Gedihcayam Lightroot is a Lightroot in the south-eastern part of the Eldin Canyon Depths in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Location South-eastern Eldin Canyon Depths, near the southern side of the Death Mountain and Akkala underground approaches.
  • Surface counterpart Mayachideg Shrine, on the surface near the south-eastern Eldin Canyon and South Akkala Stable.
  • Coordinates Approximately 3061, 1825, -0662 to -0683, depending on the map source and the point measured on the Lightroot structure. Use the name and surrounding landmarks rather than relying on a single vertical coordinate.
  • Environmental requirement The area has a scorching climate. You need two levels of Flame Guard to explore here without taking heat damage.
  • Main reward No unique chest or quest reward is attached to the Lightroot itself. Activating it reveals the local Depths map and unlocks fast travel.
  • Important neighbours Nipahsom Lightroot is to the west; the Death Mountain Depths are to the north-west; the Ancient Underground Fortress lies farther to the south-east.

Note

Base game guide. This article covers Gedihcayam Lightroot itself and its immediate connections, not the whole Eldin Canyon Depths region. Nearby Lightroots, the surface shrine above it and the surrounding Depths landmarks are included only where they help with navigation or explain the location’s role.

Overview

Gedihcayam Lightroot is a Lightroot in the south-eastern part of the Eldin Canyon Depths in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It lies south-east of the Death Mountain Depths, north-west of the Ancient Underground Fortress and east of Nipahsom Lightroot. Activating it illuminates the surrounding Depths map, removes the local darkness and creates a permanent fast-travel point.

The Lightroot is directly associated with Mayachideg Shrine on the surface. Like other Lightroots, this correspondence is useful for map completion: if Mayachideg Shrine is marked on the surface map but its matching Lightroot is missing below, Gedihcayam is the likely location to check.

Gedihcayam is not a dungeon, settlement or mine. It is a compact Depths landmark whose main value is its map reveal and travel function. The approach is made more difficult by the region’s heat, so preparation matters more here than at many central-Hyrule Lightroots.

Location and boundaries

Gedihcayam Lightroot belongs to the Eldin Canyon Depths, rather than the separate Death Mountain Depths area. It occupies a transition zone between the southern Eldin underground region and the wider underground routes leading towards Akkala. Zelda Dungeon places it south-east of the Death Mountain Depths and north-west of the Ancient Underground Fortress. Nipahsom Lightroot is the clearest nearby comparison, positioned to the west.

It does not include all of the following, despite their proximity or usefulness for navigation:

Named entries within the immediate scope

Nearby but separate named locations

What the Lightroot does

Gedihcayam Lightroot has the normal functions of a Lightroot.

Map reveal

Activating the root illuminates the surrounding section of the Depths map. This is particularly useful in this part of the underground, where long dark stretches and heat damage can make visual navigation difficult. Lightroots function in a similar broad way to Skyview Towers on the surface: they reveal map data and make subsequent exploration easier.

Fast travel

Once activated, Gedihcayam Lightroot becomes a travel point. You can return to it from the map without making the same underground journey again. This makes it useful as a staging point for:

Gloom recovery

The activated Lightroot restores gloom-damaged hearts when Link is within its light. This does not replace healing lost maximum health through meals or other means, but it makes Lightroots valuable safe points during extended Depths exploration.

Environment and preparation

The principal hazard is scorching heat rather than gloom alone. The in-game description warns that heat resistance is required, and the location is documented as needing two levels of Flame Guard to prevent damage.

Before entering the relevant underground route, bring one of the following:

Do not confuse Flame Guard with ordinary heat resistance. Flame Guard is the protection used for Eldin’s fiery conditions. Ordinary cooling effects used in hot surface climates do not provide the same protection against this type of underground heat.

Access and routes

There is no separate entrance building or puzzle at Gedihcayam Lightroot. The challenge is reaching the correct underground area and surviving the heat.

Route 1: Enter through a suitable nearby chasm

The most straightforward method is to descend through a chasm that gives access to the Eldin or southern Akkala side of the Depths, then travel towards the Lightroot using the underground map.

Because published coordinate lists differ slightly on the exact height value, the horizontal position is more reliable than the final vertical number. One source lists 3061, 1825, -0683, while other location lists place it around 3061, 1824, -0662. These are close enough to identify the same Lightroot, but they should not be treated as two separate locations.

Route 2: Travel from Nipahsom Lightroot

If Nipahsom Lightroot is already active, it is a useful western approach. Gedihcayam lies to the east of Nipahsom, and the two roots are close enough to serve as a pair when filling in this section of the map. The route between them is still subject to the Depths’ heat and darkness, so keep Flame Guard active rather than assuming the short distance makes protection unnecessary.

Route 3: Use the surface counterpart as a map reference

Mayachideg Shrine is directly above or closely associated with Gedihcayam Lightroot. This makes it a useful surface reference even if you do not descend from the exact point above the shrine. The shrine is in the south-eastern Eldin Canyon area, overlooking the vicinity of South Akkala Stable.

