Key takeaways
- Zora’s Domain is inside Lanayru Great Spring, not a separate region for map-boundary purposes.
- Lanayru Great Spring is larger than the Zora settlement It includes Upland Zorana, Lanayru Road, Ralis Channel, Mipha Court, East Reservoir Lake, Ploymus Mountain, the coast-facing lowlands and numerous caves.
- The regional main quest is “Sidon of the Zora”, which forms part of the larger “Regional Phenomena” objective and leads to the Water Temple.
- The surface, sky and Depths are separate map regions Wellspring Island, the Water Temple and several sky islands belong to Lanayru Great Spring Sky, while the Chasm Under Zora’s Domain belongs to Lanayru Great Spring Depths.
- Several shrines are tied to crystal quests or environmental routes, especially Joniu Shrine, O-ogim Shrine and Kurakat Shrine.
- Rain, slippery surfaces, waterfalls and vertical terrain are the region’s practical challenges. Splash Fruit, sticky equipment, climbing aids, Zora armour and carefully chosen Zonai devices make exploration much easier.
About this guide
Scope: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, base game, Surface and directly associated local areas. Important boundary note: Lanayru Great Spring is not the same thing as Lanayru Wetlands, Mount Lanayru, Lanayru Sea, Lanayru Great Spring Depths or Lanayru Great Spring Sky. Zora’s Domain is a named subarea within the Surface region. The Sky and Depths counterparts are treated separately below rather than being merged into the surface region.
Overview
Lanayru Great Spring is the broad, water-rich region surrounding Zora’s Domain in Tears of the Kingdom. It stretches from the Lanayru Road approaches and Upland Zorana in the west to the coast and Lanayru Sea in the east, with Zora territory, highland rivers, reservoirs, waterfalls and old Zora structures filling the centre.
The region is best known as the setting of the Zora portion of the main story. It contains Zora’s Domain, Mipha Court, Ploymus Mountain, the Ancient Zora Waterworks and the route to the Water Temple in the sky. It also includes a large number of caves, roads, bridges, shrines, wells, ruins and named natural landmarks that are easy to miss if the area is treated as little more than the town and its immediate surroundings.
Lanayru Great Spring is a useful early-to-mid-game destination. It can be visited before beginning the Zora main quest, but the regional story changes the environment, opens or clarifies several routes, and provides access to the Water Temple. The area also rewards vertical exploration: many routes are designed around climbing waterfalls, gliding from high ridges, entering caves below the roads and using the Depths beneath the Zora settlements.
Region boundaries and hierarchy
Lanayru Great Spring is one of the four principal Surface divisions of Lanayru, alongside Lanayru Wetlands, Lanayru Sea and Mount Lanayru. The region’s western approaches overlap visually with the Lanayru Road and Upland Zorana areas, while its eastern side reaches the coast-facing country around Afromsia Coast and Lanayru Sea. The published location hierarchy lists Zora’s Domain beneath Lanayru Great Spring, while Lanayru Great Spring Sky and Lanayru Great Spring Depths are separate counterparts.
For practical exploration, divide the region into these groups:
Western approach
This is the road and foothill country reached from Central Hyrule and the Lanayru Wetlands. Lanayru Road, its east and west gates, the Lanayru Road East Cave, Oren Bridge and the Upland Zorana foothills form the most natural overland entry.
Upland Zorana
Upland Zorana is the rugged western and north-western highland zone. It contains steep cliffs, caves, waterfalls and the Upland Zorana Skyview Tower. It is an important approach to Zora’s Domain, but it should not be confused with Mount Lanayru, which lies farther south-east and has a separate regional classification.
Central Zora waterways
The middle of the region contains Zora’s Domain, Great Zora Bridge, Inogo Bridge, Luto’s Channel, Luto’s Crossing, Ralis Channel, East Reservoir Lake and the waterways around the domain. These areas are closely connected geographically and are central to the regional story.
Southern and eastern highlands
Mipha Court and Ploymus Mountain stand above the domain. The surrounding cliffs provide routes to shrines, caves, waterfalls and high vantage points. Several locations that look like part of Mount Lanayru on the in-game map are classified separately from the Great Spring, so use the map’s region labels rather than appearance alone.
