Introduction

Hateno Village is one of the most useful and story-rich settlements in Tears of the Kingdom. It lies in East Necluda, on the eastern side of Hyrule, and is reached by following the roads south-east from Kakariko Village or north-east from the Necluda coast. In contrast to the military focus of Lookout Landing or the regional identity of places such as Rito Village and Goron City, Hateno combines farming, dairy production, clothing, research and local politics.

The village has changed considerably since Breath of the Wild. It is still surrounded by fields, forests and steep green hills, but Cece’s arrival has turned it into a fashion destination. Her boutique, mushroom-themed clothing and political ambitions have divided the villagers, producing one of the game’s most substantial local quest chains. Hateno also becomes the base for Robbie’s later Purah Pad research, including the Shrine Sensor, Travel Medallion, Hero’s Path Mode and Sensor + upgrades.

The village itself should be distinguished from the wider Hateno area. Hateno Ancient Tech Lab stands on the high eastern outskirts, while Hateno Pasture, Zelda’s house and nearby wells and caves are connected to the settlement but are not interchangeable with the village’s central streets. The guide therefore treats the settlement, its immediately connected outskirts and its associated research site separately.

Hateno Village

The central village contains the majority of residences, public buildings and shops. It is the correct area for the mayoral-election storyline, school activities, boutique-related quests and most ordinary conversations.

Named places within the village

Some of these names describe a functional location, while others are map or environmental landmarks. Zelda’s House is a private residence with story material rather than a general-purpose shop or public facility.

Named places within the village

Hateno Ancient Tech Lab

The Hateno Ancient Tech Lab sits above the eastern edge of the village. It is the home of Robbie’s research operations in Tears of the Kingdom. The building’s role is not simply decorative: it is the destination for a sequence of Purah Pad upgrades and for the compendium-related Filling Out the Compendium side adventure.

The lab is reached by following the uphill road out of the village. Once the associated quest has progressed, it also becomes a convenient fast-travel destination through the shrine located in the cave below it.

Named places connected with the lab

The lab and Mayahisik Shrine should not be merged with Zanmik Shrine. Zanmik is the village shrine; Mayahisik is the hidden shrine in the cave below the lab.

---

Named places connected with the lab

From Lookout Landing

The most direct broad route is east and south-east through Hyrule Field and Necluda. This is a long journey if undertaken immediately after leaving the Great Sky Island, but it is entirely possible once Link can travel freely on the surface.

From Kakariko Village

Kakariko is the most natural northern connection. Follow the road south-east through the hills. This route is useful if you are already investigating the Ring Ruins or travelling between the two villages.

From the Necluda coast

Hateno can be approached from the south-east through the coastal and forest roads. This route connects naturally with Lurelin Village and the wider East Necluda region, though the terrain becomes more uneven near the coast.

From the nearest shrine

Zanmik Shrine provides the simplest arrival point for the central settlement. For the Ancient Tech Lab, use the road that climbs east from the village. If Mayahisik Shrine has been activated, it is normally the most convenient travel point for Robbie’s lab.

Practical arrival route

---

Practical arrival route

  1. 01
    Travel to Zanmik Shrine.
  2. 02
Activate the shrine if it has not already been completed.
  3. 03
Visit East Wind and the inn to establish the village’s services.
  4. 04
Walk through the central streets and speak to villagers involved in the election storyline.
  5. 05
Visit the school and the boutique.
  6. 06
Continue uphill towards Hateno Pasture and the Ancient Tech Lab.
  7. 07
Search the slope below the lab for Retsam Forest Cave if Robbie’s Shrine Sensor points towards it.

East Wind

East Wind is Hateno Village’s general shop. It sells a mixture of staple ingredients and local produce rather than weapons or armour. Its inventory includes Hylian Rice, Swift Carrots, Hylian Tomatoes, Bird Eggs, Hateno Cheese, Fresh Milk, arrows, Hylian Shrooms, Sun Pumpkins, Fortified Pumpkins and Goat Butter. Stock and availability should be checked in-game, particularly after story progression.

