Key takeaways

  • The normal surface entrance does not work at first Gloom blocks the route into the Lost Woods.
  • Enter through Minshi Woods Chasm, then travel through the Depths and use Ascend beneath Korok Forest.
  • Korok Forest is the functional centre of the area, containing the Great Deku Tree, Hestu, shops, a Goddess Statue, quests and several shrines.
  • The Great Deku Tree is initially incapacitated by Gloom Clearing the corruption reveals the area’s main story rewards and restores the forest.
  • The Master Sword quest is associated with the Great Deku Tree, but the sword itself is not sitting in the forest. The Deku Tree provides information that leads into the wider sword-recovery sequence.
  • The Depths route is not merely a shortcut It is the principal entrance during the forest’s corrupted state and contains its own named locations, Lightroots and temporary Korok encounters.

About this guide

Scope: Base game, Surface and the directly corresponding Depths route beneath the Lost Woods and Korok Forest. This guide treats the Lost Woods as part of the wider Great Hyrule Forest area rather than reducing it to the central Korok Forest. Nearby but separate places such as Woodland Stable, Military Training Camp, Great Fairy Tera and Typhlo Ruins are mentioned only as connections or landmarks, not folded into the Lost Woods itself.

Overview

The Lost Woods are one of *Tears of the Kingdom*’s most deliberately altered locations. In Breath of the Wild, the forest was a surface maze leading directly to Korok Forest. In Tears of the Kingdom, the familiar entrance is blocked by Gloom, and the intended route to the forest’s centre runs beneath it through the Depths. This makes the area a small but important example of the game’s layered geography: the surface, the underground and the story state of the Great Deku Tree all affect how the location works.

The wider Great Hyrule Forest contains the approach through Minshi Woods, the maze-like Lost Woods, Korok Forest, Mido Swamp and the underground areas beneath them. The forest is north-east of Hyrule Field, west of Eldin Canyon and Death Mountain, and east of the Hebra region. The usual approach is along the road north from Woodland Stable.

Great Hyrule Forest

This is the broad regional grouping around the northern forest. It includes the road approach and several named subareas.

Minshi Woods

Minshi Woods is the southern approach to the Lost Woods. The road from Woodland Stable passes through it before reaching the forest entrance. The Minshi Woods Chasm is the key access point for the Depths route.

Lost Woods

The Lost Woods are the enclosed, misty woodland beyond Minshi Woods. In the corrupted progression state, the surface path is blocked by Gloom and does not function as a conventional maze entrance.

Korok Forest

Korok Forest occupies the central part of the Lost Woods. It is the home of the Koroks and the Great Deku Tree, and it contains most of the region’s useful services and named characters.

Mido Swamp

Mido Swamp is a separate wetland area on the north-eastern side of the Great Hyrule Forest. It is connected geographically to the forest but is not part of Korok Forest proper. Its muddy terrain, enemy placements and shrine route make it a distinct exploration space.

Depths beneath the forest

The underground layer mirrors the surface broadly rather than functioning as a simple basement. It includes Minshi Grove, the route towards Korok Forest, Rikonasum Lightroot, the Deku Tree’s underground chamber and the Korok Grove area immediately beneath the forest.

---

The Lost Woods retain the series’ familiar visual language: dense trees, restricted sightlines, drifting mist and a strong sense that ordinary navigation rules do not apply. In Tears of the Kingdom, however, the major geographical idea is vertical. The player is encouraged to stop treating the forest as a flat maze and instead read the map as a stack of connected layers.

The surface entrance lies along the road north of Woodland Stable. The chasm is positioned before the conventional forest entrance, making it a deliberate signpost rather than a hidden late-game secret. Once Link descends, the Depths route beneath the forest gives a clearer sense of the location’s shape. Poes, roots and environmental lighting help point towards Korok Forest, while the surface map can be used to check whether the player is moving beneath the correct area.

The forest itself changes after the Gloom threat is removed. Before that point, the Great Deku Tree is unwell, parts of the forest feel subdued and the story-critical underground chamber is dangerous. Afterward, the area becomes a more conventional settlement and exploration hub.

Route 1: The intended early route through the Depths

This is the reliable route during the initial corrupted state.

The chasm’s published map references vary between guides because of coordinate conventions and map positioning, so the visual landmark is more dependable than copying a single coordinate. It is directly beside the road north of Woodland Stable, before the surface entrance to the Lost Woods.

