Key takeaways
- Karahatag Shrine is at the Southern Oasis, not in Gerudo Town, Kara Kara Bazaar or the Lightning Temple.
- The shrine’s official trial name is Drifting Flame.
- You must use fire, Ultrahand and Recall to light three suspended braziers.
- The single treasure chest contains a Mighty Construct Bow.
- The chest is on a lower ledge and is easy to miss if you proceed directly to the main puzzle.
- The puzzle does not require lighting all three braziers at once Once a brazier has been lit, it remains lit.

Overview
Karahatag Shrine is a small but technically demanding Shrine of Light in the Gerudo Desert. It stands on a rocky rise at the Southern Oasis, east of the Lightning Temple and south of Gerudo Town. Its trial, Drifting Flame, is built around moving a large stone torch into the correct position and using a pressure switch, Ultrahand and Recall to light three suspended braziers.
The shrine is not a shrine quest and has no separate entrance puzzle in the overworld. Once Link reaches the green shrine entrance, the challenge takes place entirely inside the shrine.
Location and boundaries
Karahatag Shrine is located in the Southern Oasis, a named area of the Gerudo Desert. The shrine stands on top of a rocky, elevated formation surrounded by sand. It is separate from the oasis’s other surface landmarks and should not be treated as part of Gerudo Town, Kara Kara Bazaar or the Lightning Temple.
The shrine is also associated with a Depths location directly below it. Zelda Wiki identifies Gataharak Lightroot as the corresponding Lightroot beneath Karahatag Shrine’s position. This is a separate location in the Depths, not an interior section of the shrine.
Nearby named locations
These locations are useful for orientation but are not part of Karahatag Shrine:
The Lightning Temple is west of the shrine, while Gerudo Town is farther to the north-east. Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower is a practical launch point for reaching the shrine from the air.

Reaching Karahatag Shrine
From Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower
The most straightforward approach is to launch from Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower and glide south-east towards the Southern Oasis. The shrine’s green entrance is visible on the elevated rocky ground once Link approaches the oasis.
A normal paraglider route is sufficient. No special armour, quest completion, regional phenomenon or dungeon progress is required to enter the shrine.
From Gerudo Town
Leave Gerudo Town and travel across the desert towards the Southern Oasis. The shrine is south of the town and east of the Lightning Temple. In the daytime, the heat of the Gerudo Desert may require heat resistance, cooling food or another method of protection. The shrine itself is indoors, so environmental heat is only an overworld travel concern.
From the Lightning Temple
Karahatag Shrine is east of the Lightning Temple. If the Lightning Temple has already been discovered, it provides a useful landmark for locating the shrine, but completing the temple is not required.
Recommended approach
---
Recommended approach
- 01Activate the shrine from the outside to establish the fast-travel point.
- 02Enter and immediately note the torch and fire source in the first chamber.
- 03Before concentrating on the main puzzle, locate the lower ledge containing the treasure chest.
- 04Complete the three-brazier mechanism one brazier at a time.
Interior layout
The shrine’s internal spaces are puzzle rooms rather than named subareas. There are no separately named buildings, shops, settlements, characters or factions inside the shrine.
---
Karahatag Shrine consists of three functional sections
- 01Entrance chamber: contains a torch, a fire source and a suspended brazier blocking the first gate.
- 02Main puzzle chamber: contains the pressure switch, a movable stone brazier and three suspended braziers.
- 03Altar chamber: becomes accessible after all three suspended braziers have been lit.
Walkthrough
1. Open the first gate
When you enter, look towards the closed gate. A torch and a source of fire are nearby.
The gate opens when the brazier catches fire. Several guides describe this object as a hanging brazier, stone torch or inverted candle-like structure. These descriptions refer to the same puzzle object.
2. Collect the treasure chest
Proceed into the next room and look for the pressure switch and the raised platform. The treasure chest is on a lower ledge beneath this area.
The bow is the shrine’s only treasure chest reward. It is optional, but collecting it before solving the main mechanism avoids having to retrace the route.
3. Prepare the movable stone brazier
The main chamber contains a large stone brazier or torch that can be manipulated with Ultrahand.
There are three usable positions, one beneath each suspended brazier. The exact placement does not need to be pixel-perfect, but the movable flame must be close enough to the suspended brazier when the mechanism lowers it.
4. Use the pressure switch and Recall
The pressure switch controls the vertical movement of the platform and suspended braziers.
The useful principle is that Recall reverses the recent movement of the brazier, allowing it to travel through the correct path while the pressure switch changes the height of the suspended target. The three target braziers do not need to be lit simultaneously. Once lit, they remain alight even after the mechanism returns to its original position.
5. Open the final gate
After all three suspended braziers are lit, the exit gate opens.
Proceed through the newly accessible passage, climb the steps and interact with the altar. The shrine then awards a Light of Blessing and becomes a permanent fast-travel location.
---
1. Open the first gate
- 01Pick up the torch.
- 02Light it using the nearby flame.
- 03Aim the burning torch at the pointed, suspended stone structure above the gate.
- 04Set the suspended brazier alight.
2. Collect the treasure chest
- 01Move to the edge of the platform.
- 02Glide down to the lower ledge.
- 03Open the chest to receive a Mighty Construct Bow.
- 04Use Ascend to return to the upper platform.
3. Prepare the movable stone brazier
- 01Pick up the movable brazier with Ultrahand.
- 02Light it using the nearby flame.
- 03Place it upright on one of the marked white sections of the floor.
- 04Lift it as high as possible towards the corresponding suspended brazier.
4. Use the pressure switch and Recall: For each of the three positions
- 01Raise the lit stone brazier into position with Ultrahand.
- 02Leave it suspended at the required height.
- 03Move to the pressure switch.
- 04Stand on the switch so the mechanism lowers.
- 05Use Recall on the stone brazier at the appropriate moment.
- 06Allow the recalled brazier to pass beneath the suspended brazier and ignite it.
- 07Repeat the process for the next position.
Puzzle mechanics explained
Fire transfer
The first room teaches the shrine’s central idea: fire must be moved to a target that is not immediately reachable. The initial torch is used to ignite the hanging brazier above the gate.
Ultrahand positioning
The large stone brazier can be moved horizontally and vertically. It should be placed beneath one of the three white floor sections, then raised towards the matching suspended target.
Pressure-switch timing
Standing on the switch changes the height of the platform and the suspended braziers. Stepping away reverses that movement. This is why the puzzle can initially appear to require precise timing.
Recall
Recall is the key ability. Rather than carrying the brazier manually while standing on the switch, Link can position it first, then reverse its movement at the right moment. This gives the flame the required path to the suspended target.
Why the braziers can be solved separately
A common misunderstanding is that every target must be lit during one continuous cycle. That is not necessary. Each target remains lit, so Link can repeat the same procedure for the left, centre and right positions independently.
---
Treasure and rewards
The Mighty Construct Bow is a fixed chest reward rather than a random drop. The Light of Blessing is awarded for shrine completion and counts towards Link’s overall shrine progress.
---
Treasure and rewards
| Reward | How to obtain it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mighty Construct Bow | Glide to the lower ledge beneath the upper platform | Optional chest; collect before completing the main puzzle |
| Light of Blessing | Complete the Drifting Flame trial and interact with the altar | Main shrine reward |

