About this guide
Game: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Scope: Base game Trial: Rauru’s Blessing Region: Great Hyrule Forest, according to the shrine’s map classification Surface access: Elma Knolls Well Shrine coordinates: approximately −0593, 1551, −0014 Well entrance: approximately −0672, 1349, 0088 Reward: Light of Blessing and one Large Zonai Charge Main difficulty: Reaching the shrine through a dark underground cave, not solving an interior puzzle.
Overview
Tenmaten Shrine is a hidden Shrine of Light beneath Hyrule Field’s north-western side, reached through Elma Knolls Well. Although shrine guides classify it with the Great Hyrule Forest shrines, the entrance is not in Korok Forest or inside the Lost Woods. The practical route begins on the surface near Elma Knolls and continues through an underground cave containing water, enemies and very limited visibility.
Inside, Tenmaten Shrine is a Rauru’s Blessing shrine. There is no conventional puzzle or combat trial within the shrine itself. The challenge is the approach: finding Elma Knolls Well, descending into the cave system and crossing the underground lake to reach the shrine chamber.
Location and boundaries
Tenmaten Shrine occupies three connected but distinct locations:
The surrounding Great Hyrule Forest, Hyrule Castle area, Irch Plain and any nearby roads are neighbouring map areas rather than parts of Tenmaten Shrine. They are useful navigation references, but they should not be treated as shrine subareas.
The shrine is located north of Hyrule Castle and south-west of the Great Hyrule Forest area. Nintendo Life’s shrine directory places it in the Great Hyrule Forest group, while walkthroughs describe the entrance as being near Hyrule Castle and the Irch Plain. This difference reflects map categorisation rather than two separate shrines.
Named places within the route
The last two are route references rather than parts of the shrine. Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower is a useful starting point for travelling to the well, while Serutabomac Shrine can be used as an alternative fast-travel point if already unlocked.
Location and boundaries: steps
- 01The surface approach around Elma Knolls Well.
- 02The underground cave route beneath the well.
- 03The shrine interior itself.

Getting to Elma Knolls Well
The most direct surface route is to travel from Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower towards the north-east. The well is also accessible from the Hyrule Castle side, across the water and below the surrounding hills. If Serutabomac Shrine is already available, gliding north-west from it provides another approach.
Recommended preparation
The cave is not a shrine quest in the formal sense, and no separate crystal must be delivered to the shrine. The difficulty comes from finding the correct underground route.
Elma Knolls Well and the underground route
1. Enter the well
Drop through Elma Knolls Well. After descending into the first underground section, continue down through the additional opening in the cave floor. The route eventually opens into a larger cavern with water.
2. Light the cavern
The underground area is dark. Brightbloom Flowers and Brightbloom Seeds can illuminate the route. If visibility becomes poor, fire a Brightbloom Seed into the ground, a wall or the water ahead. This is generally safer than moving forward blindly.
3. Deal with the Horriblins
Horriblins occupy part of the early cave route. They can attack from the ceiling, so check above Link as well as along the path. They may be defeated with arrows, melee weapons or environmental attacks. The available walkthroughs agree that Horriblins are present, although they do not all give the same number, so the exact enemy count should not be treated as fixed here.
4. Cross the underground water
The route reaches a sizeable underground lake. Tenmaten Shrine can be seen on the far side. Players can either:
Following the right-hand side of the cavern is a practical way to keep the shrine in view while crossing. One guide recommends using two platforms with Ultrahand, while another notes that swimming is sufficient with adequate stamina.
5. Pass the Fire Like
A Fire Like is positioned near the shrine’s approach. Keep your distance and avoid standing in front of its fire attack. If you have a suitable weapon or elemental material, you can defeat it before entering the shrine. The Fire Like is part of the access route, not an enemy inside Tenmaten Shrine.
About this guide
Spoiler warning: The following section gives the complete shrine solution and rewards.
Tenmaten Shrine walkthrough
Tenmaten Shrine is designated Rauru’s Blessing. The interior therefore contains no switch puzzle, construction puzzle or combat trial. Reaching the shrine through Elma Knolls Well is the substantive challenge.
Tenmaten Shrine walkthrough: steps
- 01Activate the shrine’s entrance panel to unlock the shrine as a fast-travel point.
- 02Enter Tenmaten Shrine.
- 03Walk forwards into the central chamber.
- 04Open the single treasure chest.
- 05Collect the Large Zonai Charge.
- 06Continue to the altar and examine it.
- 07Receive one Light of Blessing.
Items and rewards
The shrine chest reward is reported as a Large Zonai Charge by Zelda Wiki and Game8. Some older walkthroughs instead list a Magic Rod, creating a source conflict. Because the more recent shrine-specific listing and the current Game8 guide agree on Large Zonai Charge, that is the reward used here. Players should still check their own game version if an older guide gives a different item.
Items and rewards
| Item or reward | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Large Zonai Charge | Treasure chest inside Tenmaten Shrine | Fixed shrine chest reward |
| Light of Blessing | Shrine altar | Awarded on completion |
| Brightbloom Seeds | Underground route | Useful for illumination; treated as route supplies rather than shrine rewards |
| Wooden boards | Underground water crossing | Environmental construction materials, not a fixed chest reward |
Hazards and practical advice
Darkness
Darkness is the main environmental obstacle. Do not rely solely on the shrine marker, since the cave route can turn and open into large spaces. Brightbloom Seeds fired ahead make it easier to identify the lake shore, enemies and available building materials.
Water
Swimming is possible, but a long crossing can consume stamina quickly. If Link begins the crossing with a nearly empty stamina wheel, he may be forced to return to shore. A raft made with Ultrahand is safer for players who have not upgraded stamina.
Ceiling enemies
Horriblins can remain difficult to see in the dark. Listen for movement overhead and illuminate the ceiling before committing to the route. Ranged attacks are useful because they avoid climbing into awkward positions.
Fire Like
The Fire Like near the end of the route can punish players who rush towards the visible shrine. Approach from an angle, attack between its openings and avoid its fire breath.
For a reliable first attempt
- 01Fast travel to Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower.
- 02Travel north-east towards Elma Knolls Well.
- 03Before entering, equip a bow and place Brightbloom Seeds in an easy-to-reach inventory slot.
- 04Descend through the well and the second opening.
- 05Illuminate the route and defeat or bypass the Horriblins.
- 06Reach the underground lake.
- 07Build a simple raft if stamina is limited.
- 08Cross while staying close to the right wall.
- 09Defeat or bypass the Fire Like.
- 10Activate Tenmaten Shrine.
- 11Open the chest and claim the Light of Blessing.
Nearby connections
Tenmaten Shrine is particularly useful as a fast-travel point for the northern Hyrule Field and southern Great Hyrule Forest approach. Its position also makes it a convenient reference when travelling between the Hyrule Castle region and the forest-side areas, although it is not a settlement, stable or shop.
Connected and nearby named locations
No residents, businesses, factions, missions or permanent settlement facilities are documented as belonging to Tenmaten Shrine itself.

Lore and series information
Tenmaten Shrine is a Shrine of Light associated with Rauru’s Blessing. Its shrine chamber includes the standard blessing presentation and a statue associated with Rauru and Sonia, according to Zelda Wiki’s shrine entry. The location appears in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and is not a returning shrine from Breath of the Wild.
The shrine also corresponds to the Netamnet Lightroot in the Depths. This is a map relationship between a surface shrine and an underground Lightroot, not an additional part of Tenmaten Shrine’s physical interior. The Depths location should therefore be explored separately if the aim is to document the complete surrounding area.
