Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, base game

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The tower is in the Gerudo Highlands region, north-west of Spectacle Rock, rather than at Gerudo Town or at the separate Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower.
  • Sawson is trapped on a broken elevator Use Ultrahand to attach a board and construction materials to the elevator’s missing counterweight platform.
  • A small, centred load works best An oversized platform can catch on the surrounding scaffolding and fail to move correctly.
  • The repair does not require a shrine quest, dungeon or regional phenomenon You only need access to the tower and Ultrahand.
  • The reward is Chilly Steamed Mushrooms, and Sawson warns Link about the heat of the desert.
  • Activating the tower reveals several map layers, not merely the immediate canyon around the tower.

About this guide

Scope note: This guide covers Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower itself and its immediate working area, including the broken elevator, Sawson’s repair site and the tower’s launch platform. It does not treat the wider Gerudo Canyon, Gerudo Canyon Pass, Gerudo Canyon Mine, Gerudo Canyon Stable, Gerudo Desert or Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower as parts of the tower location. Those neighbouring places are listed separately where they are useful for navigation.

Introduction

Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower is a surveying tower built on the high ground north-west of Spectacle Rock, overlooking the approach to the Gerudo Desert. In Tears of the Kingdom, it begins in a disabled state. The problem is not the tower’s terminal itself, but a broken counterweight elevator that prevents the Hudson Construction worker Sawson from reaching the machinery above.

The repair is a compact early-game Ultrahand puzzle. Link must add weight to the elevator’s missing platform, raise Sawson to the upper level and allow him to replace the tower’s heat-damaged parts. Once the repair is complete, the tower becomes a fast-travel point and reveals map data for the Gerudo Desert, southern Gerudo Highlands, Gerudo Desert Sky and the southern part of the Gerudo Highlands Sky.

Location and boundaries

The tower site

Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower stands on an elevated rocky shelf overlooking the canyon route towards the Gerudo Desert. The site consists of more than just the tall tower model. Its practical location includes:

The tower is associated with Gerudo Highlands in the game’s regional naming, although it functions as the main map-reveal point for the southern Gerudo area and Gerudo Desert. This is why guides sometimes describe it as a Gerudo Desert tower while location lists place it in Gerudo Highlands. The two descriptions refer to different organisational purposes rather than two separate towers.

What is not part of this location

The following are nearby or connected places, but should not be merged into the tower’s own directory:

Gerudo Canyon is a larger recurring landscape containing multiple locations, while Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower is one specific facility within that landscape. The separate Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower is also not an alternate name for this tower. It is another Skyview Tower in the Gerudo Highlands, located at Thyphlo Ruins north of the Great Hyrule Forest.

Facilities and named entries

Canonical named entries within the tower site

The elevator is an unnamed functional structure rather than a separately named map location, but it is central to the tower’s repair sequence. Sawson is the Hudson Construction worker assigned to repair the tower.

Services available after activation

Once repaired, the tower provides two important functions:

Skyview Towers use a launch system rather than the climbing-and-terminal arrangement associated with Sheikah Towers. Link is fired into the sky, where the Purah Pad records the surrounding Surface and Sky map data before he glides back down. Across Hyrule, Skyview Towers are Hudson Construction facilities created for this surveying purpose.

There is no verified shop, inn, stable, armour shop, cooking service, shrine entrance or permanent merchant inside the tower site. The tower’s function is transport, surveying and progression through its repair interaction.

Reaching the tower

A practical route is to travel south-west across Hyrule towards the canyon system north of the Gerudo Desert. The exact route depends on whether Link is travelling from Lookout Landing, Hyrule Field, the Gerudo Canyon road or the desert side.

The tower is easiest to recognise from a distance because it sits above the canyon route rather than in the low desert basin. If the landscape becomes fully desert-like and the tower is no longer above you, you have probably descended too far towards the Gerudo Desert.

From the Gerudo Canyon road

The canyon road is the most natural ground approach. Follow the route into the higher canyon area, then climb or ascend towards the tower platform. The tower is north-west of Spectacle Rock, a useful landmark when approaching from the desert side.

Using climbing, Ascend or Zonai devices

The tower does not require a special traversal trick to reach. Link can:

The repair puzzle itself does not require a specific construction recipe. Ultrahand is sufficient, provided the elevator’s counterweight receives enough mass to move Sawson’s platform.

Preparation

Sawson specifically warns that the Gerudo Desert’s heat can become dangerous and recommends meals that provide cooling effects.

---

Using climbing, Ascend or Zonai devices

  1. 01
    climb the surrounding rock;
  2. 02
    use Ascend where a suitable overhang or ceiling is available;
  3. 03
    build a small flying or lifting device;
  4. 04
glide in from a higher point.

How to repair the tower

The problem

When Link arrives, Sawson is stranded on the lower end of a rudimentary elevator. He explains that the platform which once counterbalanced his weight has gone missing. Without a counterweight, the elevator cannot move him to the upper part of the tower, so he cannot repair the damaged mechanism.

The important detail is that the solution is a weight puzzle, not an electrical or mechanical repair. Link does not need to activate a switch elsewhere in the canyon.

