Key takeaways
- The regional main quest is centred on Gerudo Town and Riju, but the story takes Link across the wider desert to the Lightning Temple.
- The desert has two contrasting progression states Before the regional quest is completed, a sandstorm disrupts visibility and Gibdos appear throughout the affected areas. After Queen Gibdo is defeated, the storm clears and Gerudo Town returns to normal.
- Heat resistance is important by day, while desert nights can require cold resistance. Cooling food, elixirs and the Desert Voe equipment are the most practical early solutions.
- Kara Kara Bazaar is the main approach point from the north Mayatat Shrine provides a convenient fast-travel point near the bazaar, while Gerudo Town’s shrines serve as the principal base for the southern desert.
- Molduga are the region’s major overworld minibosses Bomb Flowers, time bombs or other throwable objects can lure them from the sand, allowing Link to attack while they are stunned.
- Gerudo Desert connects to a large Depths area containing the Abandoned Gerudo Mine and Desert Coliseum, but that underground region is a separate map area rather than an ordinary subarea of the surface desert.

Overview
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, base game
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, base game
Introduction
Gerudo Desert is the broad south-western surface region of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is much more than the area immediately surrounding Gerudo Town. The region includes the desert proper, Kara Kara Bazaar, Gerudo Town and its shelter, the North and East Gerudo Ruins, the Gerudo Great Skeleton, several caves and ancient structures, the Lightning Temple, and the western and southern ruins scattered through the sand.
This guide uses Gerudo Desert as the surface-region boundary shown by the game’s map and regional location guides. It does not treat Gerudo Highlands, Gerudo Canyon, the Gerudo Sky Archipelago or the Gerudo Desert Depths as part of the same area, although those neighbouring regions and underground connections are mentioned where they are useful. Gerudo Desert location lists include places such as Ancient Altar Ruins, Ancient Prison Ruins, Central Gerudo Cave, Gerudo Sanctuary, Kara Kara Bazaar, the Lightning Temple, North Gerudo Ruins and Valley of Silent Statues.
Boundary and neighbouring regions
The following places are adjacent or related, but should not be merged into the Gerudo Desert directory:
This separation matters because shrine lists, caves, chasms, enemy encounters and quest objectives can otherwise be attributed to the wrong region.
---
Boundary and neighbouring regions
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Gerudo Canyon | the northern approach, including Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower and Gerudo Canyon Stable. |
| Gerudo Highlands | the highland region north of the desert, including the Statue of the Eighth Heroine area and several high-altitude caves. |
| Gerudo Desert Depths | the underground map below the desert, including the Abandoned Gerudo Mine and Desert Coliseum. |
| Gerudo Sky Archipelago | floating islands above the region. |
| South Lomei Labyrinth | associated geographically with the Gerudo side of Hyrule, but treated as a separate labyrinth location rather than a normal desert settlement or subarea. |
Northern approach
The northern approach runs from Gerudo Canyon towards Kara Kara Bazaar. It is the safest route for a first visit because it follows recognisable paths and brings Link to a settlement with cooking facilities, merchants and a shrine.
The route is still exposed to heat during the day. Players without heat resistance should travel at night, use cooling food or prepare an elixir before leaving the canyon.
Kara Kara Bazaar
Kara Kara Bazaar is an oasis settlement north-east of Gerudo Town. It is the natural first base for the region and contains a shrine, merchants, travellers and useful supplies. The bazaar remains accessible during the regional crisis, although the wider desert becomes much more dangerous.
Named directory: Kara Kara Bazaar
The bazaar’s businesses should not be confused with Gerudo Town’s specialist shops. Some stalls are ordinary market scenery, while others have practical purchasing or service functions.
Named directory: Kara Kara Bazaar
Gerudo Town
Gerudo Town is the principal settlement of the region and the centre of the Gerudo storyline. It is enclosed by high walls and contains the Gerudo palace, shelter, training facilities, shops, accommodation and numerous resident NPCs.
At the beginning of the regional crisis, many Gerudo are living in the Gerudo Shelter, an underground refuge beneath the town. The surface town is not operating normally, and the sandstorm and Gibdo attacks have affected the settlement’s daily life. Progressing through Riju of Gerudo Town eventually restores the town’s normal state.
Gerudo Town is also where Link can obtain or purchase several important pieces of equipment, begin side quests and access the Gerudo Secret Club.
Important services
The exact availability of some services changes with story progress. During the crisis, the town’s population and businesses are displaced into the shelter. After the Lightning Temple storyline, the surface becomes active again.