The surface-to-Depths relationship is best used for orientation rather than as proof that a vertical tunnel exists directly beneath the shrine. The game’s map correspondence identifies the matching location, but it does not mean that every shrine has a simple open shaft leading straight down to its Lightroot.

Route 1: Enter through a suitable nearby chasm: A practical sequence is

  1. 01
Prepare two levels of Flame Guard before descending.
  2. 02
Enter the Depths through a chasm on the Eldin or Akkala side.
  3. 03
Activate any Lightroot encountered on the way, both for visibility and as a return point.
  4. 04
Use the map to orient towards Gedihcayam’s approximate position around 3061, 1825.
  5. 05
Follow open ground and underground corridors rather than climbing blindly through heated rock.
  6. 06
Look for the Lightroot’s pale glow before entering its immediate area.
  7. 07
Activate Gedihcayam Lightroot and use its light to recover any gloom damage.

Route 2: Travel from Nipahsom Lightroot: Suggested sequence

  1. 01
    Warp to Nipahsom Lightroot.
  2. 02
Face east or south-east and use the map to maintain the correct line.
  3. 03
Mark Gedihcayam if it is not already visible.
  4. 04
Use Brightbloom Seeds at bends, ledges and unlit open ground.
  5. 05
Avoid spending stamina on unnecessary vertical climbing.
  6. 06
Activate Gedihcayam, then use the newly illuminated area to identify further routes.

Surface counterpart: Mayachideg Shrine

Mayachideg Shrine is a separate location in the Eldin Canyon surface region. Its trial is Proving Grounds: The Hunt, and its reward is a Light of Blessing. The shrine is near the south-eastern edge of Eldin Canyon and South Akkala Stable.

The shrine and Lightroot should be kept separate when planning completion:

Mayachideg Shrine’s trial strips Link of his normal equipment and supplies weapons and Zonai devices for an encounter with Constructs. That challenge belongs to the shrine, not Gedihcayam Lightroot. The Lightroot has no equivalent combat trial or shrine chest.

Nearby connections

Nipahsom Lightroot

Nipahsom Lightroot is the nearest named Lightroot specifically identified as being west of Gedihcayam. It is a useful navigation anchor and a sensible target for a two-root exploration route.

Death Mountain Depths

The Death Mountain Depths lie to the north-west. They are a separate regional area with their own terrain, heat hazards and landmarks. Do not treat every heated cavern or mining route in that direction as part of Gedihcayam Lightroot’s location.

Ancient Underground Fortress

The Ancient Underground Fortress is positioned to the south-east of Gedihcayam. It is a separate landmark rather than a subarea of the Lightroot. It may become a useful destination after the local map has been illuminated, but no fortress quest, resident or reward should be attributed to Gedihcayam itself.

Mayachideg Shrine and South Akkala Stable

These are surface connections, not underground facilities. They are useful for establishing the approximate position of the Lightroot and for preparing at the surface before returning to the Depths.

Residents, factions and services

Gedihcayam Lightroot has no verified resident NPCs, ordinary settlement population, faction headquarters, shop, inn, stable or security force.

Verified service directory

There is no evidence that the location contains:

The absence of these services should not be confused with the absence of ordinary Depths encounters elsewhere in the Eldin Canyon region. No broader regional directory is being folded into this location.

Enemies and combat

No boss encounter is tied directly to Gedihcayam Lightroot. The Lightroot itself is a navigation and recovery landmark rather than a combat arena.

Monsters may appear in the surrounding Depths depending on the route taken, darkness level and local terrain, but the available sources consulted do not establish a unique fixed enemy roster for the immediate Lightroot area. It is therefore safer to treat nearby encounters as ordinary regional Depths threats rather than as a named Gedihcayam encounter.

Items and collectibles

The Lightroot itself has no verified unique treasure chest, armour piece, shrine chest or named collectible. Its fixed rewards are functional:

Random monster drops, ore deposits or materials encountered on the approach should not be presented as fixed Gedihcayam rewards. Their presence depends on the route, enemy group and surrounding terrain rather than on the Lightroot’s activation.

Collectible directory for the immediate location

No additional fixed collectible is verified in the sources consulted.

Recommended exploration route

For players completing the south-eastern Eldin and northern Akkala Depths, the following route is efficient:

Recommended exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Prepare Flame Guard. Confirm that Link has two levels before descending.
  2. 02
Enter from the Eldin or Akkala side. Use the safest nearby chasm available to your current map progress.
  3. 03
Activate an approach Lightroot. This gives a fallback travel point and makes the route easier to repeat.
  4. 04
Move towards Nipahsom or Gedihcayam. If Nipahsom is already active, use it as the western starting point.
  5. 05
Light the route conservatively. Place Brightbloom Seeds before crossing unfamiliar drops or heated open ground.
  6. 06
    Activate Gedihcayam Lightroot.
  7. 07
Pause at the root. Recover gloom damage and inspect the newly revealed map.
  8. 08
Choose the next destination. Continue towards the Death Mountain Depths, the Ancient Underground Fortress or another nearby Eldin Lightroot only after confirming the route.
  9. 09
Return to the surface if supplies are low. The root remains available as a fast-travel destination.
