About this guide
Base-game guide for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Spoilers: This guide reveals the shrine’s complete puzzle layout, treasure and solution.
Overview
Sinakawak Shrine is a Shrine of Light in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Its trial, “An Uplifting Device,” teaches the practical use of hot-air balloons, combining balloons with candles, torches and Flame Emitters to lift Link and transport heavy objects.
The shrine stands in North Hyrule Plain, directly northwest of New Serenne Stable in the wider Hyrule Field area. It is a surface shrine, not a cave or sky-island shrine, and has a corresponding Depths location, Kawakanis Lightroot. Its main rewards are one Opal from an optional treasure chest and one Light of Blessing for completing the shrine.
Location and boundaries
Sinakawak Shrine’s actual scope is the shrine interior and its entrance platform. The nearby New Serenne Stable is a separate location and should not be treated as part of the shrine itself. The stable is useful as a navigation reference, but its services, characters and activities belong to the stable rather than to Sinakawak Shrine.
The shrine is in North Hyrule Plain, an area associated with the broader Hyrule Field region. It is also on a natural route towards Hebra and is commonly encountered while travelling north-west during the early stages of the Regional Phenomena quest line.

Reaching Sinakawak Shrine
The simplest approach is to travel to New Serenne Stable and look to the north-west. The shrine is directly nearby and is visible from the surrounding plain. It can also be reached from the direction of Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower, although the stable is the more useful ground-level reference.
No quest, dungeon completion or special equipment is required to enter. You need access to the shrine entrance and the Ultrahand ability, which is obtained very early in the game. The shrine supplies the relevant construction materials, so you do not need to carry your own Zonai Devices into it.
Shrine layout and puzzle logic
Sinakawak is divided into two main chambers.
The first chamber is a vertical tutorial area. It introduces the basic balloon construction and then requires Link to send a heated balloon into a ceiling switch.
The second chamber contains two differently sized ancient orbs. The smaller orb opens the way to the shrine altar, while the larger orb opens a side passage containing the treasure chest. The two orb mechanisms are separate, meaning the chest can be collected before completing the shrine.
The shrine’s central lesson is that a balloon alone does not rise. It must be heated. The supplied candles, torches and Flame Emitters all provide suitable heat sources.
Walkthrough
1. Build the first lifting platform
At the beginning of the shrine, cross the initial gap using the wooden board supplied near the entrance. The board can be moved or fused if necessary, and it will reappear if destroyed or removed from its original position.
The construction does not need to be perfectly symmetrical. The important points are that the heat source is beneath the balloon and that Link has a nearby ledge to reach when the platform rises. A wall-side placement makes the jump easier.
2. Activate the ceiling switch
The next locked gate has an orange switch on the ceiling above it.
Use Ultrahand to make a small lifting device:
The device does not need to carry Link. This is a remote mechanism, so let it rise by itself while you remain safely below. The switch and gate demonstrate that balloons can be used as temporary moving tools, not just as transport for the player.
3. Reach the chamber with the orbs
Proceed through the opened gate and descend into the next chamber. You can use the ladder or glide down.
The two orbs are not interchangeable. The smaller orb belongs in the smaller socket, while the larger orb belongs in the larger socket. The sockets control different gates.
4. Carry the smaller orb upwards
The smaller orb is surrounded by candles. Build a lifting platform capable of carrying it:
If the orb or platform catches on the surrounding structure, adjust the angle with Ultrahand before launching. The lattice above the lower floor can help catch or support the construction, and the chamber provides enough room to make another attempt if the first device drifts.
Putting the smaller orb into its socket opens the passage to the shrine’s altar. You can now complete Sinakawak Shrine, but the optional chest requires one further task.
5. Retrieve the larger orb for the Opal
The larger orb is located near several active Flame Emitters. It is heavier than the smaller orb, so the basic candle-and-balloon arrangement is less convenient.
The larger socket opens the portcullis to the shrine’s optional chest. Open the Stone Chest to receive an Opal. This chest is fixed shrine content, not a random drop.
The orb’s gate remains open after activation, so you do not need to keep the large orb in place while collecting the reward.
6. Claim the Light of Blessing
After placing the smaller orb in its socket, go through the opened passage to the altar. Interact with the terminal in front of the Rauru and Sonia Statue to receive the shrine’s Light of Blessing.
Completing the shrine also activates it as a fast-travel point.
1. Build the first lifting platform: In the next section
- 01Place a wooden board flat on the floor.
- 02Attach a candle or torch near the centre of the board.
- 03Attach a balloon above the heat source.
- 04Move the completed platform close to the wall or the higher ledge.
- 05Stand on it and wait for the balloon to lift the platform.
- 06Jump off onto the upper level.
2. Activate the ceiling switch
- 01Attach a candle or torch to a balloon.
- 02Position the device beneath the orange ceiling switch.
- 03Release it and allow the heated balloon to rise.
- 04The balloon touches the switch and opens the gate.
4. Carry the smaller orb upwards
- 01Attach a candle or another supplied heat source to a wooden board.
- 02Attach the smaller orb to the board.
- 03Attach a balloon above the heat source.
- 04Ride the platform upwards.
- 05When you reach the upper level, detach the orb.
- 06Place it in the smaller concave socket.
5. Retrieve the larger orb for the Opal: A reliable method is
- 01Use Ultrahand to attach one of the supplied Flame Emitters to the larger orb.
- 02Attach a balloon above the Flame Emitter.
- 03Activate the construction so the Flame Emitter heats the balloon.
- 04Allow the device to lift the large orb towards the upper level.
- 05Use the ladder, glide route or Ascend opportunity to return to the higher platform.
- 06Detach the large orb from the lifting device.
- 07Place it into the larger socket.
Rewards and collectibles
The Opal is the only treasure chest item recorded inside Sinakawak Shrine. The shrine does not contain a boss, combat reward, armour piece or unique weapon.
Rewards and collectibles
| Reward or item | How to obtain | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Opal | Open the Stone Chest behind the gate controlled by the larger orb | Optional fixed chest |
| Light of Blessing | Activate the terminal at the shrine altar | Main completion reward |
Practical tips
Use the wall to control balloon platforms
Balloon platforms can drift or rotate. Building beside a wall gives the platform a predictable route and provides an easy place to jump off. This is particularly useful in the first chamber.
Do not overbuild
The shrine provides simple parts because the intended solution is straightforward. A board, one heat source and one balloon are generally enough for the early lifting puzzles. Adding unnecessary parts can make the device unstable.
Use Flame Emitters for the large orb
The large orb is easier to lift with a Flame Emitter than with a single candle. Attach the emitter directly to the orb and place the balloon above it. The Flame Emitter gives the balloon enough heat to carry the heavier object.
Collect the Opal before leaving
The larger-orb route is optional and easy to overlook because the smaller orb opens the path to the altar. Check the side gate before claiming the Light of Blessing if you want the shrine’s full reward.
Lore and design notes
Sinakawak Shrine is one of the game’s clearest demonstrations of how Zonai Devices interact with ordinary objects. The shrine progresses from a simple balloon platform, to an automated switch mechanism, and finally to a heavier construction using a Flame Emitter. In this way, the trial teaches the player to apply the same idea at increasing scale rather than introducing several unrelated mechanics.
The shrine’s internal structure also reinforces its name. The phrase “An Uplifting Device” describes both the literal balloon machines and the broader objective of carrying objects upwards through the shrine.