Route 1: The intended early route through the Depths: steps

  1. 01
Travel north from Woodland Stable through Minshi Woods.
  2. 02
Locate Minshi Woods Chasm, which lies beside the road before the Lost Woods entrance.
  3. 03
Mark Korok Forest or the approximate position of the forest centre on the Surface map before descending.
  4. 04
Jump into the chasm and use Brightbloom Seeds or other light sources.
  5. 05
Follow the underground route towards the Koroks and large tree roots.
  6. 06
    Activate Rikonasum Lightroot.
  7. 07
Find the stone structure beneath the forest.
  8. 08
Stand beneath it and use Ascend.
  9. 09
    Emerge in Korok Forest.
  10. 10
Activate a nearby shrine for a permanent fast-travel point.

Route 2: Surface travel after the forest is restored

After the Gloom crisis is resolved, the Lost Woods become usable from the surface again. The forest can then be entered from the road and explored without making the Depths journey each time. This is particularly convenient for returning to the Great Deku Tree, the shops and Hestu.

Route 3: Fast travel

Once Musanokir Shrine or another shrine in the forest has been activated, fast travel removes most of the access problem. Hestu eventually settles in Korok Forest, so restoring the forest and activating a shrine is useful even if the player has already found him elsewhere.

Minshi Grove

Minshi Grove is the underground counterpart encountered after entering Minshi Woods Chasm. It is dark, uneven and easy to misread if the player heads towards the hotter regions of the Depths instead of following the forest route.

Use the Surface map as a guide. The objective is not simply to travel north-west in a straight line, but to remain beneath the Great Hyrule Forest. Brightbloom Seeds are more useful than relying on temporary torches, and a few spare healing meals are sensible because the route can include Gloom-covered ground and hostile encounters.

Rikonasum Lightroot

Rikonasum Lightroot is the principal navigation landmark beneath Korok Forest. Activating it illuminates the immediate underground area and makes the surface-to-Depths relationship much easier to understand. The Ascend point is near a large stone structure beneath the forest. Guides commonly identify this as the correct exit route into Korok Forest.

Korok Grove and the returning Koroks

During the forest’s corrupted story state, Koroks can be encountered in the Depths, attempting to return to their home. They provide environmental guidance and reinforce the idea that the underground route is part of the forest’s crisis rather than an unrelated dungeon detour.

The underground route also contains the approach to the Great Deku Tree’s roots. After entering Korok Forest, look for the opening inside the Deku Tree that leads downwards.

---

Korok Forest is the central settlement and the most important subarea in the Great Hyrule Forest. It is built around the enormous Great Deku Tree, with Korok dwellings and services arranged around the tree and its roots.

The forest is both a practical hub and a story location. Before it is restored, the Deku Tree cannot properly assist Link and the settlement is affected by the Gloom. After the underground threat is defeated, the forest functions as a place to buy supplies, exchange Korok Seeds, complete side activities and pursue the Master Sword-related main quest.

Named places and facilities

The Great Deku Tree Navel Inn is a free place to sleep, but it does not provide a special temporary heart or stamina effect comparable to some other inns. The General Shoppe sells basic provisions and exploration supplies, while the Spore Store specialises in mushroom-related ingredients.

Spore Store inventory

These are functional shops, not merely decorative buildings. Their stock makes Korok Forest a convenient resupply point for the Depths and for mushroom-based cooking.

The Great Deku Tree

The Great Deku Tree is the guardian and central figure of Korok Forest. At first, Gloom has spread through the tree and leaves it unable to act normally. Link must investigate the source of the corruption rather than simply speaking to the tree for information.

Once the threat is removed, the Great Deku Tree becomes a major source of story information. His dialogue leads into Recovering the Hero’s Sword, the main quest associated with locating the Master Sword. The forest therefore acts as one of the game’s most important narrative checkpoints even though the sword itself is not physically stored there.

Hestu

Hestu exchanges Korok Seeds for inventory expansions. He can increase Link’s capacity for:

Hestu may first be encountered away from the forest, but Korok Forest becomes his permanent late-game home after the relevant progression. His location is near the Great Deku Tree and a shrine once the forest has been restored.

Koroks

The Koroks are the ordinary residents of Korok Forest. They are also the source of the area’s Korok Seed puzzles. Their activities include hiding under rocks, arranging objects, completing timed movement challenges and helping other Koroks reach destinations.

The Korok Seed directory is too large and map-dependent to reproduce reliably as a prose list here. Seeds in the wider Great Hyrule Forest should be tracked by subarea, since a forest-only search can otherwise miss placements in Minshi Woods, Mido Swamp and the Depths approach.

