Overview

Kawakanis Lightroot is a Lightroot in the Central Hyrule Depths, beneath the area around North Hyrule Plain and New Serenne Stable. It is best known as the underground counterpart of Sinakawak Shrine, and as a useful staging point for two challenging nearby encounters: an armoured White-Maned Lynel to the east and an Obsidian Frox to the north-east.

The Lightroot itself is a small facility rather than a broad settlement or dungeon. Its importance comes from the map information, fast-travel access and route connections it provides across this section of the Depths.

Geography and boundaries

Kawakanis Lightroot stands in an open section of the Depths rather than inside a named mine, abandoned settlement or large underground ruin. The immediate area is part of Central Hyrule’s western side, close to the underground space beneath North Hyrule Plain.

Kawakanis should not be treated as including New Serenne Stable, Sinakawak Shrine or Elma Knolls Chasm. These are connected or corresponding locations, but they are separate places in different layers or parts of the surface map.

Named locations within the immediate scope

The enemy areas do not appear to have distinct official location names equivalent to the Lightroot, so they are best described by their enemy and relative position rather than given invented names.

What Kawakanis Lightroot does

Approach the glowing root and interact with it to activate it. Activation provides four practical benefits:

The Lightroot does not award a Light of Blessing. That reward belongs to the corresponding surface Shrine of Light, Sinakawak Shrine.

What Kawakanis Lightroot does: steps

  1. 01
Illumination: The surrounding darkness is permanently reduced within the Lightroot’s local radius.
  2. 02
Map data: Nearby Depths terrain is revealed on the Purah Pad.
  3. 03
Travel Point: The Lightroot becomes available for fast travel.
  4. 04
Gloom recovery: Standing under the Lightroot’s light restores hearts damaged by Gloom, functioning as a safe recovery point in the Depths.

Surface counterpart: Sinakawak Shrine

Kawakanis Lightroot corresponds to Sinakawak Shrine, whose name is the reverse of “Kawakanis”. This relationship is consistent with the wider Lightroot system: every Lightroot corresponds to a Shrine of Light on the surface, and the two names are generally reversals of one another.

Sinakawak Shrine is located just north-west of New Serenne Stable in Hyrule Field. It is a separate surface location and should not be counted as part of Kawakanis Lightroot’s local underground directory.

Sinakawak Shrine directory entry

The shrine’s existence is also useful for navigation. If Sinakawak Shrine is already marked on the surface map, its corresponding Lightroot should be directly below it in the Depths. Conversely, activating Kawakanis Lightroot can help identify the shrine’s position on the surface map.

Access and routes

From the surface

The most natural surface reference is New Serenne Stable. Sinakawak Shrine is nearby, but the Shrine itself is not an entrance to the Depths. To reach Kawakanis Lightroot from above, Link must descend through an appropriate chasm or enter the Depths elsewhere and travel underground.

The nearby Elma Knolls Chasm is a practical access point for this part of Central Hyrule. Kawakanis Lightroot is south-west of the Netamnet Lightroot and near the Elma Knolls Chasm area, according to regional location guides.

The exact route can vary according to which chasms and Lightroots have already been activated. The area does not require a quest, dungeon completion or special story state.

From another Lightroot

Kawakanis Lightroot is part of the Central Hyrule network. Netamnet Lightroot lies to the north-east, while other Central Hyrule Lightroots connect the area to the south and east. The surrounding terrain can be easier to cross after several nearby Lightroots have been activated, because their illumination overlaps and removes much of the need for Brightbloom Seeds.

A paraglider is useful for crossing sudden drops and broken terrain, while Zonai vehicles can make the longer Depths approaches safer. No particular vehicle or ability is mandatory once Link has entered the Depths.

From the surface: A useful route is

  1. 01
Enter the Depths through Elma Knolls Chasm.
  2. 02
Activate any convenient Lightroot first if the surrounding darkness is severe.
  3. 03
Travel towards the Kawakanis marker, following open ground and avoiding unnecessary detours towards the nearby Lynel.
  4. 04
Activate Kawakanis Lightroot as soon as it comes into view.
  5. 05
Use the newly revealed map to plan further travel towards Netamnet Lightroot or the Ridge Depths.

Nearby enemies and hazards

Armoured White-Maned Lynel

An armoured White-Maned Lynel is located east of Kawakanis Lightroot, near an Ascend point. This is one of the most dangerous encounters in the immediate area. Depths Lynels can have rock armour, which must be broken before normal attacks can deal effective damage. White-Maned Lynels are high-level enemies, and the Depths version is specifically reported as being clad in rock armour.

The Lynel can provide valuable monster parts and weapons when defeated, but it is not required to activate the Lightroot.

Obsidian Frox

An Obsidian Frox is reported north or north-east of Kawakanis Lightroot in the Ridge Depths. One guide places it directly north of the Lightroot, while other regional descriptions place it north-east or within walking distance of the Lightroot. These descriptions refer to the same nearby Frox territory rather than establishing a separate named subarea.

The Obsidian Frox is a large boss-class enemy. Its combat arena is open enough for climbing, gliding and repositioning, but the darkness and nearby Gloom make preparation important.

General Depths hazards

The local area may contain ordinary Depths enemies, Gloom-covered ground and uneven terrain. The evidence consulted confirms the major Lynel and Frox encounters, but does not establish a complete fixed list of every minor enemy, ore deposit or randomly placed item around the Lightroot. Those details should therefore be treated as variable rather than presented as a canonical local directory.

Recommended exploration route

For a first visit, the safest order is:

Recommended exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Enter through Elma Knolls Chasm or another convenient Central Hyrule chasm.
  2. 02
Activate the nearest Lightroot if travelling through unlit terrain.
  3. 03
Approach Kawakanis Lightroot from the south-west, keeping the map open when possible.
  4. 04
Activate Kawakanis Lightroot before exploring east or north-east.
  5. 05
Do not immediately approach the Lynel unless Link is equipped for an armoured Lynel fight.
  6. 06
Explore north or north-east only after stocking healing items and ensuring the area is adequately lit.
  7. 07
Return to the Lightroot after fighting the Obsidian Frox or collecting nearby materials.
  8. 08
Use the Lightroot as a fast-travel point for later visits to the Lynel, Frox or surrounding Central Hyrule routes.

Progression and missability

Kawakanis Lightroot is available as soon as Link can enter the Depths. It is not tied to a regional phenomenon, a main quest completion state or a specific companion ability.

The location is not permanently missable. If Link passes it during an early exploration trip, it remains available for activation later. The nearby Lynel and Obsidian Frox are also useful as repeatable combat and material targets rather than one-time story events.

Activation does not appear to change the area’s enemies or unlock a separate mission. Its principal progression effect is practical: it improves visibility, reveals the map and creates a fast-travel point.

Lore and trivia

Kawakanis is part of the game’s deliberate surface-Depths correspondence system. Its connection with Sinakawak Shrine demonstrates two design rules used throughout Tears of the Kingdom:

This makes the surface map a navigation tool for the Depths. A player who has found Sinakawak Shrine can use it to predict Kawakanis Lightroot’s approximate position, while an activated Kawakanis Lightroot can help identify the shrine above.
