Master Kohga’s voice-memory material and Yiga-related progression are associated with the broader chasm and Depths storyline rather than being services offered at the Lightroot. Zelda Dungeon’s location record places the first Master Kohga voice-memory entry in the vicinity of the chasm, while the Lightroot page separately identifies the root as the underground landmark.
Enemies and hazards
No unique boss encounter is confirmed as part of Umamustor Lightroot itself. The principal hazards are environmental:
The safest first-visit procedure is to illuminate the route before moving away from the landing point. Once the root is active, return beneath its light whenever maximum-heart damage becomes a problem.
Walkthrough: activating Umamustor Lightroot
- 01Prepare before descending. Equip a light source or carry Brightbloom Seeds. If you expect to travel beyond the root, prepare Gloom recovery.
- 02Find the Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm. On the Surface, it is beside the Yiga Clan Hideout and close to Rotsumamu Shrine.
- 03Jump into the chasm. Open the paraglider during the fall and steer towards the lower landing area.
- 04Look for the glowing root. Its light is visible from the bottom once Link is close enough.
- 05Activate the root. This reveals the nearby map and unlocks the Travel Point.
- 06Inspect the nearby Yiga supplies. The two Hot-Air Balloons can be used as vehicle components, but they are not a shop inventory.
- 07Choose your next destination. Fast travel to the Surface, continue through the Gerudo Highlands Depths or use the Lightroot as a return point while exploring.
Practical exploration route
For a first visit, the most efficient route is:
For completion-focused exploration, activate Umamustor before attempting to map the wider area. Its illumination gives a fixed reference point beneath the western Gerudo Highlands and makes it easier to distinguish explored terrain from unexplored darkness.
Practical exploration route: steps
- 01Rotsumamu Shrine on the Surface.
- 02Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm.
- 03Umamustor Lightroot.
- 04Nearby Yiga supply cache.
- 05Return beneath the Lightroot to recover from Gloom.
- 06Fast travel back to the Surface or continue towards the next Gerudo Highlands Depths Lightroot.
