Introduction
Wao-os Shrine, whose trial is called “Lever Power”, is a Shrine of Light hidden deep inside West Lake Totori Cave in the Hebra Mountains. It is not visible from the surrounding snowy slopes and is normally discovered through The White Bird’s Guidance, a Shrine Quest begun in Rito Village.
The shrine itself is a physics puzzle built around a hinged slab, a bowl, an iron ball and a heavy iron box. Link must use the slab as a catapult, first sending the ball into a lower target and then extending the catapult to reach a higher target. The final launch sends Link across the chamber to the altar.
This guide treats the following as part of the Wao-os Shrine location:
It does not treat the entire Hebra Mountains, Rito Village or the Depths as parts of the shrine. The So-oaw Lightroot is the shrine’s Depths counterpart, but it is a separate location and is listed only as a connection.
Location and boundaries
Wao-os Shrine proper
The shrine is at the end of West Lake Totori Cave, a cave in the snowy Hebra region. Its entrance is not at ordinary road level. It is concealed near a distinctive snow formation that resembles a bird resting on the mountainside.
Inside, the shrine consists primarily of one large chamber containing:
The shrine is therefore compact, but its chamber has several vertical levels. The optional chest is easy to miss if you concentrate only on opening the final gate.
West Lake Totori Cave
West Lake Totori Cave is the immediate external area and the actual approach to the shrine. Once inside, follow the cave path downwards. The route is comparatively direct, with no major combat encounter or branching dungeon structure described by the available guides. PowerPyx describes the route as following the cave’s only path until the shrine is reached.
The cave entrance is associated with a patch of snow shaped like a white bird. From the upper part of Rito Village, Link can look towards the surrounding mountain and use this shape as a visual clue. The cave entrance lies near the bird’s head.
Rito Village and Laissa
Rito Village is not part of the shrine interior, but it is the origin point for the intended quest route. Laissa provides the clue that leads Link towards the hidden shrine. Speaking with her begins The White Bird’s Guidance.
The quest’s relationship to Wao-os Shrine is direct: discovering and activating the shrine completes the Shrine Quest.
Separate but related location: So-oaw Lightroot
Wao-os Shrine corresponds to So-oaw Lightroot in the Depths. The Lightroot is not an extension of the shrine and should not be counted as part of the West Lake Totori Cave location. It is a separate Depths landmark connected through the game’s surface-to-Depths shrine and Lightroot correspondence.

Access and recommended route
From Rito Village
A cold-resistance effect is sensible because the approach is in the Hebra region. The researched guides specifically recommend the Snowquill Set or cold-resistance food and elixirs for travelling through the area.
From Rospro Pass Skyview Tower
Rospro Pass Skyview Tower provides a practical launch point for reaching Rito Village. From the tower, glide towards Rito Village, speak with Laissa and then follow the quest’s bird-shaped landmark towards the cave.
Navigation checklist
The shrine itself does not require a weapon or combat preparation. The main challenge is positioning the objects accurately.
From Rito Village
- 01Travel to Rito Village.
- 02Find Laissa and speak with her.
- 03Accept or begin The White Bird’s Guidance.
- 04Go to the elevated part of Rito Village indicated by the quest clue.
- 05Look towards the Hebra mountains for the large white bird shape in the snow.
- 06Glide or climb towards the area around the bird’s head.
- 07Enter West Lake Totori Cave.
- 08Follow the cave down to Wao-os Shrine.
The White Bird’s Guidance
The White Bird’s Guidance is the Shrine Quest associated with Wao-os Shrine. Its purpose is to turn Laissa’s sighting of a white bird into a physical landmark that Link can follow.
Quest steps
The shrine is normally hidden until Link reaches the cave, so simply searching the surface around Rito Village can be misleading. The bird shape is the important clue, not a visible shrine structure on the mountainside.
Quest steps
- 01Speak with Laissa in Rito Village.
- 02Search for the white bird shape in the snow.
- 03Locate the cave near the bird’s head.
- 04Enter West Lake Totori Cave.
- 05Reach and activate Wao-os Shrine.
Shrine walkthrough: Lever Power
The objective is to hit two targets with the iron ball, then use the same mechanism to launch Link to the altar.
1. Reach the main chamber
Enter the shrine and survey the room before moving anything. The hinged slab and bowl form the basic catapult. The iron ball is the projectile, while the iron box acts as the counterweight.
The first target is lower and closer. The second is higher and further away.
2. Optional chest route
The chest is not on the direct route to the altar.
The chest contains a Spicy Elixir, which provides temporary cold resistance. It is a useful reward if you are exploring Hebra without a complete Snowquill Set, though it is not required for solving the shrine.
3. Build the first catapult
The weight of the falling box tips the slab and launches the ball towards the lower target. When the target is hit, a nearby gate opens and reveals the wooden plank needed for the extended version of the device.
4. Extend the catapult
The longer catapult sends the ball towards the upper target. This shot can be awkward because the box must land in the right place and with enough force. The shrine’s green placement shadow is useful when positioning the box. Make sure the entire box is over the slab rather than only its edge.
