Key takeaways
- Kawakarut Lightroot is in the Tabantha Frontier Depths, not in the Gerudo Desert Depths.
- Its approximate coordinates are (-3487, -0215, -0536), although map guides may differ by a few coordinate units depending on the recorded activation position.
- It corresponds to Turakawak Shrine on the surface, at Lake Illumeni.
- A nearby Yiga Clan base lies east of the Lightroot and contains the Instant Scaffold Yiga Schematic.
- The base is a separate location from Kawakarut Lightroot Activating the Lightroot does not automatically complete the base encounter or award the schematic.
- The Lightroot is primarily a navigation and fast-travel facility No unique shop, named resident or dedicated mission is documented at the Lightroot itself.
Note
Base game guide. This page covers Kawakarut Lightroot and the immediately associated Depths site, rather than treating the wider Tabantha Frontier Depths as though it were part of the Lightroot itself. The name is sometimes mistyped as “kawakaruT”, but the in-game location is Kawakarut Lightroot.
Overview
Kawakarut Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Tabantha Frontier Depths, in the western Depths beneath the area around Lake Illumeni. Activating it illuminates the surrounding underground map, restores the normal maximum-heart effect caused by nearby Gloom, and unlocks a permanent Travel Point.
Its most useful nearby feature is a Yiga Clan Depths base immediately to the east. That base contains the Yiga Schematic for Instant Scaffold, making Kawakarut Lightroot a convenient waypoint for players collecting Autobuild designs. The Lightroot itself is not a dungeon, settlement or quest hub. Its importance comes from navigation, fast travel and its position beside the Yiga base.
Kawakarut also has a surface counterpart: Turakawak Shrine, located at Lake Illumeni. As with other Lightroots, the relationship is deliberately signposted by the reversed name pattern: Turakawak becomes Kawakarut when read backwards.
Overview and boundaries
Kawakarut Lightroot is a single Lightroot facility within the western Tabantha Frontier section of the Depths. It should not be confused with the neighbouring Lightroots and underground regions reached by travelling south or east.
The Lightroot stands on the edge of a broad underground slope that descends towards the Gerudo Highlands Depths. This makes the site useful as a regional transition point, but the Lightroot itself is classified with the Tabantha Frontier Depths. The nearby Yiga base is a separate subarea, even though it is close enough to form a natural combined exploration route.
On the surface, the corresponding location is Turakawak Shrine beside Lake Illumeni, south of Tanagar Canyon and near the meeting area of the Tabantha, Gerudo and Hebra regions. The surface shrine and underground Lightroot are related landmarks, but they are not one continuous interior location.
Nearby but distinct regions and places
The wider Tabantha Frontier Depths contain additional Lightroots, mines, enemy camps and other landmarks. They are not automatically part of Kawakarut Lightroot’s location entry merely because they can be reached from it.

Geography and orientation
Kawakarut Lightroot is positioned in a dark, open section of the Depths rather than inside a mine or a narrow cave. Before activation, the surrounding terrain is difficult to read because the local landscape, cliffs and Gloom pools are concealed by darkness. Once activated, the Lightroot reveals the surrounding map and makes the nearby Yiga structures easier to identify.
The map relationship between Lightroots and Shrines is one of the most reliable ways to locate this site. If Turakawak Shrine is visible on the surface map, looking in the corresponding position on the Depths map identifies Kawakarut Lightroot. Lightroots generally occupy the underground counterparts of surface Shrines of Light, with their names reversed.
Reaching Kawakarut Lightroot
From the surface
The most natural surface reference point is Lake Illumeni and Turakawak Shrine. However, the shrine area is not itself a straightforward chasm entrance. Players normally reach the Depths through a suitable nearby chasm, then travel underground towards the Lightroot using the revealed map, Brightbloom Seeds and visible Lightroot glow.
Because the Depths do not always provide a direct vertical route beneath every surface landmark, do not assume that dropping into the nearest visible hole will place Link directly below the shrine. The surface shrine is best used as a map reference.
From an existing Depths Travel Point
If another western Depths Lightroot is already active, travelling towards Kawakarut is usually safer than entering an unlit area from a distant chasm. The Lightroot’s glow can be seen from a considerable distance once Link is in the general area, although cliffs and underground ridges can hide it.
The exact approach varies depending on which chasms and Lightroots have already been discovered. The fixed feature is the Lightroot’s position and its relationship to Turakawak Shrine, not one compulsory route.
From an existing Depths Travel Point: A practical route is
- 01Travel to the nearest active Lightroot in the western Tabantha or adjoining Depths.
- 02Mark Kawakarut’s approximate position at about (-3487, -0215, -0536).
- 03Follow the terrain rather than attempting a straight-line route through high walls.
- 04Fire Brightbloom Seeds ahead of Link when the ground becomes difficult to read.
- 05Avoid unnecessary Gloom pools while approaching the Lightroot.
- 06Activate Kawakarut as soon as it is reached.
- 07Use the newly revealed map to identify the Yiga base immediately to the east.
Activating the Lightroot
Standing in a Lightroot’s light also removes the normal maximum-heart restriction caused by Gloom while Link remains within the illuminated area. This is useful after crossing Gloom-covered ground, but it does not replace Sundelion meals or other methods of recovering hearts that have already been damaged by Gloom.
Kawakarut uses the standard Lightroot interaction
- 01Approach the glowing root.
- 02Interact with its central activation point.
- 03Wait for the illumination effect to complete.
- 04Confirm the newly revealed section of the Depths map.
- 05Use the Lightroot as a Travel Point whenever required.