Coast-facing areas
The outer eastern portion includes locations such as Afromsia Coast, Lodrum Headland and Lanayru Sea-facing water. These are associated with the Great Spring in some location lists, but nearby named coastal places may also be categorised under Lanayru Sea. Afromsia Coast is explicitly listed in both classifications.
Geography and landmarks
Lanayru Great Spring is defined by water moving through a mountainous landscape. Rivers emerge from high country, run through channels and reservoirs, and descend in long waterfalls. The Zora have built bridges, roads, channels and monumental structures around this water system.
The most prominent landmark is Zora’s Domain, a tiered settlement built into and above the water. Its central square, throne room, sleeping chamber, inn and shop provide the region’s principal services. Beneath and around the town are submerged or partially flooded structures, including the Ancient Zora Waterworks.
East Reservoir Lake is an important body of water east of the domain. It is connected to the regional quest and can be used as a navigational reference when approaching from the eastern side.
Mipha Court lies high above the domain near Ploymus Mountain. It is a story-important location and a useful landmark when navigating the cliffs above Zora’s Domain.
Lanayru Promenade is a ruined ceremonial route associated with the old Zora landscape. It is both a scenic landmark and the setting for a shrine quest involving a crystal and a mysterious voice.
Named surface locations directory
The following names are verified as part of the Lanayru Great Spring location grouping or one of its listed subareas. A few coastal and boundary locations appear in more than one regional classification.
The broader all-locations directory also identifies Zora’s Domain’s internal locations separately, including its square, shop, inn, throne room and shrine.
Named surface locations directory
Zora’s Domain
Zora’s Domain is the principal settlement of the region and the home of the Zora. It is built in a vertical, aquatic style, with bridges and platforms connecting the main plaza to the upper royal structures.
The settlement is the best place to restock before exploring the wider region. It also acts as the narrative hub for the Zora regional phenomenon. Before the regional quest is resolved, the town and surrounding waterways are affected by the strange conditions spreading through the area. After the story progresses, the environment and the behaviour of several characters change.
Services and buildings
The directory source lists Coral Reef and Hammerhead among Zora’s Domain locations as well as Marot Mart, Seabed Inn, Sleeping Chamber, Throne Room and Zora’s Domain Square. These should be treated as named local features, not automatically as separate shops or services.
Residents and story characters
The principal characters connected with the area include:
Some characters are present in the domain before the regional quest, while others move, become available or change dialogue as the story develops. Sidon, Yona, Dorephan and Jiahto are the most important for progression.
The region is also associated with Purah and the wider “Regional Phenomena” objective, although Purah is not a resident of Lanayru Great Spring. The main quest is assigned through the broader adventure structure rather than being initiated solely by a local Zora character.
Services and buildings
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Marot Mart | the local shop, selling a selection of supplies and equipment. |
| Seabed Inn | the settlement’s inn and a place to rest. |
| Zora’s Domain Square | the main public area and a useful fast-travel reference. |
| Throne Room | the royal seat of Zora’s Domain and a major story location. |
| Sleeping Chamber | associated with the royal household. |
| Mogawak Shrine | the settlement’s shrine, located beneath the domain. |

Access and recommended routes
From Lookout Landing and Central Hyrule
The most straightforward route is east along Lanayru Road. This approach passes through the Lanayru Road gates and eventually reaches the lower country beneath Upland Zorana.
This route is suitable for a first visit because it introduces the region’s terrain gradually.
From Upland Zorana Skyview Tower
The Skyview Tower is the best way to understand the region’s vertical layout. Launching from it reveals Zora’s Domain, the surrounding waterfalls, Ploymus Mountain and much of the route towards the eastern watercourses.
Rain and wet cliffs can make direct climbing unreliable. If the weather is poor, glide towards ledges, use caves to bypass cliffs, or approach the domain along roads and bridges instead of attempting a straight ascent.
From the Lanayru Wetlands
The Wetlands connect naturally with the western and south-western edge of Lanayru Great Spring. This is a useful route if you have already activated shrines or towers in the Wetlands. The transition is gradual, so use named roads and bridges as map references rather than relying solely on regional colour changes.
From the coast
The eastern waterways and coastal landmarks provide an alternative approach. This route is less convenient for a first visit because it can involve long swims, cliffs and enemy camps, but it is useful for reaching remote caves and checking the edges of the regional map.
