Key takeaways
- Kadaunar Shrine is a sky shrine, not a surface shrine in the Eldin region.
- It is located in the South Eldin Sky Archipelago, at approximately 1882, 1202, 1251. Some map references give a nearby elevation of 1265 because of differing map or entrance readings.
- The fastest conventional approach begins at Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower, followed by gliding, mine-cart travel and Ascend.
- The trial’s central mechanic is using hydrant water to cool lava into movable platforms.
- The shrine contains one optional chest with a Strong Construct Bow.
- A pre-fused rocket shield can bypass much of the lava crossing, but the Rocket must be attached before entering because Zonai Capsules cannot be opened inside the shrine.
About this guide
Base game scope: The shrine interior and its immediate entrance area in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The wider South Eldin Sky Archipelago is treated as the shrine’s surrounding region, not as part of Kadaunar Shrine itself.
Overview
Kadaunar Shrine is a Shrine of Light in the South Eldin Sky Archipelago, within the Eldin Canyon sky area. Its trial is called “Water Makes a Way”, a concise puzzle centred on turning lava into temporary solid platforms with water from Zonai hydrants. The shrine tests the player’s ability to use Ultrahand, fuse cooled-lava slabs into bridges, and manipulate moving platforms with Recall.
The shrine is especially useful for players exploring Eldin early because it provides a practical demonstration of how water interacts with lava. It is not a combat shrine and has no boss encounter. Its main reward is a Light of Blessing, with one optional treasure chest containing a Strong Construct Bow.
Location and boundaries
Kadaunar Shrine stands on a floating island in the South Eldin Sky Archipelago, rather than on Death Mountain or the Eldin surface. The shrine itself consists of the entrance platform and the enclosed “Water Makes a Way” trial. Nearby sky islands, mine-cart routes and other Zonai structures belong to the surrounding archipelago and should not be counted as internal shrine subareas.
The shrine is associated with the Eldin Canyon sky map area. The available map references place it at approximately 1882, 1202, 1251, while another reference lists 1882, 1203, 1265, reflecting a small difference in the point used for measurement rather than a separate location.
Named location directory
The wider archipelago may contain additional islands, devices and routes, but they are not part of the shrine’s interior.

