Overview
An Upright Device The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Base game
Makasura Shrine is a Shrine of Light on a raised cliff beside Kakariko Village in West Necluda. Its trial, An Upright Device, introduces the practical use of the Stabilizer, a Zonai Device that forces an attached structure to stand upright. The shrine combines Ascend, Ultrahand, gliding and controlled launching, making it a useful early lesson in how Zonai devices can turn simple platforms into ramps, bridges and catapults.
The shrine itself is a compact interior challenge. It does not include Kakariko Village, the surrounding roads, the Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower or the nearby Depths in its boundaries. Those are neighbouring locations and useful access points, but they are separate entries.
Location and boundaries
Makasura Shrine stands on a cliff overlooking Kakariko Village. It is close enough to the village that the settlement is the most useful landmark, but the shrine is not a subarea of the village in the sense of containing its houses, residents or shops. The shrine entrance, its interior trial rooms and the immediate approach form the practical scope of this guide.
The wider setting is West Necluda, a region that includes Kakariko Village, the surrounding hills and roads, Sahasra Slope and the approaches towards the Dueling Peaks. The shrine is also associated vertically with the Arusakam Lightroot in the Depths, as is typical of many surface Shrines of Light. The Lightroot is a separate location and is not part of Makasura Shrine itself.

Reaching Makasura Shrine
From Kakariko Village
The simplest route is to leave Kakariko Village and follow the nearby path towards the shrine’s cliff. Look for the green shrine glow above the settlement. The entrance is outdoors and visible from the surrounding slopes, so there is no separate shrine quest or hidden activation puzzle required to open it.
The shrine is close to the village’s southern side, although some map descriptions place it on the western outskirts because of the way the cliff and path curve around the settlement. The important practical landmark is Kakariko Village itself rather than a precise compass direction.
From Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower
Sahasra Skyview Tower is a convenient launch point if the shrine has not yet been discovered. Launch from the tower and glide towards Kakariko Village, then adjust towards the glowing shrine on the nearby high ground. This route is particularly useful early in the game because the tower provides altitude without requiring a long climb.
From the surrounding roads
The shrine is beside the local route around Kakariko Village and can be reached on foot from the surrounding West Necluda paths. There is no special weather requirement, quest state or equipment requirement to enter it.
Fast travel
Once activated, Makasura Shrine becomes a permanent fast-travel point. If you only activate the entrance and leave, it can still serve as a travel marker, but completing the interior trial is required to receive the Light of Blessing.

