Key takeaways

  • Isisim Shrine is inside YunoboCo HQ East Cave, not at a free-standing surface entrance.
  • Its trial is Proving Grounds In Reverse, a stripped-equipment combat shrine.
  • The principal access requirement is Yunobo’s ability, obtained during the Goron City storyline.
  • You need flame protection in the cave, such as Flamebreaker equipment or Fireproof Elixirs.
  • Recall is the most important ability inside the shrine, allowing you to reverse the motion of thrown Time Bombs and rotate a large gear.
  • The reward is a Light of Blessing, with a Magic Rod in the shrine chest.

About this guide

Spoilers: This guide covers the route to Isisim Shrine, its Proving Grounds trial, enemies, treasure and access requirements.

Overview

Isisim Shrine is a Shrine of Light in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is found in YunoboCo HQ East Cave, in the Eldin Canyon region north of Goron City. Unlike a conventional puzzle shrine, it is a combat-and-resourcefulness challenge titled “Proving Grounds: In Reverse”. Entering the shrine removes Link’s equipped weapons, shields and armour, leaving him to use only the equipment and environmental tools supplied inside.

The shrine’s name can be misleading because the actual entrance is not in the open landscape. The shrine is buried behind Hard Sediment and red rocks inside the cave system, so finding its map marker is only part of the task. Access normally requires progress in the Yunobo of Goron City main quest, because Yunobo’s rolling ability is needed to destroy the obstructing red rock. The cave’s intense heat also requires fire protection.

Location and boundaries

Isisim Shrine

The shrine itself is a small enclosed shrine space containing the Proving Grounds challenge, its enemy arena, a treasure chest and the altar chamber. It should be treated as a distinct location from the surrounding cave.

YunoboCo HQ East Cave

The cave is the shrine’s immediate access area. It lies near YunoboCo HQ and contains the buried shrine, red rock barriers, mine-cart routes and other hostile cave encounters. Guides commonly describe the shrine as being directly north of Goron City and inside the eastern cave associated with YunoboCo HQ.

Eldin Canyon

Eldin Canyon is the wider regional setting. Isisim Shrine is not a shrine in Death Mountain’s summit area, nor is it part of Goron City itself. Goron City, YunoboCo HQ, the cave and the shrine are neighbouring locations with separate boundaries.

Misisi Lightroot

The corresponding location in the Depths is Misisi Lightroot. It is a separate Depths location rather than an extension of the shrine interior. Activating one does not turn the other into the same map area, although their positions correspond vertically.

Getting to Isisim Shrine

Requirements

The cave is hot enough that Link requires fire protection. Flamebreaker equipment and Fireproof Elixirs are suitable solutions. The cave route also involves red rock, so a weapon fused with a rock or boulder is useful if Yunobo’s ability is unavailable for a particular obstruction.

Route from the Goron City side

A Fire Like encountered near the route can be useful rather than merely an obstacle. One guide notes that defeating it may provide a chest containing a stone-based weapon, which is helpful if Link arrives without a suitable rock-breaking tool.

Route from Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower

A practical alternative is to launch from Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower and glide north towards the YunoboCo HQ area. This is useful for reaching the general vicinity quickly, but it does not remove the cave’s access requirements. Link still needs to enter the cave, cross the blocked sections and deal with the heat.

Can the shrine be reached without Yunobo?

The intended route requires Yunobo’s ability to destroy the red rock blocking the cave. Glitches or unusual movement techniques may allow experienced players to bypass the intended obstruction, but these are not normal progression routes and are not required for completion. For a standard playthrough, treat Yunobo’s ability as a prerequisite. The shrine is therefore available before the entire Eldin storyline is finished, but not normally before the relevant portion of Yunobo of Goron City.

Route from the Goron City side

  1. 01
Travel north from Goron City towards the YunoboCo HQ area.
  2. 02
Locate the mine-cart and trolley route near the YunoboCo facilities.
  3. 03
At the trolley stop, use a cart or another suitable vehicle on the available rail.
  4. 04
Leave the rail route when the path reaches the blocked section.
  5. 05
Use Yunobo’s rolling ability to destroy the red rock barrier.
  6. 06
Enter the cave and equip your flame-resistant gear or consume a Fireproof Elixir.
  7. 07
Defeat or avoid the hostile cave enemy near the entrance.
  8. 08
Break through the remaining rock barriers. Rock-fused weapons, Yunobo’s ability and nearby explosives can all help.
  9. 09
Continue through the cave until the green shrine glow appears.
  10. 10
Activate the shrine before entering. This creates a fast-travel point and lets you retry the trial without repeating the cave route.

