Soryotanog Shrine is a Shrine of Light in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, found on top of the Royal Palace in Gerudo Town.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Soryotanog Shrine is on the roof of Gerudo Town’s palace, not in the surrounding desert.
  • The fastest entrance is usually Ascend from inside or beneath the palace structure, although Link can also climb the exterior.
  • The shrine contains one optional treasure chest with 10 Arrows.
  • The main trial requires a Small Key, a Zonai Fan, a Fan Guster and several movable mirrors.
  • The final door opens when light is reflected onto the receiver above the altar.
  • The shrine can be activated independently of the “Riju of Gerudo Town” main quest, although reaching Gerudo Town through the desert may be more difficult before the regional storyline is developed.

About this guide

Spoiler warning: The walkthrough reveals every puzzle solution, the hidden chest and the shrine reward.

Overview

Soryotanog Shrine is a Shrine of Light in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, found on top of the Royal Palace in Gerudo Town. Its trial is called “Buried Light”, and its puzzles centre on clearing sand with Zonai Fans, recovering mirrors and directing reflected light through the shrine.

This guide covers the shrine itself and its immediate access point. It does not treat all of Gerudo Town, the Gerudo Desert, the Gerudo Shelter or the Depths as subareas of Soryotanog Shrine. The shrine’s Depths counterpart is Gonatoyros Lightroot, but that is a separate location rather than part of the shrine interior.

Location and boundaries

Soryotanog Shrine occupies the high rocky structure above Gerudo Town’s principal palace. From the town, it is visible as the green shrine glow on the tallest part of the settlement. The shrine entrance is therefore associated with Gerudo Town, but the town’s streets, shops, palace interiors and underground shelter are neighbouring locations, not internal sections of the shrine.

The shrine’s playable interior begins after Link examines the entrance. Its functional subareas are:

There are no residents, shops, quests, businesses or named characters inside Soryotanog Shrine. The Soldier Construct encountered within the trial is an enemy encounter, not an ordinary resident or shrine attendant.

Reaching the shrine

From Gerudo Town

The simplest route is to enter the large palace building and look for a position beneath the upper structure. Use Ascend where the ceiling allows it. Several guides specifically recommend Ascend rather than climbing the entire outer rock face.

If Ascend does not register from your current position, climb the palace’s exterior walls or use nearby stairs and ledges to gain height. The shrine entrance sits above the main town buildings, so it is difficult to miss once Link is on the palace roof.

From the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower

A practical approach from outside the town is to launch from Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower and glide towards Gerudo Town. The shrine is a useful aerial landmark because it is mounted above the settlement.

The desert sandstorm can interfere with navigation before the relevant Gerudo events are resolved. If the map and Purah Pad become difficult to use, aim for the visible settlement and palace rather than trying to follow an exact coordinate line.

Access before and after the Gerudo storyline

The shrine does not require the player to complete the entire Gerudo regional quest first. It can be activated whenever Link reaches the palace roof. However, the journey through the desert, the sandstorm and the enemies around Gerudo Town can make early access less convenient. The shrine itself remains a normal Shrine of Light once entered.

Activating it creates a permanent fast-travel point, making it especially useful for returning to Gerudo Town during the regional quest.

Enemies and hazards

The main hazards are environmental rather than combat-focused:

A Soldier Construct is hidden in the second section. Another Construct is associated with the Fan Guster needed to clear sand from the gear and reach the optional chest. The shrine has no boss and no Guardian-style combat encounter.

Combat advice

You can defeat the Soldier Construct normally, but the encounter is also an opportunity to acquire the Fan Guster weapon. If you accidentally drop it, use the ordinary Zonai Fan to create an updraft and reach the upper ledge, then return to the weapon if necessary.

The Fans are more important as tools than as weapons. Avoid destroying the available devices before using them to clear the required sand.

Items and rewards

Shrine inventory

The optional chest contains 10 Arrows, consistently reported by shrine walkthroughs and item listings.

Completion reward

Examine the altar after solving the final light puzzle to receive one Light of Blessing. Four Lights of Blessing can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.

1. Enter the first chamber

After entering, look for a Zonai Fan partially buried in sand. Use Ultrahand to pull it free.

Activate the Fan by striking it, then position it so that its airflow blows across the sand piles. You can carry it manually, attach it to a weapon or shield, or simply place it beside the sand and activate it. The most direct method is to hold the active Fan near the piles until the sand disappears.

One of the cleared piles reveals a treasure chest.

2. Collect the Small Key

Open the chest to obtain the Small Key. This is the required progression item for the locked door in the same chamber.

