About this guide
Scope: Base-game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Spoiler level: Light story and exploration spoilers, including Depths access and regional progression
Overview
Kawamit Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Eldin Canyon Depths, the large northeastern Depths region beneath Eldin Canyon and the areas surrounding Death Mountain. It is the Depths counterpart to Timawak Shrine on the Surface. Unlike a mine, settlement or dungeon entrance, Kawamit Lightroot is a compact utility location whose importance comes from its illumination, fast-travel function and position on the wider Eldin Depths route.
The Lightroot stands in a hazardous volcanic section of the Depths. The surrounding Eldin area follows the region’s heat rules, so Link needs Flame Guard protection to remain in the area safely. The local Lightroot page specifically identifies two levels of Flame Guard as necessary for reaching Kawamit Lightroot without taking fire damage.
Kawamit is not a broad district with its own villages, shops or named inhabitants. The appropriate boundary for this guide is therefore:
It does not include all of Eldin Canyon Depths, the Fire Temple, Gorondia, the Abandoned Eldin Mine or nearby Lightroots as though they were subdivisions of Kawamit. Those are separate named locations in the wider region.
Overview
A Lightroot is a large luminous root structure found throughout the Depths. Activating one brightens the surrounding area, reveals map data for the nearby region and creates a fast-travel point. Lightroots can also restore hearts that have been disabled by Gloom. Kawamit provides these standard Lightroot functions rather than a unique service.
The name follows the game’s recurring relationship between Surface Shrines and Depths Lightroots. Kawamit is the reversed form of Timawak, the name of the corresponding Surface shrine. The correspondence is also useful in practical exploration: if Timawak Shrine is visible on the Surface map, its matching Lightroot can be sought in the same general horizontal position on the Depths map. Lightroots normally sit directly beneath Surface Shrines, although the game includes a small number of exceptions.
Kawamit is therefore best treated as a navigation landmark rather than a destination with a long internal route. Most of the challenge lies in reaching the correct part of Eldin Canyon Depths while dealing with heat, darkness, cliffs, lava and the region’s vertical terrain.

Location and boundaries
Eldin Canyon Depths
Kawamit Lightroot belongs to Eldin Canyon Depths, a northeastern Depths region beneath Eldin province and Death Mountain. Eldin Canyon Depths is a substantial area containing several Lightroots, the Fire Temple, the Abandoned Eldin Mine, the Scorching Coliseum and the surrounding volcanic underground landscape.
These are neighbouring or regional navigation points, not child areas of Kawamit Lightroot.
Death Mountain Depths is separate
The map relationship around Death Mountain can be confusing. Death Mountain Depths is treated as a separate named area surrounded by Eldin Canyon Depths. A player travelling through this part of the underground may pass between the two regional labels, but that does not make Death Mountain Depths a subarea of Kawamit.
Likewise, Eldin Mountains Depths is a separate neighbouring region. Kawamit should not be used as a catch-all name for all volcanic Depths locations.

Exact position
The difference may result from map pin placement, coordinate rounding or the point selected on the large Lightroot structure. For normal play, use the name and the position beneath Timawak Shrine rather than relying on the final one or two coordinate digits.
Named entries within the immediate scope
No separately named cave, mine, settlement, building, shop, road, camp, outpost or landmark is verified as part of Kawamit Lightroot itself in the sources consulted.

Access and routes
Main story route
The most natural early route into the region is connected to the Eldin storyline. After defeating Moragia, Link jumps into the Death Mountain Chasm, entering the Depths beneath the mountain. This route leads into the Eldin underground network and is the principal story-associated access route described by regional guides.
This does not place Link directly beside Kawamit Lightroot. It provides access to the wider Eldin Canyon Depths, from which the Lightroot must be reached by underground travel.
No direct surface drop at Kawamit
Eldin Canyon Depths has no ordinary chasm that drops directly into the region immediately above Kawamit. The region guide instead identifies nearby access through the Death Mountain Chasm and notes the Minshi Woods Chasm near the south-western border, while the Death Mountain Chasm leads to the separate Death Mountain Depths.
This is why searching the Surface map directly above Kawamit may not reveal a convenient entrance. The matching Surface shrine helps identify the position, but it is not itself a hole into the Depths.
Using the Surface shrine as a map reference
Timawak Shrine is located in the Eldin Canyon region near Goronbi Lake and south of Gortram Cliff. Its listed coordinates are approximately 1800, 1640, 0326. Kawamit Lightroot is directly below this general position on the Depths map.
This map-layer comparison is particularly useful because the Depths’ cliffs, valleys and lava channels can make a straight-line approach impossible.
---
Using the Surface shrine as a map reference: A reliable search method is
- 01Open the Surface map and locate Timawak Shrine.
- 02Move the map cursor to the shrine’s position.
- 03Switch to the Depths layer without moving the cursor.
- 04Use the matching horizontal position to identify Kawamit Lightroot.
- 05Plan a route from an already activated Eldin Lightroot or from the Death Mountain entry route.
Environmental hazards
Scorching climate
The primary hazard is the Eldin region’s heat. The area is identified as a scorching climate, and Kawamit’s location page states that Link needs at least two levels of Flame Guard to reach it without taking fire damage.
The Lightroot’s illumination does not remove the heat hazard. It makes navigation easier, but environmental protection remains necessary.
Darkness and Gloom
Before activation, the approach may be difficult to see. Brightbloom Seeds, arrows combined with Brightbloom Seeds and Zonai light devices are useful for locating ledges, lava channels and enemy silhouettes.
The normal Lightroot benefit applies once Kawamit is activated:
These are standard functions, not Kawamit-exclusive mechanics.
Terrain
The Eldin underground contains steep cliffs, high shelves and volcanic ground. A route that looks open on the map may be blocked by a vertical wall or a lava-filled depression. Climbing, Ascend, Zonai vehicles and carefully placed Brightbloom markers are more dependable than trying to travel in a perfectly straight line.

