Key takeaways

  • Nisoij Lightroot is directly below Jiosin Shrine, following the Depths’ recurring surface-shrine and Lightroot relationship.
  • It is located at -0240, -0372, -0499, in the Central Hyrule Depths.
  • The Lightroot is normally reached by entering through Hyrule Field Chasm and travelling south.
  • It is an early objective in Camera Work in the Depths, although the Lightroot remains accessible independently if the player explores the Depths before completing the quest.
  • A small camp near the southern edge of the illuminated area contains Bokoblins, a Like Like and a Rock Like, as well as a chest containing a Sundelion.
  • The surrounding trees and darkness make this area useful for gathering early Depths materials, including Bomb Flowers and Deep Fireflies, though some resource placements may vary with the game’s normal respawn behaviour.

Overview

Nisoij Lightroot is one of the first important landmarks Link can reach in the Depths. It lies a short distance south of the Hyrule Field Chasm, beneath the surface location of Jiosin Shrine. During the early quest Camera Work in the Depths, Ponnick directs Link towards it as the first major source of light in the underground world.

Activating Nisoij Lightroot illuminates the surrounding section of the Central Hyrule Depths, reveals that portion of the Depths map and establishes a permanent travel point. The area around it is comparatively accessible, but the approach still introduces several of the Depths’ defining dangers: darkness, gloom, hostile monsters and limited visibility.

Nisoij Lightroot itself is a small facility rather than a broad settlement or dungeon. Its wider scope includes the immediately surrounding Depths terrain, nearby enemy camps and resource-gathering spots. It should not be confused with Jiosin Shrine on the surface, the Hyrule Field Chasm entrance or the neighbouring Iayusus Lightroot farther west.

Overview and boundaries

Nisoij Lightroot is a single Lightroot location within the Central Hyrule Depths. The location’s practical boundary is the Lightroot platform and the surrounding terrain revealed by its light. It does not include Jiosin Shrine, which is a separate surface location, or the Hyrule Field Chasm itself.

The nearest major neighbouring Lightroot relevant to early progression is Iayusus Lightroot, located to the west. During Camera Work in the Depths, Link activates Nisoij Lightroot and then continues westwards while looking for Robbie. The route between the two locations contains gloom pools and hostile groups, so Nisoij works both as an objective and as a useful return point.

Named locations within or immediately associated with the area

Hyrule Field Chasm and Jiosin Shrine are associated access and counterpart locations, not subareas of Nisoij Lightroot itself.

Geography and layout

The Lightroot stands in a broad, dark section of the Depths beneath central Hyrule. Before activation, the surrounding landscape is difficult to read. Brightbloom Seeds, torches, thrown glow materials or other light sources are helpful while approaching it.

Once activated, the Lightroot casts away the local darkness and reveals a sizeable section of the Depths map. As with other Lightroots, it also provides a fast-travel destination and restores hearts damaged by gloom when Link interacts with its light. Lightroots are broadly comparable to underground equivalents of Skyview Towers, although they illuminate the Depths rather than revealing the surface or sky.

The area is not divided into formal named districts, buildings or underground roads. Its most useful landmarks are:

Access and recommended route

From Hyrule Field Chasm

This is the intended early-game approach.

The route is relatively short, but it is worth moving carefully. Gloom on the ground reduces Link’s maximum hearts while he stands in it and can make ordinary monster encounters much more dangerous. Early in the game, avoiding unnecessary fights is often more efficient than trying to clear every enemy group.

Alternative access

Nisoij Lightroot can also be reached from other parts of the Central Hyrule Depths after the region has been opened up. The exact route depends on which Lightroots, chasms and underground paths the player has already discovered. There is no requirement to complete Camera Work in the Depths before activating it, although the quest provides the clearest introduction and marker.

If Jiosin Shrine has already been completed, travelling to the shrine on the surface can help with orientation, but the shrine and Lightroot remain separate map destinations. The surface shrine’s location is useful because Lightroots and shrines share corresponding map positions, with the Lightroot name generally being the shrine name reversed. Thus Jiosin becomes Nisoij.