Common problems and solutions
The first gate will not open
The torch must be lit first. Use the nearby flame, then direct the burning torch at the suspended brazier above the gate. Throwing or lifting the lit torch can both work, provided the target catches fire.
The brazier keeps falling
Make sure it is positioned on one of the marked white floor sections and raised close enough to the suspended target. If it is too far to one side, move it with Ultrahand before attempting the switch sequence.
Recall seems to do nothing
Recall must be used on the movable stone brazier after it has been moved. Target the brazier itself, not the platform or the hanging target. If the timing is wrong, cancel Recall and reposition the brazier for another attempt.
I lit one brazier but it went out
The intended shrine behaviour is that the lit targets remain active. If a target appears unlit, repeat the procedure while making sure the flame reaches the suspended brazier rather than merely passing underneath it.
I missed the chest
Return to the upper platform and glide down to the lower ledge beneath the switch area. Use Ascend to return afterwards. The chest is not locked behind a one-time event.

Missability and progression
Karahatag Shrine has no known story-state version, dungeon-state version or quest-only version in the base game. It can be completed before or after the Gerudo regional storyline.
The main optional content is the Mighty Construct Bow chest. It is possible to complete the shrine without collecting it if Link proceeds directly through the fire puzzle. The chest remains available for collection afterwards, so it is easy to recover rather than permanently miss.
There are no named residents, ordinary NPCs, shops, businesses, guards or mission-givers inside the shrine. The Southern Oasis and wider Gerudo Desert contain separate activities and landmarks, but they should not be folded into the shrine’s directory.

Lore and series context
Karahatag Shrine is a Shrine of Light introduced in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It has no known appearance as the same shrine in Breath of the Wild or another earlier Zelda game. Its trial reflects Tears of the Kingdom’s expanded emphasis on combining traditional shrine mechanisms with Link’s new abilities, especially Ultrahand and Recall.
The shrine’s counterpart relationship with Gataharak Lightroot follows the wider surface-to-Depths mapping pattern in Tears of the Kingdom, where many surface shrines have a Lightroot directly below or near their position.
