Introduction

Mayatat Shrine is a Shrine of Light on the edge of Kara Kara Bazaar in the Gerudo Desert. Its trial is called A Sliding Device, a compact Zonai-device puzzle built around sleds, sand and moving platforms. Rather than fighting enemies, Link must use Recall, Ultrahand and a small sand-going vehicle to cross the shrine’s two main sections.

The shrine is especially useful early in a Gerudo Desert journey because its entrance is immediately beside the bazaar and its completed shrine icon provides a convenient fast-travel point. The easiest approach is from the Gerudo Desert Skyview Tower, although Link can also reach it overland from the desert or from Kara Kara Bazaar itself.

Location and boundaries

Surface location

Mayatat Shrine stands directly beside Kara Kara Bazaar, a desert settlement and travel stop in the Gerudo Desert. The shrine is not part of Gerudo Town, nor is it one of the shrines hidden in the open desert away from settlement facilities. Its relevant immediate area is the shrine entrance and the nearby bazaar approach.

The shrine can be recognised by the usual green Shrine of Light entrance and its position beside the bazaar’s tents and desert paths. It is south-west of the Gerudo Desert Gateway according to one location guide, while other walkthroughs describe it more simply as being beside or at Kara Kara Bazaar. These descriptions refer to the same shrine and are not separate locations.

Included named places

The following named places are directly relevant to Mayatat Shrine’s location or continuity:

Scope note: Kara Kara Bazaar is the neighbouring settlement, not a subarea inside the shrine. Gerudo Town, Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower and the wider Gerudo Desert are useful route references but are not internal shrine areas.

Depths correspondence

Mayatat Shrine corresponds to Tatayam Lightroot in the Depths. This is part of the game’s surface-to-Depths correspondence system. Activating a surface shrine does not automatically activate its matching Lightroot, but the two locations occupy corresponding positions on the world map.

Access and recommended routes

From Gerudo Desert Skyview Tower

This is the simplest route if the shrine is not yet visible on the map.

The desert’s heat can become a concern if Link spends too long travelling on foot. A direct glide reduces exposure, although the approach can still require heat-resistant equipment, meals or elixirs depending on the time of day and Link’s current gear. The shrine itself is an enclosed interior space, so desert temperature management is primarily an approach concern rather than a puzzle concern.

From Kara Kara Bazaar

This route is useful because Mayatat Shrine acts as a convenient travel point for returning to the bazaar later. The shrine is also a natural stopping point before continuing towards Gerudo Town or deeper into the desert.

From the Gerudo Desert Gateway

The shrine lies south-west of the Gerudo Desert Gateway. The route is more exposed than the Skyview Tower glide and can involve crossing open desert. Use heat protection and avoid spending unnecessary time travelling on foot if Link lacks suitable desert equipment.

From Gerudo Desert Skyview Tower

  1. 01
Travel to Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
    Launch Link into the air.
  3. 03
Glide south-west towards Kara Kara Bazaar.
  4. 04
Aim for the shrine beside the settlement.
  5. 05
Land near the entrance and activate it before entering.

From Kara Kara Bazaar: If Link is already at the bazaar

  1. 01
Leave the settlement along the nearby desert path.
  2. 02
Look around the edge of the bazaar for the Shrine of Light entrance.
  3. 03
Interact with the shrine to activate it.
  4. 04
    Enter when ready.

Shrine layout

The shrine contains no combat encounter or boss. Its challenge is entirely environmental and depends on recognising that the available sleds are not merely transport objects. They can also be combined into a temporary bridge or climbing aid.

Named internal elements

The shrine itself does not provide many individually named rooms or landmarks. The useful directory is therefore functional rather than architectural:

These are descriptive labels for navigation, not confirmed in-game proper names.

Mayatat Shrine has two main puzzle areas

  1. 01
The entrance slope, where moving sleds provide the route to an upper ledge.
  2. 02
The sand chamber, where Link builds and drives a sled vehicle across sand and quicksand-like terrain.

1. Activate the shrine and enter

Activate Mayatat Shrine from outside before entering. Once inside, the trial title A Sliding Device appears. The opening area contains a sandy slope and moving sleds that slide down from an upper section.

Do not rush straight into the slope. First, watch the sleds and identify one that can be safely targeted with Recall.

2. Reach the upper ledge

There are two closely related ways to handle the opening section.

Method A: Recall a moving sled

This is the most direct solution and demonstrates the intended use of Recall. A walkthrough from Neoseeker describes riding a sled while Recalling it to reach the higher level.

Method B: Build a sled bridge

Some walkthroughs describe collecting several sleds and attaching them together. The combined sled assembly can be positioned against the wall or ledge to create a climbable route. This approach is less elegant but shows that the shrine permits physical manipulation of the equipment rather than requiring only one exact solution.

Practical advice: If Recall timing is awkward, use Ultrahand to experiment with the sleds. The shrine’s low-risk design means a failed construction normally costs only time.

Method A: Recall a moving sled

  1. 01
Wait for one of the sleds to move into a position where Link can reach it.
  2. 02
    Use Recall on the sled.
  3. 03
Jump onto it while it travels back up the slope.
  4. 04
Ride it to the upper ledge.
  5. 05
Leave the sled and continue into the next section.

3. Enter the sand chamber

At the upper level, continue into the larger chamber. Much of its floor is covered by sand that is difficult or impossible to cross efficiently on foot. A sled, steering device and fans are available near the assembly area.

