Key takeaways

  • Kawatik Lightroot is in the Gerudo Highlands Depths, not the surface Gerudo Highlands or the Gerudo Desert Depths.
  • Its map position is approximately (-1531, -2929, -0752) Some guides give a slightly different elevation, such as -0731, so use the Lightroot marker and visible terrain rather than treating the final coordinate as exact.
  • Its surface counterpart is Kitawak Shrine, located on East Gerudo Mesa Like other Lightroots, the name is the reverse of its corresponding surface shrine’s name.
  • A south-western device cache contains ready-made hot-air balloons and a substantial selection of loose Zonai devices.
  • A Yiga Clan member disguised as a researcher is associated with the device-cache area. Treat apparently helpful researchers in the Depths with caution.
  • Kawatik is close to the route leading through the Gerudo Depths towards the South Lomei Depths Labyrinth, although the labyrinth is a separate location and is not part of Kawatik Lightroot itself.

About this guide

Scope: Base game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Name note: The location is canonically Kawatik Lightroot. “kawatiK Lightroot” appears to be a capitalisation or spelling variation. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses Depths exploration, Yiga Clan encounters, Zonai device caches and the Master Kohga questline.

Overview

Kawatik Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Gerudo Highlands Depths, positioned at the northern, relatively shallow end of a canyon descending towards Daval Canyon Mine and a nearby arena used for a later Colgera rematch. Activating it illuminates the surrounding Depths, reveals local map data and creates a fast-travel point.

The Lightroot itself is not a settlement, dungeon or mine complex. Its immediate area is best understood as a navigation landmark on the edge of a larger vertical canyon system. A particularly useful Zonai device cache lies to the south-west, while the Lightroot also functions as one of the stopping points along a statue-following route associated with the Yiga Clan and Master Kohga questline.

Location and boundaries

Kawatik Lightroot occupies a small point within the Gerudo Highlands Depths. The immediate area consists of the Lightroot platform and the surrounding cavern floor and cliff edges. It should not be expanded into the whole Gerudo Highlands Depths region, the nearby Daval Canyon Mine, or the South Lomei Depths Labyrinth.

The Lightroot stands near the shallow northern end of a canyon. The canyon drops away towards Daval Canyon Mine, and the wider area also contains an arena used for a Colgera rematch. These are connected landmarks in the same local Depths landscape, but they are separate named locations with their own encounters and purposes.

The terrain around Kawatik is more open than many cramped Depths passages, but it is still shaped by high walls and vertical changes in elevation. This makes the Lightroot useful as a reference point when deciding whether to continue along the canyon floor, climb towards the surrounding shelves, or use a balloon-based vehicle to gain height.

Included immediate subareas

The following are the named or functionally distinct elements verified as part of the immediate Kawatik area:

The following nearby places are not part of the Lightroot’s own boundaries:

Functions of the Lightroot

Activating Kawatik Lightroot has the standard Lightroot effects:

Lightroots are also useful for orientation because each corresponds to a surface Shrine of Light. Kawatik Lightroot corresponds to Kitawak Shrine, and its name follows the series-wide reverse-name pattern: Kawatik reversed is Kitawak.

Functions of the Lightroot: steps

  1. 01
    It illuminates the surrounding Depths.
  2. 02
It reveals the local section of the Depths map.
  3. 03
    It establishes a fast-travel destination.
  4. 04
It restores hearts damaged by Gloom when the relevant gloom damage is no longer blocking recovery.

How to reach Kawatik Lightroot

There is no single mandatory route. The best approach depends on which part of the Gerudo region you have already explored.

Surface-to-Depths approach

The practical method is to enter the Gerudo or Gerudo Highlands Depths through a suitable chasm, then use an already activated Lightroot as a launch point. Because Kawatik lies near a canyon and below a surface shrine, checking the Depths map against the position of Kitawak Shrine is often the most reliable way to narrow down its location.

If the area is still dark, prepare for navigation rather than trying to travel directly through unknown terrain. Bring:

The Lightroot’s approximate position is (-1531, -2929, -0752). Other guides list a similar horizontal position but a different elevation, including (-1531, -2928, -0731). This discrepancy is best treated as a coordinate-reporting difference rather than a second Lightroot.

Route from the Master Kohga statue trail

Kawatik Lightroot is also encountered during the extended Depths route involving statues that point towards Yiga-related objectives. After reaching the relevant earlier Lightroot and following the statues, the trail leads south-west to Kawatik. One guide gives the statue-route position as approximately (-1700, -3307, -0525), which appears to describe the route or approach area rather than the central Lightroot coordinate listed by location references.

From Kawatik, the statue trail continues towards the South Lomei Depths Labyrinth. The labyrinth is optional at this stage. You can activate Kawatik, establish the fast-travel point and return later rather than committing to the whole route immediately.

Zonai device cache

A device cache lies close to the Lightroot, to the south-west, beside the base of a tall cliff at the canyon’s edge. It is one of the more useful local resources because it offers both pre-assembled machines and loose components.

Verified inventory

The pre-assembled hot-air balloons are particularly useful for gaining height in the canyon. The loose balloon and basket allow you to build another lift platform, while rockets and fans can be combined into a short-range ascent or emergency escape vehicle. The cache does not by itself guarantee a complete, optimally powered aircraft, so bring your own Zonai Charges if you plan to travel beyond the immediate cliffs.

