About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Find the Fifth Sage and Secret of the Ring Ruins progression, the Thunderhead Isles approach, and the shrine’s full combat trial.

Overview

Joku-usin Shrine is a Shrine of Light hidden within the Thunderhead Isles, the storm-shrouded sky-island chain above the Faron region in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Its formal trial name is Proving Grounds: Short Circuit. Unlike a conventional puzzle shrine, it removes Link’s equipment and asks him to improvise with basic weapons, a Shock Emitter and the shrine’s metal flooring.

Its principal reward is a Light of Blessing, while the optional treasure chest contains an Electro Elixir.

The shrine has two distinct challenges

  1. 01
Reaching the hidden shrine chamber from the Thunderhead Isles’ mine-cart rails.
  2. 02
Clearing a Proving Grounds combat arena using electricity and conductive surfaces.

Scope and location boundaries

This guide covers Joku-usin Shrine itself, its immediate approach from the surrounding Thunderhead Isles platforms, and the machinery required to enter it. It does not treat the entire Thunderhead Isles as part of the shrine. The wider island chain contains separate islands, Zonai devices, enemies, treasure and other points of interest, including Joku-u Shrine on Dragonhead Island. Joku-u Shrine is a separate location and should not be confused with Joku-usin Shrine.

Not included as part of Joku-usin Shrine

This distinction matters because the shrine’s entrance is easy to find once the surrounding storm has been cleared, but its actual interior is a separate enclosed trial.

Geography and immediate surroundings

Joku-usin Shrine is located in the Thunderhead Isles, a group of sky islands above Faron. The shrine is not placed openly on the upper surface of a large island. Instead, the entrance is concealed within a chamber that must be reached from below using rails and a simple Zonai vehicle.

The key geographical feature is the vertical relationship between the rails and the shrine. Link does not normally climb to the visible exterior and enter through a conventional doorway. Instead, he rides along the rails and Ascends through the ceiling when positioned below the shrine chamber.

Nearby but separate locations

The last three are useful in the recommended quest route, but they are not part of the shrine’s local boundary.

Access and progression

Most players will encounter Joku-usin Shrine while progressing through Find the Fifth Sage and, more specifically, Secret of the Ring Ruins. One established route is:

This is the intended story context described by several walkthroughs.

Is the quest strictly required?

The shrine is associated with the storm-covered Thunderhead Isles and the Fifth Sage storyline. The exact practical requirement can vary depending on how the player reaches the islands and whether the storm has already been cleared. Guides generally present the shrine as part of the Secret of the Ring Ruins route rather than as an isolated early-game shrine. For a reliable, low-friction visit, progress through that quest sequence first.

This guide therefore treats the quest route as the recommended progression state, rather than claiming that every possible sequence break is impossible.

Reaching the shrine from Popla Foothills Skyview Tower

The Thunderhead Isles are separated from the surface by considerable vertical distance, and the storm can make visual navigation difficult before the relevant quest progression has been completed. The shrine’s position is usually easier to identify from the map or by locating the nearby rails than by trying to spot the shrine entrance directly.

Reaching the shrine chamber

The entrance puzzle is an Ultrahand construction task rather than a shrine trial.

Materials

The nearby area provides the essential construction materials:

The common solution is a T-shaped platform. One board forms the horizontal section, while another is attached vertically so that the construction can sit between or across the rails. The Fan is attached at the rear, pointing in the direction of travel.

Practical construction advice

---

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Find the rails below the shrine chamber. If you can see the shrine but cannot reach its entrance, descend rather than continuing to climb around the upper island.

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Collect the wooden boards. Place one board horizontally and attach another board to its centre or underside, creating a broad T-like shape.

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Position the vehicle on the rails. The vertical part of the construction should help keep the platform aligned between the rails.

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Attach a Fan. Place the Fan at the back of the vehicle with its airflow pushing towards the shrine chamber.

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Activate the Fan and ride forwards. Keep Link on the platform as it travels along the rails.

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Watch for the area directly underneath the shrine. When the vehicle passes beneath the chamber, stop or dismount at a suitable point.

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Use Ascend. Aim at the ceiling above Link. When the green Ascend indicator confirms a valid route, rise into the shrine’s entrance area.

Step-by-step entrance route

  1. 01
Examine the shrine. This activates Joku-usin Shrine and creates the normal fast-travel point.

Shrine interior: Proving Grounds: Short Circuit

Entering Joku-usin Shrine triggers the Proving Grounds rules. Link’s carried equipment is removed temporarily, leaving him dependent on weapons and devices placed inside the trial.

The objective is to defeat every Construct in the arena. The trial’s title, Short Circuit, refers to its intended solution: use a Shock Emitter and conductive metal flooring to distribute electrical damage.

