Key takeaways
- Gonatoyros Lightroot is directly associated with Soryotanog Shrine, whose name is the Lightroot’s name reversed.
- It stands beside the Abandoned Gerudo Mine, below Gerudo Town in the Gerudo Desert Depths.
- The easiest approach is usually from the mine’s western side, using the raised ramp or nearby higher ground rather than trying to climb the Lightroot’s surrounding cliff face directly.
- Activating the Lightroot reveals map data and unlocks fast travel, making it a useful staging point for the mine and the surrounding Gerudo Depths.
- The Abandoned Gerudo Mine is not part of Gonatoyros Lightroot itself It is a neighbouring location with Master Kohga, Yiga Clan encounters, a Huge Crystallized Charge, a Hovercraft Schema Stone and a Forge Construct.
- There are no verified residents, businesses, missions or collectible subareas belonging to the Lightroot alone. Those features belong to the adjacent mine or the wider Gerudo Desert Depths.

Overview
Gonatoyros Lightroot is a small but strategically important location in the south-western Depths, beneath Gerudo Town and beside the Abandoned Gerudo Mine. Activating it illuminates part of the Gerudo Desert Depths, reveals the surrounding Depths map and creates a permanent fast-travel point. It also provides a safe source of Lightroot illumination that restores Link’s maximum-heart capacity after it has been reduced by Gloom.
The Lightroot itself is not a mine, dungeon or settlement. Its nearby mine is a separate named location with its own enemies, Constructs, quest content, rewards and shop. This guide treats Gonatoyros Lightroot as the primary subject and discusses the Abandoned Gerudo Mine only where it affects access, navigation or nearby exploration.
Location and boundaries
Gonatoyros Lightroot lies in the Gerudo Desert Depths, one of the named regions of the Depths. It is positioned immediately beside the Abandoned Gerudo Mine, which lies beneath Gerudo Town. The wider Gerudo Desert Depths also contains other distinct locations, including Abandoned Kara Kara Mine, Desert Coliseum, Gerudo Dark Skeleton, Gerudo Underground Cemetery, Gonatoyrim Lightroot, Kasari Lightroot, Mihcihc Lightroot, Rasinaduk Lightroot and Tatayam Lightroot. These are neighbouring or regional locations, not subareas of Gonatoyros Lightroot.
Not included within the Lightroot’s boundary
The following should be treated as separate locations:
The Lightroot and mine are close enough to be mistaken for one large location, but location directories list them separately.
Geography and visual layout
Gonatoyros Lightroot is located on elevated ground near the mine. The Lightroot’s base is surrounded by the dark, uneven terrain typical of the Depths, while the travel gate sits at the top of the glowing root. The nearby mine occupies a broader ruined-industrial area, so the Lightroot can be easier to spot when approaching from the mine than when travelling through unlit terrain.
The most useful geographical feature is the raised ramp to the west of the mine. Rather than treating the Lightroot as a target at the bottom of a sheer cliff, look for the sloping route that leads upwards towards it. This is the intended practical approach described by location guides.
No separate named cave, chamber, ravine, building, road or settlement has been verified as part of Gonatoyros Lightroot itself.
How to reach Gonatoyros Lightroot
Route from the Depths
The route is easier if you first activate any nearby Lightroot and approach the mine from illuminated terrain. Vehicles can help across the broad open ground, but the final rise may be more convenient on foot because the Lightroot’s immediate surroundings are uneven.
Route from the surface
Because Gonatoyros Lightroot corresponds to Soryotanog Shrine, the shrine is the useful surface reference. Lightroots generally correspond to Surface Shrines, and their names are reversed versions of one another. Gonatoyros therefore corresponds to Soryotanog.
However, the shrine is not a visible entrance to the Depths. Link still needs to enter through a chasm and travel underground. The surface correspondence is most useful for map comparison and for identifying the Lightroot’s general horizontal position.
Route from the Abandoned Gerudo Mine
If the mine is already on your map, this is normally the shortest local route:
The mine itself has a location coordinate around -3805, -2876, -0524, while Gonatoyros Lightroot is slightly to the west and higher.
Route from the Depths: A reliable approach is
- 01Enter the Gerudo Desert Depths through a suitable chasm, such as one leading into the southern Gerudo underground.
- 02Travel towards the Abandoned Gerudo Mine, using Brightbloom Seeds, a vehicle or an already activated Lightroot to maintain visibility.
- 03When you reach the mine area, do not assume the Lightroot is on the same low level as the main ruins.
- 04Search for the ramp west of the mine.
- 05Follow the ramp and higher ground towards the glowing Lightroot.
- 06Activate the pedestal at the top.
- 07Open the Purah Pad map to confirm that the local Depths map has been revealed and that Gonatoyros Lightroot is now available as a Travel Point.
Route from the Abandoned Gerudo Mine
- 01Fast-travel to the Abandoned Gerudo Mine if it has been registered.
- 02Leave the main mine ruins.
- 03Look towards the raised ground and ramp to the west.
- 04Climb or walk up the ramp rather than attempting a straight ascent against the cliff.
- 05Activate Gonatoyros Lightroot.
Functions of the Lightroot
Illuminating the Depths
Activating Gonatoyros Lightroot produces a large permanent light source around the location. This reduces the need to use Brightbloom Seeds in the surrounding area and makes the nearby mine and travel routes easier to navigate.
The light does not illuminate the entire Gerudo Desert Depths. It only covers a local radius, so Brightbloom Seeds, torches or another activated Lightroot may still be needed when travelling beyond the revealed area.
Revealing the map
The Lightroot reveals nearby Depths map data in the same broad way that a Skyview Tower reveals surface map information. Activating it is therefore useful even if the player has already found the nearby mine, because it helps expose surrounding terrain and the positions of nearby regional locations.
Fast travel
Once activated, Gonatoyros Lightroot becomes a permanent Travel Point. This makes it especially useful for:
Recovering Gloom-damaged hearts
Standing beneath an activated Lightroot’s illumination reverses the temporary reduction to Link’s maximum health caused by Gloom, in the same practical way as being in a safe, light-filled area on the Surface. This does not make Link immune to future Gloom damage outside the Lightroot’s radius.
Nearby connection: Abandoned Gerudo Mine
The Abandoned Gerudo Mine is the most important neighbouring location. It is a separate abandoned Zonaite-processing facility in the Gerudo Desert Depths. Abandoned Mines contain surviving Forge and Steward Constructs, and their industrial remains are connected to the wider underground history of Zonaite extraction.
The mine is also associated with the Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan quest. After defeating Master Kohga there, Link receives the Huge Crystallized Charge and the Hovercraft Schema Stone.
These rewards are not rewards for activating Gonatoyros Lightroot. They are rewards for activities within the neighbouring Abandoned Gerudo Mine.

