About this guide
Base-game guide for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Major spoilers: This page discusses the Depths, the Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan side adventure and the route to the Abandoned Lanayru Mine.
Overview
Takaruk Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Lanayru Great Spring Depths, directly beneath Kurakat Shrine on the surface. It is positioned at approximately 2360, -0510, -0610, although guides commonly give slightly different height values for the same in-game marker, including -0589 and -0610. The safest practical identification is the map position and its correspondence with Kurakat Shrine rather than a single quoted elevation.
The Lightroot is most significant as a waypoint on the statue trail used during the Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan side adventure. From the East Hill Chasm, Link can follow a sequence of finned or Zora-associated statues eastwards. Takaruk Lightroot is one of the first major landmarks on that route, before the path continues towards Kegopa Lightroot, Ruto Canyon Mine, Kawagom Lightroot and ultimately the Abandoned Lanayru Mine.
Takaruk is a small location rather than a settlement or mine complex. Its relevant content consists of the Lightroot itself, the nearby guiding statue, the surrounding Depths terrain and the route that passes through the area. The nearby Abandoned Kakariko Mine and the wider Lanayru Great Spring Depths are neighbouring locations, not subareas of Takaruk Lightroot.
Location and boundaries
Takaruk Lightroot should be treated as a single Lightroot location, not as a broad name for the surrounding Lanayru Depths. Its immediate scope includes:
It does not include the following neighbouring places:
This distinction matters because route guides often discuss all of these locations together. They form a connected journey, but they are not subareas of Takaruk Lightroot. The Lightroot itself has no confirmed internal buildings, mine shafts, settlement facilities or named service area.
What the Lightroot does
Like other Lightroots, Takaruk serves three practical purposes.
It illuminates the Depths
Activating Takaruk removes darkness from the surrounding section of the Depths map and makes nearby terrain easier to read. Lightroots also reveal a corresponding portion of the Depths map, making them the underground equivalent of a local mapping landmark. There are 120 Lightroots in the base game, and activating all of them reveals the full Depths map.
It becomes a travel point
Once activated, Takaruk Lightroot can be selected as a fast-travel destination while using the map. This makes it useful for returning to the statue route, revisiting nearby mines or approaching the Abandoned Lanayru Mine from the western side.
It restores Gloom-damaged hearts
Interacting with a Lightroot restores hearts that have been damaged by Gloom. It does not function as a shop, cooking station, Forge Construct or quest-giving facility. No separate vendor, named resident or permanent service has been verified at Takaruk itself.
Surface counterpart: Kurakat Shrine
Takaruk Lightroot corresponds to Kurakat Shrine on the surface. Lightroots are generally positioned below Shrines of Light, so the surface map can be used as a navigation aid when searching for a particular underground root.
The surface shrine and the underground Lightroot are separate locations with separate gameplay purposes. Completing Kurakat Shrine provides its shrine reward, while activating Takaruk provides Depths illumination and a travel point. The shrine’s puzzle is not part of Takaruk Lightroot’s scope.
The correspondence is useful in two ways
- 01If Kurakat Shrine is already visible or completed on the surface map, switch to the Depths layer and place a marker beneath it.
- 02If Takaruk Lightroot is activated first, switch the map to the surface layer to identify the shrine above.
Access routes
Recommended route: East Hill Chasm
The clearest route to Takaruk begins at East Hill Chasm, northeast of Kakariko Village. After descending into the Depths, Takaruk Lightroot lies northeast of the chasm according to route guides.
Step-by-step
The route is deliberately signposted by statues. If you lose the trail, return to the last statue and search for the direction in which it points. The statues eventually guide Link through the Depths towards the Abandoned Lanayru Mine.
Alternative routes
Takaruk is not normally the destination when entering from the Lanayru Wetlands Chasm. That chasm leads to a different section of the statue route, beginning near Uasnoj Lightroot. The Lanayru Wetlands route can eventually connect with the same broader journey towards the Abandoned Lanayru Mine, but it is not the most direct way to reach Takaruk.
There is also a route through the Cave Under Zora’s Domain and the Chasm Under Zora’s Domain, but that descent leads much closer to the Abandoned Lanayru Mine itself. It is therefore useful for reaching the mine, not for visiting Takaruk as an intermediate waypoint.
Step-by-step
- 01Travel to East Hill Chasm on the surface.
- 02Descend into the Depths and use Brightbloom Seeds or another light source if the landing area is unlit.
