About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide explains the shrine’s complete puzzle, treasure chest and nearby cave route.

Overview

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, base game

Kyokugon Shrine is a hidden Shrine of Light beneath the Great Plateau’s northern foothills. Its trial, Alignment of the Circles, is a compact environmental puzzle built around four Ancient Orbs, ten floor sockets and glowing circular markings on the ceiling. The main challenge is not the shrine itself, but finding the correct cave entrance and recognising that the solution is displayed above Link rather than beside the sockets.

Location and boundaries

Great Plateau Foothill Cave

Kyokugon Shrine belongs to the Great Plateau Foothill Cave area. This distinction matters because the shrine is not a surface landmark and should not be treated as part of the Great Plateau’s central ruins, the Forest of Spirits or the nearby surface camps.

The cave entrance lies beneath the northern edge of the Great Plateau, in the Hyrule Field region. It is a short distance south of Hyrule Field Skyview Tower and north of the Forest of Spirits. The entrance is blocked by destructible rock, and the route continues through more than one breakable wall.

Included areas

Nogukoyk Lightroot is useful as a map counterpart, but it is not part of the shrine’s physical route. Kyokugon Shrine and its Lightroot counterpart occupy corresponding positions between the Surface and Depths, as is common for Shrine of Light and Lightroot pairs.

How to reach Kyokugon Shrine

From Hyrule Field Skyview Tower

Hyrule Field Skyview Tower is the most convenient major landmark for a first visit.

The cave route is easy to miss because the shrine itself is underground and its entrance does not present the same obvious glowing structure as an exposed shrine. If the shrine icon is visible on the map but no shrine can be found on the surface, search below the northern Great Plateau wall rather than climbing to the top.

Breaking through the cave

The game does not require a particular tool. Suitable options include:

Because the cave contains multiple rock barriers, one rock-fused weapon may wear out before the route is complete. Carrying spare materials is sensible, especially if entering early in the game.

Cave encounter

The intermediate cavern contains Horriblins. They cling to the ceiling and can attack from above, making the low-ceilinged cave more awkward than the shrine itself. They are ordinary cave enemies rather than a named boss or shrine guardian.

There is no indication that the shrine requires a special quest, regional phenomenon or story milestone. It can be reached and completed during ordinary exploration once Link has access to the area and a way to break the cave walls.

From Hyrule Field Skyview Tower

  1. 01
Launch from Hyrule Field Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
Glide or travel south towards the northern foothills of the Great Plateau.
  3. 03
Look for the cave entrance at the base of the Plateau wall, near the construction materials and rocky ground.
  4. 04
Break through the rock sealing the entrance.
  5. 05
Continue through the first passage and destroy the next rock barrier.
  6. 06
Deal with the Horriblins in the larger cave chamber.
  7. 07
At the rear of that chamber, destroy the darker rock wall.
  8. 08
Kyokugon Shrine is directly beyond it.

Shrine layout

Kyokugon Shrine has two main sections.

First chamber: the ten sockets

The four orbs are placed in only four of the ten sockets. The correct sockets are the ones directly beneath the glowing ceiling markings. The shrine’s wall torches and vertical layout subtly encourage the player to look upward, but there is no need to calculate angles or use a special ability to reveal the solution. Simply inspect the ceiling and match each ripple to the socket beneath it.

Rear chamber: the concealed fifth socket

After the four correct placements, the gate to the rear chamber opens. This room contains:

The fifth socket is deliberately hidden. A green circle is visible on the ceiling above the appropriate area, but the corresponding floor opening is covered by a stone section that looks like part of the floor. Ultrahand reveals that the tile can be lifted.

Walkthrough: Alignment of the Circles

First puzzle

The exact order does not matter. You can use Ultrahand to move the orbs, although carrying them by hand is also possible. If a placement appears correct but the gate remains closed, check that the orb is fully seated in the socket rather than resting on its edge.

Correct-placement checklist

Do not fill sockets merely because they are nearby or symmetrically arranged on the floor. The ceiling markings are the actual solution.

---

First puzzle

  1. 01
Enter the shrine and climb the main stairs.
  2. 02
Look across the chamber and identify the four Ancient Orbs.
  3. 03
Raise the camera and inspect the ceiling.
  4. 04
Find the four glowing circular ripples.
  5. 05
For each ripple, identify the floor socket directly below it.
  6. 06
Carry an Ancient Orb to that socket.
  7. 07
Repeat until all four marked sockets contain orbs.
  8. 08
The gate to the rear chamber opens.

Optional treasure chest

The treasure chest is in a caged side room of the second chamber. It is not necessary for shrine completion, so it is possible to walk straight to the completion terminal and leave without opening it.

The chest reward is fixed rather than a random drop. The Hearty Elixir can fully restore Link’s hearts and add temporary extra hearts, making it particularly useful if the shrine is found early or before a difficult combat encounter.

Important chest advice

Do not assume that the visible green markings in the first room are the only ones in the shrine. The rear chamber contains a fifth ceiling ripple, and that mark corresponds to the hidden socket beneath the removable tile.

---

To claim it

  1. 01
Enter the rear chamber after solving the first four-orb puzzle.
  2. 02
    Locate the fifth Ancient Orb.
  3. 03
Search the floor near the side of the room opposite the caged chest.
  4. 04
Use Ultrahand to highlight the removable stone tile.
  5. 05
Lift the tile to expose the hidden socket.
  6. 06
Place the fifth orb into the socket.
  7. 07
    The cage opens.
  8. 08
Open the chest to receive a Hearty Elixir.

Completion reward

After taking the optional chest, climb to the statue and activate the terminal. Completing Kyokugon Shrine grants:

The Light of Blessing can later be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for a Heart Container or Stamina Vessel. The shrine itself does not contain a boss fight, combat trial or special weapon reward.

Enemies and hazards

Horriblins

The only notable hostile creatures associated with the route are the Horriblins in the cave before the shrine. They are outside the shrine proper, so players who have already activated Kyokugon Shrine will not need to fight them again merely to complete the puzzle.

Environmental hazards

The main hazards are practical rather than severe:

No special weather condition, temperature protection or elemental resistance is required for the shrine route itself.

Within Kyokugon Shrine

The Ancient Orbs are puzzle objects rather than permanent inventory items. They are used within the shrine and are not collected as ordinary equipment.

Associated locations

Nogukoyk Lightroot is a separate Depths location and should not be counted as an item or sub-area within Kyokugon Shrine.

Named-location directory

Depths counterpart

The nearby entries are navigation references rather than all being physically inside the shrine’s boundary. In particular, the Great Plateau and Forest of Spirits are broader neighbouring areas, while Great Plateau Foothill Cave is the direct access subarea.
