Overview

Kikakin Shrine, also known by its trial name Shining in Darkness, is a puzzle Shrine of Light in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It lies on the eastern side of Mount Drena, in the wider Great Hyrule Forest area, north-west of Korok Forest and south-west of Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower. Its interior is a compact dark maze built around a portable Light and several concealed treasure rooms.

This guide covers the base-game shrine itself and its immediate entrance area. It does not treat Mount Drena, the Great Hyrule Forest or the Depths below as part of Kikakin Shrine proper. The nearby Nikakik Lightroot is a separate Depths location, although it corresponds to the shrine’s surface position.

Location and boundaries

Kikakin Shrine stands outdoors on the eastern side of Mount Drena. Regionally, it is associated with the Great Hyrule Forest, but it is not inside Korok Forest or the Lost Woods. Korok Forest is to the south-east, while Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower is to the north-east.

The shrine’s immediate area is a small exterior approach surrounding the glowing shrine entrance. There is no settlement, shop, stable, quest hub or named resident attached to the shrine itself. The forest, mountain and nearby ruins belong to the wider regional geography and should be treated as neighbouring areas rather than internal shrine subareas.

Not included as part of Kikakin Shrine

Nikakik Lightroot is directly associated with Kikakin Shrine by name and position, but it is a separate location in the Depths rather than an underground extension of the shrine.

Access and routes

Kikakin Shrine is easiest to reach from the northern Great Hyrule Forest area or from Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower.

From Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower

This is the most useful approach if the tower is already active, as the shrine is described as south-west of the tower.

From Korok Forest

The shrine is north-west of Korok Forest, but the intervening forest and uneven terrain make aerial travel or a high vantage point useful.

No special armour, quest or sage ability is required to enter Kikakin Shrine. It is worth bringing:

The shrine provides a portable Light inside, so you do not need to bring Brightbloom Seeds merely to see the puzzle. The trial’s central gimmick is the Light device placed on the floor near the entrance.

From Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower

  1. 01
Launch from Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
Travel south-west over the forest and mountain terrain.
  3. 03
Look for the green shrine glow on the eastern side of Mount Drena.
  4. 04
Land near the entrance and activate the shrine before entering.

From Korok Forest

  1. 01
Leave Korok Forest and travel north-west.
  2. 02
Continue across the forested slopes towards Mount Drena.
  3. 03
Use the shrine marker or Sensor+ if the shrine has not yet been activated.
  4. 04
Approach the glowing entrance from the surrounding hillside.

Interior layout and puzzle design

Kikakin Shrine is a dark maze rather than a sequence of isolated rooms. The interior is deliberately difficult to read at first. The Light lets you identify walls, junctions, spike traps and objects that would otherwise be hidden in the darkness.

The maze contains several optional branches, but only one route is necessary to find the Small Key and reach the end. The main path is surrounded by side corridors containing the shrine’s treasure chests.

The hazards are not enemies in the usual sense. The shrine instead tests cautious movement, spatial memory and the ability to inspect walls and ceilings.

Complete walkthrough

1. Take the Light

At the beginning of the shrine, pick up the Light from the floor. Carry it with you as you explore. It illuminates the maze and makes the hazards easier to identify. The shrine’s trial is significantly more manageable if you keep the Light close rather than leaving it behind at the first junction.

2. Explore the first left-hand route

From the entrance room, move towards the left side and follow the corridor along the left wall. This route leads into the main maze.

You can explore the branches as you go, but avoid rushing around blind corners. Some passages contain fixed spikes, while others lead towards moving spike walls that open and close on a cycle.

3. Collect the Amber chest

In the corridor with spikes, look for a cube-shaped stone block built into the wall. Use Ultrahand to remove the block. Behind it is a concealed treasure chest.

The chest is easy to miss because it is hidden behind the removable block rather than placed openly in a side room.

4. Pass the double spike walls

Continue through the maze until you reach a corridor with two moving spike walls. Watch their movement and pass through when the route is open. The walls close and open repeatedly, so there is no need to force your way through while they are moving towards you.