Named directory: Gerudo Town
Important services
| Service | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armour and clothing | Gerudo Town | Includes the Desert Voe set and other Gerudo-related equipment |
| Gerudo Secret Club | Gerudo Town, hidden entrance | Accessed through the underground passage network rather than the obvious front door |
| Sand-seal rental | Gerudo Town and Kara Kara Bazaar | Useful for crossing open sand |
| Shrine fast travel | Soryotanog Shrine | Located within the town |
| Main quest hub | Gerudo Town and shelter | Riju’s regional quest begins and develops here |
| Training | Gerudo Town and Southern Oasis Training Area | Includes combat and sand-seal-related activity |
The central desert
The central desert contains the widest open expanses of sand and the greatest concentration of exposed ruins. This is the area where players are most likely to encounter Molduga, travelling enemies, buried treasure and Korok puzzles.
The sandstorm makes the central desert difficult to cross early in the regional quest. Once the storm is gone, it becomes a much more manageable exploration area, although Molduga and other enemies remain.
Southern desert and the Lightning Temple
The southern desert contains the route towards the Lightning Temple and several large ancient structures. During the regional quest, Riju’s lightning ability is used to activate or destroy targets and to weaken Gibdos.
The Lightning Temple is a distinct dungeon location rather than merely a building within Gerudo Town. Its floors are listed separately by the game’s map data and guides, including B1 and floors 1F through 7F.

Route from Lookout Landing
This is the most straightforward route for a first visit.
Route from Lookout Landing: steps
- 01Travel south-west through Hyrule Field towards Gerudo Canyon.
- 02Activate Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower if it has not already been used.
- 03Follow the canyon route towards Kara Kara Bazaar.
- 04Activate Mayatat Shrine.
- 05Prepare cooling food or elixirs before crossing towards Gerudo Town.
- 06Continue south-west, using the road, sand seals or constructed vehicles.
- 07Enter Gerudo Town and begin Riju of Gerudo Town.
Route during the sandstorm
The sandstorm interferes with the map and makes the desert’s surface landmarks difficult to identify. The most reliable story route is:
Riju’s lightning field is particularly useful against Gibdos because ordinary physical attacks are ineffective until the monsters are exposed to an elemental effect.
Route during the sandstorm: steps
- 01Enter Gerudo Town and speak with the relevant residents in the shelter.
- 02Leave the town and travel towards the northern ruins.
- 03Locate Riju training near the North Gerudo Ruins.
- 04Complete the lightning-target practice.
- 05Return to Kara Kara Bazaar or proceed with Riju towards the storm-affected desert.
- 06Follow the objective markers and visible tornadoes rather than attempting to navigate by the ordinary map.
- 07Reach the Lightning Temple and complete its power-and-light puzzles.
Exploration route after the regional quest
For a thorough surface sweep, use this order:
---
The main surface shrines listed for Gerudo Desert are:
Several shrine coordinates and trial names are recorded in regional shrine directories. Examples include Kudanisar Shrine’s “Bridging the Sands”, Soryotanog Shrine’s “Buried Light”, Mayatat Shrine’s “A Sliding Device”, Karahatag Shrine’s “Drifting Flame” and Siwakama Shrine’s “Moving the Spheres”.
Some are inside caves or require a puzzle, so reaching the map location does not always mean the shrine entrance is immediately visible.
---
Exploration route after the regional quest: steps
- 01Kara Kara Bazaar: Mayatat Shrine, well, merchants and oasis.
- 02Gerudo Town: Soryotanog Shrine, shops, Secret Club and side quests.
- 03North Gerudo Ruins: shrine and story-related locations.
- 04Central desert: Molduga hunts, ruins, Korok puzzles and caves.
- 05East Gerudo Ruins: cave and surface ruins.
- 06Gerudo Great Skeleton and Dragon’s Exile: southern shrine and large landmark.
- 07West and South Gerudo caves: Bubbulfrogs, chests and underground passages.
- 08Ancient Prison Ruins and Valley of Silent Statues: exploration and treasure.
- 09Lightning Temple area: revisit after the story if collecting missed chests and materials.
- 10Chasms and Depths entrances: treat these as the beginning of the separate Gerudo Desert Depths route.
Exploration route after the regional quest
| Shrine | Main use |
|---|---|
| Mayatat Shrine | Kara Kara Bazaar access |
| Soryotanog Shrine | Gerudo Town fast travel |
| Kudanisar Shrine | Northern desert traversal |
| Miryotanog Shrine | Western desert access |
| Irasak Shrine | Southern landmark and skeleton access |
| Karahatag Shrine | Southern ruins and temple route |
| Chichim Shrine | Deep-southern desert access |
| Siwakama Shrine | South-eastern desert exploration |
Gerudo leadership
Riju is central to the regional quest. After Queen Gibdo is defeated, Link receives the Vow of Riju, giving access to her lightning ability as a Sage power.