Hateno Cheese is especially significant because it is tied to the village’s food economy and later cooking-related activities. The shop is also a convenient source of ingredients for Hateno’s local quests.

Service status: functional shop.

Ventest Clothing Boutique

Ventest Clothing Boutique is Cece’s shop and the visual centre of Hateno’s fashion movement. Its name and role continue the boutique tradition established in Breath of the Wild, but Cece’s influence is much stronger in this game.

The shop sells several clothing items, including Hylian clothing and, later, the expensive Royal Guard set. It is also the setting for much of Cece’s storyline.

Service status: functional clothing shop.

Kochi Dye Shop

Kochi Dye Shop provides the standard dyeing service. Link can recolour compatible armour and certain paraglider fabrics by speaking to the shop’s attendant and supplying the required materials and rupees.

Kochi Dye Shop is not the same business as Ventest Clothing Boutique. The boutique sells clothing; Kochi Dye Shop alters colours and handles dye-related services.

Service status: functional dye shop.

The Great Ton Pu Inn

The Great Ton Pu Inn offers beds and the usual inn service. A normal bed costs less, while the more expensive soft bed provides a temporary bonus in addition to restoring Link’s health.

The inn is also a useful place to advance the time of day. This matters because several Hateno NPCs follow schedules, and some clues in the election storyline are easier to discover at night.

Service status: functional inn.

Hateno Pasture

Hateno Pasture is an agricultural and dairy facility on the road towards the Ancient Tech Lab. It is associated with Dantz and is important for the village’s food economy.

The pasture is not a standard general shop in the same sense as East Wind. Its most notable role is connected with Hateno Cheese and related quests.

Service status: farm and dairy facility; quest-related access and rewards.

Hateno School

Hateno School is one of the settlement’s newer institutions and is run by Symin. It provides a group of educational side quests that show how Hyrule’s communities are adapting after the events of Breath of the Wild.

The school quests are worthwhile even when their rewards are modest because they provide local context, introduce pupils and teachers, and expand the village beyond its shops and election politics.

Service status: quest and activity location.

Ordinary residents

The village also includes unnamed guards, children, shop attendants, travellers and villagers whose dialogue changes during the election. Some NPCs are easy to miss because they move between houses, farms and the road to the lab. A full NPC census is difficult to separate from temporary visitors and schedule-based characters, so the list above should be treated as a verified named directory rather than a claim that every unnamed inhabitant has been catalogued.

The Japanese location guide identifies the school, individual residences, boutique, inn, pasture, general shop, dye shop and Zelda’s House as distinct buildings, which supports treating Hateno as a broad settlement with multiple residential clusters rather than a single central street.

---

The mayoral election

Hateno’s central conflict is not a monster invasion but a disagreement about the village’s future.

Cece represents fashion, commercial attention and rapid change. Reede represents Hateno’s agricultural traditions and established identity. The argument is deliberately more complicated than a simple good-versus-bad conflict. Cece’s style brings visitors and new trade, while Reede’s concern for farming and local stability is also reasonable.

The election storyline is represented by the following connected quests:

Different villagers support different candidates, and several quests require Link to investigate rather than simply deliver an item. The storyline’s final outcome does not remove Hateno’s agricultural identity. Instead, it presents a compromise between innovation and tradition.

The election adventure is listed as requiring the other relevant Hateno quests before it can be completed.

Hateno Village Research Lab

Quest giver: Robbie Starting point: Lookout Landing Destination: Hateno Ancient Tech Lab Reward: Shrine Sensor for the Purah Pad

This side adventure becomes available after Link has progressed through the Depths storyline, including A Mystery in the Depths, and has obtained Autobuild. Robbie then asks Link to meet him at the Hateno lab.

