Key takeaways

  • Usukaz Lightroot is in the Depths beneath the Mount Lanayru and Naydra Snowfield vicinity.
  • Its surface counterpart is Zakusu Shrine, the shrine for the Proving Grounds Ascension challenge.
  • The nearest major Depths landmark is the Wellspring of Wisdom, including its Bargainer Statue.
  • A Flux Construct II arena lies north of the Lightroot.
  • Activating the root lights the surrounding Depths map and provides a permanent fast-travel point.
  • The Lightroot is not the same place as the Wellspring of Wisdom, Zakusu Shrine, Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower or the Naydra Snowfield Chasm. These are neighbouring or connected landmarks, not subareas of Usukaz Lightroot.

About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Depths, the Wellspring of Wisdom area, the paired Zakusu Shrine and a nearby Flux Construct II.

Introduction

Usukaz Lightroot is a fast-travel and map-unlocking point in the Lanayru region of the Depths. It lies beneath the Mount Lanayru and Naydra Snowfield area, at approximately 3525, -1482, -0612, with some map references placing the root slightly lower at around -0633 because of differing coordinate readings and guide-map precision. Its surface counterpart is Zakusu Shrine, whose horizontal coordinates are effectively the same.

The Lightroot itself is a small landmark rather than a broad named region. It does not contain a settlement, shop, quest-giver or dungeon. Its importance comes from what it connects: the surrounding Depths map, the Wellspring of Wisdom area, a nearby Bargainer Statue and a Flux Construct II arena to the north.

Location and boundaries

Usukaz Lightroot is a single Lightroot installation in the central-eastern Lanayru Depths. It should not be treated as the name of the entire underground area beneath Mount Lanayru. The surrounding region includes separate named places, most notably the Wellspring of Wisdom, the Wellspring of Wisdom Bargainer Statue and the nearby Flux Construct II arena.

The root is positioned southwest of the Wellspring of Wisdom. One guide lists Usukaz Lightroot at 3525, -1482, -0612 and describes it as southwest of the Wellspring, while another lists a close value of 3525, -1482, -0633. The difference is best understood as a variation in the recorded vertical coordinate rather than a separate Lightroot.

As with other Lightroots, the important map relationship is horizontal. Usukaz’s X and Y coordinates correspond to Zakusu Shrine on the surface, making the shrine a useful visual and navigational reference. The two names are also a deliberate reversal of one another: Zakusu becomes Usukaz when read backwards.

Nearby but separate

These places are useful when navigating to or from Usukaz, but they are not subareas contained within the Lightroot.

Functions of the Lightroot

Interact with the glowing root to activate it. This produces three practical benefits:

Lightroots do not function as shops, healing stations or storage facilities. There is no evidence of a resident or ordinary NPC stationed at Usukaz itself.

Functions of the Lightroot: steps

  1. 01
It illuminates part of the Depths map. The surrounding darkness is removed from the map, revealing local terrain and routes.

Functions of the Lightroot: steps

  1. 01
It becomes a fast-travel point. Once activated, Link can return to Usukaz Lightroot from the map, provided fast travel is available.

Functions of the Lightroot: steps

  1. 01
It helps identify the corresponding surface shrine. Because Usukaz and Zakusu occupy matching horizontal coordinates, the Depths map can be compared with the surface map to find the shrine.

Access and routes

From the surface

The most direct approach is through the Naydra Snowfield Chasm, west of Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower. The chasm is not directly part of Usukaz Lightroot, but it is a useful entrance to the same broad Depths region. The Wellspring of Wisdom Bargainer Statue is also associated with this route, with the statue described as being near Usukaz and reached from the Naydra Snowfield side.

If you have already activated Zakusu Shrine, fast travel to it and descend through a suitable chasm or underground route. The shrine itself is on the surface, so it does not provide a direct lift to the Depths, but its matching map position makes it easy to confirm that you are searching in the right area.

