Key takeaways

  • Rutafu-um Shrine is not an open-air shrine It is at the lowest level of the Hebra Mountains Northwest Cave, north-west of Selmie’s Spot.
  • Examining the shrine begins The Northwest Hebra Cave Crystal, which requires retrieving a green shrine crystal from an icy underground pool.
  • The shrine itself is a Rauru’s Blessing challenge There is no internal puzzle or combat trial once it opens.
  • The safest solution is to construct a temporary bridge or platform from the nearby Wing devices, then use Ultrahand to pull the crystal from the water.
  • The cave contains ore, plants and hostile Bokoblins, so it is worth bringing cold-resistance equipment, a light source and a few spare resources.
  • The completed shrine awards a Topaz from its treasure chest and one Light of Blessing.

Overview

Rutafu-um Shrine occupies a hidden chamber beneath the Hebra Mountains. Its immediate location should be distinguished from the broader surroundings: the shrine is inside Hebra Mountains Northwest Cave, while Selmie’s Spot, Hebra East Summit, Pikida Stonegrove Skyview Tower and Coldsnap Hollow are neighbouring landmarks rather than parts of the shrine itself.

The entrance to the cave is north-west of Selmie’s Spot, in a snowy depression with a large opening in the ground. A Blupee near Selmie’s Spot can help point towards the area, although following it is optional. Inside, the route descends through an upper chamber before reaching a larger underground room with a cold pool. Rutafu-um Shrine is found in this lower chamber, rather than at the cave entrance.

The shrine’s green crystal is not an ordinary loose item. Link must first interact with Rutafu-um Shrine to activate the associated shrine quest. A beam of light then indicates the crystal’s position in the centre of the pool. Returning the crystal causes the shrine to open.

Location and boundaries

Rutafu-um Shrine

The shrine is the stone structure at the lowest level of Hebra Mountains Northwest Cave. Its location is commonly given at approximately -2998, 3102, 0514, though guides publish slightly different values. This is normal for a shrine concealed within a cave, because some references record the entrance or the shrine platform at a different height.

Hebra Mountains Northwest Cave

The cave is the shrine’s principal subarea. It includes:

These cave features belong to the route to the shrine, but they are not separate shrines or independent settlements. The nearby surface locations are useful navigation references, not subareas of Rutafu-um Shrine.

Nearby connections

Nearby connections
NameDetails
Selmie’s SpotThe most useful surface landmark and a convenient starting point.
Hebra East SummitA nearby mountain landmark to the south-east.
Pikida Stonegrove Skyview TowerA practical fast-travel and aerial approach point.
Coldsnap HollowA nearby Hebra landmark to the south.
Mu-ufatur LightrootA separate Depths location associated with the shrine’s position. It does not provide a direct replacement for the cave route.

Access and preparation

Rutafu-um is easiest to approach from Selmie’s Spot. From the spot, travel north-west across the snow until you find the large cave opening. Alternatively, launch from Pikida Stonegrove Skyview Tower and glide towards the approximate shrine area, then search for the cave entrance at ground level.

The Hebra Mountains are extremely cold. Equip cold-resistance armour such as the Snowquill set, use suitable food or elixirs, or combine these options if necessary. Cold resistance is especially important in the lower chamber, where the pool can rapidly damage Link. One guide specifically warns against simply entering the water because of its freezing temperature.

Cave route

  1. 01
Find the cave entrance. From Selmie’s Spot, head north-west and look for the large hole in the snowy ground.

Cave route

  1. 01
Descend into the cave. Follow the passage down. Light the route as needed and collect Brightbloom Seeds, ore and other resources on the way.

Cave route

  1. 01
Deal with the Bubbulfrog. The first chamber contains a Bubbulfrog. Defeating it provides a Bubbul Gem, which can later be exchanged through the game’s broader Bubbul Gem system.

Cave route

  1. 01
Continue to the lower cavern. The route eventually opens into a larger room containing the pool and a Bokoblin camp. The cave also contains mining deposits and useful plants.