The nearby Yiga Clan base
The most significant associated feature is the Yiga Clan base east of Kawakarut Lightroot. Some guides describe it as a hideout or relay-style base. It is not part of the Lightroot structure itself and should be treated as a separate combat and schematic-reward location.
The base contains a chest associated with the Yiga Schematic for Instant Scaffold. The schematic allows Autobuild to create a scaffold-like structure that can help Link climb or reach higher ledges. The design uses five square stone slabs and a stake, and constructing it without available parts costs 18 Zonaite according to the cited schematic reference.
The base has a vertical layout. The schematic chest is placed high on the structure, while a Yiga member patrols nearby using a flying machine. Reaching the chest normally involves combining the base’s scaffolding with Ultrahand, using Ascend where possible, or using a shield-mounted Rocket or another improvised aerial solution. A guide to the Yiga schematic describes the chest hut as being on top of a tall cliff, with the patrolling Yiga member circling it in a flying machine.
Recommended order
The base’s reward is fixed content. It is not a random drop, and activating the Lightroot does not cause the schematic to appear automatically. The schematic must be collected from the associated Yiga base.
Recommended order: For most players, the efficient order is
- 01Activate Kawakarut Lightroot first.
- 02Let the new light expose the base’s layout.
- 03Observe the flying Yiga member before starting the climb.
- 04Defeat the Yiga member or avoid the patrol long enough to reach the chest.
- 05Use Ultrahand to reposition the available scaffold pieces.
- 06Climb or Ascend to the upper platform.
- 07Open the chest and collect the Instant Scaffold schematic.
- 08Fast-travel back to Kawakarut if the fight leaves Link low on health or resources.
Enemies and hazards
Gloom
Gloom is the principal environmental hazard around Kawakarut Lightroot. It can reduce Link’s maximum hearts when he stands on it, making an otherwise manageable fight much more dangerous. Use Brightbloom Seeds to identify safe ground and avoid crossing wide Gloom patches simply to save a few seconds.
The Lightroot’s illumination helps restore the normal heart capacity while Link is standing within its light, but the safest approach is still to minimise contact with Gloom. Carrying Sundelion-based meals is advisable when exploring the surrounding Depths for the first time.
Yiga Clan combat
The nearby base is guarded by Yiga Clan members. The flying patrol is particularly troublesome because it can attack from above while Link is trying to build a route to the schematic chest.
The available evidence confirms the Yiga presence and the flying-machine patrol associated with the schematic chest. It does not establish a fixed complete enemy roster for every surrounding patch of terrain, so random Depths encounters should not be treated as permanent named inhabitants of Kawakarut.
Items, rewards and facilities
Fixed rewards and functions
There is no verified evidence of a shop, Forge, Bargainer Statue, named NPC residence, stable, treasure cave or unique service directly at Kawakarut Lightroot. The Yiga base is a mission-like reward site rather than a business or public facility.
Fixed rewards and functions
| Item or function | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Map data for the surrounding Depths | Kawakarut Lightroot | Granted when the Lightroot is activated |
| Travel Point | Kawakarut Lightroot | Remains available after activation |
| Gloom relief within the light | Kawakarut Lightroot | Applies while Link is within the illuminated area |
| Instant Scaffold Yiga Schematic | Nearby Yiga Clan base | Requires reaching the base’s chest |
| Zonaite and ordinary materials | Nearby Depths terrain or enemy encounters | Not treated as a fixed Kawakarut reward |
Surface counterpart: Turakawak Shrine
Turakawak Shrine is the surface counterpart to Kawakarut Lightroot. It stands at Lake Illumeni in the Tabantha Frontier, south of Tanagar Canyon. The shrine’s puzzle is called Stacking a Path and centres on moving and combining climbable blocks to create a route upwards. Its treasure includes a Magic Rod, and completing the shrine awards a Light of Blessing.
The shrine is surrounded by water and thorns, so reaching it from ground level can be awkward. One practical method is to glide from a nearby cliffside rather than attempting to force a path directly through the thorn barrier.
It is important to separate the shrine’s reward from the Lightroot’s reward:
These are three related but distinct pieces of content.
Surface counterpart: Turakawak Shrine
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Turakawak Shrine | Magic Rod chest and Light of Blessing. |
| Kawakarut Lightroot | map illumination, Gloom relief and fast travel. |
| Nearby Yiga base | Instant Scaffold schematic. |
Suggested exploration route
For a first visit, the following route keeps the location’s major content together without expanding the scope into the whole region:
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Locate Turakawak Shrine on the surface map or identify Kawakarut’s approximate position from an active western Lightroot.
- 02Enter the Depths through a suitable nearby chasm.
- 03Travel towards (-3487, -0215, -0536), using Brightbloom Seeds when necessary.
- 04Activate Kawakarut Lightroot.
- 05Pause under the Lightroot to recover from Gloom exposure.
- 06Turn east and locate the Yiga base.
- 07Scout the flying patrol and the upper chest area.
- 08Defeat or bypass the Yiga guard.
- 09Build a route using the base’s scaffold pieces, Ultrahand and Ascend.
- 10Collect the Instant Scaffold schematic.
- 11Return to Kawakarut Lightroot and fast-travel out, or continue south towards the adjoining Depths.

Before leaving the area, check that you have:
Lore and naming
Kawakarut’s name is the reversed form of Turakawak, matching the broader Tears of the Kingdom convention linking surface Shrines of Light and underground Lightroots. The arrangement gives players a useful navigation clue: identifying an unvisited surface shrine can help locate its corresponding underground Lightroot, and vice versa.
The Lightroot itself does not have a separate story scene or named character associated with it. Its narrative significance is mainly structural: it represents the hidden underground geography beneath a known surface landmark and helps Link reclaim the Depths from darkness.