Gerudo leadership
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Riju | chief of Gerudo Town and the Sage of Lightning. |
| Buliara | Riju’s bodyguard and a senior Gerudo authority. |
| Patricia | Riju’s sand seal, associated with the Gerudo palace and unusual fortune-telling interactions. |
Other named residents and visitors
The desert’s named cast includes residents of Gerudo Town, travellers at Kara Kara Bazaar, merchants, guards, children and characters connected with side quests. Important examples include:
This directory should be read as a named-character index rather than a claim that every unnamed guard or shopkeeper is listed. The regional quest and side-quest lists identify activities such as The Heroines’ Secret, Piaffe, Packed Away, The Missing Owner, Pride of the Gerudo, The Mysterious Eighth and Dalia’s Game.
Other named residents and visitors
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Dalia | begins Dalia’s Game in Gerudo Town. |
| Cara | involved in the Gerudo Secret Club’s clothing-related activity. |
| Isha | associated with Gerudo Town’s jewellery business. |
| Kalani | connected with the Gerudo town and palace events. |
| Piaffe | involved in Piaffe, Packed Away. |
| Calisa | associated with Gerudo Town’s security and social rules. |
| Pokki and Frelly | connected with ruin-related activity. |
| Manny | a Gerudo Town child associated with the town’s minor activities. |
| Riju’s guards and soldiers | present in the town, shelter and training areas. |
| Kara Kara Bazaar merchants and travellers | visitors rather than Gerudo Town residents. |
Factions
Men are generally barred from Gerudo Town, but Link is allowed to enter under the game’s story-specific exception. Clothing and disguise mechanics are part of the town’s presentation, but they should not be confused with a permanent universal access rule.
---
Factions
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Gerudo Town authorities | guards, palace officials and Riju’s military force. |
| The Gerudo people | the principal inhabitants of the region. |
| Yiga Clan | associated with the wider Gerudo area and the Depths, but their main hideout is not within the ordinary surface Gerudo Desert boundary. |
| Monsters | Gibdos, Molduga, Lizalfos, Bokoblins, Moblins, Horriblins and other enemies occupy ruins, caves and roads. |
Gerudo Secret Club
The Gerudo Secret Club is a hidden shop in Gerudo Town. Its entrance is reached through the town’s underground passages, rather than by simply walking through the front door. It sells Gerudo-style clothing and equipment that cannot be obtained from the ordinary visible shop.
The club is especially important for players seeking heat-resistant clothing and Gerudo-themed equipment. It is also a notable example of a functional business hidden behind a mission-like discovery.
Jewellery shop
The jewellery shop in Gerudo Town sells accessories and participates in Gerudo-related side content. It is a functional business, not merely a decorative storefront.
Sand-seal rentals
Sand seals allow rapid travel across the open desert. They are most useful where roads are absent, although sandstorm conditions and enemy activity can make direct riding dangerous.
Shelter
The Gerudo Shelter is not just a decorative underground area. During the regional crisis it becomes the town’s living and administrative centre. It contains residents, quest conversations, routes and facilities that are normally found on the surface after the crisis is resolved.
---
Heat and cold
The Desert Voe set, cooling meals and chilly elixirs are the most practical solutions. Flamebreaker equipment does not protect against ordinary desert heat because it is designed for volcanic fire conditions, not ambient temperature.
The desert has a day-night temperature cycle
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Day | extreme heat can damage Link without heat resistance. |
| Night | the temperature drops and cold resistance may become useful. |
Sandstorm
Before the Lightning Temple is completed, the sandstorm:
After Queen Gibdo is defeated, the storm clears and the Gerudo return to the surface.
Quicksand
Quicksand appears around parts of the desert and in some caves and ruins. It slows or pulls down Link and can make ordinary walking ineffective. Use sand seals, climbing, Ascend, nearby solid ground or constructed platforms where possible.
Gibdos
Gibdos are the signature enemy of the Gerudo storyline. Their bodies are resistant to ordinary attacks until they are weakened by an elemental effect. Useful responses include:
Once weakened, Gibdos can be defeated normally. Their remains provide useful materials, particularly Gibdo Bones, although these have low durability when fused to weapons and are better used for powerful single-hit arrow fusions.
Molduga
Molduga move beneath the sand and respond to vibrations. A safe basic method is:
Molduga provide fins, guts and jaws, which are useful for upgrades, elixirs and fusions. The desert contains several separate Molduga encounters rather than one endlessly respawning regional battle.
