Key takeaways
- Prepare for cold weather The Shrine is in the snowy Hebra wilderness, so use cold-resistance armour, meals or elixirs before travelling there.
- The entrance is high up on an ice pillar A fire-based updraft made with a Hylian Pine Cone is one documented way to reach it. You can also approach from the air, including from Mount Drena, although the latter route may require Tulin’s Gust to bridge the distance.
- The first mechanism uses a log, a stone block and a rocket Attach the log so that the moving block carries it into the target.
- The only treasure chest contains a Zonaite Bow It is in the second room on a raised ledge and is easy to miss if you proceed directly to the final mechanism.
- The final mechanism is a rotating mallet Attach a log to the gear, add a rocket, and activate the construction so the log strikes the switch.
- Completing the Shrine grants a Light of Blessing and makes the Shrine available as a fast-travel point.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, base game Trial: Mallet Smash Region: Hebra Local area: North Tabantha Snowfield, within the Tabantha Tundra Coordinates: Approximately −1404, 3678, 0302 Reward: Light of Blessing Treasure: Zonaite Bow Depths counterpart: U-nazohso Lightroot Type: Shrine of Light This guide covers Oshozan-u Shrine and its immediate approach, not the whole Hebra region, North Tabantha Snowfield or Tabantha Tundra.
Overview
Oshozan-u Shrine is a compact Hebra Shrine built around two related ideas: using Ultrahand-built striking mechanisms and firing rockets to supply the force needed to activate distant targets. Its official trial name, Mallet Smash, is a useful description of the central puzzle. Link constructs oversized rotating mallets from logs, gears and rockets, then uses them to hit switches and open the shrine’s gates.
The Shrine stands on an icy pillar at the north-eastern edge of North Tabantha Snowfield. It is well north of Snowfield Stable, in the wider Tabantha Tundra area. The Shrine is not part of a settlement, dungeon or quest hub, and there are no named residents, shops or faction facilities within the Shrine itself.
Location and boundaries
Oshozan-u Shrine is a surface Shrine in the north-eastern part of North Tabantha Snowfield. The Shrine’s immediate exterior consists of the icy pillar and surrounding snowfield used to reach its entrance. It should not be treated as a separate town or subregion.
The Shrine is positioned north of Snowfield Stable and is associated underground with U-nazohso Lightroot. That Lightroot is the corresponding Depths location, not a second version of the Shrine and not part of the Shrine’s interior.
Named places within or directly associated with the scope
The last three are connections or reference points rather than subareas inside Oshozan-u Shrine. Snowfield Stable is a nearby surface facility, Mount Drena is an alternative aerial approach, and U-nazohso Lightroot is the Depths counterpart.
The relevant hierarchy is
- 01Hebra, the broad regional map area.
- 02Tabantha Tundra, the larger snowy geographical zone.
- 03North Tabantha Snowfield, the local named area containing the Shrine.
- 04Oshozan-u Shrine, the enclosed Shrine interior and its entrance structure.

Reaching Oshozan-u Shrine
From the Hebra surface
The most straightforward general approach is to travel north through the Hebra snowfields towards the north-eastern end of North Tabantha Snowfield. Snowfield Stable is a useful southern reference point, but the Shrine is well north of it. Because the Shrine sits above the surrounding ground on an ice pillar, simply reaching its map position does not always place Link at the entrance.
Zelda Dungeon specifically describes lighting a Hylian Pine Cone to create an updraft, allowing Link to glide up towards the Shrine. A second option is to glide from Mount Drena, though the distance may make Tulin’s ability useful.
Suggested approach checklist
- 01Activate a nearby Skyview Tower or Shrine if one is available to provide a fast-travel point.
- 02Equip cold resistance before entering the exposed snowfield.
- 03Mark the Shrine on the map if you are approaching from a distance.
- 04Look for the ice pillar and the elevated Shrine entrance rather than searching only at ground level.
- 05Use a fire-created updraft or an aerial glide to gain height.
- 06Activate the Shrine before entering if you want it available as a fast-travel location.
About this guide
Major spoilers for the Shrine puzzle and treasure location.
Shrine walkthrough
Oshozan-u Shrine contains a sequence of construction puzzles. The mechanisms are fixed rather than procedurally generated. The main challenge is not combat but understanding the direction in which each log must strike its target.
First room: the moving block
The Rocket propels the block along the track. The attached log then acts as a mallet, striking the target and opening the way into the next room. The important point is the log’s orientation. If it is attached to the wrong face of the block, the construction may travel correctly but fail to make contact with the switch.
Second room: the treasure ledge
The second room contains the Shrine’s optional chest on a raised ledge to the left of the entrance. The chest is not on the critical route, so collect it before solving the final mechanism.