Walkthrough

The quest is unusual because the sensor’s target is very close to the lab but hidden below the hill. Robbie initially restricts Link’s movement inside the building while the device is being tested, so follow the signal towards the window and then leave when the objective updates.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Complete the required Depths progression and repair Robbie’s hot-air balloon.
  2. 02
Speak to Robbie again at Lookout Landing.
  3. 03
Travel to Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.
  4. 04
Allow Robbie to install the Shrine Sensor.
  5. 05
Follow the sensor’s signal towards the cave below the lab.
  6. 06
    Enter Retsam Forest Cave.
  7. 07
    Complete or discover Mayahisik Shrine.
  8. 08
    Return to Robbie.

Purah Pad upgrades

After the Shrine Sensor quest, Robbie offers further upgrades:

The upgrades have separate requirements and are not all unlocked merely by arriving at the lab. The Travel Medallion expands fast-travel flexibility, Hero’s Path Mode records explored routes on the map, and Sensor + allows the sensor to target registered objects rather than only shrines. The compendium quest is connected with Robbie’s photography and database work.

A Letter to Koyin

This side adventure begins with Koyin near the water outside the village. It involves recovering a message in a bottle and helping her complete a personal task. The quest is a small but memorable example of Hateno’s location design: the village’s activities extend into its ponds and fields rather than ending at the shops.

The school quests

Hateno School provides several smaller quests involving Symin, the pupils and lessons about Hyrule. These missions reward exploration and local ingredients rather than combat skill. They are easy to postpone, but completing them helps reveal how ordinary families and children understand the world after the upheavals of the previous game.

Reede’s Secret

Reede’s storyline is tied to his private work and the tension between his public role as mayor and his personal concerns for Hateno’s future. Follow his schedule, particularly at night, if he is not where expected.

The quest eventually leads to the Homegrown in Hateno side quest after the election storyline has been completed. This later activity concerns Reede’s pumpkin production and rewards Link with access to Sun Pumpkins, making it one of the village’s most useful post-election developments.

Cece’s Secret

Cece’s private routine can be observed after dark. Sophie provides the key lead, and Link must follow Cece rather than confronting her during the day.

Completing the quest rewards the Cece Hat and advances the larger election storyline. It also reveals that Cece’s public fashion persona does not tell the whole story.

A New Signature Food

This quest develops Hateno’s local cuisine and food trade. Hateno Cheese is central to the village’s identity here, and ingredients can be obtained from local shops and farms.

Keep at least one piece of Hateno Cheese and a selection of mushrooms and vegetables before cooking through the quest. The exact recipe and quest dialogue should be followed from the objective text, as the game’s requirements are more specific than simply cooking any dairy-based dish.

Zelda’s House and Zelda’s Well

Zelda’s House is a significant story location rather than a normal shop or inn. Investigating it can reveal journals and clues about Zelda’s activities after Breath of the Wild. Zelda’s Well, associated with the property, contains additional environmental storytelling and items.

These locations can be visited before or after the main story. Their importance is primarily narrative, and they should not be treated as ordinary public facilities.

---

Zanmik Shrine

Zanmik Shrine is the main shrine in Hateno Village. Its challenge is titled Scoop It Out. It uses water, electricity and moving mechanisms, making it a useful early demonstration of the game’s physics-based shrine design.

Because the shrine is in the village itself, it is worth activating immediately even if you do not complete the puzzle at once.

Mayahisik Shrine

Mayahisik Shrine is a hidden shrine in Retsam Forest Cave beneath the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. It is a Rauru’s Blessing shrine, so the main challenge is finding and entering the cave rather than solving a shrine interior puzzle.

Its treasure includes a Magic Scepter. The shrine is also the practical objective of Hateno Village Research Lab, where Robbie uses the Shrine Sensor to guide Link to the cave.

Finding Mayahisik Shrine

If the shrine has already been discovered, the research quest can skip the discovery portion and proceed to Robbie’s conclusion.