Enemy directory
Enemy type and strength vary with story progression, world scaling and the exact location.
---
Molduga: steps
- 01Climb onto a ruin, rock or other solid elevation.
- 02Throw or fire a bomb-related object onto the sand.
- 03Wait for the Molduga to leap and consume it.
- 04Detonate the bomb as it is swallowed.
- 05Attack the stunned Molduga with a strong weapon.
- 06Return to high ground and repeat.
Enemy directory
Main quest: Riju of Gerudo Town
This is the regional phenomenon quest for Gerudo Desert. Its broad sequence is:
The Lightning Temple uses light, mirrors, vertical movement and sand-based hazards. Riju’s ability remains useful both in the approach and inside the dungeon.
Main quest: Riju of Gerudo Town: steps
- 01Reach Gerudo Town or the shelter.
- 02Investigate the Gibdo attacks.
- 03Find Riju at the North Gerudo Ruins.
- 04Complete her lightning training.
- 05Defend Gerudo Town.
- 06Travel through the storm-affected desert.
- 07Reach the Lightning Temple.
- 08Activate the temple’s power sources.
- 09Defeat Queen Gibdo.
- 10Receive Riju’s vow and clear the sandstorm.
Side quests and side adventures
Treasure of the Gerudo Desert rewards the Vah Naboris Divine Helm, while the broader Gerudo quest chain also explores the Seven Heroines and the mysterious eighth heroine. The side-quest directory identifies Riju as the giver of Treasure of the Gerudo Desert and Dalia as the giver of Dalia’s Game.
Useful activity checklist
---
The desert’s collectible content is spread across open sand, ruins, caves and settlement interiors. Important landmark directories include:
Verified Gerudo Desert activities include
Caves and underground entrances
Caves generally contain some combination of Bubbulfrogs, treasure chests, breakable rock, enemy encounters and routes to nearby ruins. Their layouts are fixed, but enemy occupancy and some materials may vary with world state.
Shrines
Korok Seeds and chests
Korok puzzles occur around ruined walls, rock formations, buried structures and isolated desert landmarks. Search especially around:
Metal chests and environmental objects may be buried or obscured by sand. Ultrahand is useful for revealing movable pieces, while the camera and map markers help prevent repeated searches.
---
Gerudo Desert is a recurring Zelda setting. In Tears of the Kingdom, it retains the Gerudo homeland, Gerudo Town and the desert’s association with ancient ruins, sand seals and severe environmental conditions. Its narrative role is expanded through the Lightning Temple and the history of the Seven Heroines.
The desert also connects present-day Gerudo society with the ancient past. The ruins, murals, temples and the mysterious eighth heroine are not simply background scenery. They provide the framework for several optional investigations and show how Gerudo history has been preserved, disputed or partially forgotten.
The Gerudo Desert is distinct from the Haunted Wasteland and Desert Colossus terminology associated with Ocarina of Time. Those are separate continuity-specific locations, even though later games reuse the broad idea of a Gerudo desert homeland. The recurring Gerudo Desert appears in several later Zelda titles, including Twilight Princess, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
---
Do not assume that completing the regional quest removes every danger. The sandstorm disappears, but ordinary monsters, Molduga, caves, ruins and environmental hazards remain.
---
Is Gerudo Town the same thing as Gerudo Desert?
No. Gerudo Town is the principal settlement within Gerudo Desert. The region also includes Kara Kara Bazaar, large stretches of open sand, ruins, caves, shrines and the Lightning Temple.
Is Gerudo Highlands part of Gerudo Desert?
No. They are neighbouring surface regions. Gerudo Highlands contains higher terrain and separate caves, shrines and landmarks.
Does the sandstorm ever disappear?
Yes. Complete the Gerudo regional storyline, including the Lightning Temple and Queen Gibdo. The storm clears afterwards and normal town life resumes.
What is the easiest way to cross the desert early?
Use Kara Kara Bazaar as a staging point, travel at night if necessary, prepare cooling food, and use a sand seal or vehicle. During the storm, follow visible tornadoes and quest landmarks rather than relying on the map.
How do I damage Gibdos?
Use an elemental effect first, such as lightning, fire or ice. Once a Gibdo has been weakened, ordinary weapons can damage it.
How do I defeat a Molduga?
Fight from solid ground, place a bomb or throwable object on the sand, detonate it after the Molduga swallows it, then attack while it is stunned.
Are the Gerudo Desert Depths included in this guide?
Only as a neighbouring connection. The Depths are a separate map layer and have their own locations, including the Abandoned Gerudo Mine and Desert Coliseum.
