Deep Akkala is the north-easternmost mainland region of Hyrule’s Akkala province.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Deep Akkala is a large rural region, not just Skull Lake and the old research laboratory.
  • The Akkala Ancient Tech Lab is no longer a Sheikah research base in Tears of the Kingdom. It is occupied by the Yiga Clan and forms part of a major side adventure.
  • East Akkala Stable is the region’s most useful practical base, providing horse services, cooking facilities, travellers and several quests.
  • The Spring of Power and Malanya Spring are the main sacred and progression-oriented landmarks.
  • Skull Lake Chasm leads to Deep Akkala Depths, while the nearby surface landmarks and caves provide routes into the underground.
  • The region is excellent for exploration rewards, including shrines, Korok Seeds, Hudson construction signs, caves, monster camps and rare materials.

About this guide

Scope: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, base game, surface region unless a separate section says otherwise. Status: Research draft. The region’s boundary and principal named locations are well supported, but some minor map labels, enemy placements and collectible totals vary between mapping projects. This guide therefore avoids claiming a fully exhaustive item or encounter list.

Overview

Deep Akkala is the north-easternmost mainland region of Hyrule’s Akkala province. In Tears of the Kingdom, it is a broad surface area rather than simply the land around Skull Lake or the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. Its named countryside includes the Akkala Wilds, Rok Woods, Tumlea Heights, Tempest Gulch, North Akkala Valley and North Akkala Foothill, as well as major landmarks such as Skull Lake, Malanya Spring, the Spring of Power and East Akkala Stable. The region also contains the former Akkala Ancient Tech Lab, which has a very different role in this game.

Deep Akkala borders the Akkala Highlands to the south and west, the Akkala Sea to the east, and Eldin’s northern approaches beyond the western and south-western ridges. The Deep Akkala surface region should be kept separate from Deep Akkala Sky and Deep Akkala Depths. Those are related map regions, but they are not subareas of the surface in the ordinary geographical sense. The neighbouring Akkala Sea also includes important locations such as Rist Peninsula and Lomei Labyrinth Island, which should not be folded into Deep Akkala merely because they are nearby.

Regional boundaries and hierarchy

Deep Akkala occupies the north-western and northern portion of Akkala. The boundary is easiest to understand through landmarks rather than a single visible line.

The following should not be treated as ordinary Deep Akkala surface subareas:

This separation matters when following map guides. A shrine or chasm near a regional border can be physically close to Deep Akkala while being categorised under Akkala Sea, Akkala Highlands or one of the corresponding sky and Depths regions.

Geography and principal subareas

Akkala Wilds

The Akkala Wilds cover much of the northern part of Deep Akkala. They are a mixture of grassland, wooded patches, small ponds, rocky slopes and elevated ruins. The area is open enough for horses and vehicles, but the uneven ground and scattered ridges make a flying machine or climbing route useful.

In Tears of the Kingdom, the western end contains Zonai ruins. A chest in the ruins contains five Steering Sticks. Addison can also be found near the north-eastern edge of Skull Lake with a Hudson construction sign. Supporting his sign earns a Red Rupee, Hasty Mushroom Rice Balls and a Muddle Bud.

The Wilds are also a productive Korok area. Expect flower trails, balloon puzzles, rock placements and a Korok escort puzzle. A Blue-Maned Lynel is one of the region’s most dangerous surface encounters, particularly for players exploring before upgrading their armour.

Named entries

Skull Lake

Skull Lake is the defining landmark of Deep Akkala. Its two large eye-shaped landforms create a recognisable silhouette from the surrounding hills and from the sky. The lake is not merely scenery: it is connected to a shrine, a cave network, a chasm and several enemy encounters.

The Left Eye of Skull Lake is especially important. It contains a route towards the surface shrine area and is also associated with the descent into the Depths. The lake and its surrounding ridges are useful orientation points when travelling between the Akkala Wilds, the Ancient Tech Lab and East Akkala Stable.

The region’s major underground entrance, Skull Lake Chasm, lies in this area. Entering it provides access to Deep Akkala Depths, where the player can activate Lightroots, gather Zonaite and investigate the underground monster settlements.