Beyond this section is a dead-end branch containing another chest.

The Luminous Stone chest is in the dead end beyond the double-sided moving spike section on the right-hand side of the shrine.

5. Find the Small Key

Return from the Luminous Stone branch and continue towards the corridor with a single moving spike wall. Once past it, look for a dead-end area with several stone floor tiles.

Use Ultrahand to lift the middle tile. A chest is hidden beneath it.

This is the essential objective of the maze. The key is not held by an enemy or placed in an obvious central room. It is hidden under the flat middle tile, so inspect the floor whenever the path appears to end.

6. Reach the Zonaite Bow

As you retrace your route, look towards the ceiling for a hole or bright opening above the maze. Position yourself beneath it and use Ascend.

This takes you to an upper ledge containing a chest with:

The Ascend chest is optional, but it is one of the shrine’s five treasures. It is located on an elevated ledge in the middle of the shrine’s interconnected halls.

7. Cross the laser sensors

Return to the lower maze and pass through the corridor with laser beams. Move carefully through the sensors. The laser section is not a combat encounter, but the beams can damage Link if crossed carelessly.

A side branch beyond the sensors contains another chest. Open it to receive:

The Opal chest is in a dead end on the left-hand side of the shrine, beyond the laser sensors.

8. Unlock the final door

After collecting the key, retrace your route until you return to the entrance area. Find the locked door beside the entrance and use the Small Key.

The route can feel confusing because the maze loops around itself. If you lose your bearings, use the entrance glow and the corridors with moving spike walls as landmarks.

9. Claim the Light of Blessing

Enter the final chamber and examine the green shrine terminal. Completing the shrine grants:

The completion also activates Kikakin Shrine as a permanent fast-travel point and restores Link’s health on completion, as with other completed Shrines of Light.

6. Reach the Zonaite Bow

Treasure directory

The shrine contains five verified treasure chests.

These chests are fixed shrine contents, not random drops. The Small Key is a progression item used to open the final door, while the other four chests are optional rewards.

Devices and hazards

The term “Compactor” refers to the shrine’s moving spike-wall mechanism in the shrine’s object listing.

Hazards and practical advice

Fixed spikes

Some spike strips remain in place rather than moving. They are usually positioned along one side of a corridor. Keep the Light pointed ahead and walk rather than sprinting around corners.

Moving spike walls

The moving walls operate on a repeating cycle. Wait for a safe opening instead of trying to tank the damage. If you are collecting every chest, remember that the same moving-wall sections may need to be crossed more than once.

Laser sensors

The laser corridor is easier to cross when approached slowly. Use the Light to identify the beams before moving into the passage. The Opal chest lies beyond this hazard, so do not turn back simply because the first laser section appears to be a dead end.

Losing your way

The maze’s darkness can make every corridor look alike. Useful landmarks include:

A good approach is to complete the key objective first, then return for optional chests. However, collecting the chests while moving through the maze reduces backtracking.

Suggested exploration route

This route includes every fixed chest and avoids treating the optional treasures as random rewards.

Progression and missability

Kikakin Shrine does not have a documented quest prerequisite or story-state variation. It can be entered and completed independently of the regional phenomena and does not contain a boss fight.

The treasure chests are not permanently missable. If you leave after activating the shrine, you can return later and collect any unopened chest. Completing the shrine does not remove the optional treasure rooms.

The only progression-critical chest is the one containing the Small Key. The remaining chest rewards are optional, although they count towards a full shrine clear.

Lore and connections

Kikakin Shrine is one of the surface Shrines of Light established in Tears of the Kingdom. Its trial title, Shining in Darkness, directly describes the central challenge: the player must use a Light to navigate an enclosed maze rather than relying on normal environmental visibility.

Its surface position corresponds to Nikakik Lightroot in the Depths. As with other surface shrine and Depths Lightroot pairings, the reversed naming helps identify the relationship between the two locations. The Lightroot is not part of the shrine interior and should be explored separately.

Kikakin Shrine has no confirmed appearance in Breath of the Wild and is documented as a Tears of the Kingdom location.
