About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers the Depths, the Kataki Lightroot, its surface counterpart and the associated Ikatak Shrine quest. It does not cover unrelated areas of the Tabantha Frontier or the wider Hebra Depths.
Overview
Kataki Lightroot is a Lightroot in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, located in the Tabantha Frontier Depths. It sits directly beneath Ikatak Shrine, which is found on the surface at the edge of Gisa Crater. Activating Kataki Lightroot illuminates the surrounding Depths, restores Link’s hearts, removes accumulated Gloom damage and creates a permanent fast-travel point. Its map coordinates are approximately (-3952, 1140, -572).
Kataki Lightroot is a small, self-contained location rather than a settlement, dungeon or large underground complex. There are no documented shops, named residents, quests or unique facilities at the Lightroot itself. Its importance comes from its position beneath Ikatak Shrine and from the exploration value of revealing this section of the Tabantha Frontier Depths.
Location and boundaries
Kataki Lightroot belongs to the Tabantha Frontier Depths. This is the underground region beneath the western part of Hyrule’s Tabantha Frontier, rather than the broader Hebra region as a whole. Zelda Dungeon’s location data places Kataki Lightroot in the Tabantha Frontier Depths and gives its coordinates as (-3952, 1140, -0572). Zelda Wiki likewise classifies it under the Tabantha Frontier Depths.
The Lightroot should be treated as a single location with a small immediate activation area. It does not include the following neighbouring or associated places:
The nearby locations are useful for navigation, but they are not subareas of Kataki Lightroot.
Included area
No separately named cave, mine, ruin, settlement or underground facility is recorded as part of the Lightroot itself.
Excluded but closely connected areas
| Place | Layer | Relationship to Kataki Lightroot |
|---|---|---|
| Ikatak Shrine | Surface | Direct counterpart above Kataki Lightroot |
| Gisa Crater | Surface | Location of the surface shrine and its quest |
| Gisa Crater Cave | Surface cave | Contains the crystal used to unlock Ikatak Shrine |
| Tabantha Frontier Depths | Depths | The wider regional area containing Kataki Lightroot |
| Other Tabantha Frontier Lightroots | Depths | Separate locations, not branches of Kataki |
The Lightroot’s functions
Kataki Lightroot performs the standard functions associated with Lightroots.
Illuminating the Depths
When activated, the Lightroot releases light across the surrounding underground area. The previously obscured map becomes visible, allowing you to identify terrain, cliffs, water and routes that were hidden by the Depths’ darkness. Lightroots also make the surrounding area easier to explore by reducing the visual obstruction caused by the underground gloom.
Kataki is therefore particularly useful if you are travelling through the western Tabantha Depths without having previously mapped the region.
Removing Gloom damage
Activating the Lightroot restores Link’s hearts and repairs hearts damaged by Gloom. This is not the same as a normal healing item in practical terms: it also restores hearts that have been locked by Gloom exposure.
The effect is useful when approaching the Lightroot through dark passages or across Gloom-covered ground. If you are low on health, reaching Kataki can serve as both a navigation objective and a safe recovery point.
Fast travel
Once activated, Kataki Lightroot becomes a Travel Point. You can then return to it from the map, provided normal fast-travel rules are available.
Map relationship with Ikatak Shrine
Kataki Lightroot corresponds to Ikatak Shrine on the surface. The pair uses the familiar reversed-name pattern found throughout the game:
The direct relationship between the two locations is more than a naming curiosity. If you have discovered the surface shrine but not its underground counterpart, switching between the Surface and Depths map layers can help you estimate Kataki’s position. Conversely, if Kataki Lightroot is already marked but Ikatak Shrine is missing from the surface map, look directly above it around Gisa Crater.
Map relationship with Ikatak Shrine
Coordinates and orientation
The exact displayed value can vary slightly depending on where Link is standing, but the X and Y values identify the same vertical relationship. The Z value differs because the shrine is on the surface and the Lightroot is deep underground.
The important practical point is that Kataki Lightroot is almost directly below Ikatak Shrine. If you are using the surface shrine as a map reference, do not search for Kataki at the same elevation or inside the cave associated with the shrine quest.
The commonly listed coordinates are
| Location | Coordinates |
|---|---|
| Kataki Lightroot | (-3952, 1140, -572) |
| Ikatak Shrine | Approximately (-3951, 1139, 125) |
Getting to Kataki Lightroot
There is no special unlock condition for the Lightroot. You can activate it whenever you reach it in the Depths. You do not need to complete a regional phenomenon, defeat a boss or finish the Ikatak Shrine quest first.
General route
The route from a chasm is not necessarily a straight line. Surface geography does not always translate into an unobstructed underground path, and the Depths often contain steep walls, isolated caverns and large gaps. If the Lightroot appears to be directly above you but cannot be reached at ground level, check for a lower passage, a climbable wall or an Ascend route.
Recommended preparation
You do not need a special item to activate Kataki Lightroot.
Using the surface shrine as a navigation aid
If you have already found Ikatak Shrine, place a marker on it or use its map position as a reference. Move to the Depths map and check the corresponding location. The two locations are vertically aligned closely enough to provide a useful search point.
This method is especially effective when the underground map is still mostly dark. The surface map gives you a known landmark even before Kataki has been activated.
General route
- 01Enter the Depths through a suitable chasm in or near the western Hyrule and Tabantha area.
- 02Open the Depths map and identify the approximate position beneath Ikatak Shrine.
- 03Use Brightbloom Seeds, thrown or attached to arrows, to reveal the route.