Named entries

Rok Woods

Rok Woods occupy a wooded area around the northern and north-western approaches to Skull Lake. The trees provide cover from some enemies but can also make navigation awkward, particularly at night or in bad weather.

The woods are worth exploring slowly rather than crossing at full speed. Check raised rocks, tree hollows and small clearings for Korok puzzles, materials and enemy camps. Rok Woods also has a corresponding area in the Depths, Rok Grove, although the two should not be treated as the same physical location.

Named entry

Tumlea Heights and North Akkala Valley

Tumlea Heights and North Akkala Valley form part of the rugged interior between the Akkala Wilds, Skull Lake and the northern foothills. These areas are less settlement-focused than the routes around East Akkala Stable, but they contain useful high ground for scouting.

The heights are practical launch points for gliding, especially when approaching isolated shrines or surveying monster camps. The valleys are better travelled with a horse, although steep slopes and broken terrain can make a vehicle more convenient.

Named entries

Bloodleaf Lake and the eastern approaches

Bloodleaf Lake is a smaller named body of water in the wider Deep Akkala region. It is less important to the main story than Skull Lake, but it contributes to the region’s network of shallow valleys and watercourses.

The eastern side of Deep Akkala becomes increasingly coastal. Routes here lead towards East Akkala Stable, the coast and the separate Akkala Sea classification. Be cautious when using an interactive map, as nearby beaches, islands and offshore labyrinth locations may be listed under Akkala Sea rather than Deep Akkala.

Access and recommended routes

From Akkala Highlands

The most natural land route is north-east from the Akkala Highlands. This approach takes you through the uplands around Ulri Mountain and into the Deep Akkala countryside. It is suitable for players who have already activated Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower, since the tower provides a strong launch point and reveals much of the surrounding map.

From Eldin

The western routes connect Deep Akkala with the northern Eldin approaches. Heat protection may be useful depending on how far south you travel, although the cooler Deep Akkala surface itself does not require Flame Guard merely for ordinary exploration.

This route is useful if you are already searching around Death Mountain, but the cliffs and uneven elevations make gliding more efficient than following every road.

From the sky

The sky islands above the region make it possible to bypass many cliffs. The North Akkala Sky Archipelago is classified separately as Deep Akkala Sky. From the sky, you can descend towards Skull Lake, the Ancient Tech Lab or East Akkala Stable, but remember that sky islands have their own shrines, devices and challenges.

From the Depths

The main named entrance relevant to this region is Skull Lake Chasm. The Depths route is not a shortcut for an unprepared player: gloom, darkness and hostile underground encounters can make the descent more dangerous than travelling on the surface.

Lightroots in Deep Akkala Depths illuminate the underground map and provide fast-travel points. The underground classification includes Akkala House of Bones, Rok Grove, Sikutamak Lightroot and Ui-ihcoj Lightroot, among other entries.

---

From Akkala Highlands: A practical first journey is

  1. 01
Activate or use Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
    Glide towards the northern ridges.
  3. 03
Drop into the Akkala Wilds and mark Skull Lake.
  4. 04
Travel east or south-east to locate East Akkala Stable.
  5. 05
Return north-west to investigate the Ancient Tech Lab and Skull Lake.

Settlements, residents and services

East Akkala Stable

East Akkala Stable is the most important public facility in Deep Akkala. It offers the standard stable functions, including horse registration and boarding, bed services and travelling NPCs. It is also a convenient rest point before exploring Skull Lake, the Ancient Tech Lab or the northern monster camps.

As with other stables, its usefulness increases as you progress through the stable-related activities and collect Pony Points. Exact available rewards depend on the player’s wider stable progress rather than on Deep Akkala alone.

The stable is also a useful base for:

Named facility

Akkala Ancient Tech Lab

The Ancient Tech Lab is one of the most significant continuity changes between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. In the earlier game it was associated with Robbie and ancient Sheikah research. In Tears of the Kingdom, the building is occupied by the Yiga Clan.