Cave route

  1. 01
Defeat or bypass the Bokoblins. Clearing the camp makes the crystal retrieval safer. Published guides describe several Bokoblins in this area, with one specifically noting a Silver Bokoblin. Enemy composition may be affected by your progress and world state, so do not rely on a particular group being identical in every playthrough.

Cave route

  1. 01
Activate Rutafu-um Shrine. Examine the shrine structure. This starts The Northwest Hebra Cave Crystal and creates a visible beam leading to the crystal in the pool.

The Northwest Hebra Cave Crystal

The crystal rests beneath or at the centre of the icy pool. Walking or swimming directly to it is unsafe and unnecessary. The intended practical solution is to build a bridge or floating platform from the Wing devices found near the pool, then use Ultrahand to collect the crystal from a safe position.

Alternative approaches

The Wings are the clearest documented solution, but Tears of the Kingdom permits creative Ultrahand construction. A player may be able to use other nearby materials, an ice platform or a longer improvised bridge. These alternatives are not necessary, and the cold water remains the main danger. The important requirements are to reach the crystal safely and bring it back to the shrine.

Reliable solution

  1. 01
Locate the Wing devices. Look around the edge of the pool for the Zonai Wing parts.

Reliable solution

  1. 01
Create a reaching platform. Attach or arrange the Wings into a long enough platform or bridge. It does not need to be an aerodynamic vehicle. Its purpose is simply to let Link reach over the water without falling in.

Reliable solution

  1. 01
Position the bridge. Place one end on the bank and extend the other end towards the glowing crystal. It is acceptable if part of the construction floats or rests awkwardly, provided Link can stand close enough to use Ultrahand.

Reliable solution

  1. 01
Use Ultrahand on the crystal. Target the green crystal from the end of the platform. Pull it towards the shore rather than carrying Link into the freezing water.

Reliable solution

  1. 01
Bring it to the shrine. Once the crystal is on solid ground, carry it back to Rutafu-um Shrine. The crystal will attach to the shrine automatically when brought close enough.

Reliable solution

  1. 01
Enter the opened shrine. The shrine changes from its quest state to an accessible shrine, allowing fast travel and completion of the blessing trial.

Shrine interior: Rauru’s Blessing

Rutafu-um is a Rauru’s Blessing shrine. After the crystal quest is complete, the interior contains no puzzle room, moving mechanism or combat encounter. Walk forward to the treasure chest, collect the Topaz, then examine the altar to receive the Light of Blessing.

Rewards

The Topaz is a fixed shrine chest reward, while cave materials, enemy drops and mining rewards are separate overworld resources rather than shrine rewards.

Characters and ordinary inhabitants

No named resident, shopkeeper or permanent settlement NPC is established as part of Rutafu-um Shrine itself. Selmie’s Spot and nearby Hebra routes may involve other characters or activities, but those belong to the surrounding region and should not be treated as shrine residents.

Enemies and creatures

The Bubbulfrog and Bokoblins are cave encounters, not enemies inside the Rauru’s Blessing shrine interior.

Quest

Resources and collectibles

The cave’s harvestable resources and enemy drops should be treated as ordinary overworld content. They are not unique Rutafu-um rewards and may be collected independently of the shrine quest. The Topaz and Light of Blessing are the fixed completion rewards.

Hazards and useful tips

Hazards and useful tips
NameDetails
Freezing waterThe underground pool can damage Link quickly. Avoid jumping in unless you have a specific reason and sufficient protection.
Poor visibilityThe cave is dark. Use Brightbloom Seeds or another light source before descending too far.
Cold exposureThe surrounding Hebra region and the cave require cold-resistance preparation.
Uneven constructionA bridge made from Wings may shift or fall. Make it longer than strictly necessary and keep Link near the bank until the crystal is within Ultrahand range.
Enemy campClearing the Bokoblins first prevents interruptions while positioning the bridge.
Shrine activationIf the green crystal is not visible, examine the shrine itself. The beam and quest activation identify the objective.