Reaching Kadaunar Shrine
The standard route uses Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower. From the tower, glide towards the South Eldin Sky Archipelago and look for the chain of floating islands and mine-cart infrastructure. Mine carts help cross gaps between islands, while Ascend can take Link through suitable platforms or overhanging structures.
The shrine does not require the player to have completed the Eldin regional storyline. The main practical requirement is having enough stamina, altitude or Zonai support to reach the sky island. The conventional route is designed around the Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower, but other sky-travel methods may also work.
A practical route is
- 01Launch from Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower.
- 02Glide towards the southern Eldin sky islands.
- 03Land on the first reachable island rather than trying to fly directly to the shrine.
- 04Follow the mine-cart route across the archipelago.
- 05Use Ascend where the route passes beneath a higher island.
- 06Continue until the island containing Kadaunar Shrine comes into view.
- 07Activate the shrine before entering so it becomes a fast-travel point.
Shrine interior and puzzle layout
Kadaunar Shrine is a compact, linear trial divided into two main lava-crossing sections:
The shrine contains no named residents, ordinary NPCs, factions, shops, buildings or law-enforcement elements. Its only constructed landmark is the shrine’s terminal area, where Link receives the Light of Blessing.
Interior directory
A Rauru and Sonia statue is present at the end of the shrine beside the completion terminal.
Shrine interior and puzzle layout: steps
- 01An opening chamber where water creates cooled-lava platforms.
- 02A second chamber with flowing lava, hydrants and a final moving-platform crossing.
Walkthrough
1. Create the first bridge
At the entrance, water pours into an enclosed area of lava. Where the water touches the lava, it creates solid, cooled-lava slabs that can be picked up with Ultrahand.
The slabs can be attached end to end. They do not need to form a perfectly straight bridge, but a relatively flat arrangement makes the crossing easier. Thonky recommends constructing a bridge of at least four platforms before placing it across the lava.
2. Collect the optional chest
After crossing the first lava pool, do not immediately continue towards the cracked wall. Take the bridge with Ultrahand and lean it against the raised ledge on the left.
Climb the cooled-lava ramp to reach the chest. It contains a Strong Construct Bow. The bow is a fixed shrine reward rather than a random drop, although the game’s general weapon condition and scaling systems may affect how useful it is relative to the player’s current equipment. The chest is optional and does not block shrine completion.
3. Break the cracked wall
Return to the main route and inspect the cracked stone wall. Use a heavy weapon to destroy it.
A Rusty Claymore placed near the wall can be fused to a cooled-lava platform and used as a makeshift rock-breaking weapon. Alternatively, any suitable blunt or rock-fused weapon can perform the same function. The important requirement is the weapon’s ability to break the cracked stone barrier, not a particular named weapon.
4. Activate a hydrant in the flowing-lava chamber
Beyond the wall is a second lava section with a current. Two hydrants are available in this area. Strike one to activate it, then use Ultrahand to position it so that it sprays water onto the lava.
The hydrants continue running once activated. This means the player does not need to repeatedly strike them while moving across the chamber. However, the flowing lava can carry the newly created platforms away, so the next section rewards quick positioning and careful timing.
5. Use the moving platform and Recall
Create a cooled-lava platform near the far end of the chamber. Then move the hydrant aside so it does not interfere with your route.
This is the shrine’s most important use of Recall. The player does not need to build a large bridge in the second room if the moving platform can be reversed at the right time. Thonky’s walkthrough specifically describes creating a platform near the exit and using Recall to send a drifting platform back towards it.
6. Claim the Light of Blessing
At the end of the shrine, examine the green shrine terminal beside the Rauru and Sonia statue. This completes the trial and awards a Light of Blessing.
1. Create the first bridge: Use Ultrahand to
- 01Pick up one of the cooled-lava platforms.
- 02Move it out of the enclosure.
- 03Wait for the hydrant to create more platforms.
- 04Attach additional platforms to the first one.
- 05Continue until you have a bridge of roughly four slabs.
- 06Place the bridge across the lava.
5. Use the moving platform and Recall: When another cooled-lava platform drifts close enough
- 01Jump onto it.
- 02Use Recall on the platform.
- 03Reverse its movement so it travels back towards the far end.
- 04Ride it until it approaches the shrine exit.
- 05Jump onto the final ledge.
Alternative solutions and useful techniques
Rocket-shield bypass
Players who have prepared a shield fused with a Rocket can use it to rocket-jump and glide over some or all of the lava. This is an alternative rather than the intended puzzle solution.
The Rocket must be fused before entering the shrine because Zonai Capsules cannot be opened inside. This distinction matters: a Rocket shield brought into the shrine works, but a player cannot enter the shrine, open a capsule and build the same tool from scratch.
Using Ultrahand conservatively
Do not overbuild the first bridge. Four connected platforms are generally sufficient, and a shorter bridge is easier to move into position. If the bridge is too long or uneven, it may catch on the shrine’s walls or be difficult to place flatly.
Recovering a drifting platform
If a platform moves past the ideal position, Recall is usually safer than trying to chase it by swimming or jumping. Lava is hazardous, and a failed jump can return Link to the previous safe ledge or cost health.

Functional shrine objects
The cooled-lava platforms are created during the trial rather than collected as permanent inventory items. The hydrants are puzzle devices, not ordinary consumable equipment.

Enemies, hazards and secrets
Enemies
Kadaunar Shrine has no mandatory enemies or boss encounter. Its challenge is entirely environmental and mechanical.
Secrets and optional content
The main optional discovery is the chest on the left ledge after the first lava crossing. It is easy to miss if the player follows the obvious route directly to the cracked wall.
There is no evidence in the researched sources of a hidden Korok, quest trigger, alternate boss, or missable progression event inside the shrine. The chest remains accessible during the normal puzzle route before the final chamber is completed.
Progression and missability
Kadaunar Shrine is not tied to a temporary story state in the available evidence. The shrine can be completed as an independent Shrine of Light once reached.
The Strong Construct Bow chest is optional, but it is best collected before completing the shrine because the route is straightforward at that point. No source reviewed identifies a permanent lockout or a story event that removes access to the chest.
The shrine’s completion contributes one Light of Blessing towards the player’s general blessing total. No unique quest reward, sage ability or regional-phenomenon progression is attached to it in the researched material.
