Key takeaways
- The main named shrine is En-oma Shrine, located inside the Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave rather than on the lake shore.
- The Lake Hylia Crystal is obtained through a vertical route involving a small Sky Island, a chasm-like drop and the underwater cave.
- Hylia Island is a distinct subarea, not merely a generic island in the lake It is the central island group associated with the lake’s earlier appearance in Breath of the Wild.
- The Lake Hylia Chasm leads to the Depths, where the corresponding Lightroot is Amo-ne Lightroot.
- The Whirlpool Cave is effectively a one-way destination without suitable equipment or fast travel. Ascend returns to the water above, while leaving through the waterfall requires the Zora Armour’s Waterfall Swim ability and the Paraglider.
- The area has no verified permanent commercial facilities or settlement services Prepare before arriving, especially if you intend to explore the cave and Depths in one trip.

Introduction
Lake Hylia is a broad Surface region in southern-central Hyrule, lying south-east of Hyrule Castle and north of the Great Plateau. In Tears of the Kingdom, it is not simply the lake itself. The location’s recognised subareas include the open lake, Hylia Island, the Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave, Lake Hylia Chasm and the associated Lake Hylia Depths area. Treating only the water and its central island as “Lake Hylia” leaves out the region’s main shrine activity and its underground counterpart.
The area is quieter than many of Hyrule’s major settlements. There is no town, stable, shop or permanent faction headquarters on the lake. Its importance comes from traversal, environmental puzzles, Korok hunting, the Lake Hylia Crystal Shrine Quest and the vertical connection between the Surface, Sky and Depths.

Neighbouring places and exclusions
The following places are useful when planning a route but should not be merged into Lake Hylia:
They form nearby routes or water systems, but their own map labels, caves, shrines and settlements should be researched separately.
---
Lake Hylia is a wide freshwater basin with several exposed islands and rocky margins. Its open water makes ordinary foot travel inefficient. The most practical approaches use the Paraglider, a raft or a Zonai-powered craft. Swimming is possible, but the lake is large enough that stamina management matters, particularly when reaching the central islands or the Whirlpool.
Hylia Island is the most visually prominent island formation. It consists of a larger central landform surrounded by smaller protruding points. In Breath of the Wild, the central island housed Ya Naga Shrine and a docked raft, and the island group was also associated with the Zora Mei side quest. Those details belong to the earlier game and should not be treated as current Tears of the Kingdom content.
The lake’s most important environmental feature in Tears of the Kingdom is the Whirlpool. Entering it does not merely move Link across the Surface. It drops him into the named Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave below.
Neighbouring places and exclusions
Water and traversal considerations
---
From the north
Approach from Hyrule Field and travel south through the open grassland routes. This is the most natural route during early exploration from Lookout Landing, although the lake itself has no local settlement to serve as a staging point.
From the Great Plateau
The Great Plateau provides a high southern-western approach. Gliding down from its edges can reach the lake, but the distance and height vary depending on the launch point. This route is useful for players who have already explored the Plateau and want to reach Hylia Island without following the roads.
From the Sky
The Lake Hylia Crystal route depends on reaching a small Sky Island above the lake. The relevant Sky location is not part of the Surface Lake Hylia area, but it is directly involved in the shrine quest. The crystal is carried from the Sky and dropped into the opening leading towards the cave below. Japanese guide coverage describes travelling from the starting area’s Sky access, gliding towards the marked island and dropping through with the crystal.
By water
A raft or powered craft is the safest general-purpose method. Build a vehicle with:
Do not assume that an ordinary raft can be recovered from the Whirlpool. Once Link enters the cave, the vehicle is not a substitute for the cave’s own exit route.
---
By water: steps
- 01A stable base.
- 02One or more fans for forward movement.
- 03A steering arrangement if available.
- 04A light source if you intend to descend into the Chasm afterwards.
Hylia Island
Hylia Island is the main island group in the lake. It is a natural stopping point for exploration and Korok hunting, but its importance differs from its role in Breath of the Wild. The earlier game’s Ya Naga Shrine, dock and Mei encounter should not be carried over into Tears of the Kingdom.
Within the base game, the island is best treated as a Surface exploration landmark rather than a settlement or service point.
Lake Hylia Whirlpool
The Whirlpool is the entrance to the Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave. Entering it is the intended way to reach the cave’s lower water chamber. The whirlpool is also the visual clue that the lake contains a hidden interior location rather than merely a Surface puzzle.
Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave
The cave lies at the bottom of Lake Hylia. Link arrives in a water-filled chamber fed by a waterfall, with En-oma Shrine and the shrine quest route inside.
The cave has an important navigation trap: Ascend can return Link to the water above, but it does not necessarily provide a conventional exit. The cave’s documented exit problem is solved either by warping or by using the Zora Armour’s ability to swim up waterfalls, combined with the Paraglider.
Named entries
Lake Hylia Chasm
The Lake Hylia Chasm is the principal named descent into the area’s underground counterpart. It belongs to the Lake Hylia location group but is also catalogued under the Lake Hylia Depths.
The Chasm is useful both as an independent Depths entrance and as part of the wider vertical relationship between the Surface lake, the Sky crystal route and the underground map.
Lake Hylia Depths
The Lake Hylia Depths are the underground area beneath the lake. As elsewhere in Tears of the Kingdom, the Depths contain gloom, darkness, hostile monsters and valuable mining or exploration opportunities. The available location directory identifies the Lake Hylia Depths as a distinct Depths subregion rather than simply labelling the underground space “the Chasm”.