Trial design

Isisim Shrine removes Link’s outside equipment on entry. This is a standard Proving Grounds rule: the challenge tests how well the player can use the weapons, devices and abilities provided in the arena rather than relying on a fully upgraded inventory.

The phrase “In Reverse” refers to the shrine’s intended movement pattern. Instead of simply fighting upwards through a conventional room, Link uses the shrine’s moving mechanisms to reverse or manipulate the arena’s machinery. The central tools are:

The shrine is much easier if you treat its hazards as weapons. The bombs are not just traps, and the gear is not merely scenery. Both can be manipulated to create openings and reach higher platforms.

Shrine inventory

The following equipment is reported within the trial:

The exact condition of some weapons can vary according to the shrine’s fixed internal equipment layout, but the key progression is consistent: begin with weak wooden equipment, defeat Constructs, take their better weapons and use Recall to control the machinery and bombs.

Recommended preparation inside the shrine

At the entrance, do not rush through the archway. Collect the available equipment first.

GameWith specifically recommends using the wooden stick as the initial shield-compatible weapon and the thicker stick as a stronger alternative.

Ranged optionBowUseful against Constructs on higher platforms
AbilityRecallEssential for reversing bombs and the central gear

1. Collect the starting equipment

At the beginning of the shrine, pick up the Thick Stick, Wooden Stick and Old Wooden Shield. Equip the wooden stick and shield together if you want a defensive opening. Keep the thick stick available for stronger attacks.

Do not waste time trying to preserve your outside equipment. The shrine has already removed it, and the internal weapons are sufficient.

2. Take the left-hand ramp

Move through the entrance and head up the first ramp on the left. This route leads towards the first Construct and gives you a better view of the arena than charging directly through the centre.

The first enemy can be defeated with ordinary melee attacks. If you are comfortable with Recall, however, wait for it to throw a Time Bomb and reverse the bomb’s movement. This can damage the Construct while keeping Link out of immediate danger.

3. Use Recall on the first bomb

The early Constructs use Time Bombs as weapons. When a bomb is thrown, target it with Recall and reverse its trajectory. Timing is important:

Do not stand too close to a bomb when it explodes. A shield can help if the timing is imperfect, but the safest method is to reverse the projectile and retreat.

3. Use Recall on the first bomb: steps

  1. 01
Wait for the Construct to release the bomb.
  2. 02
Activate Recall while the bomb is still travelling.
  3. 03
Reverse its movement so it returns towards the thrower.
  4. 04
Cancel Recall or allow the bomb to continue until it detonates.

4. Deal with bombs from the rear

Additional bombs may be thrown from the right or rear side of the arena. Keep checking the upper platforms rather than focusing only on the nearest Construct.

Recall is usually the most efficient answer because it turns the enemy’s own attack against it.

5. Reverse the large gear

After dealing with the lower enemies, locate the large rotating gear. Use Recall on the gear to reverse its motion.

This creates a route to the upper level. The exact timing is less demanding than the bomb sections, but Link must board or cross the gear while it is moving in the useful direction. If you miss the timing, wait for another rotation instead of jumping recklessly.

The gear is the shrine’s defining navigation puzzle. It explains the “In Reverse” title and provides the intended route towards the final group of Constructs.

6. Defeat the upper Constructs

The upper section contains Constructs with more useful equipment, including a spear and a larger weapon. Defeat the spear-carrying Construct first if possible, then collect its spear.

A spear gives Link safe reach and is especially useful against enemies positioned on narrow platforms. Once you have it:

The remaining Construct may use bombs or ranged attacks. Keep the shield ready and do not let yourself become trapped between the enemy and the arena wall.

6. Defeat the upper Constructs: steps

  1. 01
    Equip the spear.
  2. 02
Attack the Construct carrying the larger weapon.
  3. 03
Keep moving to avoid the bow-wielding Construct.
  4. 04
Use the arena’s height and cover to separate the enemies.
  5. 05
Collect dropped weapons as soon as the area is safe.

7. Finish the last enemy

For the final Construct, the shield and Wooden Stick combination is a safe choice. Raise the shield if the Construct prepares a bomb attack, then punish it after the explosion or missed strike.