From Hyrule Field Chasm

  1. 01
Enter the Depths through Hyrule Field Chasm.
  2. 02
Speak with Ponnick if Camera Work in the Depths is active.
  3. 03
Prepare a light source before leaving the entry area. Brightbloom Seeds are the most convenient option, but torches and other glowing materials also work.
  4. 04
Travel generally south towards the glowing Lightroot visible in the darkness.
  5. 05
Activate Nisoij Lightroot by examining its central structure.
  6. 06
Use the newly revealed map to orient yourself before continuing west towards the next quest objective.

Camera Work in the Depths

Nisoij Lightroot is the first major landmark in Camera Work in the Depths, the quest that introduces Link to Robbie’s Depths investigation.

After Link reaches the Depths, Ponnick points him towards the nearby Lightroot. Activating it reveals the local map and makes the onward search for Robbie easier. Link then travels west, through darker terrain and monster-infested sections, towards Iayusus Lightroot and Robbie’s research position.

The Lightroot is therefore important to progression, but it is not itself a quest dungeon. Its role is navigational and atmospheric:

Completing the wider quest unlocks the Camera function for the Purah Pad, but activating Nisoij Lightroot alone does not grant the Camera.

Enemies and nearby combat

A small enemy camp lies near the southern end of the area illuminated by Nisoij Lightroot. The confirmed enemies associated with this camp are:

The camp is a useful early combat test because it combines ordinary melee enemies with Like Like hazards. The Like Like and Rock Like can be difficult to approach safely in darkness, so activating the Lightroot first is strongly recommended.

Practical combat advice

There is no confirmed boss encounter, miniboss arena or major story battle within Nisoij Lightroot itself.

Items, materials and collectibles

Fixed or notable reward

A chest near the southern enemy camp contains:

Sundelions are particularly valuable early in the game because they can be used in recipes that help recover hearts damaged by gloom. The chest is not part of the Lightroot activation process, so it is easy to miss if the player follows the quest marker west immediately after activating the root.

Nearby materials

The area is associated with several Depths materials:

Bomb Flowers are especially useful for mining, destroying obstacles and dealing explosive damage, while Deep Fireflies provide a renewable source of light during exploration. Puffshrooms can create a temporary cloud that helps Link approach groups of enemies without immediately being detected.

Resource placements should be treated as ordinary overworld pickups rather than guaranteed quest rewards. Some materials can respawn, and the exact number available may depend on whether the player is checking the immediate trees, the route around the Lightroot or the wider surrounding terrain.

Landmarks, buildings and services

Nisoij Lightroot has no settlement, shop, inn, stable, forge, named house or permanent NPC camp. The following categories are not present as confirmed functional features within the location:

The Lightroot itself is the principal facility. Its functions are:

These functions are available after activation and do not require a separate purchase or upgrade.

Residents and characters

There are no permanent residents confirmed at Nisoij Lightroot.

Both are visitors or quest-associated characters rather than residents of Nisoij Lightroot. Robbie is not permanently stationed at the Lightroot itself.

A note left near the Lightroot warns Link about the darkness of the Depths. It is associated with Robbie’s investigation and helps reinforce the location’s role as an early survey point.

Suggested exploration route

For a first visit, the following order is efficient:

Return to Nisoij Lightroot whenever gloom damage or poor visibility makes the route unsafe.

Lore and trivia

The name Nisoij Lightroot is the reverse of Jiosin Shrine, reflecting one of the game’s most useful map conventions. Each Lightroot corresponds to a surface shrine, allowing players to use one map layer to locate the other. This relationship is especially helpful when searching for undiscovered shrines or Lightroots in areas hidden by darkness.

Nisoij also represents the game’s intended introduction to the Depths’ exploration rhythm: enter through a chasm, find light, reveal the map, restore gloom-damaged health and use the newly established travel point to extend the expedition.