5. Open the altar route
Hitting the upper target opens the gate leading towards the altar chamber. However, Link still needs to cross the gap.
Do not dismantle the catapult after the second target is activated. It is needed for the final launch.
6. Launch Link to the altar
The successful launch does not require Link to land directly on the altar platform. Use the Paraglider to correct the flight and steer towards the opening. PowerPyx describes the final sequence as launching Link from the bowl and gliding across to the exit.
2. Optional chest route
- 01Move the iron box into position near the slab.
- 02Raise and lower the box with Ultrahand if necessary to create a workable position.
- 03Use the box as a temporary lift, or use Recall on it after moving it vertically.
- 04Ride the box upwards and use Ascend through the platform above.
- 05Open the chest on the raised platform.
3. Build the first catapult
- 01Use Ultrahand to attach the bowl to the nearer end of the hinged slab.
- 02Place the iron ball inside the bowl.
- 03Lift the iron box over the far end of the slab.
- 04Drop the box onto the slab.
4. Extend the catapult
- 01Detach the bowl from the slab.
- 02Attach the wooden plank to the end of the slab, extending it towards the entrance side of the room.
- 03Reattach the bowl to the new end of the longer assembly.
- 04Put the iron ball in the bowl again.
- 05Lift the iron box over the far side and drop it.
6. Launch Link to the altar
- 01Place the iron ball back in the bowl if it has been moved.
- 02Climb into the bowl.
- 03Lift the iron box over the far end of the slab.
- 04Drop the box.
- 05Immediately draw the Paraglider once Link is launched.
- 06Glide towards the altar and enter the opened gate.
- 07Examine the shrine’s green terminal.
Puzzle inventory
| Object | Function | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bowl | Holds and launches the iron ball, or Link | First shot, second shot and final launch |
| Iron ball | Projectile | Must hit both targets |
| Iron box | Counterweight | Dropped onto the opposite side of the slab |
| Hinged slab | Catapult base | Launches the ball and Link |
| Wooden plank | Extends the catapult | Required for the higher target |
| Paraglider | Controls Link after launch | Chest route and final crossing |
| Ultrahand | Moves and fuses objects | Core shrine ability |
| Recall | Can help create a temporary lift | Optional chest route |
| Ascend | Reaches the raised chest platform | Optional chest route |
Alternative solutions and useful adjustments
The intended puzzle solution is the weighted catapult, but the target switches can also be activated with Bomb Flowers, according to the Zelda Dungeon guide. This may help if the ball repeatedly misses or if the box refuses to settle in the desired position.
Rewards and progression
Spicy Elixir
The optional chest contains a Spicy Elixir. It provides temporary cold resistance, making it relevant to the wider Hebra environment. The chest is not required to complete the shrine and can be collected before or after activating the upper target, provided Link can reach the raised platform.
Light of Blessing
The shrine’s principal reward is one Light of Blessing. Four Lights of Blessing can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.
Fast travel
Once activated, Wao-os Shrine becomes a permanent fast-travel point on the map. Completing the shrine also completes the associated White Bird’s Guidance objective.
Hazards and common problems
Cold weather
The approach through the Hebra Mountains can cause cold-weather damage if Link lacks suitable protection. Use cold-resistance armour, food or elixirs. The Spicy Elixir inside the shrine is a reward, not a reliable substitute for preparing for the approach.
The ball misses the lower target
The first shot is usually the easiest, but misses can happen if:
Try moving the box higher and further over the opposite end before dropping it.
The ball misses the upper target
The upper target needs the longer plank arrangement. Check that:
Link fails to reach the exit
After the final launch, open the Paraglider promptly. Link can steer towards the altar gate, so do not wait for the launch to reach its highest point before correcting course.
The chest is overlooked
The chest is on a raised platform to the right of the main chamber. It is separate from the direct altar route and may require using the iron box as a lift, followed by Recall and Ascend.
For a clean first visit
- 01Prepare cold resistance before leaving Rito Village.
- 02Speak with Laissa and start The White Bird’s Guidance.
- 03Use the snow-bird shape to find West Lake Totori Cave.
- 04Enter the cave and follow the path to Wao-os Shrine.
- 05Activate the shrine entrance.
- 06Collect the optional Spicy Elixir before solving the main mechanism.
- 07Hit the lower target.
- 08Retrieve and attach the wooden plank.
- 09Hit the upper target.
- 10Use the catapult to launch Link to the altar.
- 11Collect the Light of Blessing.
- 12Use the shrine as a fast-travel point for later Hebra exploration.
Lore and design notes
Wao-os Shrine is a clear example of Tears of the Kingdom’s physics-based shrine design. Its title, Lever Power, describes the central principle rather than a conventional lever: the player creates leverage by combining a hinged surface, a bowl and a falling counterweight.
The shrine also connects several layers of the game world:
The location therefore rewards observation before puzzle solving. The hardest part for many players is not the catapult itself, but recognising that the white bird shape is a deliberate map clue leading to a concealed cave.
