Key takeaways
- Location Eldin Mountains Depths, in the northern part of the region.
- Surface counterpart Mayak Shrine, located in the East Deplian Badlands.
- Map coordinates Commonly listed as approximately 1269, 3733, -0553. Some guides give a slightly different vertical value, so use the map marker rather than treating the final coordinate as exact.
- Main function Activates a Depths fast-travel point, illuminates the surrounding area and reveals nearby map data.
- Nearby Lightroots Katenim Lightroot lies to the west-south-west; Misisi Lightroot and Katoij Lightroot are farther to the south-east.
- Recommended preparation Bring Brightbloom Seeds, healing food and suitable protection for the region’s heat. A source specifically recommends Flame Guard level 2 for this area, although the exact need depends on the route and equipment used.
Note
Base game guide. This article covers Kayam Lightroot itself and its immediate Depths surroundings, not the wider Eldin Mountains Depths, Death Mountain, the Fire Temple or the surface settlement of Goron City. Those are neighbouring areas with their own boundaries, routes and points of interest.
Overview
Kayam Lightroot is a Lightroot in the northern part of the Eldin Mountains Depths, beneath the East Deplian Badlands on the surface. It is the Depths counterpart of Mayak Shrine, following the game’s recurring pattern in which surface Shrines and Depths Lightroots occupy matching positions. Kayam is primarily a navigation and mapping landmark rather than a settlement, dungeon or quest hub. Activating it illuminates the surrounding underground terrain, reveals the nearby section of the Depths map and creates a permanent fast-travel point.
The location is useful as a northern waypoint for exploring the Eldin underground region. It also provides a relatively safe pause point when travelling through the volcanic Depths, where unlit terrain, Gloom and heat-related hazards can make long journeys awkward.
Geography and boundaries
Kayam Lightroot stands in the northern Eldin underground region, in a broad stretch of the Depths associated with the mountains and badlands above. It should not be treated as a name for the entire Eldin Mountains Depths. The wider region contains several other Lightroots, including Katenim and Uukukis, as well as major areas such as the Eldin Dark Skeleton.
The immediate location is best understood as a single Lightroot site with its surrounding illuminated approach terrain. No verified named settlement, mine, ruin, shop, stable, facility or mission area is identified as part of Kayam Lightroot itself. The nearest named places belong to the wider Eldin underground region and should be listed separately rather than folded into Kayam.

What Kayam Lightroot does
Approach the glowing root and examine it to activate it. Once active, Kayam Lightroot:
It does not function as a shop, quest counter, forge, armour upgrade station or settlement. There is no evidence that Kayam has a unique service beyond the normal Lightroot functions.
What Kayam Lightroot does: steps
- 01Illuminates the surrounding Depths.
- 02Reveals the nearby section of the Depths map.
- 03Becomes a fast-travel destination.
- 04Restores hearts damaged by Gloom when Link is within the Lightroot’s restorative glow, according to the standard Lightroot behaviour described for the game.
Access and routes
Route from the surface
The most direct general method is to enter the Depths through a suitable chasm in the Eldin or Death Mountain area, then travel north through the underground network. The exact approach depends on which chasms and Lightroots have already been activated.
The underground map is not a simple copy of the surface. Mountains and large bodies of surface terrain can correspond to steep underground walls, cliffs or impassable boundaries. Consequently, reaching the point directly below Mayak Shrine does not necessarily mean Link can climb straight up or walk in from the nearest surface landmark.
The Death Mountain route is particularly relevant to Eldin exploration. Guides for the Eldin underground area describe entering through Death Mountain Chasm and using the early Lightroots to reveal the surrounding terrain before travelling onwards.
Route from another Lightroot
If Katenim Lightroot is active, Kayam is to the north-east or east-north-east depending on the exact map view and route taken. If approaching from Misisi Lightroot or Katoij Lightroot, travel generally north-west through the Eldin underground area.
Do not assume that the straight-line route is walkable. Use the map’s revealed contours, avoid dark cliff faces and be prepared to climb, glide or build a vehicle where the terrain allows it.
Using the surface Shrine as a locator
If Mayak Shrine has already been found, switch between the Surface and Depths map layers. The game’s Shrine and Lightroot alignment makes the Shrine a useful locator for Kayam. Lightroots are generally positioned beneath their corresponding Shrines, and this relationship is one of the most reliable ways to identify a missing Lightroot.