- 04Travel towards the Lightroot while watching for cliffs, pools, Gloom and underground enemies.
- 05Approach the glowing root and examine it.
- 06Use the newly revealed map and fast-travel point to plan the next stage of your journey.
Relationship with Ikatak Shrine
Ikatak Shrine is a Rauru’s Blessing shrine on the surface. Its main challenge is not inside the shrine. Instead, Link must complete The Gisa Crater Crystal, a Shrine Quest connected with the nearby crater and cave. Zelda Wiki identifies Ikatak Shrine as the surface counterpart of Kataki Lightroot, while several walkthroughs document the crystal quest and its rewards.
It is important to separate the two locations:
The Gisa Crater Crystal
The Gisa Crater Crystal is associated with Ikatak Shrine rather than Kataki Lightroot. It is included here because it is the most important nearby activity and because players often confuse the surface shrine, its cave and the underground Lightroot.
When Link examines Ikatak Shrine before the quest is complete, the crystal quest begins. The crystal is found in Gisa Crater Cave. Walkthrough sources describe enemies in the cave including Bone Bokoblins and Ice Likes, with fire-based attacks being useful against the latter. The crystal must then be attached to a rocket-powered construction and sent through the opening towards the surface. Link can use Ascend to leave the cave and continue moving the crystal to the shrine.
Quest walkthrough
The shrine itself is a Rauru’s Blessing shrine, so there is no conventional internal puzzle after the quest is complete. Reported rewards include a Light of Blessing and a Big Battery.
Cave collectibles
Gisa Crater Cave contains a Bubbulfrog and ore, according to walkthrough coverage of the shrine quest. These belong to the cave, not to Kataki Lightroot. If you are completing the area thoroughly, check the upper parts of the cave before leaving, since the Bubbulfrog can be easy to overlook.
Quest walkthrough
- 01Travel to Ikatak Shrine at the edge of Gisa Crater.
- 02Examine the shrine to begin The Gisa Crater Crystal.
- 03Follow the crystal’s beam into Gisa Crater Cave.
- 04Deal with the Bone Bokoblins and Ice Likes in the cave.
- 05Attach the available rockets to the crystal.
- 06Position the crystal so that the rockets send it through the opening above.
- 07Use Ascend to return to the surface.
- 08Retrieve the crystal and carry it to Ikatak Shrine.
- 09Enter the completed shrine and collect the shrine rewards.
Enemies and hazards
No enemy encounter is specifically documented as being stationed on the Kataki Lightroot platform itself. The approach through the Depths can nevertheless involve the usual underground dangers:
The enemies specifically associated with the nearby surface quest are separate from the Lightroot:
Do not treat those enemies as a permanent Kataki Lightroot encounter. Their relevance is to the route to Ikatak Shrine’s crystal, not to the Lightroot platform.
Items, chests and rewards
At Kataki Lightroot
No unique treasure chest, armour piece, named weapon or quest reward is verified as belonging to Kataki Lightroot itself. Its rewards are functional:
At Ikatak Shrine
The shrine’s reward is separate from Kataki Lightroot. Sources identify Ikatak as a Rauru’s Blessing shrine with a Big Battery chest and a Light of Blessing.
At Gisa Crater Cave
The cave associated with the shrine quest contains:
These are not Lightroot rewards and should be recorded separately when compiling a completion checklist.
Named directory
Nearby Tabantha Frontier Depths locations
These are separate locations within the same broader regional category, not subareas of Kataki Lightroot:
Zelda Wiki’s Tabantha Frontier Depths directory lists the Lightroots, mines and other regional locations separately, which supports keeping them outside Kataki Lightroot’s immediate boundaries.

Suggested exploration route
Route A: Surface-first
This is the clearest route if you have not yet found either location.
This route separates the shrine quest from the Lightroot while using the shrine as a reliable vertical reference.
Route B: Depths-first
Use this if you are mapping the underground world before exploring the surface.
This is more efficient for map completion, but it may leave the surface quest unresolved until later.
Route A: Surface-first
- 01Explore the Tabantha Frontier until you reach the area around Gisa Crater.
- 02Locate Ikatak Shrine.
- 03Complete or begin The Gisa Crater Crystal.
- 04Mark the shrine’s position on the map.
- 05Enter the Depths through a nearby chasm.
- 06Switch to the Depths map and travel towards the corresponding underground position.
- 07Activate Kataki Lightroot.
- 08Use the revealed map to identify further routes and nearby Lightroots.
Route B: Depths-first
- 01Enter the Depths from a western or north-western chasm.
- 02Illuminate the route with Brightbloom Seeds.
- 03Travel towards the location beneath Gisa Crater.
- 04Activate Kataki Lightroot as soon as you find it.
- 05Fast-travel back to Kataki later if the route becomes difficult.
- 06Visit the surface counterpart when you are ready to complete the shrine quest.
Completion checklist
Use the following checklist to avoid mixing the Lightroot with the associated surface content.
Note
Ikatak → Kataki
Lore and naming
Kataki Lightroot follows one of the most useful naming conventions in Tears of the Kingdom. Lightroots generally correspond to surface Shrines of Light, with the Lightroot’s name formed by reversing the shrine name. Here the relationship is especially easy to see:
This naming pattern gives the player an indirect method of matching surface and Depths locations. It also reinforces the game’s design idea that the two map layers are connected rather than being entirely separate worlds.
There is no separate story scene or character dialogue attached specifically to Kataki Lightroot. Its lore value is environmental and structural: like other Lightroots, it is part of the underground network that makes exploration of the Depths possible.