Suggested uses

For vertical scouting: Use a balloon, torch and basket to rise above the canyon. This is useful when the floor route is obstructed or when you want to identify nearby cliffs and openings.

For emergency traversal: Attach fans or rockets to a wing. A wing is more useful when you have enough battery and a clear launch surface, so avoid wasting it in a cramped corner.

For combat: Flame Emitters can be attached to shields or vehicles, while Time Bombs are better used with caution. Their blast can destroy your vehicle or throw Link into a hazardous drop.

For resource conservation: Activate the Lightroot first, then experiment. A failed machine is much less costly when Kawatik is already available as a travel point.

Yiga Clan encounter

The device-cache area is associated with a Yiga Clan member disguised as a “Researcher”. The disguise is part of the Yiga’s recurring tactic of presenting themselves as harmless or helpful figures in the Depths. The encounter should therefore be treated as a hostile ambush rather than as an ordinary researcher service.

No ordinary resident population, shop, settlement or permanent research outpost is verified at Kawatik Lightroot itself. The researcher disguise should not be interpreted as evidence that the location contains a functioning research station.

Practical response

  1. 01
Activate Kawatik Lightroot before approaching the cache.
  2. 02
Save or prepare a healing item if you are already carrying Gloom damage.
  3. 03
Approach from open ground so that a sudden fight does not push you over the canyon edge.
  4. 04
Keep the device cache available after the encounter. Its components remain useful for exploration even after the Yiga threat has been dealt with.

Nearby connections

Daval Canyon Mine

The canyon below Kawatik descends towards Daval Canyon Mine. The mine is a separate named location and should be explored as its own area. Kawatik is valuable as a return point before committing to the descent, especially if the route below is dark or contains Gloom.

Kawatik’s elevated position makes it a useful staging point for balloon travel and for checking the canyon’s vertical layout. It is not itself a mine entrance or a forge facility.

Colgera rematch arena

A nearby arena is used for a later Colgera rematch. The arena is not part of the Lightroot platform and does not turn Kawatik into a boss location. Treat it as a separate combat site that can be approached from the surrounding canyon system.

The exact route and encounter conditions belong to the Colgera rematch content rather than to Kawatik Lightroot’s own activities.

South Lomei Depths Labyrinth

The statue route from the Kawatik area continues towards South Lomei Depths Labyrinth. The labyrinth is a major neighbouring landmark, but it is not included within the Lightroot’s immediate boundary. It can be explored independently after activating Kawatik.

Walkthrough: a safe first visit

  1. 01
Reach the unlit area near the listed coordinates. Use Brightbloom Seeds and stay close to walls or visible terrain until the Lightroot’s glow becomes apparent.

Walkthrough: a safe first visit

  1. 01
Activate Kawatik Lightroot immediately. This reveals the map, establishes fast travel and gives you a safe recovery point.

Walkthrough: a safe first visit

  1. 01
Survey the canyon before descending. Look for the tall cliff, the south-western device cache and the route down towards Daval Canyon Mine.

Walkthrough: a safe first visit

  1. 01
Approach the device cache carefully. The disguised researcher may not be what they appear to be. Keep space around Link so a fight does not force you into a drop.

Walkthrough: a safe first visit

  1. 01
Collect or use the Zonai devices. The pre-assembled balloons are suitable for testing the local vertical space. Take loose devices if you intend to return to the area later.

Walkthrough: a safe first visit

  1. 01
Choose your next objective. Descend towards Daval Canyon Mine, follow the statue route towards South Lomei Depths Labyrinth, or use Kawatik as a fast-travel point for another expedition.

Walkthrough: a safe first visit

  1. 01
Return before exhausting resources. If your battery, arrows or Brightbloom Seeds are running low, there is little benefit in forcing a long journey through the canyon. Kawatik makes a convenient staging point for a better-equipped attempt.

Hazards and secrets

Gloom

As with other Depths locations, Gloom can block heart recovery and make careless exploration dangerous. The main risk around Kawatik is not a unique environmental mechanic but the combination of Gloom, darkness and vertical terrain. Keep healing food available and avoid treating the illuminated area as completely safe.

Vertical drops

The Lightroot lies near a canyon that falls towards the mine area. A poorly controlled paraglider descent or an explosion from a Time Bomb can send Link onto a lower ledge or into hostile territory. Activate the Lightroot before experimenting with vehicles.

False researchers

The disguised Yiga member is the area’s most notable surprise. The encounter reinforces a broader Depths rule: a researcher-like figure may be an ambush rather than a neutral NPC.

Balloon instability

Hot-air balloons are useful in the canyon, but they are not a guaranteed route to every ledge. Torches and Flame Emitters can provide lift, while fans and rockets alter the vehicle’s balance. Build over level ground and avoid attaching too many explosive devices to a machine you intend to stand on.

Lore and progression

Kawatik Lightroot has no separately documented local settlement history or unique resident community. Its importance comes from the way several Depths systems meet around it:

The Lightroot itself is not locked behind a quest. It can be activated during free exploration, before or after the associated Yiga content. The Master Kohga route may give the location greater narrative relevance, but it does not make Kawatik unavailable to players exploring independently.
