Key takeaways
- Iayusus Lightroot is in the Central Hyrule Depths, at approximately -0785, -0433, -0469.
- It corresponds to Susuyai Shrine on the Surface The reversed names are a deliberate naming pattern used for Lightroots and their Surface shrines.
- Activating it lights the surrounding Depths, reveals nearby map data, creates a Travel Point and restores hearts lost to Gloom while Link stands within its light.
- During Camera Work in the Depths, Robbie waits beside the Lightroot and directs Link towards the nearby statue.
- The Lightroot is close to a northern enemy camp containing a chest with five Giant Brightbloom Seeds.
- It is the starting point for the statue trail used in A Mystery in the Depths, but the Lightroot, the statue, Robbie’s camp and the northern enemy camp should be treated as separate nearby features rather than one combined structure.

Introduction
Iayusus Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Central Hyrule Depths, directly beneath Susuyai Shrine on the Surface. It is one of the first important Lightroots many players encounter because it forms part of the route used during Camera Work in the Depths, the Main Quest that unlocks the Purah Pad’s Camera and Hyrule Compendium.
The Lightroot itself is a small location rather than a broad region. Its immediate surroundings include Robbie’s temporary camp, the statue associated with the first Depths investigation, and an enemy camp to the north. It also acts as a useful travel point for later exploration, particularly during A Mystery in the Depths, when Josha sends Link to investigate a chain of statues leading away from the area.
Location and boundaries
Iayusus Lightroot is a single Lightroot site in the Central Hyrule Depths. The relevant area is best understood as a small cluster of separate points of interest:
The location should not be expanded to include the entire Hyrule Field Chasm or every route from Lookout Landing. The Hyrule Field Chasm is the Surface entrance used to begin the quest, while Nisoij Lightroot is an earlier Lightroot on the route from the chasm. Iayusus Lightroot is the later destination where Robbie is found.
Named entries within the immediate scope
The campfire is a temporary quest-associated setup rather than a named settlement or permanent facility. No shop, inn, stable, forge, mining operation or settlement is verified at Iayusus Lightroot.

The Lightroot’s functions
Like other Lightroots, Iayusus Lightroot has four important functions.
Illumination
Activating the Lightroot produces a large permanent light source in the nearby Depths. This makes the local terrain easier to navigate and reduces the need to spend Brightbloom Seeds immediately around the site.
Map revelation
The surrounding section of the Depths map becomes visible on the Purah Pad. The revealed area is comparatively small, so activating Iayusus Lightroot does not map the whole Central Hyrule Depths. Other Lightroots remain necessary for wider coverage.
Fast travel
Once activated, Iayusus Lightroot becomes a Travel Point. This is particularly useful after completing Camera Work in the Depths, as the location remains relevant to later investigations.
Gloom recovery
Standing within the Lightroot’s illumination restores the maximum hearts Link has lost to Gloom. This does not make Link immune to Gloom elsewhere, and it does not remove the need for Gloom-resistant meals or the Depths armour set during longer journeys. The Lightroot simply provides a safe recovery point after nearby exploration.

Access and routes
Recommended first-time route
The intended route begins at the Hyrule Field Chasm, south of Lookout Landing.
Robbie initially moves ahead from the Hyrule Field Chasm, while Ponnick explains that he was unable to keep up. Ponnick points Link towards Nisoij Lightroot, but Robbie continues beyond it towards Iayusus Lightroot.
Preparation checklist
Josha gives Link Brightbloom Seeds and arrows during the quest, but relying solely on the supplied items can make the route unnecessarily dark. Brightbloom Seeds can be thrown or fused to arrows, then fired onto walls, ceilings or the ground to illuminate the route.
Alternative access
After activation, the simplest route is to fast travel directly to Iayusus Lightroot. Link can also approach from other parts of the Central Hyrule Depths, but the surrounding terrain is dark before the Lightroot is activated and may contain Gloom-covered ground, cliffs and hostile encounters. The Hyrule Field Chasm route is the most clearly supported story route.
---
Recommended first-time route
- 01Start Camera Work in the Depths by speaking to Josha and Robbie at Lookout Landing after the relevant early-game preparations.
- 02Travel to the Hyrule Field Chasm and descend into the Depths.
- 03Find Ponnick at the bottom of the chasm.
- 04Follow the route towards Nisoij Lightroot, using Brightbloom Seeds or Giant Brightbloom Seeds to illuminate the darkness.
- 05Continue westwards from Nisoij Lightroot.
- 06Read the notes left by Robbie along the route.
- 07Continue towards the visible glow of Iayusus Lightroot.
- 08Activate Iayusus Lightroot.
- 09Speak to Robbie beside the campfire and investigate the nearby statue.
- 10Use the Camera on the statue when Robbie unlocks the function.