Equipment directory

The following named or identifiable equipment is specifically associated with the shrine’s trial:

The sticks are available near the entrance, while the Shock Emitter is found towards the rear or opposite side of the arena. The Electro Elixir is in the reward chest after the enemies have been defeated.

How the electrical mechanic works

A Shock Emitter can be attached to a weapon with Fuse. When used against enemies standing on the metal floor, the electrical effect can spread through the conductive surface and strike nearby Constructs.

This lets Link attack one enemy while the electrical effect damages others. Several guides describe the metal floor as the central feature of the shrine’s combat solution.

Full walkthrough

1. Enter and collect the starting weapons

At the beginning of the trial, move immediately to the nearby weapon racks or floor items.

Do not spend too long fighting with the basic weapons if you can avoid it. Their main purpose is to give Link a usable weapon before he reaches the Shock Emitter.

2. Reach the Shock Emitter

Move around the arena towards the opposite side or rear section. The Shock Emitter is placed near the altar-side area.

The important objective is to retrieve the device and fuse it before committing to a prolonged fight.

3. Fuse the Shock Emitter to the Long Stick

Open the Fuse ability and attach the Shock Emitter to the Long Stick.

This creates a long-range electric weapon. The long handle is useful because it lets Link strike from outside some enemies’ immediate attack range while still making contact with the conductive floor.

If the Long Stick breaks, use the Wooden Stick as a replacement. You can also fuse enemy parts to the remaining weapon, although the electric weapon is the most direct way to exploit the shrine’s layout.

4. Draw enemies onto the metal floor

The arena contains enemies at different positions, including ground-level Constructs and enemies positioned higher up. The metal floor is most useful when multiple Constructs are standing on it at once.

Avoid rushing into the middle of a group. The electrical effect is valuable because it reduces the need to fight every Construct independently.

5. Deal with elevated enemies

Some enemies are positioned above the main floor and may use bows. If they remain after the ground-level Constructs are defeated, use Ascend to reach their platforms where possible.

Zelda Dungeon’s guide specifically recommends using Ascend to reach enemies with bows.

6. Replace broken equipment when necessary

Proving Grounds shrines are designed around improvisation. If the fused weapon breaks:

The shrine does not require a particular weapon to finish. The Shock Emitter is the intended shortcut, but ordinary melee attacks remain possible.

7. Confirm that the arena is clear

The exit opens only after all Constructs have been defeated. If the altar area remains sealed, check:

The exact enemy arrangement is fixed for the shrine, not a procedurally generated encounter. The combat challenge is therefore repeatable once the player understands the arena layout.

8. Claim the chest

After the final Construct is defeated, the exit opens towards the altar chamber.

This is the shrine’s optional treasure reward. It is not the main completion reward, so a player who leaves before opening the chest may still have completed the shrine but will not have collected all of its listed treasure.

9. Examine the altar

Interact with the altar or statue in the reward chamber to receive:

The Light of Blessing is automatically added to Link’s shrine-completion rewards. Four Lights of Blessing can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.

---

4. Draw enemies onto the metal floor: A safe pattern is

  1. 01
    Attract one or two enemies.
  2. 02
Retreat onto or beside the metal floor.
  3. 03
    Wait until they cluster.
  4. 04
Strike with the Shock Emitter weapon.
  5. 05
Move away if the remaining enemies begin surrounding Link.

Rewards and inventory

The Electro Elixir is a fixed reward rather than a random drop. Construct materials, by contrast, come from defeated enemies and are ordinary combat loot.

Hazards and common mistakes

Mistaking Joku-usin Shrine for Joku-u Shrine

The names are similar, but the shrines are separate:

Do not mark one as complete when searching for the other.

Searching for a normal entrance

The shrine is reached from below. If the visible structure appears inaccessible, locate the rails and use a Fan-powered platform followed by Ascend.

Entering the trial without a plan

Because Link’s equipment is removed, the opening moments can feel more dangerous than a normal shrine. Run for the Shock Emitter rather than attempting to defeat the whole arena with the starting sticks.

Ignoring the metal floor

The metal floor is not merely decorative. It is the main reason the shrine provides a Shock Emitter. Bring enemies onto it before attacking whenever practical.

Forgetting the chest

The Electro Elixir is in the altar chamber after the combat section. It is easy to interact with the altar immediately and leave without opening the chest.

Failing to check upper platforms

If the exit does not open, an elevated Construct may still be alive. Use Ascend to inspect the upper areas.

Suggested exploration route

For a shrine-collection route, activate the shrine as soon as you reach the chamber, then complete the trial. This gives you a fast-travel point and avoids repeating the rail construction if you later return for the chest or nearby exploration.