From Lookout Landing and Central Hyrule
- 01Leave Central Hyrule through the eastern roads.
- 02Follow Lanayru Road towards the east gate.
- 03Use the road, nearby bridges and stable routes to reach the Zorana foothills.
- 04Activate the Upland Zorana Skyview Tower when possible.
- 05Continue through the highlands or follow the main path towards Zora’s Domain.
Main story and progression
“Sidon of the Zora”
The regional story begins as part of the investigation into Hyrule’s Regional Phenomena. In Lanayru, Link works with Sidon to investigate the sludge affecting the Zora and the strange events around the domain.
The location page associates Lanayru Great Spring with “Regional Phenomena” and identifies the regional story as a main quest connected with Purah and Lookout Landing.
Progression changes
The region’s state changes as the Zora story advances. In particular:
The exact order in which Link visits Lanayru and the other regional phenomena is flexible. The game does not require Lanayru Great Spring to be the first regional destination.
Shrines and shrine quests
Lanayru Great Spring contains several Surface shrines, while additional shrines belong to the separate sky region or to neighbouring areas. The most consistently associated Surface shrines are:
The broader shrine lists also include shrines in Lanayru Wetlands and Mount Lanayru. Those should not be counted as Great Spring shrines merely because they are nearby. Nintendo Life’s regional shrine guide, for example, separates Mogawak, Ihen-a, Apogek, Yomizuk, Joniu, Kurakat and O-ogim from Lanayru Wetlands and Mount Lanayru entries.
“The Ralis Channel Crystal”
This shrine quest takes place around Ralis Channel. It involves finding and transporting a crystal through the channel route to activate Joniu Shrine.
Do not confuse this quest with the Lanayru Road crystal quest. They use similar objectives but occur in different parts of the region.
“The Lanayru Road Crystal”
This quest is associated with Lanayru Promenade and O-ogim Shrine. It is listed separately from “The Ralis Channel Crystal” in the region’s quest directory.
“Dyeing to Find It”
The Lanayru Great Spring page lists “Dyeing to Find It” as a shrine quest given by a Steward Construct. The quest is connected with locating a shrine through a colour or visual-identification puzzle rather than the region’s main Zora storyline.
Because this quest is easy to overlook while concentrating on Zora’s Domain, search the wider Great Spring and nearby highlands for the Steward Construct and its associated clues.
Shrines and shrine quests
| Shrine | Area or route | Access notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mogawak Shrine | Beneath Zora’s Domain | Convenient settlement shrine |
| Ihen-a Shrine | Mipha Court and Ploymus Mountain | Reached in the high country above the domain |
| Joniu Shrine | Ralis Channel | Connected to the Ralis Channel Crystal quest |
| Kurakat Shrine | Southern or south-western Great Spring approaches | Requires a shrine quest involving a structure and environmental interaction |
| O-ogim Shrine | Lanayru Road area | Connected to the Lanayru Road Crystal quest |
| Apogek Shrine | Great Spring highlands | Surface shrine in the wider eastern area |
| Yomizuk Shrine | Eastern Great Spring area | Located near the coast-facing side of the region |
“The Ralis Channel Crystal”: A practical method is
- 01Locate the crystal in the Ralis Channel area.
- 02Clear or avoid enemies blocking the channel.
- 03Build a floating platform or boat if the route requires crossing water.
- 04Attach fans or other Zonai devices where necessary.
- 05Bring the crystal to the shrine entrance.
- 06Enter Joniu Shrine for the blessing reward.
“The Lanayru Road Crystal”: The general pattern is
- 01Find the crystal near the ruined promenade.
- 02Follow the beam or quest marker to the shrine location.
- 03Deal with the local enemies and terrain.
- 04Carry or transport the crystal to the shrine.
- 05Enter O-ogim Shrine and collect its blessing reward.
Sky and Depths connections
Lanayru Great Spring Sky
The sky counterpart is a separate region. It includes the route to the Water Temple and several islands reached during the Zora story.
Named locations associated with Lanayru Great Spring Sky include:
The location directory lists these under Lanayru Great Spring Sky, while Mayanas Shrine is grouped with Lanayru Sea Sky rather than the Great Spring Sky proper.
