About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Depths, Lightroot mechanics, nearby Depths landmarks and a nearby Lynel. It does not explain the main story beyond the general exploration systems.
Overview
U-u-ujoj Lightroot is a Lightroot in the West Necluda Depths, directly beneath the surface shrine Joju-u-u Shrine. Activating it illuminates the surrounding Depths map, removes gloom effects while Link stands in its light, and adds the location as a fast-travel point. Its main value is strategic rather than architectural: it gives access to a difficult southern section of the Depths and provides a useful staging point for travelling towards the Abandoned Lurelin Mine, nearby enemy territory and the wider Necluda underground network.
The Lightroot itself is not a settlement, dungeon or mine. It has no named residents, shop, quest giver or dedicated treasure reward confirmed by the available sources. Most of the meaningful exploration lies in the surrounding caves, gloom fields and routes connected to it.
Boundaries and scope
U-u-ujoj Lightroot should be treated as a single Lightroot location and its immediate surrounding area, not as a name for the whole southeastern Depths.
The wider southeast Depths also includes locations such as Kohsustu Lightroot, Sohse Lightroot, Mimufis Lightroot, Kotimab Lightroot and Abandoned Lurelin Mine, but these are separate named places. They should not be treated as parts of U-u-ujoj Lightroot itself. Lists of Lightroots in the region place U-u-ujoj among the group covering the Abandoned Hateno Mine and Abandoned Lurelin Mine areas, while broader maps list the neighbouring Lightroots separately.
The relevant regional hierarchy is
Location and geography
U-u-ujoj Lightroot stands in the southern Depths beneath the West Necluda area. It is positioned below Joju-u-u Shrine, making the surface-to-Depths relationship particularly useful for navigation. As with other Lightroots, the surface shrine is not an entrance to the Lightroot. The two locations occupy corresponding positions on different map layers, but Link still needs to enter the Depths through a chasm or travel from another underground location.
The surrounding underground terrain is part of the open Depths rather than a sealed interior. Expect broad gloom-darkened ground, uneven paths, rock formations and passages that can be difficult to read before the Lightroot is active. The area is connected to the southern Necluda underground routes and lies east of the Kohsustu Lightroot, with the Abandoned Lurelin Mine farther to the east.
Neighbouring places, not subareas of U-u-ujoj
The last group is included for orientation only. They are separate locations and should be visited as independent entries when documenting the complete Necluda Depths.

The surface counterpart: Joju-u-u Shrine
U-u-ujoj Lightroot corresponds to Joju-u-u Shrine on the surface. The shrine is located in West Necluda and contains the Building Bridges trial, which uses Ultrahand to connect planks and create crossings over gaps.
Nintendo specifically recommends comparing shrine positions with the Depths map when trying to work out where a nearby Lightroot may be.
Shrine contents
The shrine is not physically part of U-u-ujoj Lightroot, and completing the shrine is not required to activate the Lightroot. Conversely, activating U-u-ujoj does not complete Joju-u-u Shrine.
The correspondence is useful in both directions
- 01Find Joju-u-u Shrine on the surface.
- 02Open the map and switch to the Depths layer.
- 03Check the matching position below the shrine.
- 04Use the surface location as a rough orientation point when searching underground.

How to reach U-u-ujoj Lightroot
Recommended approach
The safest approach is to enter the Depths through a nearby chasm, activate any Lightroots encountered on the way, and travel through the open underground terrain towards U-u-ujoj. The exact route depends on which chasms and Lightroots you have already unlocked.
The available sources agree on the Lightroot’s position near 1514, -3578, although several secondary guides contain typographical coordinate errors, including a missing minus sign or an incorrect height value. The Zelda Dungeon listing gives the most internally consistent coordinate as (1514, -3578, -0550), while the matching shrine is listed around (1515, -3577, 0155).
Recommended approach: A practical route is
- 01Prepare for the Depths. Carry Brightbloom Seeds or Brightbloom arrows, gloom-resistant or gloom-healing food, healing meals and a strong weapon set.
- 02Enter through a nearby chasm in the Necluda area.
- 03Use the map’s surface layer as a guide. The position of Joju-u-u Shrine gives you a useful above-ground reference.
- 04Travel towards the coordinates around 1514, -3578, -0550.
