About this guide
Base game guide, Tears of the Kingdom Major spoilers: This guide mentions the Death Mountain Chasm, the Yunobo of Goron City quest, Depths exploration and the Sitsum Shrine.
Overview
Mustis Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Death Mountain Depths, directly beneath the Eldin region’s Sitsum Shrine and close to the lower end of the Death Mountain Chasm. It is one of the more useful early entrances into the volcanic part of the Depths because it sits near the route used during the main quest Yunobo of Goron City.
The location itself is small. It consists primarily of the Lightroot, the immediately surrounding volcanic cavern, nearby Little Frox activity, a group of Poes towards the western edge of the illuminated area, and a Zonai Device Dispenser a short distance to the west. It should not be treated as synonymous with the entire Death Mountain Depths, the Abandoned Eldin Mine, Gorondia, or the Fire Temple. Those are neighbouring or connected destinations, not subareas of Mustis Lightroot.
Activating Mustis Lightroot provides a fast-travel point, reveals the surrounding section of the Depths map and creates a large area of light. Like other Lightroots, it also helps restore hearts damaged by Gloom while Link is within its illuminated radius.
Location and boundaries
Mustis Lightroot belongs to the Death Mountain Depths, the volcanic section of the underground world beneath Eldin. Its immediate surroundings are dark, warm and shaped by the same lava-filled geology associated with Death Mountain on the surface.
This distinction matters because the volcanic Depths around Eldin form a broad continuous region. The name “Mustis Lightroot” identifies one Lightroot and its immediate map area, not the whole underground Death Mountain complex.
The following are connected but separate places
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Death Mountain Chasm | the access point linking the surface to this part of the Depths. |
| Sitsum Shrine | the surface counterpart above Mustis Lightroot. |
| Abandoned Eldin Mine | a separate Depths location in the wider Death Mountain area. |
| Goron City | the surface settlement to the south-west. |
| Fire Temple | a separate dungeon reached later during the Death Mountain story. |
| Cugukaram Lightroot and other nearby Lightroots | neighbouring fast-travel points, not branches of Mustis Lightroot. |
Geography and atmosphere
The area around Mustis Lightroot is an open volcanic cavern rather than a built settlement. Unlike the Great Abandoned Central Mine or the Yiga-controlled Depths facilities, it has no town, named residents, permanent accommodation or conventional shop.
The terrain is dangerous mainly because of the scorching climate. A normal Flame Guard meal, elixir or piece of fire-resistant armour is not enough by itself if Link has only one level of protection. The Mustis Lightroot area requires two levels of Flame Guard to prevent environmental fire damage. This is a Depths hazard rather than ordinary surface heat, so plan equipment before descending.
The Lightroot is therefore more than a map marker. It is a safe reference point from which to plan further exploration.
Separate neighbouring locations
The available location sources identify Mustis Lightroot as being beneath Death Mountain Chasm and within Death Mountain Depths, but they do not provide a complete official boundary polygon for the surrounding illuminated region. The boundary used here follows the named-location convention: the Lightroot and its immediate local encounters, while excluding separate mines, dungeons and settlements.

Reaching Mustis Lightroot
Route 1: Death Mountain Chasm
The most direct route is through Death Mountain Chasm. During the main quest Yunobo of Goron City, Link descends into this part of the Depths and can encounter Mustis Lightroot along the early volcanic route. Zelda Dungeon’s location entry specifically associates the Lightroot with the descent through Death Mountain Chasm during that quest.
This is the best route for a first visit because it follows the natural progression of the Eldin main quest.
Route 2: Travel from another Depths Lightroot
Once activated, Mustis Lightroot becomes a fast-travel destination. You can then use it to reach the wider Death Mountain Depths without repeatedly crossing the surface or re-entering the chasm.
Route 3: Surface-to-Depths navigation
Because Lightroots correspond to surface Shrines, Sitsum Shrine is the most useful surface reference. If you have activated the shrine but not the Lightroot, compare the two map layers and descend through the nearest available chasm. Lightroots are generally positioned beneath their surface Shrine counterparts, and the reversed naming makes the relationship easy to confirm.

Route 1: Death Mountain Chasm: Recommended preparation
- 01Obtain two levels of Flame Guard.
- 02Carry Brightbloom Seeds, especially if you are entering before the Lightroot is visible.
- 03Bring a sturdy weapon or a few spare weapons for Depths enemies.
- 04Mark the entrance on the map if you intend to return to the Abandoned Eldin Mine or Fire Temple route.
- 05Activate Mustis Lightroot as soon as you reach it.
Mustis Lightroot itself
The map illumination is especially valuable here because volcanic Depths terrain can make ordinary Brightbloom exploration expensive and disorientating. Activate the root before heading west towards the Device Dispenser or searching for the Poe group.
Activation walkthrough
There is no puzzle associated with activating Mustis Lightroot. The challenge is reaching it safely through the heat, darkness and underground terrain.
---
Activating the Lightroot has three main effects
- 01It reveals the surrounding map.
- 02It creates a permanent fast-travel point.
- 03It provides a large local light source and restores the ability to recover hearts damaged by Gloom while Link is nearby.
Activation walkthrough
- 01Enter the Death Mountain Depths through Death Mountain Chasm or travel to the area from another activated Lightroot.
- 02Equip two levels of Flame Guard before crossing the volcanic terrain.
- 03Use Brightbloom Seeds to identify the root if the area is still dark.
- 04Approach the glowing root and interact with it.
- 05Open the map to confirm that the surrounding Death Mountain Depths have been revealed.
- 06Use the new fast-travel point as a base for the western Device Dispenser and nearby collectibles.
Sitsum Shrine: the surface counterpart
Mustis Lightroot corresponds to Sitsum Shrine on the surface. The two locations share the same horizontal map position, although their vertical coordinates differ because one is in the sky or surface world and the other is deep underground.
Sitsum Shrine is a Shrine of Light with the puzzle title “A Controlling Device”. It is not part of Mustis Lightroot, but it is the most important connected surface location and a useful landmark for navigation.
Named directory: surface counterpart
The Shrine and Lightroot form a useful paired route:

Zonai Device Dispenser
A Zonai Device Dispenser is located to the west of Mustis Lightroot. Published listings place it at approximately 2186, 2634, -0962, while another map source gives a very similar position around 2191, 2641, -0963.
This is one of only a small number of Device Dispensers found in the Depths. Its available device types are:
The dispenser is particularly useful in the Death Mountain area because the terrain often rewards vehicle construction. A Big Wheel build can cross rough ground more effectively than ordinary walking, while a Steering Stick makes it easier to control a vehicle through cavern passages. Batteries are valuable if you are travelling long distances or building a machine to cross hazardous volcanic ground.
The Device Dispenser is a functional facility, not a shop. It does not sell devices for rupees. Instead, Link inserts Zonai Charges or suitable Zonai materials and receives a random selection of capsules. The exact number and quality of the capsules depend on what is deposited, so the table above describes the dispenser’s available device types, not a guaranteed result from one use.
Device Dispenser directory
Game8 and Zelda Dungeon independently list the same four device types for the dispenser west of Mustis Lightroot.

Zonai Device Dispenser
| Device | Practical use |
|---|---|
| Big Wheel | Strong ground vehicles, heavy pushing and climbing builds |
| Steering Stick | Direct control for compatible vehicles |
| Portable Pot | Temporary cooking pot for preparing meals |
| Battery | Extends the operating time of Zonai devices |
Enemies
Little Frox
The verified enemy associated with Mustis Lightroot is the Little Frox. These small Depths monsters can be easy to overlook in the darkness, especially when approaching the Lightroot or travelling west towards the Device Dispenser.
Little Frox are not a named boss encounter and do not trigger a major progression event. Their presence is ordinary local enemy activity rather than a fixed story battle. Because underground enemy layouts can be affected by normal world-state changes and revisits, do not assume that every encounter will remain in exactly the same position after a Blood Moon or after leaving and returning.
Enemy directory
No named boss or dungeon boss is recorded as part of Mustis Lightroot proper. The Fire Temple has its own separate dungeon encounters and should not be folded into this location.

Items and collectibles
Poes
A group of 10 Poes can be collected towards the western edge of the Lightroot’s local area. The location entry describes these Poes as being at the western edge of the illuminated region.
Poes are floating blue spirits found throughout the Depths. Collecting them is useful because they can later be exchanged with Bargainer Statues for Depths-related items and equipment. The western group is therefore worth collecting even if you are only passing through for the Device Dispenser.
The source material confirms the group of 10, but does not provide a reliable individual coordinate for every Poe. Their exact positions should therefore be located visually within the western part of the revealed area rather than assigned invented coordinates.
Fixed and variable content
No unique weapon, armour piece, treasure chest or shrine chest is confirmed by the consulted sources as belonging to Mustis Lightroot itself. The guide therefore does not assign one to the location.

Fixed and variable content
| Content | Status |
|---|---|
| Mustis Lightroot | Fixed |
| Sitsum Shrine counterpart | Fixed |
| Device Dispenser | Fixed |
| Device types available | Fixed list, random capsule output |
| Little Frox | Local enemy encounters |
| Western Poe group | Fixed collectible group, with individual positions not separately sourced here |
| Brightbloom and ordinary materials | General Depths resources, not uniquely verified for this location |
Main quest and progression
Mustis Lightroot is connected with the Yunobo of Goron City questline because the route through Death Mountain Chasm leads into this volcanic section of the Depths. It is not, however, a quest-only location. Once the area is accessible, Link can return at any time and use the Lightroot independently of the main quest.
Before visiting Death Mountain
The area may be difficult to reach safely because of the scorching climate. Without two levels of Flame Guard, Link will take environmental damage while travelling through the volcanic Depths.
During Yunobo of Goron City
This is the most natural first visit. The descent through Death Mountain Chasm leads Link towards the Lightroot and the wider Eldin Depths. Activate it before continuing so that a death or fast-travel detour does not force you to repeat the descent.
After the Fire Temple
Mustis Lightroot remains useful after the Eldin main quest. The area does not become a mission-only zone, and the Lightroot, Device Dispenser and Poes remain available for exploration.
After completing the main story
The base-game location remains accessible. Nothing in the consulted sources indicates a missability trigger for Mustis Lightroot, its Device Dispenser or its western Poe group.

Lore and naming
The name Mustis is an anadrome of Sitsum, the name of its surface Shrine counterpart. This is part of the wider naming pattern used for Lightroots in Tears of the Kingdom: most Lightroot names are the names of their corresponding surface Shrines written backwards.
The Lightroot itself does not have a separate cast of named residents, political faction or historical quest narrative. Its significance is primarily geographical and mechanical. It is a piece of the underground network of glowing roots that reveals the Depths, provides safe travel points and links the underground map to the Shrine layout above.