Shrine summary
En-oma Shrine does not present a conventional interior combat or puzzle trial once activated. Its challenge is reaching and activating it by completing the Lake Hylia Crystal objective. Game8 and Zelda Dungeon both identify the shrine as being connected to the crystal quest, while the shrine location is recorded within the Whirlpool Cave.

Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal
Practical advice
---
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Enter the Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave. The entrance is the large Whirlpool on the lake’s Surface.
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Find and examine En-oma Shrine. Interacting with the shrine begins the Lake Hylia Crystal Shrine Quest. A green beam indicates the direction of the missing crystal.
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Identify the Sky Island route. The crystal is not simply lying in the cave. Follow the quest beam and use the map to locate the small Sky Island associated with the objective.
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Reach the Sky Island. Depending on your available tools, use the Paraglider, a Sky launch point, a vehicle or fast travel to a suitable nearby position.
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Lift or carry the crystal. The objective requires taking the green crystal to the marked opening. Avoid dropping it somewhere that makes the final descent awkward.
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Drop through the opening with the crystal. The Japanese walkthrough describes carrying the crystal to the opening and descending with it towards the cave below.
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Return the crystal to En-oma Shrine. Carry it through the cave and place it at the shrine. En-oma Shrine activates and becomes available for completion.
Walkthrough: The Lake Hylia Crystal: steps
- 01Complete the Rauru’s Blessing shrine. Collect the shrine chest and receive the Light of Blessing.
Korok Seeds
Lake Hylia contains Korok activity across the water, islands and surrounding shores. A regional guide lists multiple Surface Korok locations, including one involving a ring of water lilies and another involving balloons near a small island.
Because the exact Korok count depends on where a guide draws the Lake Hylia boundary, a responsible checklist should use a map filter rather than quote a single unverified total for the entire region.
Korok directory
These descriptions identify verified examples rather than claiming that they are the only Koroks in the wider Lake Hylia map area. The regional guide itself presents additional map entries beyond the two examples summarised here.
Shrine chest
En-oma Shrine contains a chest as part of its Rauru’s Blessing completion. The exact item is not consistently exposed in the sources consulted for this guide, so it is not listed here as a confirmed reward.
Ordinary resources
The lake and its banks provide the usual Surface materials associated with water, grassland and rocky terrain. The exact inventory changes with time, weather and enemy respawns. Fixed named collection points should not be confused with random drops.
---
Lake Hylia is more hazardous because of its scale and terrain than because it contains a major boss arena. The principal dangers are:
No major dungeon boss or overworld boss is specifically established as a permanent Lake Hylia landmark in the sources consulted. Random or respawning monster encounters should therefore be treated separately from named regional bosses.
Safety checklist