This does not mean that the surface Shrine provides a direct entrance. It identifies the approximate underground position, but Link may still need to travel from a distant chasm.
Route from the surface: A practical approach is
- 01Enter the Depths through an Eldin-region chasm.
- 02Activate the first nearby Lightroot you encounter.
- 03Use the revealed map to identify the northern route towards Kayam.
- 04Travel with Brightbloom Seeds ready, especially if the intervening Lightroots have not been activated.
- 05Activate Kayam when its glow becomes visible.
Hazards and preparation
Kayam is in the Eldin underground region, so preparation should focus on the general hazards of the Depths rather than a unique hazard belonging only to this Lightroot.
Darkness
Before activation, the surrounding area is difficult to read. Use:
Throwing a Brightbloom Seed onto a distant wall or ceiling is safer than blindly climbing into unknown terrain.
Gloom
Gloom may be present on the ground or around enemy encounters. It temporarily reduces Link’s maximum hearts. Kayam’s activated glow gives him a useful recovery point, but it does not remove the need to manage Gloom exposure while travelling between Lightroots. Bring gloom-resistant equipment or healing food if the route passes through extensive patches.
Heat and volcanic terrain
The Eldin Depths contain hot and lava-adjacent areas. One location guide recommends Flame Guard level 2 for Kayam Lightroot, so players should avoid arriving without suitable protection if their chosen route crosses the hotter parts of the region.
However, Kayam itself should not be confused with the active volcanic areas around Death Mountain. The Fire Temple, Goron City and Death Mountain’s surface hazards are separate locations and progression areas.
Enemies
No unique boss encounter is verified as belonging to Kayam Lightroot itself. Enemy encounters in the surrounding Depths are part of the normal regional layout and may vary according to the route taken and the player’s progression. Do not treat enemies seen on the approach as a fixed Kayam-specific roster.
Walkthrough
Efficient exploration route
For a broader Eldin underground sweep, a sensible route is:
This route is useful because Lightroots create a chain of fast-travel points and progressively remove the need to cross long stretches of darkness.
Activating Kayam Lightroot
- 01Enter the Depths through an Eldin-region chasm or fast-travel to a nearby activated Lightroot.
- 02Check the Depths map for Kayam’s position beneath Mayak Shrine.
- 03Use Brightbloom Seeds to illuminate the route if nearby Lightroots are inactive.
- 04Avoid unnecessary Gloom patches and prepare Flame Guard protection if travelling through hot terrain.
- 05Approach the glowing Lightroot structure.
- 06Examine the root to activate it.
- 07Wait for the illumination and map-reveal effect to complete.
- 08Open the map and confirm that Kayam Lightroot is now available as a fast-travel point.
Efficient exploration route
- 01Activate an accessible Eldin Lightroot near the initial chasm.
- 02Travel through the revealed Eldin underground corridors.
- 03Activate Katenim Lightroot if approaching from the western side.
- 04Continue towards Kayam Lightroot in the north.
- 05Use Kayam as a return point before exploring south-east towards Katoij and Misisi.
- 06Compare the Depths map with the Surface map to identify Shrines without corresponding activated Lightroots.
Collectibles and services
Verified fixed content
The principal fixed content at this location is:
No separately verified treasure chest, unique weapon, armour piece, named NPC, shop, Forge Construct or mission reward is established at the Lightroot itself in the sources consulted.
What is not part of Kayam Lightroot
The following should not be attributed to Kayam without separate evidence:
This distinction matters because the wider Eldin Mountains Depths contains many activities, but they are not automatically part of Kayam’s location boundary.
Progression and missability
Kayam Lightroot is not known to be missable. It remains available after the main story, and activating it does not depend on completing a particular regional phenomenon.
If the Lightroot is left inactive, the surrounding map remains dark, but this does not block the main story. Likewise, activating Kayam does not appear to unlock a unique quest or alter the regional storyline.
Lore and naming
Kayam Lightroot and Mayak Shrine form one of the game’s surface-underground name pairs. The relationship between Shrine and Lightroot names is commonly presented as a reversed-name pattern, making a discovered Shrine a useful clue for finding its corresponding Lightroot.
The Lightroots also reinforce the game’s visual and mechanical contrast between Hyrule’s surface and the Depths. On the surface, Mayak Shrine is a compact challenge location. Below it, Kayam is an environmental beacon whose importance lies in revealing and stabilising underground travel.