Wellspring Island is the principal approach to the Water Temple. The sky route uses floating water bubbles, low gravity sections, launch points and constructed platforms. It should not be counted as part of the Surface region when compiling a map-completion directory.
Lanayru Great Spring Depths
The Depths counterpart lies below the Surface and is reached through the Chasm Under Zora’s Domain. The Depths have their own Lightroots, gloom, enemy layouts and map classification.
The Chasm is listed both beneath Lanayru Great Spring on the Surface location directory and within Lanayru Great Spring Depths in the Depths hierarchy.
Use Brightbloom Seeds, lightroots and gloom-resistant equipment when exploring below the region. The underground map mirrors the Surface in broad outline, but it is not a literal copy of the surface routes.
Lanayru Great Spring Sky
Enemies and hazards
Lanayru Great Spring’s enemies vary with altitude and progression. Common threats include:
Slippery rain
Rain makes exposed climbing slow and unreliable. Avoid scaling sheer cliffs when the weather is wet unless you have the Froggy armour set, slip-resistant meals or a prepared alternate route.
Water and current
Several channels are deeper or faster than they appear. Swimming across large stretches can consume stamina quickly. Use rafts, boats, floating platforms or Zora armour where appropriate.
Vertical terrain
The shortest route is often not the safest. Look for caves, bridges, waterfalls and ledges rather than climbing directly from the valley floor.
Sludge
During the Zora regional story, sludge contaminates parts of the area. Splash Fruit and water-based attacks are especially useful for clearing it. Sidon’s ability becomes an important later solution, but the initial investigation can be handled with ordinary water sources, Splash Fruit and water-element weapons.
Items and exploration rewards
Lanayru Great Spring contains the usual Surface exploration rewards:
The region is particularly good for collecting fish and water-associated materials, although exact drops vary by location and encounter. Do not treat every chest or enemy drop as fixed. Some materials are ordinary world spawns, while others are placed in specific caves, ruins or quest locations.
Korok exploration
Koroks are placed throughout roads, bridges, high ridges, caves and isolated rock formations. Common puzzles include:
The Great Spring’s elevation changes make Korok checks easier after activating Upland Zorana Skyview Tower. Sweep the region in horizontal bands rather than repeatedly climbing from Zora’s Domain.
Suggested exploration route
For a first comprehensive visit, the following order is efficient:
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Approach from Lanayru Road. Activate shrines and investigate the east and west gates.
- 02Activate Upland Zorana Skyview Tower. Use the launch to identify the domain, highlands and major waterfalls.
- 03Visit Zora’s Domain. Activate Mogawak Shrine, inspect Marot Mart and the Seabed Inn, and speak to the important Zora characters.
- 04Begin the Zora regional story. This gives context to the sludge, the royal family and the routes above the domain.
- 05Explore East Reservoir Lake and the nearby channels. Do not rush directly to the next story marker.
- 06Climb towards Mipha Court and Ploymus Mountain. Search for Ihen-a Shrine and nearby caves.
- 07Investigate Ralis Channel. Complete the crystal quest for Joniu Shrine when prepared.
- 08Return west towards Lanayru Promenade and Lanayru Road. Search for O-ogim Shrine and the Lanayru Road Crystal.
- 09Sweep the Upland Zorana caves. Use the Skyview Tower to find entrances on cliff faces and behind waterfalls.
- 10Enter the Chasm Under Zora’s Domain when equipped for the Depths.
- 11Continue into the sky route only when ready to follow the Zora story towards Wellspring Island and the Water Temple.
- 12Return after the main quest. Changed dialogue, cleared sludge and new traversal options make a second sweep worthwhile.
Lore and series history
Lanayru Great Spring is a recurring setting in the modern open-world Hyrule. In both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, it is associated with abundant water, waterfalls and the Zora. Zora’s Domain sits within the region, and the surrounding architecture reflects the Zora’s relationship with rivers and reservoirs.
The region also appears in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, although that game is treated separately from the main continuity in the source material. The Tears of the Kingdom version should therefore not be merged with its Breath of the Wild or Age of Calamity presentation.
The Japanese name is given as Ranēru Dai Suigen, meaning approximately “Lanayru Great Fountainhead” or “Lanayru Great Water Source”. This fits the region’s role as a major source of Hyrule’s waterways.