You can also use a stronger weapon taken from one of the earlier enemies. Because the shrine ends once every Construct has been defeated, there is no reason to conserve the supplied weapons.

8. Claim the rewards

Once all Constructs are defeated, the exit door opens. Enter the altar chamber and open the treasure chest to receive a Magic Rod. Then examine the shrine altar to obtain the Light of Blessing.

---

Constructs

The shrine contains several Zonai Constructs distributed across different elevations. Their weapons and attack patterns are part of the challenge rather than random overworld encounters.

Because the trial resets Link’s equipment, armour bonuses and outside weapon upgrades are unavailable. Positioning, Recall and the supplied shield matter more than raw attack power.

Practical combat tips

---

Shrine chest

The Magic Rod is the shrine’s fixed treasure reward. It is not a random drop or a choice between several items.

Completion reward

There is no separate shrine quest attached to Isisim Shrine, and the trial does not require an external crystal escort or a rotating procedural layout.

Outside the shrine

The cave route may contain ordinary enemy drops, ore and local materials, but these are separate from the shrine’s fixed reward structure. They should not be confused with shrine collectibles. The most consistently documented additional acquisition relevant to the route is a stone-related weapon available from a chest near a Fire Like, if the player needs help breaking the cave’s rock barriers.

---

Intense heat

The most important hazard is the cave’s heat. Link needs flame protection while travelling through the YunoboCo HQ East Cave. Suitable options include:

A normal heat-resistant meal is not necessarily the same as the fire protection required for Eldin’s burning caves, so check the effect description before entering.

Red rock barriers

Red rock is the principal access obstruction. Yunobo’s rolling attack is the intended solution. Rock-fused weapons can assist with additional barriers inside the cave.

Do not enter the cave with only ordinary blades if you can avoid it. You may be able to find a replacement, but preparing beforehand is quicker.

Bombs inside the trial

The shrine’s bombs are both hazards and tools. Keep a safe distance and use Recall rather than trying to tank the blast. A shield can reduce the danger, but it will not make careless positioning harmless.

---

Goron City

Goron City is the nearest major settlement and the usual preparation point for the shrine. Players can obtain flame-resistant equipment there and begin the storyline that unlocks Yunobo’s ability.

YunoboCo HQ

YunoboCo HQ is the industrial landmark associated with the cave entrance and mine-cart route. The shrine is not inside the main headquarters building. Its access point is specifically the eastern cave area.

Marakuguc Shrine

Marakuguc Shrine is a useful nearby fast-travel point and is associated with the mine-cart route leading towards the cave. From the trolley area near Marakuguc Shrine, players can build or use a vehicle to follow the rail before leaving it to reach the blocked cave section.

Jiotak Shrine

Jiotak Shrine lies north of Isisim Shrine in the wider Eldin area, inside Isle of Rabac Gallery. It is a separate shrine with its own mine-cart route and puzzle. It should not be treated as part of YunoboCo HQ East Cave or as an alternate name for Isisim Shrine.

Misisi Lightroot

Misisi Lightroot is the Depths counterpart beneath Isisim Shrine. It is useful for underground navigation and map illumination, but it is not part of the shrine’s surface trial.

Named locations directory

---

Isisim Shrine is not permanently missable. It remains available after completing the Eldin storyline and can be revisited at any time.

The trial itself does not lock out any known reward through ordinary story progression. Completing or delaying the Goron City quest does not remove the Magic Rod or Light of Blessing.

Is Isisim Shrine in Goron City?

No. It is in YunoboCo HQ East Cave, north of Goron City. Goron City is the nearest major settlement and a useful place to prepare, but it is a separate location.

Do I need to complete the entire Fire Temple first?

No. The normal requirement is access to Yunobo’s ability during the Yunobo of Goron City quest. The entire Eldin storyline does not need to be completed before visiting the shrine.

What is the shrine’s trial called?

The trial is Proving Grounds: In Reverse.

What is in the chest?

The fixed chest reward is a Magic Rod.

How do I get to the upper level?

Use Recall on the large rotating gear. This reverses its motion and allows Link to reach the upper section.

What is the best way to deal with the bombs?

Target thrown Time Bombs with Recall and reverse their movement towards the Construct that launched them. A shield is a useful backup if the timing goes wrong.

Is Misisi Lightroot inside the shrine?

No. Misisi Lightroot is the shrine’s Depths counterpart, located beneath the surface area. It is a separate location.