Finding Mayahisik Shrine

  1. 01
Stand near Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.
  2. 02
Descend the slope below the laboratory.
  3. 03
Look for the cave entrance in the rock face.
  4. 04
Use a Bomb Flower or another suitable method to clear the blocked entrance.
  5. 05
    Enter Retsam Forest Cave.
  6. 06
Follow the passage to Mayahisik Shrine.

Wells and caves

Hateno’s wells are easy to overlook because the settlement is built vertically. Check below houses, near fences and around Zelda’s property. These locations may contain:

Retsam Forest Cave is the most important cave associated with the lab, but the surrounding hills also contain smaller exploration points and Korok puzzles.

Korok Seeds

The wider Hateno area contains Korok puzzles on roads, hills, bridges and around trees. They are distributed across the village’s outskirts rather than concentrated in one collection point.

Because Korok placements are map-dependent collectibles rather than named village institutions, they are best checked against an interactive map rather than listed as if they were permanent businesses or NPCs.

---

Hateno Village itself is comparatively safe. It has no dungeon boss, overworld boss or permanent hostile faction controlling the settlement.

The main hazards are found outside the populated streets:

The Ancient Tech Lab route is not dangerous in the same way as a monster camp, but it is exposed and can be inconvenient to climb without stamina, a horse or a suitable route. The cave below the lab is more important for exploration than for combat.

Materials and shopping checklist

Do not spend all your Hateno Cheese immediately if you are working through local food quests.

---

Hateno changes in several stages depending on Link’s progress.

The village does not become inaccessible if quests are delayed. However, NPCs may move, hide indoors or follow different routines depending on the time of day and the current quest step. The main practical miss is not permanent loss but failure to notice a character’s changed location.

---

Hateno first appeared in Breath of the Wild as a quiet farming settlement. In Tears of the Kingdom, it retains that role while developing a new public identity through Cece’s fashion business. This makes it one of the clearest examples of continuity between the two games: the physical village remains recognisable, but its economy and social tensions have changed.

The settlement also shows the limits of technological continuity. The Ancient Tech Lab still operates, yet the research focus has shifted from Sheikah Slate upgrades and ancient Guardian technology towards Purah Pad functions, surveying and the investigation of the Depths. Robbie and Purah’s work provides a bridge between the two games while also showing that Hyrule’s researchers are adapting to a new technological era.

Hateno’s fashion boom is also deliberately contrasted with its food production. Cece’s mushrooms and boutique attract attention, while Reede’s fields, Dantz’s pasture and Hateno Cheese preserve the village’s older agricultural identity. The mayoral election is therefore a small-scale story about modernisation, local control and the value of tradition.

Is Hateno Village the same as Hateno Ancient Tech Lab?

No. The lab is an associated research outpost on the eastern hillside above the village. It has its own interior, quest chain and nearby shrine.

Which shrine is in Hateno Village?

Zanmik Shrine is the village shrine. Mayahisik Shrine is nearby but hidden in Retsam Forest Cave below the Ancient Tech Lab.

How do I unlock Robbie’s upgrades?

Progress through the Depths storyline, obtain Autobuild and complete Hateno Village Research Lab. Robbie then offers additional research quests for the Travel Medallion, Hero’s Path Mode, Sensor + and compendium functions.

Why is Robbie not at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab?

He remains at Lookout Landing until the required Depths progression has been completed and the research quest has been triggered. Check that A Mystery in the Depths and the associated Autobuild progression are finished.

How do I complete the mayoral election?

Complete Cece’s Secret, Reede’s Secret, Team Cece or Team Reede? and A New Signature Food, then return to the relevant characters for The Mayoral Election.

Where do I get Sun Pumpkins?

Complete the relevant Hateno storyline and then begin Homegrown in Hateno with Reede. The quest becomes available after the mayoral-election progression and leads to the village’s Sun Pumpkin activity.

Is there a stable in Hateno Village?

Hateno has Hateno Pasture, but it is not presented as a full standard stable in the same way as Hyrule’s dedicated roadside stables. Do not assume that a pasture offers all stable services.
