The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Base game guide

Introduction

Tsutsu-um Shrine is a Shrine of Light on Outskirt Hill, in the south-western part of Hyrule Field. It stands on a rocky rise immediately above Outskirt Stable, making the stable one of the easiest landmarks from which to locate it. The shrine’s trial is called The Stakes Guide You, a physics puzzle centred on Zonai Stakes, movable panels, a rotating mechanism and a ball that must be guided into a target.

The shrine is a compact, self-contained dungeon rather than a broad settlement or regional subarea. This guide therefore treats the shrine interior, its entrance and the small hilltop approach as the main scope. Outskirt Stable, Coliseum Ruins and the wider Hyrule Field road network are neighbouring connections, not parts of Tsutsu-um Shrine itself.

Location and boundaries

Tsutsu-um Shrine is located in Hyrule Field, at the south-western edge of the region. It is built into a raised rocky formation overlooking the road and Outskirt Stable. From the stable, look up towards the nearby hill and the shrine’s green spiral will usually be visible above you. From the wider field, it lies west of the Coliseum Ruins and south-west of Hyrule Field Skyview Tower.

Reaching the shrine

From Outskirt Stable

This is the simplest approach.

The stable is useful as a visual reference and travel stop, but its services and residents are not part of the shrine. Several guides describe Tsutsu-um Shrine as the shrine associated with or overlooking Outskirt Stable because of this close relationship.

From Hyrule Field Skyview Tower

Launch from the tower and glide south-west. The shrine is on the elevated ground beyond the field, close to the stable. This route is particularly convenient if the shrine is visible from the tower and Link has enough stamina or a suitable landing point.

From the Coliseum Ruins

Travel west or south-west from the ruins towards the stable. The shrine sits on the rocky rise beyond the stable area. This route is useful when exploring the southern part of Hyrule Field, but be aware that the Coliseum Ruins themselves are a separate location with their own encounters and rewards.

Access requirements

The shrine can be found early, but the interior puzzle is designed around the Paraglider. The opening route uses an updraft and a glide to cross to the higher side of the chamber. If the shrine has been discovered before Link has obtained the Paraglider, it is better to return later rather than trying to force an unsafe route.

From Outskirt Stable

  1. 01
Leave the stable and look towards the raised rocky ground nearby.
  2. 02
Climb the hill or use the surrounding slopes to gain height.
  3. 03
Follow the shrine’s green glow to the entrance.
  4. 04
Examine the shrine to activate it before entering.

Shrine interior

The chamber is arranged around a large mechanical puzzle. A ball rolls through the structure, and Link must manipulate platforms and Stakes so that the ball reaches a target or receptacle near the exit. The puzzle looks like a small pinball course, but the important principle is that the ball’s path is controlled by physical barriers and angled panels, not by a single switch.

The shrine introduces or tests several useful Tears of the Kingdom ideas:

Objects used in the puzzle

The exact appearance and positioning of the parts may make the puzzle seem more complicated than it is. Most of the solution consists of moving a panel from one section of the room to another, then reusing it in a different role.

Walkthrough: The Stakes Guide You

The following solution uses the intended route and collects the shrine chest.

1. Reach the upper side of the opening chamber

The pillar moves vertically. It is easier to attach the parts while it is low, then ride it upwards rather than trying to make a complicated climbing route.

2. Collect the chest

There is a chest on the far side of the moving pillar.

The chest is not needed to solve the shrine, but it is the only regular treasure chest reported inside Tsutsu-um Shrine, so collect it before completing the altar.

3. Move the useful panel to the main puzzle

Bring the movable panel and its associated Stake towards the central puzzle area. You may need to use the updraft again to reach the higher level, then manipulate the object from above or below.

Do not leave the panel behind after using it to reach the upper platform. It is needed again as part of the ball-guiding mechanism.

4. Control the first part of the ball’s route

At the main puzzle, locate the ball’s starting position and the nearby Stake in the wall.

The Stake does not simply serve as a support. Its position changes the angle at which the ball leaves the upper section.

5. Attach a panel to the rotating mechanism

The panel must be attached firmly enough to rotate with the wheel. If it is angled too steeply, the ball may fall away from the lower track. If it is too flat or positioned at the wrong height, it may fail to push the ball towards the target.

6. Place the lower Stake

A second Stake is embedded in the wall near the lower section of the mechanism.

This is the adjustment that makes the rotating section release the ball towards the lower rail rather than sending it harmlessly away.

7. Test the complete mechanism

With the upper Stake, rotating panel and lower Stake in place:

If the ball misses, do not reset the whole shrine. Adjust the nearest Stake or rotate the panel slightly. The most common problem is that one of the Stakes is too high, too low or angled incorrectly.

8. Claim the reward

When the ball reaches the target, the exit opens.

The altar also completes the shrine and leaves Tsutsu-um Shrine available as a fast-travel point.

