About this guide

This guide covers the base-game version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Spoilers: The article includes the shrine’s entrance route, cave enemies, trial mechanics, chest reward and completion reward.

Overview

Otak Shrine is a Shrine of Light hidden inside Icefall Foothills Cave in the north-western Hebra Mountains. Its official trial name is Proving Grounds: Traps, and the shrine tests Link’s ability to improvise with limited equipment, environmental hazards and Zonai-style combat traps rather than solve a conventional puzzle.

The shrine is easy to overlook because it is not simply exposed on the mountain surface. The visible shrine marker points to an underground chamber, and the route begins with several layers of ice blocking the cave entrance and inner passages. The surrounding cave is part of the shrine’s practical approach, but it is not itself the shrine interior. Keeping those areas separate is useful when planning the route and when checking whether all nearby loot and enemies have been dealt with.

Location and boundaries

Surface approach: Icefall Foothills

The relevant surface area is Icefall Foothills, an icy part of the far north-western Hebra region. The shrine is not located in a settlement, stable or named building. Its above-ground access point is an ice-blocked cave entrance on the western side of the foothills.

The wider Hebra Mountains contain many neighbouring landmarks, including Rospro Pass, Pikida Stonegrove and other highland locations. Those areas should not be treated as part of Otak Shrine itself. They are useful navigational reference points, particularly when approaching from a Skyview Tower, but the shrine’s local boundary is limited to the cave route and the shrine interior.

Icefall Foothills Cave

Icefall Foothills Cave is the immediate parent location. Its entrance is blocked by a thick sheet of ice, and further ice barriers divide the cave into several sections. The cave should be treated as a separate explorable subarea containing:

The shrine itself begins only after Link melts the final ice obstruction and activates the green shrine entrance. The cave is therefore not part of the Proving Grounds trial, even though its enemies and environmental puzzles form the approach challenge.

Nearby named landmarks and connections

These are neighbouring Hebra locations, not subdivisions of Otak Shrine:

The shrine’s exact relationship to each nearby landmark depends on the player’s approach, so they are best used as regional navigation references rather than as part of the shrine directory. The broader Hebra location directory also lists these areas separately from Otak Shrine.

Access and preparation

Cold-weather protection

The Icefall Foothills area is cold. Link should use cold-resistance armour, such as the Snowquill Set, or consume a meal or elixir that provides cold resistance. A single level of cold resistance is generally enough for ordinary exploration in the area, though stronger protection is more comfortable if the journey includes high-altitude detours.

Fire sources

Bring at least one reliable way to melt ice. Suitable options include:

The cave contains a campfire that can be lit and used to help clear nearby ice. A fire source is also useful against enemies trapped behind or near ice.

The most straightforward regional approach is to travel from Rospro Pass Skyview Tower and glide north-west towards the Icefall Foothills. This avoids a long climb through the Hebra Mountains, although the exact route depends on stamina, weather, available sky islands and whether the player has already activated nearby map facilities.

Reaching the shrine

Follow these steps from the surface entrance.

Approach directory

The sources verify the cave’s major route features, but do not establish separate canonical names for each of these minor internal sections. They are therefore described functionally rather than presented as named locations.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Locate the ice-blocked cave entrance. Look for the entrance in Icefall Foothills at approximately −4429, 3752, 0224. The shrine itself is deeper inside and has slightly different coordinates.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Melt the entrance ice. Use Fire Fruit, a flame weapon, a torch or another heat source. Stand close enough for the fire to affect the ice, but avoid wasting valuable weapons if a torch or Fire Fruit is available.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Enter the first cave section. Continue through the passage. A campfire can be lit to provide heat and help melt nearby obstructions. The cave may contain enemies concealed by or positioned near the ice.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Collect the optional chest if desired. A chest covered by ice contains 10 Bomb Flowers. Zelda Dungeon’s guide notes that a Ruby-fused weapon can allow Link to stand near the chest and melt it safely.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Find the frozen floor. At the rear of the cave, look for a thin layer of ice over a hole. Link can melt it, or break it by jumping on it repeatedly. Melting is safer and more controlled; dropping through the ice is quicker but leads directly into the enemy area below.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Deal with the Bokoblins. The lower chamber contains Blue Bokoblins and Black Bokoblins. If Link has dropped through the floor, he may land in the middle of the encounter. Players who prefer a safer opening can attack from above with arrows, including Bomb Flower-fused arrows.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Melt the final ice barrier. Look towards the wall near the lower chamber and campfire. A smaller ice-covered opening conceals the shrine room. Melt the ice to reveal Otak Shrine.

Reaching the shrine: steps

  1. 01
Activate the shrine. Examine the shrine entrance to create the travel point. This also gives Link a chance to prepare before entering the Proving Grounds arena.

Proving Grounds: Traps

Otak Shrine removes Link’s personal equipment when he enters. This is a standard Proving Grounds rule: armour, weapons, shields, bows and other carried combat equipment are unavailable for the trial. Link must collect the equipment placed inside the arena and use the environment to defeat the Constructs.

The shrine’s design rewards caution. It is possible to fight the Constructs directly, but the arena’s traps can create openings, apply fire damage or defeat enemies without consuming much weapon durability.

Trial equipment

Before engaging the Constructs, search the starting area and collect everything available. The exact equipment layout can be easy to miss if Link immediately runs into the arena. Prioritise:

A bow is especially valuable because some of the traps are activated remotely. It also allows Link to interrupt a Construct’s attack, including a spinning attack from a shield-bearing enemy.

