About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers the Depths, Lightroot mechanics and the relationship between Sasag Lightroot and its Surface shrine. It does not spoil major story revelations beyond the normal discovery of the Depths.

Overview

Sasag Lightroot is a small but useful landmark in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It lies in the Tabantha Frontier Depths, beneath the western part of Hyrule, and corresponds to Gasas Shrine on the Surface. Like other Lightroots, Sasag serves three practical purposes: it illuminates a portion of the Depths map, restores hearts damaged by Gloom while Link stands beneath its light, and becomes a permanent fast-travel point once activated.

Sasag is not a settlement, mine, dungeon or quest hub. Its immediate scope is limited to the Lightroot itself and the surrounding Depths terrain. Nearby regional locations, including the Rito Village Chasm and the abandoned mines farther north, belong to the wider Tabantha Frontier Depths rather than to Sasag Lightroot.

Overview and boundaries

Sasag Lightroot is a single Lightroot landmark rather than a broad named settlement. The location should therefore be distinguished from the wider Tabantha Frontier Depths, which contains several other Lightroots, abandoned mines and chasm connections. The regional directory includes Aduon Lightroot, Kataki Lightroot, Kawakarut Lightroot, Kawumoro Lightroot, Koro-nui Lightroot, Sikatag Lightroot and Yisuayam Lightroot, among others, but these are separate locations.

Not part of Sasag Lightroot

This distinction matters because the Depths map can make nearby locations appear to form one continuous area. They remain separate named places.

Geography and setting

Sasag Lightroot stands in the western Depths beneath the Tabantha Frontier. The surrounding underground environment is generally characterised by darkness, uneven rock formations and Gloom hazards typical of the Depths. Before activation, the local area is difficult to read visually and only appears as an unexplored section of the Depths map.

The Lightroot itself is the dominant landmark. It is not a built structure and does not contain a conventional interior, puzzle room or dungeon entrance. Its value comes from the area of visibility and map data it provides rather than from a unique treasure chest or scripted encounter.

Nearby named locations in the wider region

The following places are associated with the wider Tabantha Frontier Depths, not with Sasag Lightroot’s immediate boundaries:

The regional grouping is supported by the Tabantha Frontier Depths directory, but the sources do not provide enough evidence to assign all of these places to Sasag’s immediate vicinity. They should not be presented as subareas of Sasag Lightroot.

Relation to Gasas Shrine

Sasag Lightroot corresponds to Gasas Shrine on the Surface. This is part of a larger Depths navigation rule: Lightroots generally match the positions of Surface Shrines, and their names are usually anagrams or reversals of the shrine names. In this case:

The correspondence is useful when searching for the Lightroot. Open the map over Gasas Shrine, switch to the Depths layer and compare the position. The shrine itself does not provide a direct tunnel to Sasag Lightroot, and the two locations are not physically joined. Their relationship is positional rather than architectural.

How to reach Sasag Lightroot

The exact approach can vary depending on which chasms and Lightroots have already been discovered. The Surface-to-Depths comparison is the most reliable way to confirm that you are searching in the correct place.

Approaching from the Depths

If you already have another western Depths Lightroot active, Sasag can normally be reached by following the illuminated map and travelling across open underground terrain. The best route depends on your current map coverage, so there is no single mandatory path documented for the location.

Use a paraglider and Zonai devices carefully. A flying machine can shorten the journey, but an improvised vehicle may be more useful if the route crosses broad, uneven ground. Bring Brightbloom Seeds even if you intend to travel from another Lightroot, since the edges of the activated map can remain extremely dark.

Recommended method: use the Surface counterpart

  1. 01
Travel to Gasas Shrine on the Surface.
  2. 02
Open the map and switch from the Surface layer to the Depths.
  3. 03
Place a marker directly below the shrine’s position.
  4. 04
Search for a suitable chasm or previously explored underground route.
  5. 05
Travel through the Depths towards the marked position, using Brightbloom Seeds or another light source.
  6. 06
Activate Sasag Lightroot when you reach its base.

What activating Sasag Lightroot does

Illuminates the area

The surrounding Depths become visible, making cliffs, paths, bodies of Gloom and nearby terrain easier to read. The revealed area is added to the Depths map, much like a smaller underground equivalent of a Surface map-revealing landmark.

Unlocks fast travel

Once activated, Sasag Lightroot becomes a Travel Gate. Link can return to it from the map, making it useful as a staging point for further exploration of the Tabantha Frontier Depths.

Restores Gloom-damaged hearts

Standing beneath an active Lightroot restores hearts that have been disabled by Gloom. This does not replace normal healing items and does not make Link immune to further Gloom damage outside the Lightroot’s effect. It is particularly useful after crossing contaminated ground or fighting enemies in Gloom-heavy areas.

Contributes to the Lightroot completion reward

Sasag is one of the Lightroots required for full Depths completion. Activating every Lightroot awards the Dispelling Darkness Medal, a completion reward with no practical combat or exploration function beyond recording the achievement.

Enemies, items and activities

No unique enemy encounter, boss, treasure chest, quest objective or collectible has been reliably documented as belonging specifically to Sasag Lightroot.

This does not mean that the surrounding Depths are empty. Ordinary Depths content can appear in the wider area, including:

However, these should be treated as ordinary regional content unless a specific map or in-game source places an item directly at Sasag Lightroot. Random enemy groups and resource deposits should not be described as fixed Sasag-exclusive content.

Hazards and preparation

The principal danger is the ordinary hazard profile of the Depths rather than a special trap at Sasag itself.

Gloom

Gloom can disable hearts and make long journeys dangerous. Carry meals or elixirs that restore Gloom-damaged hearts, and use the Lightroot as a recovery point when possible.

Darkness

The area may be completely unlit before activation. Brightbloom Seeds, Giant Brightbloom Seeds, arrows and thrown materials are useful for revealing the route ahead.

Vertical terrain

Depths routes often contain steep cliffs, overhangs and gaps. Keep stamina available for climbing and gliding. A paraglider is especially important if you are approaching from a chasm rather than fast-travelling from another Lightroot.

Enemy encounters

Enemies in the wider Depths may be strengthened by the underground environment and may occupy Gloom-covered ground. There is no evidence of a Sasag-specific boss or scripted battle, so prepare for normal exploration rather than a set-piece encounter.

Suggested exploration route

For a first visit, the following route is practical:

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Activate Gasas Shrine if it has not already been completed.
  2. 02
Use the Surface map to mark the matching position in the Depths.
  3. 03
Enter through a nearby accessible chasm.
  4. 04
Light the route with Brightbloom Seeds rather than rushing through darkness.
  5. 05
Avoid unnecessary Gloom patches until you have identified the Lightroot’s glow.
  6. 06
    Activate Sasag Lightroot.
  7. 07
Stand beneath it until any recoverable Gloom damage has been cleared.
  8. 08
Use the newly revealed map to identify the next western Lightroot or regional landmark.
  9. 09
Fast-travel back to the Surface if your supplies are low.

Lore and naming

Sasag Lightroot has no individual story scene or known historical account. Its lore significance comes from the wider Lightroot system. Lightroots are living underground structures that provide illumination in a realm where Surface light cannot reach. Their placement mirrors most Surface Shrines, creating a deliberate navigational relationship between Hyrule’s layers.

The name Sasag is the reversed form of Gasas, matching the naming convention described for Lightroots and their Surface shrine counterparts. This makes the pair easy to identify once the pattern is understood.