The intended vehicle is a sled fitted with:

Different walkthroughs describe the exact arrangement slightly differently, but they agree on the essential solution: attach steering and propulsion to a sled, then drive it over the sand.

4. Build the sand vehicle

The exact placement does not need to be perfectly symmetrical. The key is to create a controllable vehicle that slides over the sand instead of forcing Link to cross the chamber on foot.

4. Build the sand vehicle: steps

  1. 01
Pick up the sled with Ultrahand.
  2. 02
Attach the steering device near the middle or upper surface of the sled.
  3. 03
Attach a Fan or Fans to provide forward movement.
  4. 04
Check that the device is not obstructed by the sled or nearby scenery.
  5. 05
Place the completed vehicle on the sand.
  6. 06
Activate the steering device and drive forwards.

5. Collect the hidden chest

Before going directly to the altar, take the route around the left-hand side of the sand chamber.

The chest is not part of a combat challenge and is not guarded by an enemy. It is easy to miss if Link drives directly towards the exit. PowerPyx and Neoseeker both identify the chest as containing 10 Arrows.

5. Collect the hidden chest: steps

  1. 01
Drive or otherwise cross towards the left side.
  2. 02
Follow the sand path around the chamber.
  3. 03
Look for the raised ledge near the side route.
  4. 04
Reach the ledge and open the treasure chest.
  5. 05
    Collect 10 Arrows.

6. Reach the altar

After collecting the chest, return to the vehicle route or construct another sled vehicle from the available parts.

The altar awards one Light of Blessing. Completion also makes the shrine a permanent fast-travel point, and the altar restores Link’s health as usual for a completed Shrine of Light.

---

6. Reach the altar: steps

  1. 01
    Cross the remaining sand chamber.
  2. 02
Drive towards the far side of the room.
  3. 03
Follow the route to the exit platform.
  4. 04
    Approach the green altar.
  5. 05
Examine it to complete the shrine.

Puzzle mechanics and alternative solutions

Recall is the opening shortcut

Recall is the most obvious solution to the entrance because it turns a descending sled into an ascending ride. Wait for a sled rather than trying to chase it down the slope. If Link boards too early or misses the timing, simply wait for another sled.

Ultrahand is the main construction tool

The shrine is forgiving about construction. The vehicle only needs to slide and steer well enough to reach the opposite side.

The sled can be used as a bridge

The first room teaches that a Zonai object can have more than one purpose. A sled is normally a transport device, but several sleds joined together can also form a climbing aid or bridge. This is why the room supplies more sleds than Link strictly needs for a simple Recall solution.

You do not need to preserve the first vehicle

It is often quicker to abandon the original sand vehicle after reaching the chest route and build another one near the far side. Do not waste time trying to drive back across the entire room if the vehicle becomes stuck or points in the wrong direction.

Inventory and rewards

The Arrows are a fixed treasure-chest reward rather than a random drop. The Light of Blessing is the shrine completion reward.

Uses of the reward

A Light of Blessing can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue:

Mayatat Shrine therefore contributes to Link’s wider health and stamina progression, even though the exchange does not take place inside the shrine.

Enemies, hazards and failure points

Enemies

No enemy encounter or boss is required inside Mayatat Shrine. The shrine’s difficulty comes from movement, construction and navigation.

Sand and quicksand-like surfaces

The main hazard is the sand chamber. Link can struggle to move across it directly, while the sled vehicle is designed to glide over the surface. If the vehicle is driven at an awkward angle, it may veer into a wall, strand itself or become difficult to turn.

Desert heat

Heat is relevant outside the shrine, particularly when approaching overland. It is not normally a problem once Link is inside the enclosed shrine. If approaching from a distant desert route, prepare with heat-resistant armour, cooling food or cooling elixirs.

Missable content

The chest containing 10 Arrows can be missed if Link goes straight from the vehicle assembly area to the altar. It is not permanently missable, however. The shrine can be re-entered after completion, allowing Link to collect the chest later.

The shrine itself has no reported progression-dependent reward, story lock or one-time-only item. The main progression change is that the completed shrine becomes available as a fast-travel point.

Practical exploration checklist

Before leaving Mayatat Shrine, check that you have:

If the shrine icon remains blue rather than showing the completed orange or blue completion state used by the map, re-enter and check the altar or the chest route.

Nearby connections

Mayatat Shrine is most closely associated with Kara Kara Bazaar. The bazaar is a separate settlement with its own tents, characters, services and story context. Those features should not be counted as shrine content.

The shrine is also useful as a travel hub for:

Its most important practical connection is to Kara Kara Bazaar. After completion, players can return to the bazaar quickly without repeating the desert approach.

Lore and series context

Mayatat Shrine is a Shrine of Light, the main surface shrine type introduced in Tears of the Kingdom. Like the other Shrines of Light, it is part of the game’s exploration and character-progression system rather than a conventional dungeon.

The trial’s title, A Sliding Device, reflects the shrine’s central design. It is not simply a generic sand puzzle. The room specifically asks the player to understand how sleds behave on sand and how Zonai devices can be combined into improvised transport.

Mayatat Shrine is a Tears of the Kingdom location. It is not a returning shrine from Breath of the Wild, and its corresponding Depths location, Tatayam Lightroot, belongs to the sequel’s expanded world structure.