Shrine layout and puzzle logic
A Stabilizer is normally attached to a platform in a horizontal position. When struck or activated, it rapidly rights the platform so that it stands vertically. This makes it useful for raising ramps, creating temporary walls and throwing objects or Link across gaps.
The shrine is not a combat challenge. There are no shrine enemies or boss encounters, and failure generally costs only time. If a platform ends up in an awkward position, it can usually be moved again with Ultrahand or reset by leaving and re-entering the room.
---
Makasura is built around a repeated idea
- 01Find or move a metal platform.
- 02Use Ultrahand to position it.
- 03Activate the attached Stabilizer.
- 04Let the platform stand upright.
- 05Use the new vertical surface to climb, Ascend or launch yourself.
1. Reach the first upper platform
Enter the shrine and move towards the raised ledge ahead. The first section is deliberately straightforward and teaches that Ascend can bypass a low obstacle.
This opening section requires no device manipulation. It establishes the vertical movement pattern that the rest of the shrine uses.
1. Reach the first upper platform: steps
- 01Walk beneath the raised platform or ledge.
- 02Use Ascend.
- 03Emerge on the higher level.
2. Raise the first Stabilizer platform
In the next room, you will find a flat platform with a Stabilizer attached.
The important point is to position the platform before activating it. Once upright, it acts like a tall board or temporary wall. If it is too far from the ledge, Link may not be able to reach the top comfortably.
The Paraglider is needed for the gap. A normal jump is not enough to cross reliably.
2. Raise the first Stabilizer platform: steps
- 01Use Ultrahand to pick up the entire platform.
- 02Move it near the ledge or wall ahead.
- 03Strike the Stabilizer with a weapon, arrow or other suitable attack.
- 04The platform will rise into an upright position.
- 05Climb or Ascend onto it.
- 06Glide across the gap to the next area.
3. Use the second upright platform as a wall
The following room repeats the same device lesson but gives the platform a more specific role.
The platform does not need to be perfectly aligned. It only needs to provide a climbable route to the upper surface. If the base is slightly misplaced, reposition it before activating the device.
Practical tip
Do not immediately drop down after reaching the wall. The optional treasure chest is accessed from this section, and collecting it now is easier than attempting to reconstruct the arrangement later.
---
3. Use the second upright platform as a wall: steps
- 01Pick up the second Stabilizer platform with Ultrahand.
- 02Move it towards the wall or raised structure on the left.
- 03Activate the Stabilizer.
- 04Wait for the platform to stand upright.
- 05Use it to reach the top of the adjacent wall.
4. Optional chest: Fairy Tonic
The treasure chest is positioned across the gap on the far side of the room. It contains a Fairy Tonic.
Some walkthroughs describe this as pulling the platform up so that it rests on the wall. The exact placement is flexible, so the key is simply to create a safe route across. You do not need to preserve the platform’s original position.
A Fairy Tonic restores health when used. Its presence is fixed, not a random drop.
---
To reach it
- 01Stand on top of the wall you climbed.
- 02Use Ultrahand to grab the upright Stabilizer platform.
- 03Lift or reposition it so that it reaches towards the chest’s side of the room.
- 04Use the platform as a bridge or raised stepping surface.
- 05Glide across if necessary.
- 06Open the chest and collect the Fairy Tonic.
5. Send the ball over the wall
After collecting the chest, drop to the lower part of the room. Here you will find a ball, a bowl-like receptacle and another Stabilizer-based apparatus.
The purpose of this section is to throw the ball over the wall so that it can reach a socket on the other side.
The platform will snap upright and fling the ball over the wall. This is the shrine’s first clear demonstration of the Stabilizer as a launching device rather than merely a climbing aid.
If the ball flies in the wrong direction, retrieve it and adjust the entire assembly. The ball is not consumed, and there is no penalty for trying again.
Once the ball lands beyond the wall, it should enter the nearby receptacle or opening. This opens the gate leading to the final area.
---
5. Send the ball over the wall: steps
- 01Pick up the ball with Ultrahand.
- 02Place it into the bowl attached to the platform.
- 03Position the Stabilizer beneath the platform, keeping the device in the intended orientation.
- 04Make sure the bowl faces towards the wall and the area beyond it.
- 05Activate the Stabilizer.
6. Operate the final catapult
The last room contains another platform with a bowl and a Stabilizer. This is the shrine’s final challenge and the most important lesson in the trial.
A common mistake is to place the catapult too far from the gap or angle it away from the exit. The platform does not need to touch the edge, but it must be aimed towards the landing area. If Link is launched short, move the assembly closer or adjust its angle.
You can activate the device with an arrow from inside the bowl if striking it directly would risk knocking Link out of position. Nintendo Life specifically notes that the shrine uses Ascend, Ultrahand and a single arrow as part of its intended solution, although other activation methods can also work.
---
6. Operate the final catapult: steps
- 01Bring the final platform close to the gap leading to the exit.
- 02Attach or position the Stabilizer so the platform will stand upright.
- 03Place the bowl so that it faces towards the exit platform.
- 04Step into the bowl.
- 05Activate the Stabilizer with an arrow, thrown weapon or direct strike.
- 06The platform will right itself and launch Link across the gap.
- 07Glide or land on the far side.
- 08Examine the green shrine terminal and collect the Light of Blessing.
Treasure chest
The Fairy Tonic is optional. It is not required to open the final gate or complete the shrine. If you leave without opening the chest, you can normally return through the completed shrine and collect it later.
Treasure chest
| Item | Location | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Fairy Tonic | Second major puzzle room, across the gap near the upright platform | Fixed chest |
Shrine completion reward
The Light of Blessing contributes towards health or stamina upgrades at a Goddess Statue. Four Lights of Blessing can be exchanged for one upgrade. The shrine also becomes a fast-travel destination after activation and completion.

Immediate neighbouring locations
Depths counterpart
Kakariko Village, Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower and Arusakam Lightroot are neighbouring or counterpart locations rather than internal parts of the shrine. They are included here because they are the principal navigation references and map associations used when finding Makasura Shrine.

