Key takeaways

  • Mayamats Shrine is on Rutimala Hill, in the Gerudo Highlands, at approximately −4638, −1513, 0470. Different mapping references place the shrine’s vertical coordinate a little differently, so use the map position and visible shrine structure rather than relying on the final digit alone.
  • The shrine’s official trial name is A Route for a Ball.
  • The large ball is not the final key It is a movable platform, a route-making tool and part of the solution for bringing the smaller ball back to the entrance.
  • The small ball is the ball that belongs in the receptacle beside the entrance.
  • The treasure chest contains a Large Zonai Charge Completing the shrine awards one Light of Blessing.
  • If you lose a ball, the shrine provides replacement balls through dispensers on the middle level, so a mistake does not permanently block progress.

About this guide

Spoilers: The guide below gives the full solution, including the treasure chest and the purpose of both balls.

Overview

Mayamats Shrine is a Shrine of Light in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Its trial, “A Route for a Ball”, is a compact physics puzzle built around two differently sized balls, rails, fans, a gap and several uses of Link’s abilities. The shrine stands on Rutimala Hill in the Gerudo Highlands, west of the Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower and south of the Risoka Snowfield. Its reward is a Light of Blessing, with a Large Zonai Charge in the optional treasure chest.

The shrine is easy to overlook because it is embedded in the mountains rather than placed in a settlement or beside a conspicuous road. It is also one of the more useful early demonstrations of how Tears of the Kingdom expects players to combine physical objects with Recall, Ultrahand, Ascend and the paraglider rather than solving a room through a single ability.

Rutimala Hill

Mayamats Shrine is located on Rutimala Hill, a named surface landmark in the southwestern part of the Gerudo Highlands. Rutimala Hill lies south of the Risoka Snowfield and close to the Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower. The shrine is therefore part of the Gerudo Highlands mountain area, not the Gerudo Desert proper and not the Gerudo Canyon region.

The surrounding terrain is cold, steep and exposed. The shrine’s map position is approximately:

Several guides give slightly different Z values, including values around 0452 to 0470. This is normal for map references that record the shrine’s entrance, pedestal or nearby ground rather than exactly the same point. The horizontal location is the important part when searching manually.

Named location directory: surrounding area

The Stamayam Lightroot is the Depths counterpart associated with the shrine. It is useful when checking the surface-to-Depths relationship on the map, but it is not part of Mayamats Shrine itself.

What is included in this guide

The scope of this page is deliberately narrow:

There are no residents, shops, businesses, faction headquarters, roads, stables or mission-giving NPCs inside Mayamats Shrine.

Recommended approach

The most direct approach is from the Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower. Mayamats Shrine is west of the tower, on the high mountain terrain around Rutimala Hill. Use the tower to gain altitude, then glide towards the shrine’s map position. This is generally easier than climbing the mountain from the desert side, especially if Link has limited stamina.

The region’s elevation and weather can make the final approach awkward. Carry cold-resistance equipment or food if the temperature indicator shows that Link is taking damage. The shrine itself does not require cold resistance once entered, but the route across the Gerudo Highlands may.

A practical route is

  1. 01
Activate the Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower if it is not already available.
  2. 02
Launch from the tower and open the map while gliding.
  3. 03
    Set a marker around −4638, −1513.
  4. 04
    Glide westwards towards Rutimala Hill.
  5. 05
Land on the mountain and look for the shrine’s green-blue glow.
  6. 06
    Activate Mayamats Shrine before entering.

Access checklist

There is no story quest, shrine quest, boss encounter or special progression requirement attached to Mayamats Shrine in the base game. It can be completed whenever Link can reach the Gerudo Highlands and use the necessary abilities.

---

Mayamats Shrine is a single puzzle chamber divided vertically into several functional levels.

Entrance level

The altar is visible near the start, but it cannot be reached until Link returns with the correct ball.

Fan and rail level

This is the main setup area. The large ball found here is essential, but it is not the object that opens the final gate.

Upper ball level

The highest section contains the small ball and the rails over which it travels. The small ball can roll or slide away if approached carelessly. Recall is the safest way to stop and redirect it.

Shrine interior directory

These are descriptive names for the shrine’s fixed features, not separately named locations in the game’s map.

---

1. Enter the shrine and identify the objective

Move forwards from the entrance and look towards the altar. The gate is closed, and the nearby receptacle shows that a ball is required.

Do not spend time trying to force the gate or carry the large ball directly to the receptacle. The large ball is part of the route, but the final switch requires the smaller ball.

Continue into the shrine and look for the upward fans.

2. Use the fans to reach the upper ledge

Glide over the large pit using the fans. You can let the updraft carry Link upwards, then steer onto the ledge above.

Once there, locate the large ball in the side alcove. Pick it up with Ultrahand and bring it down to the level below.

At this stage, avoid sending it down the wrong rail. The ball is needed both for the optional chest and for the later return route.

3. Use the large ball to reach the chest

On the level below, find the small pit with the chest beyond it. Place or drop the large ball into the pit.

The ball acts as a temporary stepping surface. Climb across it and reach the chest ledge.

This chest is optional. Missing it does not prevent completion of the shrine, but it is the shrine’s only treasure chest and should be collected before finishing if you are clearing the area thoroughly.