Named Koroks and local quest-givers

Their associated activities include The Secret Room, Walton’s Treasure Hunt and Whirly Swirly Things. These are separate from the Great Deku Tree’s main quest and should not be treated as one combined Korok Forest mission.

---

Musanokir Shrine

Musanokir Shrine is the most useful first checkpoint because it is close to the central forest and provides a fast-travel destination. Its puzzle, Swing to Hit, uses swinging objects and momentum. Activate it as soon as possible after entering the forest, even if you intend to continue directly to the Deku Tree.

Mayachideg Shrine

Mayachideg Shrine is a Shrine of Blessing, meaning the challenge is completed before entering and the interior mainly contains the reward chest and altar. It is associated with the forest’s north-western side.

About this guide

Major spoilers: This section reveals the forest’s main story encounter and its boss.

Riogok Shrine

Riogok Shrine uses force-transfer and connected mechanical interactions. It is positioned towards the southern side of the forest area and is a useful target while exploring the forest perimeter.

A guide listing for the three Korok Forest shrines identifies Musanokir, Mayachideg and Riogok as the principal shrine set within the forest.

---

The forest-clearing encounter is consistently described as a Gloom Hands battle followed by Phantom Ganon beneath the Great Deku Tree.

---

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Enter Korok Forest from Rikonasum Lightroot. Use Ascend beneath the stone structure in the Depths.

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Speak with the Great Deku Tree. The tree’s condition indicates that something below the settlement is causing the corruption.

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Find the opening into the tree’s roots. The route descends from inside the Great Deku Tree.

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Prepare for Gloom. Bring gloom-resistant meals, Sundelion recipes or sufficient healing. The chamber is confined, so shields and reliable close-range weapons are useful.

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Defeat the Gloom Hands. The hands are dangerous in the limited space. Bomb Flowers, elemental attacks and height advantage can help, but avoid allowing them to surround Link.

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Fight Phantom Ganon. Phantom Ganon appears after the Gloom Hands are defeated. His attacks can inflict Gloom damage, so keep moving and use well-timed dodges, parries or ranged attacks.

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Return to the Great Deku Tree. The forest is restored and the Deku Tree can provide the next stage of the Master Sword investigation.

Riogok Shrine: steps

  1. 01
Activate the nearest shrine. Musanokir Shrine is the practical choice for future visits.

Main quest

This quest is tied to the Great Deku Tree and begins after the forest’s immediate crisis has been resolved. It should be distinguished from the separate Dragon’s Tears investigation and from the later physical retrieval of the sword.

Side quests and local activities

These quests use different Korok characters and should be completed separately. Oaki’s activity concerns a hidden room, Walton’s concerns treasure and Kula’s involves a spinning or swirling challenge.

Side quests and local activities

Korok Seed trading

Hestu’s service is not a conventional quest but is one of the area’s most important repeatable activities. Each exchange expands one of Link’s three inventory categories. The number of Seeds required rises over time, so early Seeds are not wasted even if the player plans to return later.

---

Gloom

Gloom is the defining hazard of the corrupted forest. It appears in the route beneath the Great Deku Tree and can reduce Link’s maximum hearts until repaired. Sundelions, gloom-resistant meals and avoiding unnecessary contact are the safest general responses.

Gloom Hands

Gloom Hands are the main threat in the Deku Tree’s underground chamber. They can move quickly and are especially dangerous when Link is trapped between roots or walls. Before descending, improve the arena’s visibility and prepare ranged options.

Phantom Ganon

Phantom Ganon is the boss of the forest-clearing sequence. His attacks combine high damage with Gloom effects. A shield, strong weapon and enough healing are more important than a specialised build.

Mido Swamp

Mido Swamp is a separate hazard area within the wider Great Hyrule Forest. Mud restricts ordinary movement and can make direct approaches awkward. Use trees, platforms, Zonai devices or elevated routes rather than trying to cross every muddy section on foot.

Lost Woods navigation

In the corrupted state, the surface entrance is not a normal maze that can be solved by memorising turns. Attempting to force the route is unproductive because the active progression path is through the Depths. Once the forest is restored, the surface route becomes usable again.

---

The Lost Woods are a recurring Zelda location, but their exact geography and inhabitants differ between games. In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the woods are tied to Korok Forest and the Great Deku Tree. In Tears of the Kingdom, the location’s defining new feature is its relationship with the Depths: the forest can no longer be understood properly from the surface alone.

This is also why the area should not be treated as merely “the Great Deku Tree area”. The approach, the surface maze, Korok Forest, Mido Swamp and the underground route each have different functions, enemies and progression states.