1. Reach the upper side of the opening chamber

  1. 01
Enter the shrine and look across the gap.
  2. 02
Find the nearby Stake and flat panel.
  3. 03
Use Ultrahand to attach the panel to the Stake.
  4. 04
Attach or position this assembly on the moving pillar to create a temporary platform.
  5. 05
Wait for the pillar to rise, then stand on the platform.
  6. 06
Use the updraft and Paraglider to glide across to the higher platform.

2. Collect the chest

  1. 01
From the upper platform, use Ultrahand to pull or reposition the Stake-and-panel assembly if necessary.
  2. 02
    Cross to the chest area.
  3. 03
Open the chest to receive 5 Arrows.

4. Control the first part of the ball’s route

  1. 01
Raise or reposition the Stake so that it acts as a stop.
  2. 02
The purpose of this piece is to prevent the ball from immediately rolling away in the wrong direction.
  3. 03
Check the ball’s likely route before fixing the Stake permanently.

5. Attach a panel to the rotating mechanism

  1. 01
Take the panel you brought across the chamber.
  2. 02
Attach it to the rotating wheel or platform.
  3. 03
Position it so the panel forms a roughly level surface or paddle at the correct height.
  4. 04
Test the mechanism visually before moving on.

6. Place the lower Stake

  1. 01
    Pull it out with Ultrahand.
  2. 02
Move it beneath the rotating platform.
  3. 03
Set it at an angle pointing down towards the right.
  4. 04
Use it as a guide or stop for the rotating panel.

7. Test the complete mechanism

  1. 01
Return to the ball’s starting area.
  2. 02
Let the ball roll through the mechanism.
  3. 03
Watch whether it reaches the lower track.
  4. 04
Confirm that the rotating panel or attached structure pushes it towards the target.

8. Claim the reward

  1. 01
    Enter the newly opened passage.
  2. 02
    Examine the green altar.
  3. 03
    Receive one Light of Blessing.

Puzzle tips and troubleshooting

The ball rolls away immediately

The upper wall Stake is not positioned correctly. Raise it slightly so that it blocks or redirects the ball instead of allowing it to fall off the intended route.

The rotating platform does not help

Check that the panel is attached to the rotating section rather than merely resting beside it. The panel should move with the mechanism and be positioned at roughly the same level as the route you want the ball to follow.

The ball reaches the lower rail but misses the target

Adjust the lower wall Stake. Its angle controls the final direction. A slightly different position can change the ball’s path enough to make it hit the target.

Use the updraft and Paraglider rather than trying to climb directly across the gap. The opening section is designed to teach this route.

Ultrahand will not grab a part

Move closer, change the camera angle and make sure you are targeting the object itself rather than the wall or moving pillar. If a part is attached, grab the assembly at a visible edge or detach it before repositioning it.

Rewards and progression

Shrine reward

Four Lights of Blessing can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel. Tsutsu-um Shrine is therefore useful both as a puzzle challenge and as part of Link’s wider health and stamina progression.

Treasure reward

This is a fixed shrine chest reward rather than a random drop. It is separate from the Light of Blessing and must be opened manually.

Fast travel

Once activated, the shrine becomes a permanent fast-travel destination. It is especially convenient for:

---

Nearby connections

Tsutsu-um Shrine is well placed for a short exploration circuit.

Outskirt Stable

The stable is directly below the shrine hill and is the most important practical connection. It is a separate location with its own stable facilities, visitors and possible activities. The shrine does not provide stable services, horse registration or stable quests itself.

Coliseum Ruins

The ruins lie to the north-east. They are not part of Tsutsu-um Shrine, and their encounters should be treated independently. The shrine makes a useful fast-travel point when approaching or leaving the ruins.

Hyrule Field Skyview Tower

The tower is farther north-east and provides a reliable aerial route to the shrine. Conversely, Tsutsu-um Shrine can act as a nearby landing or return point after exploring the southern part of the field.

Mu-ustust Lightroot

The shrine has a Depths counterpart called Mu-ustust Lightroot. This reflects the general surface-to-Depths relationship between Shrines of Light and Lightroots. The Lightroot is not physically inside Tsutsu-um Shrine and should be listed as a separate underground landmark.

---

Enemies, hazards and missable content

Tsutsu-um Shrine is a puzzle-only shrine. There is no shrine guardian, combat trial or boss encounter listed for the interior.

The 5 Arrows chest is missable in the practical sense that the shrine can be completed without opening it. It is not reported as permanently missable, since the shrine can normally be revisited after completion.

There is no verified quest-specific lockout, timed state or progression change that prevents the shrine from being completed later. The important access condition is simply having the Paraglider for the intended traversal route.

---

Suggested exploration route

This route keeps the shrine, stable and surrounding landmarks distinct while still making use of their close positions.
