Taunhiy Shrine

Taunhiy Shrine is a Shrine of Light on Courage Island, a tall, hollow Sky Island above Hyrule.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Taunhiy Shrine is on Courage Island, not on the surface and not on the neighbouring Bravery or Valor Islands.
  • The shrine appears only after Link completes the island’s untimed ring-diving trial.
  • The most direct route is to launch from Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower and glide towards the tall island chain.
  • The shrine trial requires Link to use the island’s updrafts and fire a bow at Constructs while airborne.
  • The shrine chest contains a Strong Construct Bow.
  • The nearby timed Dive Ceremony awards the Glide Shirt for a finish under 35 seconds, then a Large Zonai Charge for beating the island’s 20-second record. The ceremony costs one Zonai Charge per attempt.

Note

This guide covers the Taunhiy Shrine and its immediate Courage Island setting in the base game of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It does not treat the whole Hyrule Ridge Sky region, the neighbouring Bravery Island and Valor Island, or the wider Tabantha Sky Archipelago as part of the shrine itself.

Overview

Taunhiy Shrine is a Shrine of Light on Courage Island, a tall, hollow Sky Island above Hyrule. Its shrine challenge is called Combat Training: Archery, but the shrine is not initially visible. Link must first complete Courage Island’s untimed diving trial by passing through a sequence of green rings. Only then does Taunhiy Shrine appear near the island’s lower pool.

The location has two closely connected but distinct activities:

Inside the shrine, Link learns to attack enemies while airborne. The reward is a Strong Construct Bow, followed by the normal Light of Blessing on completion.

Introduction

  1. 01
The Courage Island practice dive, which reveals Taunhiy Shrine.
  2. 02
The timed Dive Ceremony, which awards the Glide Shirt and later a Large Zonai Charge for beating the island’s record.

Location and boundaries

Taunhiy Shrine occupies only one part of Courage Island. For practical navigation, the relevant setting can be divided into three connected areas:

Upper Courage Island

This is the highest part of the island chain. It contains the activation point for the diving trial. Link uses the terminal or ring pedestal here to begin the untimed descent.

The ring course

The course runs through the open centre of Courage Island. Green rings appear at different heights, leading down through the island’s vertical gap. The course is a traversal route rather than a separate named settlement or dungeon area.

Lower Courage Island

The lowest section contains the pool where the practice run ends, the Steward Construct who manages the Dive Ceremony, and the shrine platform. Taunhiy Shrine appears near this lower area after the practice course has been completed.

The neighbouring Bravery Island and Valor Island are separate Sky Island locations. They use the same broad Dive Ceremony concept and each has its own shrine and Glide Set reward, but they should not be merged into the Taunhiy Shrine entry. Courage Island’s reward is the Glide Shirt; the other two islands award different pieces of the Glide Set.

Shrine and trial

How to reach Courage Island

The simplest approach is to use Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower. Launch from the tower and look towards the tall vertical island structure in the sky. The route is generally described as west or south-west from the tower, depending on the map orientation and the exact launch position.

A full stamina wheel is useful, but the journey is manageable with ordinary gliding if Link reaches an intermediate island or uses a Tulin gust. The island’s shape makes it recognisable: Courage Island is a tall stack of floating rock surrounding a deep central descent.

Practical approach

The Shrine of Light itself is not the first objective. If Link reaches the lower pool before activating the course, he may find the Steward Construct and be directed towards the trial, but the shrine does not become available until the practice descent is completed.

Required equipment

The shrine’s combat tutorial provides the aerial movement needed for the trial, but arriving with a serviceable bow and arrows makes the challenge more comfortable.

---

Practical approach

  1. 01
    Activate Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
Launch and turn towards the tall, hollow Sky Island.
  3. 03
Glide to the upper platforms if possible.
  4. 04
Land near the terminal or circular activation point at the top.
  5. 05
Make sure the Paraglider is available before beginning the descent.

Required equipment

Required equipment
Item or abilityImportance
ParagliderEssential for the ring course and the shrine’s aerial combat
BowEssential inside Taunhiy Shrine
ArrowsNeeded to damage the Constructs
Stamina recoveryHelpful, but not strictly required if the route is controlled
Zonai ChargeRequired for each timed Dive Ceremony attempt

Unlocking Taunhiy Shrine

The shrine is connected to Courage Island’s practice dive rather than being freely visible from the start.

Practice dive walkthrough

The initial run is a practice run without a time limit. It should not be confused with the later timed ceremony. The shrine is revealed when the practice course is completed, while the Glide Shirt requires a separate timed attempt.

Practice dive walkthrough

  1. 01
Reach the upper part of Courage Island. Land near the activation terminal or ring pedestal at the top of the island.

