Key takeaways

  • Kimakarut Lightroot is in the Gerudo Highlands Depths, not the surface Gerudo Desert or Gerudo Highlands.
  • Its surface counterpart is Turakamik Shrine, with the same approximate horizontal position.
  • Activating it brightens the local Depths and reveals map data for the surrounding area.
  • It acts as a permanent Travel Gate, allowing fast travel after activation.
  • An Armoured Lynel is reported west of the root, behind a large branch-like structure. The exact colour can vary with world progression.
  • The nearby Abandoned Kara Kara Mine is a separate location It should not be treated as part of Kimakarut Lightroot’s immediate site.

About this guide

Scope: Base game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Location type: Lightroot in the Depths Region: Gerudo Highlands Depths Surface counterpart: Turakamik Shrine Status: Optional exploration location, fast-travel point and map-unlocking facility

Overview

Kimakarut Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Gerudo Highlands Depths, beneath the Gerudo region of Hyrule. It is a compact location rather than a settlement or dungeon, with no confirmed resident population, shop, quest hub or named internal subareas. Its importance comes from the standard Lightroot functions: activating it illuminates the surrounding Depths, reveals the local Depths map and creates a travel point for future fast travel.

The root is positioned east or north-east of the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine, depending on the map scale and the route used to approach it. A dangerous Lynel encounter is reported close to the root, making this a useful but potentially hazardous waypoint for players exploring the western and central Gerudo Depths. Kimakarut also provides a convenient launch point for reaching other Lightroots in the Gerudo Highlands Depths, particularly Jadukakar Lightroot.

The name is sometimes mistyped as “kimakaruT Lightroot”. The canonical in-game name is Kimakarut Lightroot.

Location and boundaries

Kimakarut Lightroot is a single Lightroot site. No larger named settlement, cave complex, mine district or dungeon is documented as belonging to it. The surrounding area is part of the broad Gerudo Highlands Depths, but the regional name should not be confused with the individually named sites nearby.

The most important boundary is the distinction between Kimakarut Lightroot and the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine. The mine lies to the west or south-west of the Lightroot, depending on the route and map orientation. It has its own enemies, resources, Forge Construct and other points of interest, and should be treated as a separate location rather than a child area of Kimakarut Lightroot.

Verified named entries within scope

The following name is the only confirmed named location at the site itself:

These places are relevant for navigation but are not subareas of Kimakarut Lightroot:

No separately named buildings, roads, businesses, settlements or facilities have been verified within the Lightroot’s own boundary.

Geography and visual surroundings

The Lightroot stands in a dark Depths cavern within the Gerudo Highlands underground region. As with other Lightroots, the root’s glowing plant structure is visible from a distance once the surrounding darkness has been partially reduced. The nearby terrain includes high rock formations, large subterranean branches and uneven cavern floors.

A large branch-like structure is particularly relevant because the nearby Lynel is reported to be positioned behind it. This can make the enemy difficult to identify before entering the area, especially when the surrounding map remains unlit.

Kimakarut’s position is also useful as a visual navigation point. Once active, the Lightroot can help orientate the player between the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine to the west and the northern or north-eastern routes towards other Gerudo Highlands Depths locations.

Surface counterpart: Turakamik Shrine

Kimakarut Lightroot corresponds to Turakamik Shrine on the surface. This is part of the wider Tears of the Kingdom map relationship in which Lightroots generally align with surface Shrines of Light. The two locations occupy approximately the same horizontal coordinates, although their vertical positions are separated by the surface and Depths layers.

Turakamik Shrine is a separate surface location. Its shrine puzzle, rewards and entrance route do not form part of the Kimakarut Lightroot area. Players can use the correspondence as a navigation aid:

The shrine and Lightroot relationship is especially useful when one location has already been found but the other has not.

Surface counterpart: Turakamik Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Open the surface map and locate Turakamik Shrine.
  2. 02
    Switch to the Depths map.
  3. 03
    Check the matching horizontal position.
  4. 04
Use nearby activated Lightroots, a nearby chasm or an aerial route to approach Kimakarut.

Access and recommended routes

From the Depths

The most reliable approach is to travel through the Gerudo Highlands Depths from another activated Lightroot. The area around Kimakarut is not reported as containing a special puzzle entrance, locked gate or mission-only access condition.

The root’s position east or north-east of the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine is confirmed by multiple location guides, although descriptions differ slightly according to map orientation.

From the surface

The surface counterpart is Turakamik Shrine, but the presence of a shrine directly above does not mean that the player can simply drop straight down at that point. Surface terrain, cliffs and underground cavern walls can prevent a direct descent.

Use Turakamik Shrine as a coordinate reference, then identify a suitable nearby chasm. If the player has already activated a different Depths Lightroot, fast travel is usually simpler than trying to find a direct surface-to-Depths route.

From Kimakarut to Jadukakar

Jadukakar Lightroot lies to the north-east or north-west relative to common map views, and it is another important target in the Gerudo Highlands Depths. The exact route is affected by the cavern’s cliffs and branch structures. Some players use a Zonai flying machine from Kimakarut as a shortcut, but this is a player-created traversal option rather than a special feature of the location.

From the Depths: A practical exploration route is

  1. 01
Fast travel to an already activated Lightroot in the Gerudo or western Depths.
  2. 02
Use the map to place a marker near approximately −2656, −2237.
  3. 03
Travel towards the marker while watching for vertical cliffs, deep gloom and large subterranean branches.
  4. 04
Prepare Brightbloom Seeds before leaving the previously lit area.
  5. 05
Approach the Lightroot from a safe angle rather than moving directly through the dark cavern.
  6. 06
Activate Kimakarut Lightroot as soon as it is reached.
  7. 07
Heal gloom damage and reassess the nearby Lynel before exploring further.

Functions and rewards

Lightroots also help with gloom management indirectly by making hazardous terrain easier to see. They do not function as shops, healing inns or Forge Constructs. No unique chest reward, named weapon, armour piece or quest reward is specifically documented as belonging to Kimakarut Lightroot.

The main permanent reward is therefore access and information, not an item pickup.

Enemies and hazards

Armoured Lynel

A major nearby threat is an Armoured Lynel west of the Lightroot, positioned behind a large branch-like structure. The enemy’s world-level variant may change as the game progresses, with reports describing possible Blue-Maned or Silver Lynel forms depending on progression and scaling.

This enemy is not part of the Lightroot’s activation requirement. Players can activate Kimakarut and leave without fighting it.

Because the Lightroot is a travel point, activating it before the fight is sensible even if the player plans to return later with better equipment.

Environmental hazards

The darkness itself is the main early hazard. Brightbloom Seeds, a Miner’s Armour set, glow food or an already illuminated route can all make the approach safer.

Spoiler notes and progressionSpoilers

Kimakarut Lightroot has no known story lock, regional quest requirement or missable activation state. It can be activated whenever the player reaches it. The nearby Lynel’s strength can change with world progression, so enemy details should be treated separately from the fixed Lightroot location.

There is no evidence that activating Kimakarut changes the story, starts a quest or alters Turakamik Shrine. Its progression effect is the normal one for a Lightroot: a brighter and more informative section of the Depths, plus a new fast-travel destination.