The chest contains a Zonaite Bow. This is a fixed Shrine treasure, not a random drop.
Final room: the rotating mallet
The final mechanism combines a gear, a long log and a Rocket.
The gear spins, carrying the attached log around like a mallet. When the log strikes the target, the final gate opens. Enter the room beyond and examine the green Shrine terminal to complete Oshozan-u Shrine.
Alternative solution
The target mechanisms can also be activated with Bomb Flowers, according to Zelda Dungeon. This is an alternative interaction rather than the intended construction solution, and it may be useful if a built mechanism is awkwardly positioned or has been knocked apart.
First room: the moving block
- 01Enter the first room and locate the long wooden log and the stone block travelling along the track.
- 02Use Ultrahand to attach the log to the side of the block.
- 03Position the log so that, when the block moves along the track, its end will hit the target or switch at the far end.
- 04Attach a Rocket to the rear of the block.
- 05Activate the Rocket.
Second room: the treasure ledge
- 01Pick up one of the longer logs.
- 02Stand the log upright in the gap beneath or beside the raised ledge.
- 03Attach a Rocket to the log.
- 04Stand on the log and activate the Rocket, either by striking it or firing an arrow at it.
- 05As the log rises, step or glide across to the ledge.
- 06Open the chest.
Final room: the rotating mallet
- 01Find the gear near the final target.
- 02Attach the long log to the gear so that the log projects towards the target and the next room, rather than back towards the entrance.
- 03If necessary, add another log or smaller piece to achieve the required reach and shape.
- 04Attach a Rocket to the gear or to the wooden construction.
- 05Check that the Rocket’s thrust will rotate the gear in the direction that sends the log into the switch.
- 06Activate the Rocket.
Rewards and completion
The Light of Blessing is awarded for Shrine completion. Completing the Shrine also restores Link’s health at the conclusion and unlocks the Shrine as a permanent fast-travel point.
The Zonaite Bow is not required to finish the Shrine. Players who are only pursuing completion can proceed directly through the mechanisms, but the bow is worth collecting before activating the final switch because returning to the interior after completion is not the normal way to revisit the treasure.
Oshozan-u Shrine provides two fixed rewards
| Reward | How to obtain it |
|---|---|
| Zonaite Bow | Open the optional chest on the raised ledge in the second room |
| Light of Blessing | Complete the Shrine and examine the final green terminal |
Hazards and practical advice
Cold weather
The approach crosses exposed Hebra snow. The cold-weather hazard is outside the Shrine, but it can cause damage before Link reaches the entrance. Prepare cold resistance before setting out rather than relying on reaching the Shrine quickly.
Height and fall damage
The Shrine entrance and the chest ledge both involve elevation. Use the paraglider rather than stepping blindly from the top of a Rocket-launched log. If Link lands short of the treasure platform, glide towards the ledge rather than dropping directly.
Rocket direction
Rockets activate in the direction of their nose. Before attaching one, rotate it so its thrust will push or spin the construction as intended. A correctly assembled log can still fail if the Rocket is facing sideways or in the wrong direction.
Construction placement
Ultrahand constructions can be moved after attachment. If the first room’s log does not strike the target, detach and reposition it rather than trying to force the block through the gate. The puzzle is based on contact with the switch, not on a particular visual blueprint.
Nearby connections
Snowfield Stable
Snowfield Stable is the principal named surface facility referenced in relation to the Shrine. Oshozan-u Shrine lies well north of it, making the stable a useful preparation and navigation landmark rather than part of the Shrine complex.
Mount Drena
Mount Drena provides a possible aerial approach. From a suitable launch point, Link can glide towards the Shrine, although the distance may require Tulin’s Gust. This is an approach route, not a hidden entrance or a Shrine quest.
U-nazohso Lightroot
U-nazohso Lightroot is the Shrine’s Depths counterpart. It belongs to the underground map layer and is useful when navigating the Depths beneath the region. Activating it does not complete Oshozan-u Shrine, and completing the Shrine does not automatically activate the Lightroot.
Residents, factions and services
There are no documented named residents, ordinary NPCs, shops, businesses, guards or faction facilities inside Oshozan-u Shrine. The Shrine is a self-contained challenge area.
The following categories therefore do not apply within the defined scope:
This does not mean the wider North Tabantha Snowfield is empty. It means that those wider-region features are outside the Shrine’s boundary and should not be presented as part of Oshozan-u Shrine without separate research.
Lore and series context
Oshozan-u Shrine is a Shrine of Light appearing in Tears of the Kingdom. Its trial name is Mallet Smash, and its puzzle expresses that name through rotating logs used as oversized hammers. The Shrine has no documented appearance in an earlier Zelda game and should not be conflated with similarly named Shrines from other games or with locations in Breath of the Wild.