Practice dive walkthrough

  1. 01
Activate the terminal. A large green ring appears at the starting point of the course.

Practice dive walkthrough

  1. 01
Jump and begin gliding. The course leads down through the hollow centre of the island.

Practice dive walkthrough

  1. 01
Pass through every green ring. Keep Link centred on the next ring before diving. It is usually safer to glide briefly to correct the approach, then dive once the ring is lined up.

Practice dive walkthrough

  1. 01
Follow the course towards the lower pool. Missing a ring can disrupt the run, so prioritise passing through each ring rather than taking the fastest possible line.

Practice dive walkthrough

  1. 01
Land at the bottom. After the untimed run is completed, Taunhiy Shrine appears near the lower part of Courage Island.

Taunhiy Shrine walkthrough

Shrine trial: Combat Training: Archery

Taunhiy Shrine is a combat tutorial focused on shooting while Link is in the air. The shrine’s updrafts lift Link above the chamber, allowing him to aim down at the Constructs.

Combat advice

The shrine is designed to teach a technique that is useful beyond the trial:

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Enter the shrine and approach the central Construct. The encounter begins when Link reaches the main chamber.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Use the updrafts to rise. Open the Paraglider over the vents or air currents. Link should gain enough height to draw his bow while airborne.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Aim at the Construct. The trial expects bow attacks from the air. Ordinary ground attacks are not the intended solution and will not complete this training exercise.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Fire at the Construct. Hit it with arrows while gliding or falling. The exact number of hits depends on the Construct and the weapon used, but the important requirement is to attack from the air.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Repeat the aerial attack against the remaining Constructs. Additional enemies appear after the first target is defeated. Use the vents to regain height whenever Link drops too low.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Wait for the exit to open. Once all the Constructs have been defeated, the way forward becomes available.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Collect the chest. The chest contains a Strong Construct Bow.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 01
Examine the shrine sigil. This completes Taunhiy Shrine and awards a Light of Blessing.

Shrine inventory

The Strong Construct Bow is the shrine’s treasure chest reward. It is not the same thing as the Glide Shirt, which comes from the nearby Dive Ceremony.

Courage Island Dive Ceremony

Once the practice course has revealed Taunhiy Shrine, speak to the Steward Construct at the lower part of Courage Island. The Construct offers the timed version of the diving challenge.

For the 35-second reward, controlled gliding is usually enough. Keep Link’s body aligned with the next ring and use short dives to gain speed between checkpoints.

The Glide Shirt improves aerial mobility, so obtaining it first makes the record attempt easier. The Courage Island record is distinct from the times used on Bravery Island and Valor Island.

Recommended technique: The 20-second record is more demanding

  1. 01
    Start the dive immediately.
  2. 02
Hold the dive input between rings where the path is clear.
  3. 03
Open the Paraglider only to correct direction or avoid overshooting.
  4. 04
Aim for the centre of each ring rather than clipping its edge.
  5. 05
Begin the next dive as soon as Link has passed through the current ring.
  6. 06
Avoid wide turns, which consume valuable time.

Named directory: characters and NPCs

No named human, Hylian, village resident, merchant or faction headquarters is located within the immediate Taunhiy Shrine and Courage Island scope. The Steward Construct is a local service NPC rather than a shopkeeper or ordinary settlement resident.

Rewards and progression

Courage Island rewards

The Glide Shirt belongs to the Glide Set. The other set pieces are obtained from the separate ceremonies on Bravery Island and Valor Island, so completing Taunhiy Shrine alone does not complete the armour set.

Missability and progression notes

Nothing in the location is permanently missable in a normal base-game playthrough.

The main progression distinction is that the practice dive is required to reveal the shrine, while the timed ceremony is optional and is needed for the Glide Shirt.

Suggested exploration route

This route avoids treating the shrine and the ceremony as a single activity. They share the same island, but their rewards and completion conditions are separate.

For an efficient visit, use this order

  1. 01
    Activate Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower.
  2. 02
Glide to the upper platforms of Courage Island.
  3. 03
    Activate the top terminal.
  4. 04
    Complete the untimed ring course.
  5. 05
    Land at the lower pool.
  6. 06
    Speak to the Steward Construct.
  7. 07
Attempt the timed ceremony for the Glide Shirt.
  8. 08
Warp to Taunhiy Shrine if you want to retry the record without climbing back to the top.
  9. 09
Enter the shrine and complete Combat Training: Archery.
  10. 10
Collect the Strong Construct Bow and Light of Blessing.
  11. 11
Retry the ceremony for the 20-second Large Zonai Charge if desired.