- 03Look for the nearby statue trail.
- 04Follow the finned or Zora-associated statues towards the northeast.
- 05Activate Takaruk Lightroot when it comes into view.
- 06Before continuing, mark the Lightroot on the map if you are following the route manually.
- 07From the slope beside the nearby statue, continue along the statues towards the east and northeast.
The statue trail and the Master Kohga quest
Takaruk Lightroot is most closely associated with the Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan side adventure. After earlier events in the Depths, the quest sends Link towards the Abandoned Lanayru Mine. The East Hill Chasm route is one way to reach the mine, and the statues provide the intended navigation clue.
At Takaruk, the important action is not a conversation or a puzzle. Instead, the Lightroot acts as a checkpoint:
A route guide describes a slope beside the statue at Takaruk. From there, the statues lead northeast, then southeast and east, eventually reaching a cliff overlooking the area around Kegopa Lightroot.
Quest progression
Takaruk can be visited before the Master Kohga quest reaches this part of the Depths. The Lightroot itself is not presented as a permanently missable objective. However, its narrative importance depends on quest progression:
The quest does not need to be active for Link to activate Takaruk. Conversely, activating Takaruk does not by itself complete a quest stage.
Quest progression
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Before the quest | it is an ordinary exploration landmark and map checkpoint. |
| During the quest | it becomes part of the intended statue-guided route to the Abandoned Lanayru Mine. |
| After the quest | it remains available as a fast-travel point and map landmark. |
Nearby connections
The following named locations are connected to Takaruk by route, but remain separate areas.
East Hill Chasm
This is the main surface entry point for the Takaruk route. It is northeast of Kakariko Village. The chasm is outside Takaruk’s boundaries and should not be listed as part of the Lightroot.
Kegopa Lightroot
Kegopa lies farther east along the statue trail. From the route near Takaruk, the statues eventually guide Link towards the area around Kegopa. It is a separate Lightroot and a later checkpoint.
Ruto Canyon Mine
Ruto Canyon Mine is an optional detour near the statue route. It contains mine resources and a chest reported to hold a Large Crystallized Charge. This mine is not part of Takaruk Lightroot, and its contents should not be attributed to Takaruk.
Kawagom Lightroot
Kawagom is farther along the route, near the final approach to the Abandoned Lanayru Mine. It provides another fast-travel point before the mine encounter.
Abandoned Lanayru Mine
This is the major destination associated with the route. During the relevant quest stage, Link encounters Master Kohga there. The mine contains its own enemies, Yiga activity, chests, Constructs and quest rewards. Those should be documented on the Abandoned Lanayru Mine page rather than folded into Takaruk’s directory.
Named directory
Verified fixed collectibles at the Lightroot itself
This directory intentionally separates Takaruk from nearby locations. The Finned statue and the later mine locations are included as route connections, not as claims that they are physically inside the Lightroot’s immediate area.

Enemies and hazards
No fixed boss encounter at Takaruk Lightroot itself has been verified in the researched sources. The surrounding Depths can still contain ordinary Depths hazards and random or regional encounters, including Gloom-covered ground and hostile monsters. Enemy encounters should not be treated as unique Takaruk content unless their placement is confirmed for the exact location.
The main practical hazards are
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Darkness | before activation, the route can be difficult to read. |
| Gloom | exposed Gloom can reduce maximum heart capacity until Link reaches a Lightroot or uses an appropriate recovery method. |
| Uneven terrain | the statue trail crosses slopes, cliffs and broken Depths ground. |
| Navigation errors | leaving the statues can lead into unlit terrain or towards unrelated mines. |
| Limited visibility | a failed route search is more costly before Takaruk is activated, so use Brightbloom Seeds freely. |
Suggested exploration route
For a clean first visit, use this order:
If your immediate goal is only map completion, stop after activating Takaruk. If your goal is the Master Kohga storyline, continue along the statues rather than wandering east without a marker.
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Enter through East Hill Chasm.
- 02Illuminate the landing area.
- 03Locate the statue trail.
- 04Activate Takaruk Lightroot.
- 05Check the Depths map against the surface map to confirm its position beneath Kurakat Shrine.
- 06Follow the slope and the next statues.
- 07Activate Kegopa Lightroot when reached.
- 08Detour to Ruto Canyon Mine only if you want its ore and chest.
- 09Continue to Kawagom Lightroot.
- 10Proceed to the Abandoned Lanayru Mine for the Master Kohga encounter if the quest is active.