Residents and visitors
Lake Hylia has no verified permanent settlement or named resident directory in the Tears of the Kingdom material consulted for this guide. This is a significant difference from nearby locations such as Lookout Landing, the Great Plateau’s populated areas and settlements farther into Faron or Hyrule Field.
The named character Mei belongs to the Breath of the Wild version of Lake Hylia and should not be listed as a current Tears of the Kingdom resident.
Factions
No faction headquarters, guard post, stable, research station or permanent Yiga facility is verified inside the Lake Hylia location boundary.
Shops and businesses
No functional shop, inn, stable, armour shop, dye shop or other purchasable service is verified within Lake Hylia itself.
Service directory
This directory describes the current location scope, not the wider roads surrounding the lake.
---
Route A: First visit
- 01Approach from the north or south-west.
- 02Reach the lake shore and activate any convenient nearby fast-travel point.
- 03Cross towards Hylia Island using a raft, Zonai craft or the Paraglider.
- 04Search the water-lily and island areas for Korok puzzles.
- 05Locate the Whirlpool.
- 06Enter the Whirlpool Cave and examine En-oma Shrine.
- 07If you have enough equipment, begin the Lake Hylia Crystal immediately.
- 08Otherwise, leave a map marker and return with stamina supplies and a planned Sky route.
Route B: Shrine-focused
- 01Enter the Whirlpool.
- 02Activate En-oma Shrine.
- 03Follow the quest beam to the Sky objective.
- 04Reach the relevant Sky Island.
- 05Carry the crystal through the marked opening.
- 06Return the crystal to En-oma Shrine.
- 07Complete the Rauru’s Blessing trial.
- 08Warp out unless you have the Zora Armour and intend to climb the waterfall exit.
Route C: Full vertical exploration
---
Lake Hylia is one of the recurring geographical features of The Legend of Zelda. Across the series it is commonly associated with water, the Zora and an important underwater or submerged structure. The exact geography and function change between continuities, so details from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, A Link to the Past and The Minish Cap should not be merged with the Tears of the Kingdom version.
In Ocarina of Time, for example, Lake Hylia contains the Water Temple and Fishing Pond, while in Breath of the Wild its central island contains Ya Naga Shrine. Those are separate game continuities or game states, not current Tears of the Kingdom facilities.
The Tears of the Kingdom version is notable for connecting three vertical layers:
That layered structure reflects one of the game’s central design principles: familiar landmarks are not merely revisited, but expanded upwards and downwards.
---
Route C: Full vertical exploration: steps
- 01Explore the Surface and Hylia Island.
- 02Complete En-oma Shrine.
- 03Visit the Lake Hylia Chasm.
- 04Activate Amo-ne Lightroot.
- 05Explore the Lake Hylia Depths.
- 06Mark any unexplored branches before returning to the Surface.
- 07Finish with a second Surface sweep for Koroks and missed material nodes.
Depths
---
Is Hylia Island the whole Lake Hylia area?
No. Hylia Island is one subarea within the broader Lake Hylia location. The Whirlpool Cave, Chasm and Depths are also associated with Lake Hylia.
Where is En-oma Shrine?
It is inside the Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave, beneath the lake. Its coordinates are approximately 0104, -2517, -0087.
Can I leave the Whirlpool Cave normally?
Not reliably. Ascend returns to the water above rather than providing a conventional shore exit. Warping is the easiest method. Alternatively, use the Zora Armour’s ability to swim up waterfalls and the Paraglider.
Is there a shop or stable at Lake Hylia?
No such facility is verified within Lake Hylia itself. Use a nearby settlement or stable before beginning a long lake or Depths expedition.
Does Lake Hylia contain the Water Temple?
No. The Water Temple belongs to Ocarina of Time, not the Tears of the Kingdom version of Lake Hylia.
Does Lake Hylia have the same shrine as Breath of the Wild?
No. Ya Naga Shrine is associated with the Breath of the Wild version. The principal Tears of the Kingdom shrine associated with the lake is En-oma Shrine.