If the elevator will not move

The most common failure is building an oversized or uneven counterweight that collides with the surrounding scaffolding. A compact board with heavy objects attached is more dependable than a large platform.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Speak to Sawson. He is at the lower end of the broken elevator near the tower’s base. Listen to his explanation so the repair interaction is clearly established.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Look up towards the elevator’s upper mechanism. You will see the remaining metal section where the missing counterweight platform should be attached.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Find a flat board or suitable construction piece. Place it on the elevator’s counterweight side. A single square board is a reliable starting point.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Centre the board carefully. If it is badly offset, the platform may catch against the scaffolding. Keeping the load compact and aligned is more important than making a large structure.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Attach heavy materials. Use the nearby metal crates and other construction materials. Attach them to the board so their combined weight pulls the counterweight side down.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Watch the elevator platform. When enough weight is attached, Sawson’s platform rises. If it does not move, add another heavy object or reposition the existing load.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Speak to Sawson again. Once he reaches the upper level, he thanks Link and begins working on the tower.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Wait for the repair dialogue. Sawson discovers that the drive-assembly mechanism has become stuck because of the intense heat. He replaces the affected parts with heat-resistant components.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Collect the reward. Sawson gives Link Chilly Steamed Mushrooms for helping him repair the tower.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Enter the tower and activate the terminal. Examine the terminal to activate the Travel Point.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Use the launch platform. Step onto the glowing launch point and examine it. Link is fired into the sky, allowing the Purah Pad to scan the region.

Rewards and progression

Immediate reward

Sawson gives Link Chilly Steamed Mushrooms after the tower is repaired. This reward is thematically useful because the tower overlooks the route into the hot Gerudo Desert, although the exact number and properties of the food item should be checked against the player’s current inventory display rather than assumed from the dialogue alone.

Tower activation

The activated tower becomes a permanent Travel Point. This makes it useful as a staging area for:

Map data

The first launch updates the Purah Pad with:

The scan does not complete every point of interest in those regions. It reveals the map framework and terrain, but shrines, caves, wells, chasms and other discoveries still need to be found separately.

---

Nearby connections

These places are relevant to planning a wider Gerudo route, but they are not subareas of the tower itself.

Gerudo Canyon

Gerudo Canyon is the broad landscape surrounding the tower. It includes the canyon route and multiple other points of interest, so it should not be treated as synonymous with the tower.

Gerudo Canyon Pass

The pass is the lower route connecting the canyon system with the Gerudo Desert. It is a useful approach and departure corridor, especially for players travelling towards Kara Kara Bazaar and Gerudo Town.

Spectacle Rock

Spectacle Rock is a major desert-side landmark. The tower is described as being north-west of it, making the rock formation a useful orientation point when approaching from the Gerudo Desert.

Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower

This is a separate tower. Its name can cause confusion because both towers are associated with the Gerudo Highlands region. Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower is the southern tower near the canyon and desert approach; Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower is elsewhere in the Highlands, at Thyphlo Ruins.

Rakakudaj Shrine and “The Gerudo Canyon Crystal”

Rakakudaj Shrine is associated with a shrine quest called The Gerudo Canyon Crystal. The crystal begins near the wider Gerudo Canyon area and is connected to a location on the river, not to the Skyview Tower’s repair mechanism. The quest’s crystal is found further south near a camp established after Giro becomes lost.

Suariwak Shrine

Suariwak Shrine is another nearby Gerudo Canyon-area shrine often reached or spotted during exploration around the tower. It should be recorded as a neighbouring shrine rather than included as part of the tower facility. The available directory evidence places it near the tower area, but does not establish that it lies within the tower’s own boundary.

---

Hazards

Heat

The tower itself is in elevated canyon terrain, but routes leading south towards the Gerudo Desert can expose Link to extreme heat. The tower’s repair reward and Sawson’s warning both reinforce this environmental transition. Carry cooling meals, elixirs or suitable armour before travelling into the desert.

Falling during the launch

After activation, Link is launched high above the region. The tower’s launch is intended to be followed by a paraglider descent. Do not enter the launch platform before obtaining the paraglider.

Physics hazards

The repair puzzle uses movable objects and a counterweight. Heavy materials can roll, separate or collide with the scaffolding. Keep the construction compact and avoid attaching more pieces than necessary.

Enemies

The tower’s repair sequence is not documented as a boss encounter or a fixed combat arena. Ordinary enemies may be present along the surrounding approach, but they are not the location’s defining feature. Enemy presence can vary with progression, time and the player’s route, so this guide does not treat an unverified enemy list as a fixed tower directory.

Activities and useful exploration

Scan the region early

Activating the tower early is valuable because the launch gives a broad view of the canyon, desert edge and southern Highlands. It also provides a convenient fast-travel point before the player begins the Gerudo regional storyline.

Use the tower as a launch point

The tower can be used to glide towards:

The exact glide destination depends on stamina, height, wind and the player’s chosen route. The tower should therefore be treated as a flexible launch platform rather than a guaranteed route to one particular destination.

Return after unlocking the map

A second visit is worthwhile if the first launch was made before the map filled in nearby details. From the tower, Link can use the newly revealed terrain to mark:

Search the wider canyon separately

The tower does not contain a shop, stable or large collectible dungeon. Most of the exploration value comes from using it as a hub for the surrounding Gerudo Canyon. Keep a separate checklist for the wider canyon’s shrines, caves, wells, Korok puzzles and crystal quests rather than attributing them to the tower.

Lore and presentation

Skyview Towers are part of the new survey infrastructure established after the Upheaval. They serve a role similar to the Sheikah Towers in Breath of the Wild, but their activation method reflects the new technology of Tears of the Kingdom: Link is physically launched into the sky while the Purah Pad scans the region. The towers are described as Hudson Construction projects, explaining the presence of workers such as Sawson and the emphasis on construction materials.

Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower also demonstrates a recurring design idea in Tears of the Kingdom: the tower is not simply locked behind a key or combat challenge. Its local problem is explained by a worker, and the solution uses the same construction physics that define the game’s wider exploration system.

The tower’s heat-related malfunction connects its mechanical state to its location. Sawson’s explanation that the drive assembly has seized in the hot canyon gives the repair a local cause rather than presenting it as an arbitrary puzzle.
