About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers the shrine’s full puzzle, chest and reward in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It does not cover story events beyond the shrine itself.

Overview

Kiuyoyou Shrine is a surface Shrine of Light in the Rowan Plain, in the northern part of Hyrule Ridge. It stands in the open on a low hill, east of the Tabantha Tundra and south-east of Snowfield Stable. Some guides group the area with the Great Hyrule Forest, while others describe it as northern Hyrule Ridge. For location purposes, the most precise in-game subarea is Rowan Plain. The shrine itself is a standalone puzzle location, not part of Snowfield Stable, Tabantha Tundra or the Great Hyrule Forest.

Location and access

Kiuyoyou Shrine is visible outdoors on a small rise in Rowan Plain. It is not hidden in a cave and does not require a quest, a weather condition or a particular story milestone to activate.

The shrine lies to the east of the Tabantha Tundra and close to the route between the Hebra region and central Hyrule. Snowfield Stable is the most useful nearby named landmark. From the stable, travel south-east across the open ground and look for the shrine on its low hill. From Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower, launch and glide north-east towards the broad plain. The shrine’s exterior is conspicuous once you are in the correct area.

Named location directory

The stable, tundra and skyview tower are nearby connections, not subareas of Kiuyoyou Shrine. They have their own facilities, characters and activities and should not be treated as part of the shrine.

Shrine layout and puzzle logic

The shrine is built around two linked ideas:

The opening room contains a large ice block, flame jets and a switch behind a gate. The second room contains a wind current, another ice block, a spiked slope and the chest. The final solution combines the ice block and a stone slab into a weighted, fire-resistant object.

The puzzle is forgiving, but ice melts quickly. Work with the blocks away from the flames whenever possible, and only expose them to heat for as long as necessary.

Shrine layout and puzzle logic: steps

  1. 01
Ice can be made smaller by exposing it to fire.
  2. 02
A stone slab can shield ice from fire while also adding enough weight to press a switch.

Walkthrough: Fire and Ice

1. Shrink the first ice block

The target is not a precise size. It only needs to fit into the alcove and remain large enough to be useful in the next room. Several walkthroughs warn that melting it excessively can make the later chest section more awkward.

2. Enter the second room

The next room has a strong upward wind current.

The first ice block can be used as a temporary platform for reaching that chest. If you moved it into the room, place it against the ledges and use Ascend from below to rise through it and reach the upper platform.

3. Protect the falling ice

At the far side of the room, ice blocks fall from above in front of another set of flame jets.

You can sometimes grab the ice quickly as it falls, but blocking the flames is safer and gives you a full-sized block to work with.

4. Attach the slab to the ice

The slab must be placed so it shields the ice when the combined object is returned to the first room. Attaching it underneath is ineffective for the final switch and can make the object difficult to position. The slab also supplies the weight needed to press the final switch.

5. Slide the block down the spiked slope

The spikes do not destroy the puzzle object. The ice slides over them, carrying the slab with it. If the slab detaches, reattach it before attempting the final stage.

6. Collect the chest

The chest is on a raised platform beside the spiked slope.

The chest contains a Zonaite Spear. It is the shrine’s only treasure chest, and collecting it is optional for shrine completion.

7. Open the final gate

The ice remains intact because the slab shields it from the flames. Its combined weight presses down the switch and opens the final gate. Walk through the gate to receive the Light of Blessing.

1. Shrink the first ice block

  1. 01
Enter the main room and use Ultrahand to pick up the large ice block.
  2. 02
Move it beneath the flame jets.
  3. 03
Melt it until it is small enough to fit into the recess containing the switch.
  4. 04
Do not leave it beneath the flames too long. If the block disappears completely, reset the shrine or allow another attempt where possible.
  5. 05
Place the reduced ice block on the switch to open the gate.

2. Enter the second room

  1. 01
    Stand over the wind stream.
  2. 02
Open the paraglider and let the current carry Link to the upper platform.
  3. 03
You can either leave the first ice block on the switch temporarily or bring it into the room after the gate opens.
  4. 04
A chest is visible on a raised ledge to the left.

3. Protect the falling ice

  1. 01
Locate the large stone slab near the flames.
  2. 02
    Use Ultrahand to lift it.
  3. 03
Position it so that it blocks the flame jets.
  4. 04
Wait for a large ice block to fall.
  5. 05
Move the ice block away from the heat before it melts.

4. Attach the slab to the ice

  1. 01
Place the protected ice block on a safe surface.
  2. 02
    Pick up the stone slab.
  3. 03
Attach the slab to the top of the ice block with Ultrahand.

5. Slide the block down the spiked slope

  1. 01
Carry the ice-and-slab assembly to the top of the spiked slope.
  2. 02
    Place it on the slope.
  3. 03
Let it slide down into the lower part of the room.
  4. 04
Use the wind current and paraglider to follow it down.

6. Collect the chest

  1. 01
Place the ice block near the lower ledge beneath the chest.
  2. 02
    Stand underneath the platform.
  3. 03
Use Ascend to pass through the ice or the platform.
  4. 04
Climb onto the ledge and open the chest.

7. Open the final gate

  1. 01
Reattach the stone slab to the top of the ice block if it came loose.
  2. 02
Carry the combined object back towards the first room.
  3. 03
Place it beneath the original flame jets.
  4. 04
Adjust the slab so it blocks the flames from reaching the ice.
  5. 05
Set the ice block directly on the large switch.

Rewards and collectibles

The Zonaite Spear is fixed shrine content, not a random drop. The Light of Blessing is awarded once the shrine is completed. No enemy encounter, miniboss or boss appears inside Kiuyoyou Shrine.

Hazards and practical advice

Do not over-melt the first block

The first block has several jobs. It must first fit into the switch alcove, and it may then be useful as a platform for the chest. Melt it in short bursts rather than holding it in the flames continuously.

Keep ice away from fire

Once an ice block has served its purpose, move it away from the flame jets immediately. This is especially important in the second room, where the falling ice can melt before you have time to attach the slab.

Attach the slab on top

For the final mechanism, the slab needs to sit above the ice. This both shields the block from the flame jets and lets the combined object press the switch. A slab attached underneath does not solve the final section reliably.

Use the chest route before finishing

Once the final gate opens, the shrine is complete. To avoid unnecessary backtracking, collect the chest before returning the protected ice block to the first room.