This makes the laboratory both a landmark and a story location. It is not a normal shop, and players should not assume that the building provides the same services as it did in the previous game. Its interior and surrounding encounters are tied to Yiga activity, infiltration and a side adventure involving the Yiga Clan.

Major spoiler warning: entering the lab and investigating its occupants can lead into Yiga-related story content. Players who want to discover the situation naturally should approach the building after exploring the outside and checking the surrounding terrain.

Named facility

Malanya Spring

Malanya Spring is the home of Malanya, the Horse God. It is a major horse-related landmark rather than an ordinary healing spring. Players can reach it by following the route north of the stable and entering the wooded area around the spring.

Malanya’s services are connected to horse revival and horse upgrades. The precise options available depend on the horses registered by the player and the materials supplied. The spring is therefore most useful after you have begun collecting strong horses and rare cooking ingredients.

Do not confuse Malanya Spring with a normal fairy fountain. Its role, resident and services are distinct.

Spring of Power

The Spring of Power is one of the great springs associated with the Goddess Statue and the three sacred springs quest chain. It lies in the northern Akkala area and is connected to the The Spring of Power side quest.

The quest requires the player to bring a specific item to the goddess statue at the spring. It is part of a wider set of shrine-related objectives involving the Springs of Courage, Wisdom and Power. The reward is tied to the quest’s shrine progression rather than to a shop or repeatable service.

Shrines and other checkpoints

The principal surface shrines documented within Deep Akkala include:

The exact order in which you encounter them is flexible. They are valuable not only for Light of Blessing rewards but also as fast-travel points that divide the region into manageable exploration sectors.

Jochi-iu Shrine

Jochi-iu Shrine is associated with the East Akkala side of the region. It is a good waypoint when travelling between East Akkala Stable, the coast and the northern interior.

Kamatukis Shrine

Kamatukis Shrine is found in the Deep Akkala interior. Its puzzle focuses on manipulating a large swinging or hammer-like device to strike targets. The shrine rewards careful positioning and timing more than combat preparation.

Nintendo Life’s shrine directory places Kamatukis Shrine in Deep Akkala at approximately 3427, 3345, 0070, although map coordinates should be treated as navigation aids rather than substitutes for the in-game map.

Sky and Depths checkpoints

Do not add the shrines and Lightroots of neighbouring classifications to a surface Deep Akkala shrine list. For example, the Deep Akkala Sky category contains the North Akkala Sky Archipelago, while Deep Akkala Depths includes Sikutamak Lightroot and Ui-ihcoj Lightroot.

Missions and activities

The Spring of Power

This is the region’s most important shrine-related quest. Visit the Spring of Power and investigate the goddess statue. The objective directs you to obtain and offer the required item, opening the way to a shrine reward.

Preparation

Yiga Clan activity at the Ancient Tech Lab

The Ancient Tech Lab’s changed occupants are one of the clearest examples of the post-*Breath of the Wild* world state. The Yiga presence is not decorative. It is tied to infiltration, investigation and a broader chain of Yiga-related encounters.

Players interested in completing all Yiga content should:

Hudson sign at Skull Lake

Addison’s sign near Skull Lake is a compact Ultrahand activity. The nearby Hover Stones make the support structure straightforward:

Korok activities

The Akkala Wilds contain several types of Korok puzzle:

The Wilds guide documents a Korok near a small pond north of Skull Lake who must be carried west towards a friend, as well as balloon puzzles and a rock-placement puzzle in the eastern woods.

---

Yiga Clan activity at the Ancient Tech Lab

  1. 01
Explore the outside of the lab and observe the guards.
  2. 02
Check whether you have begun the relevant Yiga side adventure.
  3. 03
Enter only when prepared for hostile encounters.
  4. 04
Search the interior carefully after the associated objectives advance.
  5. 05
Revisit the area if a quest directs you back, since its significance changes with progression.