Shrine hazards

Hanging torches

Several torches hang from the ceiling. Link can shoot them down with arrows. Their flames can ignite loose leaves and other burnable material, creating an area of fire that damages nearby Constructs.

Use this tactic when an enemy is standing beneath or beside the hanging torch. Do not fire indiscriminately, since the flames can also damage Link or restrict the route through the arena.

Burnable leaves

The leaves are not merely decoration. Once a hanging torch falls, fire can spread through the loose material and set a nearby Soldier Construct alight. This is particularly useful when Link is under-equipped or trying to separate enemies.

Explosive barrel

An explosive barrel is present in the arena. It can damage enemies, but its position makes it dangerous to use at close range. The explosion is just as capable of harming Link as a Construct, so it is best treated as an optional opportunity rather than the centrepiece of the strategy.

Breakable central pillar

The central stone pillar is cracked. Breaking it causes part of the ceiling above to collapse. If Link can lure a Soldier Construct beneath the falling section, the collapse can damage or defeat it. This is the most distinctive environmental trap in the trial, but it requires enemy positioning and is not always the safest opening move.

Recommended combat order

The shrine’s enemy arrangement can be handled in several ways. The following route prioritises survival and access to better equipment.

---

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Collect the starting equipment. Do not rush into the arena. Pick up the available melee weapon, shield, bow and arrows.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Identify the ranged enemy. If a Construct is positioned to fire at Link, deal with it early or use the arena’s cover. Leaving an archer active while fighting another Construct makes the trial much more dangerous.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Separate the nearest Construct. Move around the platforms and pillars rather than charging into the whole group. A Construct that follows Link away from its allies can be defeated without constant crossfire.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Use arrows to interrupt attacks. A shot to an enemy’s body can create a brief opening. This is particularly useful against a shielded Construct using a spinning attack. The bow also lets Link trigger torches and other environmental hazards from a distance.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Exploit fire when several enemies group together. Shoot down a hanging torch or ignite the leaves when a Construct is nearby. Fire damage is useful for creating space, but avoid standing in the flames.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Use the central pillar only when the position is safe. Break the cracked pillar after luring a Construct beneath the collapse area. Move away immediately, since the falling debris can harm Link.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Take weapons from defeated Constructs. Replace weak starting equipment with the enemies’ dropped weapons. This makes the later stages of the trial more manageable.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Use a shield against close-range attacks. A shield is particularly useful against the final melee enemies. It gives Link time to block, reposition and counterattack rather than relying on uninterrupted strikes.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Confirm that the arena is clear. The exit opens after all the required Soldier Constructs have been defeated. One enemy hidden behind an obstacle or on a raised section can delay completion.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Open the chest. Once the arena is cleared, the chest becomes accessible. It contains a Mighty Construct Bow.

Recommended combat order: steps

  1. 01
Examine the altar. The altar grants a Light of Blessing, completing Otak Shrine.

Enemies

Enemies in the approach cave

They are separate from the shrine’s Soldier Construct trial and can be fought with Link’s normal equipment before entering the shrine. Zelda Dungeon specifically identifies both Blue and Black Bokoblins in the lower cave chamber.

Enemies inside the shrine

The shrine is built around Soldier Constructs. The objective is to defeat all of the Constructs in the arena. One walkthrough describes six Constructs, while the more general shrine references identify the enemy group without presenting a full enemy-by-enemy roster. Because the available sources do not agree consistently on the exact count and variant breakdown, this guide does not assign a definitive number to individual Construct types.

Enemy directory

No named characters, factions, shops, services or law-enforcement personnel are associated with the shrine or its approach in the researched material.

Hazards and useful secrets

Do not enter without a fire source

The outer ice barrier can be opened with several different methods, but entering without any heat source can force a retreat. Fire Fruit is the simplest disposable option, while a torch is economical if Link has one available.

The lower chamber can be attacked from above

Breaking the frozen floor immediately places Link near the Bokoblins. Melting the ice first or attacking through the opening gives more control. Bomb Flower-fused arrows can be effective, although they should be used carefully in enclosed spaces.

Shrine equipment is deliberately limited

The trial is not designed around bringing a powerful weapon into the arena. Link’s inventory is removed, so preparation should focus on health, food, cold resistance for the approach and familiarity with the traps rather than high-damage equipment.

The traps are optional

The shrine can be cleared by ordinary combat. The hanging torches, fire, explosive barrel and falling pillar are opportunities, not mandatory puzzle steps. Players who find the traps unreliable can isolate the Constructs, use bows to stagger them and improve their equipment from enemy drops.

Lore and series context

Otak Shrine is a location unique to Tears of the Kingdom in the researched continuity. It is not a returning shrine from Breath of the Wild, and no earlier-series appearance is associated with it in the available sources.

Its connection to Kato Lightroot reflects the surface-and-Depths structure introduced in Tears of the Kingdom. As with other Shrine of Light and Lightroot pairings, the relationship is geographical: the shrine occupies the surface position while the Lightroot marks the corresponding underground area.

The trial’s theme also fits the game’s expanded emphasis on environmental combat. Rather than presenting a self-contained mechanical puzzle, Otak Shrine asks the player to recognise that the room itself is part of the weapon set. Fire, falling stone, explosive hazards, ranged attacks and enemy drops all contribute to the solution.