- 05Look for the Lightroot’s visible glow in the darkness. Lightroots can usually be seen from a considerable distance once you are in the correct part of the Depths.
- 06Activate the root by interacting with its base.
- 07Mark the surrounding routes before leaving, especially the direction of the nearby Lynel and the route towards the Abandoned Lurelin Mine.
What activating the Lightroot does
Activating U-u-ujoj Lightroot provides the normal Lightroot benefits:
A Lightroot’s revealed map area is limited. It is possible to activate U-u-ujoj and still have substantial darkness around nearby mines, enemy camps or distant Lightroots.
Nearby enemies and hazards
Lynel
A Lynel is found in the wider area near U-u-ujoj Lightroot. Sources place it east of Kohsustu Lightroot and west of the Abandoned Lurelin Mine, around a bend in the underground route and near a large patch of gloom.
This is not a boss attached to the Lightroot. It is a normal overworld enemy encounter that can be avoided, fought or revisited after it respawns according to the game’s ordinary enemy-respawn rules.
Suggested Lynel procedure
A Lynel encounter is not required for the Lightroot, the corresponding shrine or ordinary Depths progression.
Gloom
Gloom is the most important environmental hazard in the area. It can reduce Link’s maximum Hearts when he stands on affected ground, and the damage remains until it is healed by suitable food, returning to the surface, using Lightroot illumination or other appropriate means.
The nearby Lynel route is specifically associated with a large gloom-covered patch, so avoid sprinting blindly through the darkness. Brightbloom Seeds, gloom-resistant meals and careful use of the Lightroot’s safe illumination make the approach considerably easier. Nintendo also recommends throwing Brightbloom Seeds or attaching them to arrows when navigating the Depths.
Darkness and difficult terrain
Before activation, the surrounding map and terrain can conceal:
The area is not known as a separate dungeon with a fixed puzzle layout. Its difficulty comes from underground navigation, visibility and enemy positioning.
Suggested Lynel procedure
- 01Activate U-u-ujoj Lightroot first.
- 02Heal any lost maximum Hearts before approaching.
- 03Bring weapons with high durability and strong fuse materials.
- 04Use the illuminated ground to identify gloom patches and escape routes.
- 05If you are not equipped for the fight, mark the Lynel’s position and return later.
- 06Use the Lightroot as a fast-travel retreat point if the fight goes badly.
Items and collectibles
No dedicated chest reward, named collectible or unique item placed directly at U-u-ujoj Lightroot is confirmed by the sources consulted for this guide.
The Lightroot should therefore be approached primarily as:
The wider surrounding Depths may contain ordinary materials, monster parts, Zonaite and random environmental resources, but these should not be presented as fixed U-u-ujoj Lightroot rewards without a verified item listing. The same caution applies to weapons and enemy drops near the Lynel, since those are not unique Lightroot collectibles.
Facilities, services and residents
This distinction matters because the nearby Abandoned Lurelin Mine is a separate mine location and should not be folded into the Lightroot’s facilities. References to a Forge Construct at the Abandoned Lurelin Mine concern that mine, not U-u-ujoj itself.
Suggested exploration route
For a first visit, use the following order:
For completion-focused players, U-u-ujoj is especially useful as a reference point when checking the southern Necluda Depths. Lightroots and surface shrines can be compared on the two map layers, helping identify locations that have not yet been activated.
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Activate U-u-ujoj Lightroot immediately.
- 02Stand beneath the Lightroot long enough to recover from any gloom damage that can be purified by its light.
- 03Open the Depths map and place a marker in the direction of the nearest unexplored dark area.
- 04Identify the route leading towards the Abandoned Lurelin Mine.
- 05Approach the nearby Lynel only if your weapons, armour and healing supplies are adequate.
- 06If continuing east, keep Brightbloom Seeds ready for unlit passages.
- 07Return to U-u-ujoj before leaving the region so it remains available as a fast-travel point.
- 08Compare the Depths map with the surface map to check for other shrines and Lightroots you may have missed.
Progression and missability
U-u-ujoj Lightroot is not tied to a permanently missable event. It can be activated during free exploration, after the main story, or at any intermediate point when Link is strong enough to reach it. General Lightroot guides confirm that Lightroots remain available after the story and are not permanently missable.
The nearby Lynel is also a repeatable overworld encounter rather than a one-time story boss. There is no verified unique quest reward that disappears if the player leaves the area.