From another Lightroot

Usukaz is most useful as part of a Lanayru Depths route rather than as an isolated destination. If approaching from another activated Lightroot, compare the map with the surface map and follow the visible open ground. The surrounding Depths contain steep terrain and large underground obstacles, so a straight line on the map may not be a walkable route.

The last three recommendations concern general Depths travel and are not special requirements for activating Usukaz.

From the surface: A practical route is

  1. 01
Travel to the Mount Lanayru area.
  2. 02
Enter the Depths through Naydra Snowfield Chasm.
  3. 03
Use Brightbloom Seeds or another light source to reveal the surrounding terrain.
  4. 04
Move towards the Usukaz Lightroot coordinates.
  5. 05
Activate the root before attempting longer exploration routes.

Nearby connections

Wellspring of Wisdom

The Wellspring of Wisdom is the principal named landmark near Usukaz Lightroot. It lies to the northeast or north-eastward side of the Lightroot, depending on the exact route taken through the terrain. Guides identify Usukaz as southwest of the Wellspring.

The Wellspring should be treated as a separate location. It is not a chamber inside Usukaz Lightroot, and reaching the root does not automatically complete any Wellspring-related activity.

Wellspring of Wisdom Bargainer Statue

A Bargainer Statue is located in the Wellspring of Wisdom area at approximately 3805, -1328, -0858. Usukaz Lightroot is cited as the closest Lightroot to this statue.

The statue provides the ordinary Bargainer Statue services: exchanging Poes for Depths-related items and, depending on the statue’s discoveries and the player’s progression, purchasing equipment and useful materials. The service belongs to the statue, not to Usukaz Lightroot itself.

Because the statue is at a lower elevation than the Lightroot, do not assume that moving directly towards its map marker means climbing. You may need to descend into a deeper hollow or follow the terrain around a ridge.

Flux Construct II arena

A Flux Construct II is located north of Usukaz Lightroot. References place it around 3527, -1340, -0600 or close to that position, with small differences between guide maps.

This is a separate boss encounter, not a boss guarding the Lightroot. You can activate Usukaz without defeating it.

Flux Constructs change form during battle and expose a glowing core that must be detached or struck. Their form-changing phases can make the fight more demanding than an ordinary Depths enemy, so activating Usukaz first is sensible. The root gives you a nearby return point if the encounter goes badly. Flux Construct II is also specifically identified as dropping both ordinary and Large Zonai Charges.

Surface connection: Zakusu Shrine

Zakusu Shrine is the surface shrine directly associated with Usukaz Lightroot. Its shrine challenge is Proving Grounds: Ascension, and the shrine is connected to the surface shrine quest The High Spring and the Light Rings. The shrine is listed around 3526–3527, -1482, 0168–0190, depending on the source’s coordinate reading.

The shrine quest begins with Nazbi near the Spring of Wisdom. This activity belongs to the surface Mount Lanayru area, not to Usukaz Lightroot, but it explains why the two locations are often discussed together.

Zakusu Shrine is a Proving Grounds challenge, meaning Link enters with his normal equipment removed and must use weapons and materials provided inside. Completing it grants the shrine’s normal Light of Blessing reward and access to its treasure chest. The challenge is not required to activate Usukaz Lightroot.

For an efficient visit, use this order

  1. 01
Activate Usukaz Lightroot first. This removes the local darkness and gives you a reliable fast-travel point.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Check the map against Zakusu Shrine. If the shrine is incomplete, you can later return to the surface and tackle Proving Grounds: Ascension.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Explore towards the Wellspring of Wisdom. Follow the terrain rather than forcing a straight line. Look for the Wellspring and its lower-elevation Bargainer Statue.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Stock up at the Bargainer Statue. Spend Poes only after checking whether you need Depths armour, utility items or materials more urgently elsewhere.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Approach the Flux Construct II from the north. Mark the arena before beginning if you want an easy return route.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Return to Usukaz before leaving the region. This ensures the Lightroot is available as a fast-travel destination and makes later Lanayru cleanup easier.
