Introduction

Ukouh Shrine, officially titled The Ability to Create, is a Shrine of Light on the western side of the Great Sky Island. It is the first shrine most players encounter in Tears of the Kingdom and serves as the game’s tutorial for Ultrahand, Link’s construction ability.

The shrine is deliberately compact, with a small number of rooms and no combat encounter. Its puzzles introduce the essential Ultrahand actions: grabbing objects, moving them, rotating them and attaching them together. The player uses these techniques to make bridges, create a ramp and construct a simple rail-riding vehicle from a board and a hook.

Location and boundaries

Ukouh Shrine proper

Ukouh Shrine consists of the enclosed shrine interior beginning at its glowing green entrance terminal and ending at the altar where Link receives the Light of Blessing. Its trial rooms, movable stone slabs, wooden boards, hooks, rail and treasure chest are all part of the shrine’s interior challenge.

The shrine should not be confused with the surrounding outdoor area. The nearby landscape, trees, cliffs, paths and other Great Sky Island structures belong to the wider island, not to Ukouh Shrine itself.

Ukouh Shrine is positioned west of the Temple of Time, in the western portion of the island’s early exploration route. It is generally the first of the Great Sky Island’s tutorial shrines encountered because the opening route leads Link towards it before the game expects him to travel to the other ability shrines.

Wider connected area: Great Sky Island

The Great Sky Island is the opening overworld region of Tears of the Kingdom. It contains several separate shrines, caves, Zonai device locations and the Temple of Time. Those locations are nearby connections rather than subareas of Ukouh Shrine.

They should be treated as separate shrines with their own entrances, puzzles and rewards. Ukouh Shrine’s ability is Ultrahand only. The order in which players visit the shrines can vary, but the opening design strongly encourages Ukouh Shrine as the first stop.

Access and progression

Ukouh Shrine becomes relevant during the opening main quest The Closed Door. Link reaches the Great Sky Island after the opening sequence and begins exploring the island with Rauru. The shrine entrance can then be activated normally.

No equipment, stamina upgrade, cold-weather clothing or combat preparation is required to enter or complete the shrine. The important requirement is simply reaching the shrine during the opening island sequence. The shrine’s interior gives Link Ultrahand before the main construction puzzles begin.

Ultrahand can pick up, move and rotate suitable objects, then attach them to one another. Nintendo’s own guidance describes the ability as a way to grab, rotate and join objects, and specifically identifies Ukouh Shrine as a place where a board and hook are joined to advance.

Recommended approach

  1. 01
Follow the early Great Sky Island route towards the Temple of Time.
  2. 02
From the Temple of Time area, travel west towards the green shrine entrance.
  3. 03
    Activate the shrine terminal.
  4. 04
Speak with Rauru’s spirit and receive Ultrahand.
  5. 05
Use the ability to cross the constructed gaps and reach the altar.

Walkthrough

1. Receive Ultrahand

At the beginning of the shrine, approach the glowing green terminal. Rauru grants Link Ultrahand.

The ability is selected with the ability wheel. When Ultrahand is active, compatible objects become highlighted. Move the object with the controls, rotate it as necessary and press the attachment command when it is positioned against another compatible object.

The shrine is designed to teach this in stages, so do not worry about constructing a perfect machine. A simple bridge or platform is enough.

2. Build the first bridge

The first obstacle is a gap with stone slabs nearby. Pick up a slab with Ultrahand and place it across the gap so that Link can walk over it.

Depending on how the slab is positioned, you may need to rotate it before setting it down. The important principle is that Ultrahand is not limited to lifting objects vertically. It can place them horizontally and turn them into temporary platforms.

Practical tip: If the slab is awkwardly angled, lift it again and rotate it until both ends rest securely on the surrounding floor. Link does not need to jump if the bridge is placed correctly.

3. Join the slabs

The next crossing requires more than one piece. Bring the available slabs together and attach them with Ultrahand. The attachment point must be close enough for the game to recognise the connection.

After joining the pieces, move the combined structure over the next gap. It is usually easier to assemble the bridge on solid ground first, then lift the completed bridge into place.

The early rooms teach an important construction habit:

This is safer than trying to attach pieces while they are already hanging over a gap.

4. Collect the Amber chest

The optional treasure chest is positioned off the main route, near the bridge-building section. It contains Amber. Game8 identifies this as the shrine’s hidden chest and recommends using the joined slabs to form a ramp or access route.

The exact angle is forgiving. If the chest is difficult to reach, adjust the ramp rather than trying to jump from an unstable position.

Treasure directory

The Amber is a fixed shrine treasure, not a random drop. It is not required for completion, but it counts as the shrine’s optional chest reward.

5. Construct the rail vehicle

The final major puzzle introduces the shrine’s board-and-hook mechanism. In this section, look for:

Use Ultrahand to attach the hook to the wooden board. The board acts as a small platform, while the hook catches on the rail.

Nintendo’s official opening guide specifically describes Ukouh Shrine as requiring Link to join a board and hook with Ultrahand.

The vehicle does not need to be perfectly centred. What matters is that the hook is properly seated on the rail and the board is stable enough for Link to stand on.