Associated characters and factions
Robbie
Robbie is the principal character associated with Iayusus Lightroot. During Camera Work in the Depths, he establishes a temporary camp beside the Lightroot and examines the nearby statue. His research is connected to Josha’s investigation of a mysterious figure shown on a slate recovered from the Depths.
When the Lightroot is activated, Robbie reacts to the sudden illumination and begins examining the statue more closely. He then repairs and unlocks the Camera and Hyrule Compendium functions on Link’s Purah Pad.
Josha
Josha does not remain at Iayusus Lightroot. She is the researcher who initiates the investigation at Lookout Landing and later receives Link’s photograph. Her work forms part of the Chasm Investigation Team and the wider Zonai Survey Team.
Ponnick
Ponnick is encountered earlier near the bottom of the Hyrule Field Chasm. He helps direct Link towards Robbie and Nisoij Lightroot, but is not a permanent resident of Iayusus Lightroot.
Chasm Investigation Team
The team’s work provides the story context for the area. It investigates the strange chasms formed after the Upheaval and gathers evidence about the Depths. Iayusus Lightroot is therefore a research stop rather than a settlement or military outpost.
Character directory
No ordinary civilian residents, guards, merchants or law-enforcement personnel are verified at the Lightroot itself.

Landmarks
Statue That Points the Way
The most important landmark near Iayusus Lightroot is the Statue That Points the Way. It resembles the mysterious figure shown on the slate that concerns Josha.
During Camera Work in the Depths, Link photographs this statue for Josha. The photograph confirms that the figure is not merely an image on an isolated artefact and becomes an early piece of evidence for a civilisation connected with the Depths.
The statue also has significance beyond the first quest. During A Mystery in the Depths, similar statues form a chain leading away from Iayusus Lightroot. They point from one to another, creating a route through the darkness towards a later objective.
Robbie’s campfire
Robbie’s campfire is a temporary research camp beside the Lightroot. It is used for dialogue and quest progression, not as a cooking shop, inn or permanent settlement. It should not be confused with a general Depths camp operated by the Zonai Survey Team.
Northern monster camp
A monster camp lies north of the Lightroot. It contains Bokoblins and a Moblin, as well as a chest containing five Giant Brightbloom Seeds. This is a fixed local reward rather than a random drop.
---
Enemies and hazards
Verified enemies
The northern camp is the clearest fixed combat encounter near the Lightroot. The available evidence does not establish a named boss, mini-boss or unique enemy for Iayusus Lightroot itself.
Environmental hazards
The main hazards are typical of the Depths:
The Darkness is the principal obstacle during the first visit. It is safer to illuminate the route progressively rather than sprinting towards a distant glow. Fire-based illumination and Brightbloom Seeds are useful, but Brightbloom Seeds are generally the more dependable option for lighting walls and ceilings.
Enemy-camp approach
The chest reward is particularly useful if you are exploring the Depths early, when your supply of lighting materials may still be limited.
---
Enemy-camp approach: When approaching the northern camp
- 01Activate Iayusus Lightroot first if you have not already done so.
- 02Use the Lightroot’s illumination to identify the camp’s position.
- 03Look for Gloom around the camp before charging in.
- 04Deal with the Moblin carefully, as it can control the battlefield with its reach and knockback.
- 05Search the camp after the fight for the chest containing five Giant Brightbloom Seeds.
Items and collectibles
Quest-related items
During the opening quest, Josha provides Brightbloom Seeds and arrows to support Link’s first journey into the Depths. These are quest assistance items rather than a permanent feature of Iayusus Lightroot.
Materials
The nearby monster camp and surrounding Depths can provide ordinary materials associated with Depths exploration. One location reference lists Bomb Flowers, Muddle Buds and Puffshrooms in connection with the area, but these should be treated as local obtainable materials rather than a guaranteed, exhaustive spawn list.
Collectible directory
No Korok Seed, Bubbul Gem, armour piece, Sage’s Will, Old Map or named weapon is verified in the immediate Iayusus Lightroot scope by the sources consulted.

Camera Work in the Depths
This is the main quest most directly tied to Iayusus Lightroot.
Quest progression at the Lightroot
The Camera and Hyrule Compendium are initially unavailable. Robbie restores them during this investigation, making Iayusus Lightroot an important progression point even though the Lightroot itself does not contain a shrine-like challenge.
Does activation order matter?
If Link activates Iayusus Lightroot before speaking to Robbie, Robbie immediately directs his attention towards the nearby statue. The quest remains completable, so activating the Lightroot early does not appear to lock or spoil the investigation.
A Mystery in the Depths
Later, Josha asks Link to investigate additional statues. The quest begins at Lookout Landing and directs Link to Iayusus Lightroot, where the statue trail starts or can be followed. Josha provides ten Giant Brightbloom Seeds and ten arrows for the search.
The statues lead through the Depths. The route eventually reaches darker territory and includes a Frox encounter. Nihcayam Lightroot is a useful later checkpoint along the statue route, but it is a separate Lightroot and should not be counted as part of Iayusus Lightroot.

Lore and significance
Iayusus Lightroot is significant because it is one of the first places where Link directly connects the Depths with evidence of an earlier civilisation. The nearby statue resembles the figure on Josha’s slate, giving the researchers a physical landmark to study.
The Lightroot also illustrates the relationship between Hyrule’s layers. Its name corresponds to Susuyai Shrine, with the letters reversed. This Surface-to-Depths relationship is consistent throughout the game, and players can use known shrine locations to infer the possible positions of Lightroots, while activated Lightroots can help confirm the locations of Surface shrines.
The location has no known direct appearance in Breath of the Wild. Lightroots are a feature introduced in Tears of the Kingdom, although the corresponding Surface region and Susuyai Shrine belong to the game’s wider continuation of Hyrule.
