This guide covers Tatayam Lightroot and its immediately adjoining Abandoned Kara Kara Mine complex in the base game of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It does not treat the entire Gerudo Desert Depths as part of the location.

Introduction

Tatayam Lightroot is a travel point in the Gerudo Desert Depths, positioned directly beside the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine. It is the Depths counterpart of Mayatat Shrine on the surface, making the shrine-to-Lightroot relationship especially useful when navigating the dark underground map. The Lightroot itself is a compact location, but its importance comes from the mine immediately next to it, which contains a Forge Construct, a Miner’s Mask chest, a Schema Stone and several Depths resources.

Tatayam is therefore best understood as a checkpoint and approach point, rather than a large settlement or a standalone dungeon. Activate the root to illuminate the surrounding map and establish a fast-travel destination, then use it as the base for searching the adjoining mine.

Overview and boundaries

Tatayam Lightroot is a single Lightroot structure in the Gerudo Desert Depths. Its proper location boundary is the illuminated root platform and the nearby ground around it. The Abandoned Kara Kara Mine is a distinct named location immediately beside the Lightroot, but it is included in this guide because the two are designed to be explored together and the mine is commonly used as the reason for travelling to Tatayam.

The wider Gerudo Desert Depths is not part of Tatayam Lightroot itself. Other Lightroots, mines, monster arenas, cemeteries and routes in the region should be treated as neighbouring locations rather than subdivisions of Tatayam. The most important distinction is between:

The mine corresponds to the Kara Kara Bazaar area on the surface, while Tatayam Lightroot corresponds specifically to Mayatat Shrine. This means that the Lightroot is not the underground equivalent of the entire bazaar.

Nearby but separate places

The sources consulted identify the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine as directly beside Tatayam Lightroot, while broader regional guides place other Lightroots and mines nearby without treating them as part of Tatayam.

Geography and layout

Tatayam Lightroot

The Lightroot stands on an open section of the Depths floor. Before activation, the surrounding area is covered by darkness, as with other parts of the Depths. Activating it:

Its position is useful because the mine is close enough to reach immediately without a long underground journey. The Lightroot also provides a safe reference point when returning from the mine or travelling across the surrounding Gerudo underground region.

Abandoned Kara Kara Mine

The Abandoned Kara Kara Mine is a larger ruin complex beside the Lightroot. It contains circular stone structures, mining remains, construct equipment and several resource-gathering opportunities. Its most important features are:

The mine is not a conventional dungeon. There is no shrine puzzle sequence, dungeon boss or required progression route inside it. Instead, it is a compact exploration and resource site with several rewards layered around the same ruin.

Access and routes

The most direct approach is through a chasm in or around the Gerudo region, followed by underground travel towards the Lightroot. Regional guides commonly recommend entering through the Birida Lookout Chasm or the East Gerudo Chasm, then travelling towards the Tatayam area. The precise best route depends on which chasms and Lightroots have already been discovered.

The direct shrine-to-Lightroot correspondence is one of the game’s most useful navigation clues. Nintendo guidance notes that Lightroots are positioned beneath surface shrines, allowing players to compare the two map layers when locating missing underground areas.

From another Depths checkpoint

If you have already activated Lightroots elsewhere in the Gerudo Desert Depths, fast travel to the nearest known point and approach Tatayam across the revealed map. This is safer than making a blind expedition through completely unlit terrain.

Recommended surface route: A practical route is

  1. 01
Enter the Depths through a Gerudo-region chasm.
  2. 02
Throw Brightbloom Seeds or use another light source immediately after landing.
  3. 03
Travel towards the approximate coordinates (-3291, -2511, -0475).
  4. 04
Look for the Lightroot’s glow or use the surface map to compare its position with Mayatat Shrine.
  5. 05
    Activate Tatayam Lightroot.
  6. 06
Turn towards the nearby mine and search the ruin complex.

The Abandoned Kara Kara Mine

Mine functions and services

The mine is a former processing site. Its Forge Construct can process Zonaite into charge-related items. This makes Tatayam a useful stop for players who are gathering Zonaite and want to convert it into energy resources.

The usual exchange rate recorded by guide sources is three units of the relevant Zonaite type for one charge item.

Do not confuse this with a general shop selling weapons, armour or meals. The Forge Construct is a specific Zonaite-processing service, not a settlement shop.

Steward Construct and Schema Stone

A Steward Construct waits near the centre of the mine. Its progression-related functions become available after Link has acquired the Autobuild ability. Once the relevant requirements are met, the Construct can provide the Instant Scaffold Schema Stone and place the necessary components nearby so that the design can be tested.