6. Reach the altar

After the rail ride, climb the steps and approach the altar. Examine it to complete the shrine and receive the Light of Blessing.

The Light of Blessing is a fixed reward. Four Lights of Blessing can later be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel. Ukouh Shrine therefore contributes to Link’s long-term progression even though its main early-game reward is Ultrahand.

3. Join the slabs

  1. 01
    Collect the parts.
  2. 02
    Build on stable ground.
  3. 03
    Rotate the finished object.
  4. 04
    Move it into position.

4. Collect the Amber chest: To collect it

  1. 01
Look for the chest on the lower or offset ledge near the large gap.
  2. 02
Use the stone slabs to create a ramp or raised walkway.
  3. 03
Place one end of the construction on the higher floor.
  4. 04
Angle the other end towards the chest’s ledge.
  5. 05
Walk across and open the chest.

5. Construct the rail vehicle: A reliable construction method is

  1. 01
    Pick up the wooden board.
  2. 02
    Pick up the hook.
  3. 03
Rotate the hook so that its open section can sit over the rail.
  4. 04
Attach the hook to the top or central part of the board.
  5. 05
    Lift the completed board-and-hook assembly.
  6. 06
Place the hook over the rail.
  7. 07
    Jump onto the board.
  8. 08
Allow it to slide to the far end.

Puzzle principles taught by Ukouh Shrine

Ukouh Shrine is simple mechanically, but it establishes several rules that remain important throughout the game.

Objects can be repositioned freely

Ultrahand allows Link to lift an object, move it through the air and lower it somewhere else. This makes it useful for bridges, ramps, platforms and improvised cover.

Rotation matters

A slab placed flat may form a bridge, while the same slab placed at an angle can form a ramp. Rotating objects is often more important than moving them.

Attachments are reversible

If two objects are joined incorrectly, Link can grab the combined object and detach the pieces by shaking the control stick. Nintendo’s guidance also emphasises that attached objects can be separated and rebuilt when necessary.

Construction does not have one mandatory shape

The shrine suggests particular solutions, but Ultrahand puzzles generally accept any construction that fulfils the physical requirement. A bridge can be longer than necessary, a ramp can use a different angle and a rail platform can be attached off-centre if it still travels safely.

Enemies, bosses and hazards

Enemies

Ukouh Shrine contains no combat encounter. There are no Constructs, Keese, soldier enemies or shrine boss.

Environmental hazards

The shrine has no temperature hazard, gloom, poison, fire, electricity or water section. The main dangers are falling into the gaps and accidentally dropping a construction.

If Link falls, the shrine normally resets him at a nearby safe point. The puzzle objects can then be repositioned and used again.

Construction hazards

When a construction behaves unpredictably, detach the parts and rebuild it on level ground.

Nearby connections

Ukouh Shrine’s surrounding connections belong to the Great Sky Island rather than the shrine itself.

Temple of Time

The Temple of Time is east of Ukouh Shrine and is the major landmark used when orienting yourself on the island. It is a separate building and story location, not part of the shrine interior.

In-isa Shrine

In-isa Shrine is another Great Sky Island tutorial shrine. It teaches Fuse and should not be counted as a room or subarea of Ukouh Shrine.

Gutanbac Shrine

Gutanbac Shrine is associated with the island’s colder highland area and teaches Ascend. Its environmental challenges and route are separate from Ukouh Shrine.

Nachoyah Shrine

Nachoyah Shrine is encountered later in the opening progression and teaches Recall. It is not reachable through Ukouh Shrine and is not included in this shrine’s boundaries.

Great Sky Island facilities and caves

The island’s caves, Zonai device dispensers, ponds, mining areas and other outdoor features are neighbouring locations. They are excluded from the shrine directory because they are not inside Ukouh Shrine.

Suggested exploration route

For a first playthrough, the most efficient route is:

For a completion-focused route, collect the Amber before examining the altar. The shrine can be revisited later, but taking the chest on the first visit avoids having to repeat the construction puzzles.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Reach the Great Sky Island and follow Rauru’s early guidance.
  2. 02
Travel to Ukouh Shrine before attempting complex construction elsewhere.
  3. 03
Complete the shrine and learn Ultrahand.
  4. 04
Return outside and use Ultrahand on nearby platforms, carts and other objects.
  5. 05
Continue towards the remaining tutorial shrines.
  6. 06
Visit the Temple of Time when the opening progression directs you there.

Lore and significance

Ukouh Shrine is significant less for its written lore than for its role in the game’s opening design. It introduces the central construction language of Tears of the Kingdom: objects are not merely keys for one puzzle, but reusable building materials that can be repositioned and combined in many ways.

The shrine’s title, The Ability to Create, reflects this purpose. Its challenge moves from a simple bridge to a joined bridge, then to a moving board-and-hook platform. This progression mirrors the player’s growing understanding of Ultrahand without requiring combat or advanced equipment.

Nintendo’s own beginner material presents Ukouh Shrine as the place where players learn to use Ultrahand and specifically points to the board-and-hook construction as its defining lesson.