What Kawamit Lightroot provides
Map illumination
Activating Kawamit brightens the nearby Eldin Canyon Depths. This is valuable even if the player is not collecting Lightroots systematically, because the newly visible map makes it easier to identify:
Fast travel
Kawamit becomes a travel point once activated. It is especially useful as a return point for:
The location does not contain a bed, cooking station, shop, forge or other separately verified facility. Its service is the Lightroot itself.
Gloom recovery
Lightroots restore hearts that have been disabled by Gloom. This makes Kawamit a useful staging point even when the player has already explored the surrounding area and only needs a safe location to recover before entering another dark or Gloom-heavy section.
---
Surface counterpart: Timawak Shrine
Timawak Shrine is the Surface shrine corresponding to Kawamit Lightroot. Its trial is called Against the Flow, and it is situated in the Eldin Canyon region near Goronbi Lake.
The shrine and Lightroot are separate locations in separate map layers. Activating or completing one does not automatically activate the other. The Surface shrine contains its own puzzle and reward, while the Lightroot provides Depths illumination and travel utility.
Timawak Shrine directory
The shrine’s puzzle involves travelling against flowing water and using movable objects to progress. That puzzle belongs to Timawak Shrine and should not be treated as an activity inside Kawamit Lightroot.

Residents, factions and services
No named resident, travelling NPC, faction headquarters, shopkeeper or law-enforcement presence is verified at Kawamit Lightroot.
The wider Eldin region includes Gorons, researchers, miners and story-associated characters, but their presence in Goron City, the Fire Temple route or other Eldin locations does not make them residents of Kawamit. The Lightroot itself is an environmental structure rather than a settlement.

Enemies, bosses and encounters
No boss is directly associated with Kawamit Lightroot in the consulted location references. The wider Eldin Canyon Depths contains hostile encounters and major points of interest, but they should not be assigned to Kawamit without a location-specific source.
Enemy encounters in the Eldin Depths can vary by route and by the player’s exploration state. Treat ordinary enemies encountered on the approach as route encounters rather than fixed features of the Lightroot.
Verified enemy directory
This distinction matters because the presence of a hostile monster somewhere in Eldin Canyon Depths does not prove that it belongs to Kawamit’s immediate area.
---
Items and collectibles
Kawamit Lightroot does not have a separately verified unique treasure, armour piece, quest reward or collectible assigned to the Lightroot structure itself.
The surrounding Eldin Canyon Depths can contain mining deposits, chests and ordinary exploration rewards, but these are dependent on the exact route taken and should not be presented as fixed Kawamit rewards without a map-level source identifying them.
Verified item directory
The associated Timawak Shrine has its own shrine treasure and Light of Blessing, but those belong to the Surface shrine rather than the Lightroot.

Suggested exploration route
Route B: completionist Lightroot sweep
---
Route A: story-led approach
- 01Progress through the Eldin storyline until the Death Mountain route is available.
- 02After the Moragia encounter, enter the Depths through the Death Mountain Chasm.
- 03Activate the first convenient Lightroot in the Eldin underground network.
- 04Equip two levels of Flame Guard before making a long volcanic traverse.
- 05Use the Surface map to confirm Timawak Shrine’s position.
- 06Switch to the Depths map and plot a route towards approximately 1795, 1630, -0749.
- 07Use Brightbloom Seeds to illuminate cliffs and lava channels.
- 08Activate Kawamit Lightroot as soon as it is reached.
- 09Use it as a fast-travel base for nearby Eldin exploration.
Route B: completionist Lightroot sweep
- 01Begin at an activated Lightroot in Eldin Canyon Depths or Death Mountain Depths.
- 02Compare the Surface and Depths maps to identify the next shrine-root pair.
- 03Travel between roots rather than crossing the region blindly.
- 04Mark lava barriers and tall underground cliffs on the map.
- 05Activate Kawamit when passing through the Timawak area.
- 06Continue towards the other named Eldin Lightroots, checking that you do not accidentally cross into Death Mountain Depths or Eldin Mountains Depths.
- 07Return to Kawamit for Gloom recovery and fast travel when necessary.
Practical checklist
---
Lore and naming
Kawamit’s name is tied to Timawak Shrine through the game’s reversed naming convention. The shrine’s name and the Lightroot’s name are not unrelated labels: they are the Surface and Depths versions of the same map position. This makes the pair useful both thematically and as a practical map-navigation tool.
The Lightroot itself has no separately documented historical event, character conversation or lore text. Its significance is functional and geographical: it is one of the luminous roots that allow exploration of the Depths, a region afflicted by darkness and Gloom.