The reward is not required to activate Tatayam Lightroot. It is also not necessary to visit the mine in order to obtain Autobuild. Rather, it is an additional reward for returning to the mine after progressing through the Depths-related story content.

Miner’s Mask

The most notable fixed item near Tatayam is the Miner’s Mask, one piece of the Miner’s Armor set. The chest is located in the mine, in the middle of a conspicuous circular stone structure. The Lightroot is an excellent waypoint for finding it because the mine lies directly beside the root.

The Miner’s Mask improves visibility in dark areas through the set’s Glow effect. It does not illuminate the map by itself and does not replace Lightroots or Brightbloom Seeds.

Additional mine resources

The Abandoned Kara Kara Mine contains several resource types, including:

These are fixed location-based resources or encounters rather than services offered by Tatayam Lightroot itself. Some ordinary resource drops can vary according to enemy state, respawn behaviour or collection history, so they should not be treated as a guaranteed single-use inventory list unless the specific item is tied to a named chest.

Characters, constructs and factions

Forge Construct

The Forge Construct is the mine’s principal service provider. It processes Zonaite and Large Zonaite into charge items. It is not a travelling merchant and does not offer the general inventory of a surface shop.

Status: permanent service NPC.

Steward Construct

The Steward Construct is associated with the mine’s old construction and design systems. After Autobuild becomes available, it can provide the Instant Scaffold Schema Stone and prepare materials for testing.

Status: progression-dependent construct.

Yiga Footsoldier

A Yiga Footsoldier disguises itself as a researcher on the western side of the mine. The disguised figure stands near a lit campfire and a machine assembled from a Wing, Fan and Steering Stick. Speaking to the apparent researcher triggers the deception and attack under normal circumstances.

The encounter has a special interaction with Yiga Clan equipment. If Link is wearing Yiga Clan Gear, the disguised enemy does not attack in the usual way and instead allows him to inspect the area. This makes the mine one of the locations where wearing the full disguise can change an otherwise hostile encounter.

Status: hostile faction encounter, with Yiga disguise interaction.

Other inhabitants

No permanent Gerudo residents, travelling merchants, guards or named civilian characters are documented as living at Tatayam Lightroot or in the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine. The mine is an abandoned industrial site occupied mainly by Constructs, hostile remnants and the disguised Yiga operative.

Enemies and hazards

Tatayam Lightroot itself is not presented as a combat arena. The adjoining mine may contain or expose Link to:

The Yiga encounter is the most distinctive fixed threat. Decayed Constructs are useful targets because searching them can produce Zonai Charges, but they are still hazardous if approached carelessly.

Gloom preparation

Gloom can reduce Link’s maximum hearts in the Depths. Before leaving the Lightroot’s illuminated area, carry food that restores gloom-damaged hearts or use equipment and effects suited to underground exploration. Brightbloom Seeds are still useful even after activation because the Lightroot’s illumination only covers its surrounding region, not every tunnel or structure in the mine.

Collectibles and named entries directory

Fixed named items

The Miner’s Mask is found in a chest in the Abandoned Kara Kara Mine. The Instant Scaffold Schema Stone is connected to the mine’s Steward Construct and requires Autobuild-related progression before it can be claimed.

Resource types

The directory above distinguishes fixed named rewards and services from ordinary resource drops. The presence and exact arrangement of minor deposits should not be treated as a complete guaranteed inventory without a map-by-map chest and deposit survey.

Lore and atmosphere

The Abandoned Kara Kara Mine suggests that the Depths once supported organised Zonai-era extraction and processing operations. The Forge Construct’s continued operation contrasts with the mine’s abandonment, while the Steward Construct preserves a record of construction knowledge through its Schema Stone. The location therefore combines three layers of history:

The mine’s correspondence with Kara Kara Bazaar is also part of the wider structural relationship between the surface and Depths. However, the game does not present Tatayam Lightroot as a literal underground version of the bazaar. The surface counterpart of the Lightroot itself is Mayatat Shrine, while the mine is separately associated with the bazaar area.

Progression and missability

Tatayam Lightroot is not tied to a temporary story state and is not known to become permanently inaccessible. Lightroots can be activated after the main story as well as during normal exploration. General Lightroot guides likewise treat the locations as permanent exploration objectives rather than missable one-time events.

The Lightroot itself does not require Autobuild, a regional phenomenon quest or completion of a temple. The Schema Stone is the main item in the immediate area with a progression requirement.