Gonatoyros Lightroot itself
No permanent residents, ordinary NPCs, faction members, shops, bosses or named characters have been verified within the Lightroot’s own boundary.
The Lightroot is a functional landmark rather than a populated location.
Adjacent mine
The nearby Abandoned Gerudo Mine contains the activity most players associate with this Lightroot:
The Forge Construct’s presence should not be inferred merely from the name of the mine. It is independently documented as a service at the Abandoned Gerudo Mine.

Recommended sequence
- 01Prepare before entering the Depths. Carry Brightbloom Seeds, arrows, healing food and at least one method of dealing with Gloom. A vehicle can shorten the journey across open ground, but it is not essential.
Recommended sequence
- 01Find the Abandoned Gerudo Mine first if you are unfamiliar with the area. The mine is the clearest local landmark and is listed separately from Gonatoyros Lightroot.
Recommended sequence
- 01Avoid a direct cliff climb. From the mine, search west for the raised ramp. The Lightroot stands on higher ground, so a low approach can make it appear inaccessible.
Recommended sequence
- 01Activate the Lightroot before beginning the mine’s quest content. This gives you illumination, a revealed map section and a convenient return point if the mine’s combat encounter becomes difficult.
Recommended sequence
- 01Explore the mine after activation. The mine contains the Yiga-related encounter, Forge Construct and quest rewards. Treat this as a separate objective rather than part of the Lightroot activation.
Recommended sequence
- 01Use the Lightroot as your return point. After completing the mine’s activities, Gonatoyros Lightroot provides a safer and more direct travel destination than navigating back through the dark.
Practical exploration checklist
Nearby mine checklist
The mine checklist should not be counted as Lightroot-specific completion. It is included because the two locations are immediately adjacent and are commonly explored in one visit.
Hazards and useful advice
Darkness
The surrounding Depths can make the Lightroot difficult to identify from below. Activate the mine or another nearby Lightroot first when possible, then approach along the illuminated ramp.
Gloom
Gloom can reduce Link’s maximum hearts during the approach and while exploring the mine. Gonatoyros Lightroot provides a local recovery point, but the effect is limited to its illuminated area. Do not rely on it to protect you during the entire journey.
Uneven elevation
The Lightroot is positioned above the nearby mine rather than on the same floor. Players who approach directly from the low ground may waste time attempting an awkward climb. The western ramp is the more practical route.
Yiga activity
The major faction hazard is connected with the nearby Abandoned Gerudo Mine, not the Lightroot itself. If you see Yiga members, a boss arena or mine-related quest activity, you have moved into the neighbouring location.
Lore and naming
The Lightroot’s name is an anagram-like reversal of its Surface counterpart:
This reversal follows the wider naming pattern between Lightroots and Surface Shrines.
Lightroots are described as the roots of enormous trees found throughout the Depths. Their activation illuminates the underground, reveals map information and creates a Travel Point. Their light also counteracts the practical effects of Gloom on Link’s maximum health.