4. Reposition the large ball for Ascend

Return to the large ball and move it to the slanted section of wall opposite the place where you first found it.

The wall contains a funnel-like opening. Place the ball so that it is held in the sloped section and can serve as a surface above Link.

Stand below it and use Ascend. Link should rise through the ball and emerge on the next level.

This is one of the shrine’s central lessons: the ball is not merely transported along a track. It is also used as an object that makes another route possible.

5. Reach the small ball

On the upper level, locate the small ball travelling over the gap between the rails.

The ball’s position can make it difficult to grab safely. Use Recall when the ball is over the gap:

The exact timing is forgiving, but the important point is to stop the rewind before the ball returns to an inaccessible position. PowerPyx describes this as using Recall to stop the small ball when it is over the gap, then cancelling the ability so that it drops down to Link’s level.

5. Reach the small ball: steps

  1. 01
Target the small ball with Recall.
  2. 02
    Let the rewind begin.
  3. 03
When the ball is brought into a reachable position, cancel Recall.
  4. 04
Allow it to drop or move towards Link.
  5. 05
    Grab it with Ultrahand.

6. Join the two balls

Bring the small ball back to the previous level. The large ball is needed to guide both objects down to the entrance route.

Attach the small ball to the large ball with Ultrahand. The connection does not need to be elegant, but it must be secure enough for the large ball to carry the small one along the rails.

Place the combined balls onto the rail route.

The large ball should slide down towards the earlier level. If the connection comes loose, retrieve the pieces and try again. The shrine’s geometry is designed to make the larger ball travel the route while carrying the smaller ball with it.

7. Separate the small ball at the entrance

Glide or climb back towards the entrance level. Once the connected balls have reached the lower section, use Ultrahand to detach the small ball from the large one.

Carry only the small ball to the receptacle beside the entrance. Insert it into the receptacle.

The gate to the altar opens.

8. Claim the shrine reward

Walk through the opened gate and examine the green altar.

The altar also restores Link’s health and records the shrine as completed. Activating the shrine makes it available as a permanent fast-travel point.

The wrong ball problem

The most common mistake is assuming that the first large ball is the key for the entrance. It is not. The large ball is a tool for:

The small ball is the one that belongs in the entrance receptacle.

If the small ball rolls away

Use Recall rather than chasing it. Rewinding the ball is safer than trying to catch it while it is moving across the gap.

If Recall returns the ball too far, cancel the ability at a different moment and try again.

If the balls separate

Retrieve the small ball and reattach it to the large ball. The connection point can be changed with Ultrahand. Attach the small ball to a stable part of the larger one rather than to an awkward edge.

If a ball is lost

The shrine has dispensers on the middle level that can provide another ball. This prevents a failed attempt from becoming a hard lock.

If Ascend does not work

Check the large ball’s position. It must be close enough above Link and resting in the slanted funnel-like section. If the ball is floating too far away or has rolled out of the wall recess, reposition it with Ultrahand.

If the chest route is missed

The chest is obtained by dropping the large ball into the small pit and using it as a bridge or step to reach the ledge. It is not on the direct altar route, so it is possible to finish the shrine without collecting it.

Shrine reward

The completion reward is one Light of Blessing. Four Lights of Blessing can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel. Mayamats Shrine therefore contributes to both forms of character progression, although the shrine itself does not let the player choose the upgrade directly.

Treasure reward

The optional chest contains a Large Zonai Charge. This is a fixed shrine reward, not a random drop. It can be used to restore or extend Zonai battery power when consumed, making it particularly useful during an exploration phase focused on Zonai devices.

Fast travel

After the shrine is activated, its entrance becomes a fast-travel destination. Completing the puzzle is not necessary merely to activate the travel point, but completing it is required to obtain the Light of Blessing and mark the shrine as cleared.

Completion-state checklist

---

Mayamats Shrine has no combat encounter, so its main hazards are positional rather than offensive.

Main hazards

The shrine does not require a specific weapon, armour set or consumable. Its challenge is primarily about interpreting object roles and using Link’s abilities in sequence.

---

For players clearing this part of the map, the following order is efficient:

This route separates the shrine from the wider Gerudo quest progression. Mayamats Shrine is not gated behind the regional phenomena, the Gerudo main quest or a shrine quest.

Missions and shrine quests

The interior features listed earlier are fixed puzzle structures, but they do not have canonical proper names in the game’s map interface.

---

Mayamats Shrine follows the standard Shrine of Light presentation introduced for the post-Calamity Hyrule of Tears of the Kingdom. Its visible challenge is a physical trial rather than a combat test, reflecting the game’s broader emphasis on manipulating objects and combining abilities.

The trial is especially representative of Tears of the Kingdom because it does not present the player with a single obvious “correct” tool. The large ball functions as a bridge, a platform and a transport component, while Recall changes the behaviour of the small ball and Ultrahand turns two separate objects into a temporary machine. The puzzle is therefore less about finding a key and more about understanding what each object can do in the shrine’s geometry.

Mayamats Shrine has no known story character, regional faction or historical event attached to it. Its significance is mechanical and exploratory: it rewards players who inspect the whole chamber rather than following only the most visible route to the altar.