The other sand piles are worth clearing even after you find the chest. Removing them makes the room easier to navigate and confirms that no useful object is hidden beneath the remaining debris.

Use the Small Key on the locked door and continue.

3. Enter the second chamber

The next chamber contains more sand, a Soldier Construct and several routes that are not immediately obvious.

Take the Fan from the first room with you if possible. If you left it behind, use the other Fan in the second area. Clear the nearby sand piles first, particularly those along the sides of the room.

One of the piles conceals or obstructs a passage into a side area. Clear it to reveal the route.

4. Obtain the Fan Guster

Defeat the Soldier Construct in the side section. Its weapon is a Fan Guster, a weapon with a Fan attached that can blow away sand from a distance.

Pick it up and use it against the sand obstructing the gear. The Fan Guster is especially helpful because it lets Link clear the mechanism while standing safely away from the moving parts.

5. Claim the optional chest

The optional chest is reached through the side route rather than by following the main path directly.

Some walkthroughs describe using a separate Fan to create an updraft and reach the ledge before clearing the gear. This is the same general route, but the precise order can vary depending on which Fan Link carries between rooms.

The chest is optional. If you only want the Light of Blessing, you can proceed with the main light puzzle without collecting it, although leaving the chest unopened will prevent the shrine’s chest marker from being completed on the map.

5. Claim the optional chest: steps

  1. 01
Clear the sand blocking the side passage.
  2. 02
Enter the passage and defeat the Soldier Construct if you have not already done so.
  3. 03
    Take the Fan Guster.
  4. 04
Aim it at the sand packed around the gear.
  5. 05
Continue clearing until the gear can rotate.
  6. 06
The mechanism opens the nearby gate.
  7. 07
Enter the opened area and collect 10 Arrows.

6. Reach the upper ledge

Use the ordinary Zonai Fan to generate an updraft. Stand above the Fan and open the paraglider to rise to the ledge.

Alternatively, Link may be able to reach the ledge using Ascend from a suitable position. The intended solution uses the shrine’s vertical space rather than a conventional staircase.

Clear the sand on the upper level. This exposes the light source and the mirror required for the next section.

7. Position the mirror

Use Ultrahand to pick up the mirror. Place it in the path of the light so that it reflects the beam across the chamber.

The important principle is to form a continuous path:

The mirror does not need to be placed at an exact pre-set angle. Rotate it until the beam visibly reaches the next target. If the light does not appear, move the mirror slightly rather than repeatedly rotating it in place.

7. Position the mirror: steps

  1. 01
    light source;
  2. 02
    movable mirror;
  3. 03
    receiver or reflective surface on the opposite side;
  4. 04
final receiver above the altar door.

8. Reflect the light across the room

Aim the reflected beam towards the receiving point on the far side of the chamber. Once the beam reaches it, the next part of the mechanism becomes active.

The chamber’s layout can make this look like a dead end. If the beam appears to vanish, check whether the mirror is aimed at the correct reflective surface rather than directly at the altar door. The trial expects Link to carry or reposition the mirror through the room.

9. Return to the altar door

Carry the mirror back towards the earlier room or use the available ledges and Ascend points to return to the front of the altar door.

Position the mirror above the door so that the light is directed onto the receiver mounted over the entrance. This is the final alignment.

When the beam hits the receiver, the altar door opens.

10. Collect the Light of Blessing

Enter the altar chamber and examine the shrine altar. Receive the Light of Blessing to complete Soryotanog Shrine.

There is no boss fight after the final door, and no additional progression state is tied to the regional quest. Once completed, the shrine remains available as a fast-travel point and as a completed shrine on the map.

Lore and series context

Soryotanog Shrine belongs to the Shrine of Light network introduced in Tears of the Kingdom. Its trial name, Buried Light, reflects both the physical sand mechanics and the final light-reflection puzzle. The shrine’s location also gives it a strong relationship with Gerudo Town’s architecture: unlike a remote wilderness shrine, it is built directly into the settlement’s highest palace structure.

Its corresponding Depths location is Gonatoyros Lightroot. This follows the broader Tears of the Kingdom relationship between surface Shrines of Light and Depths Lightroots, although the Lightroot is a separate exploration location with its own map position and function.

Soryotanog Shrine is a Tears of the Kingdom location rather than a returning shrine from Breath of the Wild. Gerudo Town itself returns as a major settlement, but the shrine’s sand-clearing, Fan and mirror trial is specific to the sequel’s Ultrahand-based puzzle design.