Stabilizer
The Stabilizer is the defining device of Makasura Shrine. When attached to a platform and activated, it causes the platform to stand upright. In the shrine, this produces three main functions:
The device is particularly useful in the open world when building vehicles, lifting platforms or making simple launch mechanisms. Makasura Shrine is therefore valuable even after its reward has been collected because it provides a safe environment for learning the device’s timing and positioning.
Ultrahand
Ultrahand is used to move complete platform assemblies, not just small objects. The shrine expects the player to manipulate the device and its attached board as one object. If you detach the Stabilizer accidentally, you may need to recreate the intended arrangement before continuing.
Ascend
Ascend is used at the start and throughout the middle section to bypass low ceilings, reach wall tops and gain height without climbing every surface manually.
Paraglider
The Paraglider is needed to cross the shrine’s gaps. Makasura Shrine is therefore most naturally attempted after the Great Sky Island opening sequence, when Link has obtained the Paraglider during the early main story.

Before leaving, check that you have
---
For a clean first visit
- 01Locate the shrine on the cliff near Kakariko Village.
- 02Activate the entrance if you want an immediate fast-travel point.
- 03Enter and use Ascend on the first ledge.
- 04Raise the first Stabilizer platform.
- 05Glide across the first gap.
- 06Raise the second platform beside the wall.
- 07Reach the top of the wall.
- 08Collect the Fairy Tonic before dropping down.
- 09Put the ball in the bowl.
- 10Activate the Stabilizer to throw the ball over the wall.
- 11Open the gate.
- 12Build the final launch platform.
- 13Launch Link across the final gap.
- 14Collect the Light of Blessing.
Activating the platform too early
If you activate a Stabilizer before moving the platform into position, it may stand somewhere useless. Pick up and reposition the entire assembly before striking the device.
Losing the ball
The ball can bounce into awkward corners if the launch angle is poor. Use Ultrahand to retrieve it rather than trying to carry it manually. The puzzle can be reset by moving the platform and trying again.
Missing the chest
The chest is not on the critical route. Players who solve the ball puzzle immediately can easily overlook it. Search the upper wall section before launching the ball onwards.
Falling short of the final platform
Move the final catapult closer to the gap and aim the bowl more directly at the landing area. Link’s launch distance depends on the platform’s position and orientation.
Treating the shrine as a combat challenge
There are no enemies to defeat. Weapons are mainly useful for activating Stabilizers, and a bow is a convenient way to trigger the final mechanism without disturbing Link’s position.
---
Makasura Shrine belongs to the Shrine of Light network introduced in Tears of the Kingdom. Its location near Kakariko Village places it in a region strongly associated with the Sheikah and with the village’s continuing role in Hyrule’s post-Calamity recovery. However, the shrine itself does not contain a story scene, named resident or quest-specific dialogue.
Its design is technological rather than historical in presentation. The trial uses Zonai machinery to teach a physical principle: a small device can control the orientation and movement of a much larger structure. The shrine’s title, An Upright Device, directly describes the central action rather than hiding the solution behind a symbolic clue.
The surface location also has a useful Depths relationship. Arusakam Lightroot is the corresponding underground Lightroot associated with the shrine’s position. The two are separate map locations, but the alignment is useful when exploring the Depths: surface Shrine positions can help players identify nearby Lightroots, and vice versa.

Is Makasura Shrine in Kakariko Village?
It is beside and overlooking Kakariko Village, in the surrounding West Necluda terrain. The village is the nearest major landmark, but the shrine’s interior is a separate location.
Do I need to complete a quest first?
No separate shrine quest is required. You can reach and enter Makasura Shrine directly.
What abilities are required?
The intended solution uses Ascend, Ultrahand and the Paraglider. A bow or another attack method is useful for activating Stabilizers, especially during the final launch.
What is inside the chest?
The optional chest contains a Fairy Tonic.
Is there a boss?
No. Makasura Shrine has no boss and no combat trial.
Can I leave after opening the chest?
Yes. The shrine can be exited and revisited. The chest remains available until opened, while the shrine’s completion state and fast-travel function are retained.
What does the Stabilizer do outside the shrine?
It causes an attached platform or structure to stand upright when activated. The shrine demonstrates how this can be used to create vertical supports, raised ramps and launchers.