Hudson sign at Skull Lake

  1. 01
Examine the sign and identify the unstable support point.
  2. 02
Attach Hover Stones or another rigid construction piece.
  3. 03
Stabilise the sign without blocking Addison’s position.
  4. 04
Speak to Addison after the sign stands.
  5. 05
Collect the Red Rupee, Hasty Mushroom Rice Balls and Muddle Bud reward reported for this location.

Enemies, hazards and combat preparation

Deep Akkala is not a uniformly high-level region, but its open terrain makes powerful enemies easy to encounter without warning.

Common threats

The Akkala Wilds are specifically documented as containing Blue Bokoblins, Black Bokoblins, Fire Keese, Stalmoblins and a Blue-Maned Lynel.

Blue-Maned Lynel

The Lynel in the far eastern Akkala Wilds is an optional high-threat encounter. It carries powerful equipment and can drop valuable monster parts, but players should not treat it as a mandatory regional boss.

Yiga ambushes

Yiga attacks can occur on roads and around isolated points of interest. Their disguises make them easy to underestimate, so keep a weapon equipped while travelling between landmarks. The Ancient Tech Lab is a much more substantial Yiga location, not merely another roadside encounter.

Night exploration

Night adds Stal enemies and reduces visibility in woodland areas. Use a brightbloom seed or a torch when searching caves, but do not rely on fire near explosive materials or flammable constructions.

Items and collectibles

Materials

The Akkala Wilds and surrounding forests are useful for collecting:

This list is documented for the Akkala Wilds, though spawn rates and exact placements can vary with weather, time and the player’s current world state.

Korok Seeds

Korok puzzles are distributed throughout the Wilds, woods, valleys and rocky heights. They are not confined to the central Skull Lake area. A systematic sweep should include:

Chests and equipment

The western Zonai ruins in the Akkala Wilds contain a chest with five Steering Sticks. Monster camps can also provide weapons, bows, shields and materials, but their exact contents may vary according to enemy strength and world progression.

The Blue-Maned Lynel is documented as carrying a Mighty Lynel Spear and Savage Lynel Bow, with Shock Arrows available from the encounter.

Hudson construction signs

At least one documented sign stands near the north-eastern edge of Skull Lake. Because sign puzzles are spread across Hyrule and can be easy to overlook, mark the location immediately if you are pursuing full regional completion.

Korok Seeds

  1. 01
    The western Zonai ruins.
  2. 02
The northern and north-eastern shores of Skull Lake.
  3. 03
The wooded areas east of the lake.
  4. 04
The roads around the Hudson sign.
  5. 05
High ridges overlooking Tumlea Heights and North Akkala Valley.
  6. 06
    Rock formations near enemy camps.

Underground and sky counterparts

Deep Akkala Depths

Deep Akkala Depths is the underground region below the north-eastern surface. It should be explored as a separate environment rather than treated as a cave beneath a single landmark.

Named entries associated with this Depths classification include:

The Depths category list records these six principal entries.

Do not assume that every underground location directly beneath a surface Deep Akkala landmark belongs to Deep Akkala Depths. Regional classifications are map categories, not always a perfect statement of vertical alignment.

Deep Akkala Sky

Deep Akkala Sky is the corresponding sky-region classification. Its principal named entry is:

The North Akkala Sky Archipelago is listed separately from the surface Deep Akkala region and should be explored for sky-island treasure, Zonai devices and aerial routes.

Lore and continuity

Deep Akkala illustrates how Tears of the Kingdom reuses the geography of Breath of the Wild while changing its political and practical meaning.

The Akkala Ancient Tech Lab is the clearest example. In Breath of the Wild, it represents Sheikah technology and the research effort against Calamity Ganon. In Tears of the Kingdom, its occupation by the Yiga Clan turns a familiar safe-looking landmark into a hostile story location.

The region also preserves the importance of the Horse God and the ancient springs. Malanya Spring remains a specialised horse-related location, while the Spring of Power belongs to a wider sacred network that links exploration, shrine quests and Hyrule’s religious imagery.

The Akkala Wilds preserve much of their previous identity as an open, lightly settled wilderness, but the addition of Zonai ruins, Hudson signs, caves and the Depths makes the region more layered than its surface map initially suggests.
